2023 Free Agency

Littleton seems like a depth signing/competition. Hate that he hasn’t been able to put together another massive season since leaving Wade Phillips but i’d imagine Wade gave DeMeco a thumbs up. Low risk acquisition and if he recaptures that all pro form then we found ourselves a steal! But I would still make finding a MLB a high priority in the draft.

I haven’t watched him so this is based off of comments by other teams fans and PFF grades. He was a pretty good starter for a couple years with the Rams earning a 67 and 79 rating in 2018 and 2019 from PFF. He got moved over to the Raiders who apparently played him a bit out of scheme (idk if this is true just what some Raiders fans said on Reddit). He did not play well with Oakland earning a 46 and 47 grade from PFF, maybe for the aforementioned scheme fit issues. He then started about half the games in Carolina last year and played fairly well with a 72 PFF grade.

Looks like a guy who probably won’t be all that good but could be a decent stopgap if DeMeco can work with him.
I've been watching some games; just weekly recaps from NFL.com and the highlights.
I also combed through the Advance Stats on ProFootball Reference and this is a few of the things I noticed:

1. The Rams played in a 3-4 base defense, but just like most teams, they would often bring an OLB up to the LOS on passing down.
2. The Rams played more cover one and cover three than cover two.
3. Littleton played mostly WILB (he's seldom on the TE unless when they played zone or the other teams lined up with 2 TEs.
4. The Rams used Littleton near the LOS quite a fair bit.
He would key on the RB or come in on a blitz.
His role is very different than with the Raiders.
(I haven't gotten to the Panthers yet).

5. The Raiders played a 4-5-2 scheme with a lot of zones; though the LB did carry the receivers (TE/slot receiver or RB out of the backfield) in man from time to time.

6. Cover 2 was very common with the Raiders.

6. In general, the Rams defense seems to be more aggressive, with more disguises and blitzes.
The Raiders defense seems to be more passive.
(Sounds familiar).

7. Also, since the Rams defensive line is stronger, it helps Littleton to play more agressive at the LOS or in the middle of the field.
He played downhill with the Rams much more than with the Raiders.

After more thought on the Littleton signing, you can’t help but think he’ll be a good value signing for this team. Exciting to see the first LB DeMeco has added to the team. Gives us an idea of what other candidates he may be looking to add.

So far other LBs the team has been linked to were:

Vander Esch
Al-Shaair
Perryman

Sounds like a slightly upgraded Kirksey. Not a terrible signing. I'm guessing the medicals didn't pan out with Denzel so this was a backup plan. I know Denzel was here for two days late last week. Denzel is a legit starter if healthy but the concern was the health. If the medicals were iffy, I'm glad they passed. Nick needs to do that more often and be more discerning with injury risks, especially in high impact positions like MLB.
I wonder, if Ryans was HC last draft if he would have okayed Stingley? Too late but would give me a better feel of Demeco going into this draft.

Is it the perception of the board that these were good contracts for said players based on what we know?

I don't like all the one year contracts, but I think some of those were Nick, but quite a few were the players wanting 1 year contracts hoping to "prove it" and get better contracts next year. I don't think Nick over paid. Plus why would they come here if other teams were offering longer contracts with better salary?

Rankins will prove to be the biggest addition to the team imo. Brings pass rush up the gut. Jalen Carter or Will Anderson tandem with Rankins would be fun to watch.

I have 5 which will have immediate impact/starters and another 2 or 3 depending on the draft.

Mason, Schultz, Rankins, Singletary & Ward.

Deiter, Littleton, Wood.

The rest, backups and depth.
Thanks but my comment was aimed more at the contract $. 7- 8 starters better than last year's will be great and do it again next year.

Texans signed C Michael Deiter, formerly of the Dolphins.
Deiter started 15 games for the Dolphins at left guard as a rookie in 2019 before being relegated to a bench role in 2020, moving to center at 2021, and playing in another depth role along the offensive line in 2022. He comes off his rookie contract looking to recapture his early career upside in a new setting, heading to the Texans on an undisclosed deal. Deiter should initially settle into a depth role for the rebuilding franchise on a roster lacking much in the way of experience along the offensive line outside of their presumed starters. The news comes directly on the heels of the signings of running back Devin Singletary and tight end Dalton Schultz earlier in the day. per rotoworld
If Young comes to Houston, the Texans should immediately get an NFL equipment exemption to have a periscope designed into his helmet...........Deiter is 6'6".

Is there a fanbase out there that gets as negative about camp bodies as ours?

Probably... Check other organizations who has recently had as close a relationship to losing as we have... I bet you will find some. Frustrating, I know, but the Texan organization is mostly to blame. Why would fans give this organization the benefit of the doubt, at this point?

This is a group of novices and rookie coaches in new positions. I would not be surprised to see Demeco have a bigger backyard BBQ draft party with coaches getting a spin on the Wheel of Fortune much like Lovie's draft. That said I am encouraged by what I've seen from Bobby Slowick. Not that surprised me though since he does come from a coaching family (Bob Slowik) and has been indoctrinated and baptized under the Mike Shanahan tree.

What encouraging things have you seen so far? I haven't seen very much news about him

The part I think is weird is that you think any benefit of the doubt needs to be extended for a camp body on a 1 year vet minimum contract with the possibility of 40k in dead money

Found Perryman's contract. Haven't been able to find Deiter's contract, although I doubt it doesn't fall between only 1 and 2 million dollars.
