BADBOY college players to watch 2023 draft

I have been hoping Texans would trade down from 1.1 and still get the QB I anticipate them wanting. I am losing that hope. I think Cal will play a larger role in identifying positions he wants addressed if not the player and perhaps player also. It could have been a diversion or may have meant several things but the info posted that there will be a splash combines with my thinking on this.

No trades:

1.1 Young: risky pick due to size but I think Cal wants the buzz that comes with Bryce Young added to QB position. Stroud is a solid pick but lacks the excitement despite his game versus Georgia which impressed. It remains difficult for me to disregard Mulughetta and I'm fairly certain Cal will not. I am not saying this is my pick or correct selection just Cal's.

1.12 RB Bijan Robinson: 6' 215 I continue to lean towards Quentin Johnston and would be satisfied; yet the idea of adding a Saquon Barkley type to Pierce has to excite Cal.

Even better, would enjoy watching a backfield of Pierce and Charbonnet or Chase Brown or Israel Abanikanda [day three] with Bijan as WR.
http://amp.thecomeback.com/college-football/pitt-rb-israel-abanikanda-320-yards-tony-dorsett.html

I prefer to resolve RB later but this guy is amazing and I suspect he will blow up at combine/pro day.

2.32 WR Rashee Rice: I kept expecting him to taper off but he did not. Height at 6'2 he zones in between Hyatt and Johnson and excellent speed at 4.36. Crazy stats and reviews for day 2.

3.64 OC John Michael Schmitz: If we get Dallas' 2.59 for Cooks I take Schmitz there but this is mock without trades.

3.74 SS J L Skinner 6'4" 220 4 INTs whew would do as well as Pitre in box and has bigger frame will allow Pitre even more range to roam.

Nice post - rec'd. I feel Young will be the pick also because although I think although Young's career could go in a similar trajectory as Murray (no team wants that), it's worth the risk that the Texans get someone like Russell Wilson (or a poor man's Russell Wilson) whose prime game was built on pocket elusivity and explosive strikes out of structure. So I'm warming up to this idea, although may never be completely comfortable with it. Might be worth the risk though.

And out of Bijan Robinson or Quentin Johnson, you just have to take the latter. Again, no slight on Robinson at all. But the Texans need a WR1 in the worst of ways, with Cooks in decline and Nico often hurts. My goodness, we trotted Chris Moore as WR1 in 2 games this year, and he's at the bottom tier of NFL WRs in getting open per play (less than 28%) as per PFF. This was our #1 or #2 WR for most of the year!!

Whatever your opinion on Mills, he was completely set up to fail and lack of WR talent was at the top of the list of contributing factors on why that happened. Let's not risk the same thing with Bryce. Hopefully we can get a LT option at C and another promising guard in the 3-4 rounds also.

I loved Njigba-Smith until he returned and messed up his hammy more. I think he could recover for 2023 but that's risky also. Jordan Addison became my guy but same thing. Boutte was interesting but he got cross wise with HC and IMO should've transferred; just did not seem to play often despite good plays. I think he was talked out of leaving. He could still go high but again if he was the problem and not coach... do we need that? I had watched Hyatt and thought DAMMYUM! In my frequent trade down mocks, I wanted him and Johnston but Rashee Rice just exploded. If readers have not seen him, read the article I posted. He just combines so much of AJ and Nuk that I am blown away. Why take Johnston when you can get another 1st round guy plus your WR later?

Conundrum-- I might take Johnston a WR 1 and get a RB later; I like several as I've mentioned. However, I think Bijan is significantly better at all aspects including blocking and catching the ball.
I could take Bijan and either Hyatt or Rice if there round 2.

Either route helps Young and if we take him, we have to do all we can to help him succeed. A center is a must. I was pushing the trade down scenarios (up to three trades with Seattle, then Lions and finally Panthers) as round two is the $ maker in 2023. Add in that my mock with Carolina brought a one, two seconds and a one in 2024.

To your point for OG: I felt same way but I can see Tunsil, Howard, OC 3rd, AJ Gann/Green and RT Heck. High risk with this is Heck.

I'm hoping Caserio picks 2 C/OG guys in this draft. Depth on the ol is badly needed.

I really like Bijan, and agree he is the best RB in this draft. However, we just have too many other needs to draft a RB in the 1st round. We just don't have that luxury. Likewise, IMO we don't have the luxury to reach for an undersized QB with the #2 pick.

We need to set emotions aside, and do what is best for the long-term success of the team. We need to solidify the middle of the line on both sides of the ball, and we need weapons.

Before we bring in a new QB, I want the new WR's to be here for a year so they can learn the system. I want the new QB to be able to come in and work with experienced WR's instead of all of them trying to learn the system at the same time. The learning curve is much smaller if the receivers already know what they are supposed to do.

If we can fill most of our holes in this draft, when we bring in a QB in '24, he will have a much better chance for success, and a much better chance to make the Texans a contender. If we go this route, I can see our rebuild being over after the '24 season. If we start a rookie QB this year, I think we'll end up extending the rebuild by at least another year, if not more.

Enjoy discussion. Just some scattered thoughts:
WRs after one year receiving from Mills or a Garoppolo vet QB would have to learn a new QB.
What new QB in 2024? Very good odds, the top 2024 QBs will be gone before we pick and teams above us may not want to trade for two round ones outside top 10-12. You just continue to assume too much as in QB in 2024. No one expects us to be 8-9 so take advantage and allow 2023 QB to have his rookie season with Johnston, Rice and Metchie.

Some think Bijan can be there at 33.

WR's after one year in the system will know their routes. They will know the playbook. They will know the system, and be able to help teach the new QB. If the QB and WR's are learning at the same time, it slows down the process.

I don't see Bijan making it past the Eagles first pick. They have the luxury of taking a RB in the 1st, and they don't really want to pay Miles Sanders. Drafting Bijan, and having him locked down for 5 years on a rookie contract is much cheaper than what they would have to pay Sanders on a new contract.

How would you feel about this draft.

Hyatt
Musgrave
Mazi Smith after trading Cooks and 3-73

Sign Bradbury and Givens in FA.

I'm more than willing to go with Jimmy G on a 3 yr deal and there should be one of these QB's available in the top 7 which is where I think the Texans end up.

Williams/Maye/McCarthy

Me, being the eternal optimist, thinks you are underselling the Texans.
I think DR is going to make a huge difference here just going by the excitement of pundits, ex- Texans and current ones.
He and NC should be able to bring in some nice upgrades where we badly need them as well so I am quietly confident we will win the AFCS next year.

Are you speaking Kevin Givens of SF?

Yes, that guy's a playmaker. I also like Kentavious Street IOL Saints (Used to play for the 49ers and Hassan Ridgeway IOL 49ers. These guys should be relatively cheap FA signings.

It is true, the schedule is easier, more talent should be added and hopefully the coaching staff is much better.

You wont find one like Musgrave in FA.

Which FA TE do you like?
to clarify I was talking about no TEs as Vtech9 said but disagreeing with him on not talking about free agent players of all types. I should have made that clear. I am not against Musgrave just don't want one now as we need other spots more. Just the way I read the roster.

Givens is a RFA. I want to see what tender SF gives him

we don't have to be a good WCO first year. The TEs we have can get us thru one year and then get TE if we still need to draft one.

I'm drafting to the strength of the draft this yr. This is a great TE class and Musgrave is well worth 2-32. Musgrave would be TE1 if he hadn't gotten hurt. They will be lucky to get him at 2-32.

I want the QB (If they draft a QB) to have all of the skill guys he needs to be successful.

QB

Pierce/Spears/Ogi/ Maybe Johnson

Musgrave/Quitoriano/Akins/Jordan

Hyatt/Collins/Metchie/Rodgers/Moore/UDFA.

These skill guys would be the best the Texans group in yrs and give a new QB his best chance to succeed. Also spend the money to bring in Bradbury to lead the OL. Depending on who the QB is, this offense with these skill guys should be ranked in the top 15-18. It's been a long time since the skill position guys were threats to score every time they touch the ball.

Musgrave is going to be much better than those guys if he stays healthy. Those guys are going to cost in FA and I'm hoping they spend their money on the defensive side of the ball, bringing in Ryans guys.

Musgrave got embarrassed in Senior Bowl practice today. He tried to block a DE, and got manhandled.

I'm just saying as far as projected draft goes. We can talk about possible FA's, but I'm not going to adjust my draft rankings based on some possible FA we may go after.

We already have 4 TE's on the roster. I don't see them taking another one high.

True

Name one good WCO that doesn't have a dominant well rounded TE?

I believe many of us are selling our current group of TE's short. Jordan Aikens could be an absolute stud if used properly. Teagan Quitoriano has proven he could be effective if actually targeted. Brevin Jordan is a nice change of pace TE/H-Back who could be far more effective if scripted into the game plan. I like Howard b/c he'd remain cheap to keep and definitely has the veteran savvy to be good when needed.

If I were drafting a TE for the WCO......I like Tucker Kraft (6-5 @ 255 lbs) of South Dakota State as a nice fit with this group. Howard would be the odd man out.

I like Kraft too.

Akins will never be a top notch blocker. He's a useful player though. I mean the NYG cut him for a reason.

All of these TE are JAGs

For me to want to draft a tight end, he needs to excel at both blocking and catching. I do not see anyone in this draft that overwhelms me.
Michael Mayer, Notre Dame. And he's done it for 3 years.

We also have Mason Schreck. He's signed to a futures contract. Schreck is 6'-5" and 252 lbs.
