Welcome Home, DeMeco Ryans

People keep wanting Jimmy G. I think he is a good QB, but not a great one. He is a product of a great system. If Ryans can run that same type of system I think Mills could be the same type of QB as Jimmy G. I'd much rather build out the team and roll with Mills (with some decent competition) this year than draft a QB with 1:2

I sure hope we draft QB in the first round this year. We have two firsts. We have the opportunity to take a shot at one of these kids. If the pick fails, oh well at least we didnt waste our only first round pick. Chances are that if the kid doesnt become elite, hopefully he will be serviceable. But still we probably wont get the chance to take a shot at getting an elite QB (unless we get some old QB). I want a dynasty and for that, youve gotta take chances. No guts. No glory.

I do want the kid to sit for a year at least. Also have concerns over Young. His ceiling might be that of a hospital ceiling. At least with one of the others, even if they dont become much, they can still be useful. Again. Two first rounders, we can afford to burn one if the payout is high enough. It lowers the risk having two yet still has a high reward.

I am absolutely STOKED after watching this! Talk about a natural speaker and in total command of the podium. This press conference right here is a really good indicator of how well he speaks and carries himself among a group of people. Pressure? What pressure?!

Let’s go Texans!!!
Been saying this for a hot minute. Not only does he control and command a room but he actually KNOWS WTF he is doing, how to communicate that message and what he wants. If something fails it won’t be because of Ryans leadership.

Curious how many people have both played for and later been HC of the same team (not player-coach)..

Also how many (if any) have been both drafted by a team and went on to their first HC gig with the same team..

The latter is a tough google search.
Mike Ditka was drafted by the Bears in 1961 and his first HC job in 1983

edit: Fun Fact- Ditka was also drafted in 1961 by the Houston Oilers in the first round

I understand it was his first day on the job and everything is new and he's going through OJT. I thought DeMeco sounded every bit just like an LB coach or a DC. Demeco is now the HC. If Demeco hires coordinators who have never been coordinators before then that will be a reason for concern for me. Red Flag. Everyone in the organization now looks up to DeMeco. He has to motivate the entire organization, not just the players.

Really? Do you really think BOB and Jack motivated the entire organization when he was up 24-0 in KC? So the failure that day was in part because Jack Easterby and Bill failed to motivate the ENTIRE organization?

If DeMeco does his job the way everyone hopes he does, then we're not picking as high next year unless Cleveland caves horribly. That's my issue. This is the year we have the draft capital to do it right, but I'm just so wary of the top rated QBs. But, next year we might have to sacrifice some serious draft capital to get one of the hot ones.

It's a dilemma.
Very well stated. My eval of Mills is no one will develop him into a starter and neither will better surrounding players. If they could, i don't see him as a QB that leads us to SB. We have to get Stroud or Young and if he busts we go again with high pick we'd have. My main concern is Mills and team does enough to get us out of range in 2024 but back into twilight zone of bad QB play for years.

I don't want to go back to drafting in the twenties.

OK watching the press conference..... I get the feeling Demeco is going to ride it out with mills atleast for this season. The way he spoke about the QB position and the way he talked about developing players. I got that vibe.... anyone else?
No. He hasn't been HC long enough to have evaluated anyone. Also, he is a defensive coach and hasn't hired his OC.

I don't want Jimmy G, but we know he's not going back to SF. And who knows him better than DeMeco? And Caserio too for that matter.

Regardless of what people here think of this years QB class, I fear that if the Texans don't take their shot, they're going to be dealing with these mid level QBs for awhile.

And let's stop with the Davis Mills crap. I know we're all excited about DeMeco and all, but Mills is trash.

I am not a garoppolo fan but if davis Mills can equal Jimmy garoppolo I would be good with him going forward as starter in 2023.

We don't need a useful quarterback, we need one if selected in the top 8 that will start immediately. Agree that it should be this way or not, Cal went big with Demeco but he needs to keep this excitement going. Ryans plus Young [more so than Stroud] is excitement that buys tickets and gear; more importantly sells advertising.

I agree. Him being on that cheap deal would make it even sweeter. Besides, say he in fact does equal Jimmy G, how much would he command come contract time? 15-20 per year?

Have season ticket sales picked up? Anyone know?
I know they haven't called me to renew in 3 years, but they had the gall to call me a couple days ago.

I explained to him I'm broke & couldn't if I wanted to.

He said, "I understand, how about I call you back when they hire a new HC."

I was like, "dude, I'll still be broke. That's how I roll."

But he sounded pretty excited & confident I'd change my mind. Like he knew something.

Anyone ask him about screen plays?

If true, it makes no sense to me.

Poor Nick. Always player 2 on Mario Cart. :gamer:

It's a lost cause. lol

I agree. For me, I'd be stoked if they picked Will Anderson. Let DeMeco build his defense. If you can stop them from scoring, it makes the job for the offense that much easier.
Just my two cents but Foskey and Felix anudike-uzomah were as good as Anderson in 2022. If we could get the 2021 Will, he'd be best player in draft.

dude I hear ya, Mills is not the guy.

Id take jimmy G any day over Mills.

Of course, man. But it's easier to get the defense going, especially under a defensive-minded HC.

I don't want them reaching on a QB if they can't protect him. If there is anything they learned from the David Carr years, it's being able to protect your rookie QB while he develops.
why can't they protect a QB?

As I see it, we have two choices. Draft a QB this year and ride him in the hopes that we can support him well enough for him to develop and succeed. The other option is to bring in a competent experienced QB and wait for next years draft for one of the top choices. Both present issues. If we pick Young, can we protect him well enough to keep him semi-healthy. Stroud is probably more durable, but not as dynamic. Levis is a true feast or famine player. Could be spectacular or could be a real bust. If we pick up a solid QB to get us to next year, there is a very strong likelihood that we would be picking in the 12-20 range. To move up to the 1-4 range to get the next great hope will cost some serious draft capital. The wailing and nashing of teeth by the draftnicks will be loud and continuous and has zero guarantee that it will even be available to do or even work. Personally, I like the idea of sort of doing both. Picking up a guy like Jimmy G to a three year contract. (say what you will, the guy can play winning football. Just has trouble staying up right). keeping Mills as the third QB. Drafting one of the three top QBs and sitting them. In Youngs case, get a serious muscle and weight program going. Intense teaching programs for any of them and then see where we are at. If we think we are still in the toilet, then spend whatever we have to to go get the next football god.

Skoronski and Paris Johnson will most likely be top 15 picks. O'Cyrus Torrence will probably be a late 1st round, early 2nd round pick. If you take two of those guys, you don't get Quentin Johnston or Rashee Rice.

Cann is 31, and may not fit in with the new offense. McCray is not very good. The 2002 Oline was a mix of veterans and rookies. The top LT didn't play because of injury. if Tunsil goes out, where are we? I mean, it's not like injuries happen or anything. Tunsil may have a pinky injury that keeps him out for the season. I mean, things happen.
I don't need two. Skoronski can play all spots including OC as he did in high school. Take him at 12 and Schmitz with a second for Cooks or he just might be there at 65. I think Ryans and his staff review Oline and decide OC is all we HAVE to have and a FA like Bradbury could be great.

Tunsil out would be same if most of our starters go out; we are not deep. How many games has he missed in NFL?
Cann can (pun intended) fit in WCO.
McCray is FA and gone. Deculus and Heck may play greater role even if Howard is moved to LG and Green to right side.

You are ok with G not staying up but not Young who may not have an issue staying up in the NFL? We know the vet cannot stay healthy and some guess based upon 'no one else has done it'.

Me too, if I could get JimmyG for less than we're paying Mills.

What exactly do you think the goal is next season?

The goal is to be better. Doesn't mean record has to pan out. Doesn't mean someone is an MVP candidate or whatever.

The goal is to be better and we know what that looks like. A cohesive unit. A team that has put the last 9 years behind them and has an upward trajectory. Make teams say we gotta worry about these guys now?

In that respect, it's easier to get to that point by stocking the cupboard so to speak rather than starting with the superstar QB and filling in around him.

The more I think about it, the more I want the vet QB route.

We may very well be closer than we think. All those one score games could have easily gone our way with the right leadership, tightened up coaching and player performance, etc. Then we're having a different conversation.

Getting a vet QB might be viewed as "punting" or "throwing away a season" but I think it kind of shows the opposite, in a way. It says we bring in a guy who can at least play competently while teaching a prospect we nab later if we like better prospects at other positions, that the competence they play with will help a team that is young everywhere else, etc.

I don't know. Many different ways to go. Nice feeling to have, to be honest.

I don't think Deculus makes the team. He's got dead feet. He's a plodder. Tunsil missed most of the '21 season with a thumb injury.

Schmitz is the best C in the draft. He's expected to go late in the 2nd, but he's having a good Senior Bowl week so we may have to take him at 2.34 or miss out on him. I wasn't impressed with Arkansas C Stromberg in the Senior Bowl, and if he can't handle Senior Bowl DT's, I don't trust him to be able to handle NFL DT's.

There’s a few pictures of DeMeco with his former teammates that showed up at the press conference. There’s also pictures of him with the current Texans players that showed up. Looks like 27 former teammates. While only 10 current Texans showed up. It might not mean much but it makes ya wonder about the players that didn't show. Though I didn’t even know if players normally show up to these. Maybe it just says a lot about DeMeco. Him inspiring those former players to come from all around to support him.

I am not going to read much into the presser other than all excited.

I wouldn't read anything into it. To me, anybody showing up at all is impressive. Who the hell goes otherwise?

I gotta say though, the choice of wardrobe by some of the players current and former. You're not going to the workout room, guys. It's a press conference. Smh.

Current players??? Hell I'm sure the only ones who showed up are the ones who know they are safe next season, everyone knows we have a bunch of guys here who won't be here for long. I'm sure those guys know who they are and are most likely the ones who wouldn't show up.... IMO.
