2023 Free Agency

If you see a small animal and look it over. It seems to have a long bill. It's got webbed feet, and can fly short distances. It quacks and likes water too. What are you calling it?

Well then it ain't a duck cause a mallard can tote it 800 miles in a day, thats not a short distance! 🦆

So far the two “losses” for the Texans have been Obo and Tremon Smith. If Tavierre Thomas leaves that would be the biggest loss imo. The team has gotten better since free agency began. Have they gotten the big splash additions we all wanted? No. But we all knew that wasn’t likely anyway.

This time last year people were upset that the team let Jacob Martin walk. Obo had done about as much as Chase Winovich prior to his arrival. But a favorable scheme helped him perform.

Hopefully the Texans can find a player that can fill that designated pass rusher role Martin and Obo held the past two seasons. I think Rivers in particular is talented enough. And I suspect he may have even been that guy last season if he hadn’t been injured the end of training camp. He was the most impressive DL in preseason and I am hopeful he breaks out this season.
Will Anderson

Will Anderson

He’d be my pick but it’ll tough to sell a DE over QB at that slot. Maybe DeMeco’s good will can help sell that idea.

I just see Anderson getting the Mario Williams treatment on draft day if the team passes on the player everyone expects. Ironically with the same last name (Young).

Would take some cajones to go Anderson at 2 and either move up from 12 or take the QB that’s left there. But that’s the route I prefer!

I would offer to fans that Anderson could be face of team as was JJ Watt.
If Hooker day 2 is his plan, hard to disguise as QBs slip by to others, yet that can help as teams needing them will hopefully get with top 4 and free agency. I want Rogers to commit to Jets.

One year? That's not a splash, it's a puddle!

Like the player though and he will help for 2023, but this is another one-year deal. The guy will ball out in 23, and then leave. Y'all ok with that?

Nick's vision of team-building is now coming into very clear focus. It's really hard to deny now.

I will say that it can work, but it's a tough row to hoe. You have to put all your eggs into the draft basket to build your core and then resign most of those guys...and simply dabble on the edges in the FA market for bottom of roster and fill-in deficiencies year to year with aging vets looking to rebound or cash in on a longer deal elsewhere.

This puts almost the entire pressure on the draft. Again - this CAN work. It's really not much different than what Dallas does.

But you better be right on most of your day 1 and day 2 draft picks. Nobody is 100% right, but you need to get your big stars, and key long-term contributors via the draft and have far more hits than misses or you will not be a good team and will be churning a ton of players year after year.

What do you guys think of this philosophy now that it's really very clear where he is guiding the ship? You in? Hate it? In between?
I like that philosophy because it’s actually sustainable. No team can continually build through FA. It’s too expensive. This has been proven over and over again. It also CAN work but it’s short sighted.

Rodgers has already committed to Jets. They are just waiting for the Jets and Packers to agree on terms.

Plan could be Hooker day one. Whether its at 12 or a trade back into 1st round. Would you take Hooker at 12 even if he cannot be medically cleared to play this season? Keenum’s contract says they don’t expect him to be a bridge QB.

Anderson would be a luxury pick IMO. Any QB worth a damn will be gone by 12. The QB log jam should mean an edge guy falling that far.

DeMeco was certainly promised a franchise QB to come here. I doubt tanking another year is in the cards.

I'm all in on Hooker and info I'm leaning on indicates to me he will start no later than game 5. Others I've listened to about Keenum say he will do whatever he's asked. If he could start and play well, that would allow any QB to get better. I would not take at 12 as info indicates round 2 to 104. A risk as is everything but one willing to take.

Anderson and Gonzalez would be really good for me. There are cornerbacks I like in round two but would have to trade out of pick 2 to accomplish what i want.
Forbes, Tuipulotu and Foskey or anudike-uzomah would be good round 2.

Where has this notion that Tremon Smith is a loss come from? He is not a loss to this team. Sure he was a great punt/kick returner, but certainly nothing that can’t be easily replaced. Hell his replacement is already on the roster in Desmond King…a guy who not only was an all-pro for ST in 2018, but who also graded out better as a CB over Smith. And With Ward’s ability to play safety and slot, Smith really becomes an expendable player.

This Obo dude isnt really a loss either considering he didn’t really do anything all season. He made a few plays in games late in the season, but He was largely garbage against the run/containment and only mildly a threat as a situational pass rusher. If he got to play against Malik Willis every game he’d be a stud. Pretty confident we can get what we got from him from his replacement Chase Winovich

I'm a fan of Brendel. He said he wanted to stay in SF to finish what they started and took less even. That's remarkable and noteworthy and very, very admirable. We should always want players like that.

It’s kinda frustrating discussing free agency with people that think signing people is like signing player in Madden. These are real people. They have to move their families. They have to change schemes. They have to (in some ways) bet their career on what the coaches on the team want to do with them. You don’t just tell people “PFF has you graded here, so we’re only going to pay you this.”

Very detached from reality.

Do you just have half this forum on ignore? How could you think you’re the only one underwhelmed with Caserio? There’s literally a member who only posts about how much he dislikes Carstereo!
Honestly, I think Caserio is fine. With a normal team he'd be fine. But he doesn't have that it factor. He's the Matt Schaub of QBs. Soon as you come to terms that he's not winning a SB, it's time to move on.

Wasting the 1st two years of DeMeco's career is what we're doing now.

It's not just you and Rivers. Truth is some folks just go along with the train ride no matter how off course the train may go, and how many times the wheels fall off. They will simply make new excuses on top of the old excuses because the truth hurts.

As for me, I'm really disappointed in this FA class. The best decision was the trade with TB. I can also get onboard with Ward - I see the thinking of the vet guy to help Pitre and Sting and be a leader back there for a couple of years. Woods? Meh? Ok I guess but he's not a real difference maker.

Outside of that, this class is a big fat zero to this point. Ya, I know it's not over, blah blah blah. Add in the two major losses in FA and not counting the trade (because that isn't FA) this FA period is a wash at best as of today. We'll see what else happens, but no Center is a HUGE failure on the part of Nick. At this point, I'm interested in a trade for a vet C. We can't go into this with Q and some rookie. No way, no how.

And that's with the 3rd most cap space coming in to FA. SF has no money but got the best DL when they are already stacked. Money can be found for targeted guys. Nick just really likes the bargain bin at the dollar store. I was hoping for at least JC Penney, but oh well. I've accepted my fate as a Texans fan!
I say it all the time, the salary cap is just a traffic cone. You can manipulate and manage it if you know what you're doing.

It was darn better than what it freaking was when he got here. So technically he did fix it whether you want to admit it or not. Facts!

Lol

Neither one of those. I’ll wait until the end of season. I don’t want to make a judgment now, ot I’ll end up eating crow.

Interesting the FA visit. Have not been hearing reports of vets visiting teams until this one but it used to be pretty common. I guess the “legal tampering” changes how business is done.

But in the case of Perryman I suspect it was at the Texans request to get a look at his recent surgery and spot any other medical red flags… which we know will give them the greenlight to backload the contract offer with massive amounts of guaranteed money!

I think this is what most people here want. Build through the draft.

For that to work he has to have a solid coaching staff that actually develops talent. DeMeco’s going to be here six years, but what about our OC, DC, & position coaches? That's what we need a solid HC for. Keep priming that coaching pump.

You act like players have no say in these things? What if Rankins only wanted a 1 year contract? What if he saw the price DTs are going for and said to himself "Damn if I ball out in Ryans' D I can make much more next year"? Is Nick supposed to hit him over the head, stick a pen in his hand, grab the hand and sign Rankins' signature? Maybe use an autopen? Hire a forgerer?
As if he didn't know last year was his money year.

I think these short deals allow Nick to determine if the guys are going to fit, do we want them longer than a year?

We also lost Ogbo & can't expect a repeat from Hughes.

Ogbo wasn’t a major loss imo but yes i agree about Hughes. Im kinda just thinking we won’t necessarily need Hughes to be what he was last year tho if Anderson is drafted because he then becomes that guy. and between Rankins, Greenard, Winovich and Hughes, the pass rush is infinitely better than what it was last year.

We aren't going Anderson but I’d bet some good money we’re gonna go edge defender with 12 or at the very least 33.

He had interest from multiple teams including staying with the Jets. So either everyone offered him a 1 year contract, the Texans offered him a higher one year contract than everyone else, he wanted just a one year contract, or he really wanted to play for the Texans.

Seeing the way free agency has gone, OC has to be a high priority in the draft, higher than edge. Schmitz could go in the bottom of the 1st, but top of 2nd at worst. Wypler will likely be off the board in the bottom half of the 2nd. #33 is where the Texans will need to target this need, maybe after trading down a few spots.

#12? I'm hoping for an offensive skill position/playmaker...TE Michael Mayer.

Odds are pointing toward Young being our selection ar 1.2. The coaching staff is well aware of Young's size limitations and will therefore place building the offense around him the highest priority.
