2023 Free Agency

If Shultz balls out, we can always franchise him. A TE franchise isn't that big.
Yep and maybe someone will offer two round ones for him. Just kidding I think we will get a real good season from Schultz. But I thought Rasheem Green was real deal.. so there is that..

Agreed, but what's with all the 1 year deals? I mean honestly...WTF!

Like you said, he quit on his team last year. Why give him anymore than a year if he does that? I don’t have any qualms about the 1 year deals. Let them come here to prove themselves.

And I’m going to repeat myself for effect.. I hate dead money, and I imagine Caserio doesn’t think to highly about it either, considering the dead money hell he came into when he got here. And before you go there, he just locked up the left tackle for the next 3 years, so he’s looking at every player differently.

Chill.

Texans are having a nice off season.

Im almost positive they’ll get some good players in this draft…This is going to be a real football team next season.

They’ll actually have multiple players to give a damn about.

Feels good to actually have genuine excitement about all the steps in the process leading up to opening day.

Texans signed C Michael Deiter, formerly of the Dolphins.
Deiter started 15 games for the Dolphins at left guard as a rookie in 2019 before being relegated to a bench role in 2020, moving to center at 2021, and playing in another depth role along the offensive line in 2022. He comes off his rookie contract looking to recapture his early career upside in a new setting, heading to the Texans on an undisclosed deal. Deiter should initially settle into a depth role for the rebuilding franchise on a roster lacking much in the way of experience along the offensive line outside of their presumed starters. The news comes directly on the heels of the signings of running back Devin Singletary and tight end Dalton Schultz earlier in the day. per rotoworld

IMO, once Caserio and Ryans get the guys they want in the draft and the team is more talented overall, we will start seeing FAs signed to longer term deals. It makes no sense to lock up FAs to long term deals with the roster in the shape it's in right now. Teams typically overpay in FA, paying good players as if they were elite players. That's how teams get in cap hell.

I don’t think we’re going to see many long term free agent signings in the Caserio era based on his comments. Multiple times he has brought up that many if not most long term free agent signings end up with the player cut after a couple of years. I think he genuinely believes in building through the draft and using free agency for depth guys and to plug holes in the short term.

I think longer term deals are going to be reserved for re-signing draft picks and maaaybe if we ever feel like we just need 1-2 more pieces to get us over the hump.

That seems like a sound strategy but if he’s gonna stick to it religiously it means he’s gonna have to draft well

fair point Docbar. Thanks for the perspective and food for thought to you and a bunch of my fellow Texans fans. Great discussion guys and gals. Like someone said above, this team will be legit this year and actually fun to watch. Not expecting playoffs…I think that comes in 2024, but this offense won’t be competing with goofing outside to watch the grass grow, and the D might actually stop a RB once in a while. I see a “middling” team with the arrow ticking up as the season progresses.

great post as well, and you are right. His strategy has merit, but he better draft better then he did last year. An oft injured corner and an iffy guard drafted higher than most guards…gotta nail the 1st rounders this year and most of the time going forward…plus hit on a fair number of later picks. If he does, it’s a winning strategy. If he doesn’t it’s a tragedy not strategy.

Texans Trade for Ravens QB Lamar Jackson?

HOUSTON — Former league MVP Lamar Jackson remains in a fluid situation with the Baltimore Ravens. Jackson had a non-exclusive tag placed on him by the Ravens this off-season, which gave the All-Pro quarterback a chance to negotiate with other teams in hopes of landing a lucrative deal.

The market for Jackson has been surprisingly small. But Dan Orlovsky of ESPN revealed he believes the Houston Texans should go after Jackson this off-season.

How did he quit on his team?

Singletary should have been a first day signing instead of the other dude.

This was my post after the Dallas playoff lost. Schultz was the TE I was referencing

Seriously, the worse execution of a 40 second drive in playoff history.
-Almost caught for a safety
- Starting TE with two poor (lazy and unaware) plays
- weird formation which had a catch by your 4th Wr and no laterals

So we are referencing two plays, in one drive, in one game? In which he scored a TD? And had 100 yards and 2 TD's the playoff game before?

That's called quitting on his team? OK...

Pretty mid at least according to PFF. Seems like another Kirksey level guy but maybe DeMeco can get the most out of him until we get some younger talent there
Littleton is only 29 and a pro bowl talent (2018). 2019, his last as a Ram was also an excellent year. Left the Rams as a free agent in 2020. We'll see if DeMeco can return him to his '18-'19 form.

Wikipedia does not have a description of his 2020 - 2022 seasons. But his stats for 2020 & 2021 (LV) were pretty solid. Don't know about 2022 (CAR).

(edit) His 2018 and 2019 seasons he played ILB in a 34 defense.

That’s a mistake I need to stop making, referencing what some other poster said in order to make a point.

But to be clear, I have no issue with one year deals, for the very reasons listed above.

I wasn't the poster who said Schultz quit, fwiw, and made the assumption of what was being referenced. At minimum, it was a poor time to have a lapse in concentration.

Even if a player is more positive than good, no need to defend poor moments.

Agree that we can assess poor play accurately, while avoiding the hyperbole.

I'm excited to have a legit starting TE on this team for the first time in a long time. If the worst that can be said of him is that he didn't play well in a game-ending drive that was pretty much a FUBAR by the entire team, I'll be happy.

Why does it matter when Singletary was signed? He’s here now, in the same FA cycle. There could be a number of reasons why he waited or the team waited. None of them really matter now that he is signed.

Deiter had foot issues in 2021 and 2022. Any updates on this. Only played in 8 games in '21, but came back and played in 17 games in '22 with no starts.

I didn't personally say Schultz quit on the team. I was referencing a couple of plays in key moments near the end of the Cowboys playoff game where he got really lazy and loafed. It was a poor effort in critical situations. That's why I said I hope Demeco talked to him about those plays and let him know that's not how the Texans play football. He is trying to create a culture here and poor effort doesn't fit. That said, it was a couple of plays. I'm not going to cry in my soup, I just hope it's been discussed and that we don't see it here in Houston.

Littleton rings a bell, but he's not a guy I follow or know enough about to really have input. Does anyone know this guy or follow his game? Is he an MLB or an OLB? Will, Mike, or Sam?

Just know next year they will have around 90+ million to work with. Therefore, if these players pan out, they could extend them.
I hope things work out for him.

I also acknowledge we may very well have a dozen solid players on next year's roster & still not spend to bring in FAs.

& I'll be fine with that if his draft picks start showing they are among the dozen. Build through the draft, supplement through FA.

I haven’t watched him so this is based off of comments by other teams fans and PFF grades. He was a pretty good starter for a couple years with the Rams earning a 67 and 79 rating in 2018 and 2019 from PFF. He got moved over to the Raiders who apparently played him a bit out of scheme (idk if this is true just what some Raiders fans said on Reddit). He did not play well with Oakland earning a 46 and 47 grade from PFF, maybe for the aforementioned scheme fit issues. He then started about half the games in Carolina last year and played fairly well with a 72 PFF grade.

Looks like a guy who probably won’t be all that good but could be a decent stopgap if DeMeco can work with him.

His two best seasons were with the Rams in 2018 and 2019. He played ILB in a 34 defense. 2018 was his pro bowl season, but 2019 season was just as good. He was an undrafted freeagent in 2016. His two seasons with LV, '20 & '21, weren't bad stat wise. Don't know what position he played, or his season with Carolina, 2022.

Sounds like a slightly upgraded Kirksey. Not a terrible signing. I'm guessing the medicals didn't pan out with Denzel so this was a backup plan. I know Denzel was here for two days late last week. Denzel is a legit starter if healthy but the concern was the health. If the medicals were iffy, I'm glad they passed. Nick needs to do that more often and be more discerning with injury risks, especially in high impact positions like MLB.

Looks like they did a darn good job attacking both sides of the ball.

Now all they have to do is nail the draft and it will be the breast offseason ever.

I agree. Nail the draft and breast offseason.

Why does Nick continually give Derek Rivers NFL contracts? 16 career tackles since 2018.

He was signed to the vet minimum of $1,010,000, and if I read it right only the $40k signing bonus was guaranteed. Not sure $1 million is going to hurt the team. And if he doesn't make it through camp it cost $40k.
