Texans random thought of the day

If this is true (and I have no reason to believe it's not), it blows my mind that a retread like Lovie was in a position to demand anything from an NFL owner and GM.

And if this is the type of beta behavior that we can expect going forward, then it is clear that Caserio has no 'grand vision' to build a successful NFL franchise. He's grasping at straws and then has plausible deniability in his pocket if the picks don't work out. He can just blame the coaches and act like he was always a team player.
Caserio is carrying out Cal's wishes and is being paid handsomely to so.

Agreed,

Caserio wanted Gannon and Cal told Caserio that Lovie had to be on the staff and Gannon said thanks but no thanks.
I'm not so sure this is the case. Caserio established this MO when he hired all the assistant coaches before he hired David Culley. He was doing the same thing with Gannon and all HC interviews. Regardless off who got hired, Caserio was hiring the coaches and wearing headphones in the coaches box on Sundays. Lovie told Cal this was simply not going to happen if he accepted HC job. Lovie hired his own coaches and NOW say it with me.....
LOVIE. KICKED. CASERIO. OUT. OF. THE. COACHES. BOX. AND. TOOK. AWAY. HIS. HEADPHONES.

…and the offense and team regressed when those headphones were taken away.

Hmmm.

Interesting Schaub snippet from lil Shanny:

Shanahan compared working with Purdy to working with Matt Scauab, and noted that Purdy doesn’t need much praise when talking about his play.

“I remember when I used to meet Matt Schaub on the bus after we would land somewhere,” Shanahan said, “and we’d always watch the game on the plane, and I’d go sit by him and I would be like, ‘All right, man, you did play really good except for plays nine, 12 and 13.’ And he’d always go, ‘Oh, what about the plays I played good on?’ I’m like, ‘Those don’t matter. That’s what we expect.’

“But when you have guys who just want to be coached and you don’t need to tell them 10 compliments before you tell them a coaching point, then it’s a lot more fun, and I think that’s how he gets better.”

A lapdog is a lapdog regardless of how much he's paid.

If this is the case, then this franchise is doomed to perpetual failure with the occasional rise to mediocrity (which is why they celebrate winning the division like's it's a Super Bowl).

I suppose all employees that follow their bosses instructions are lapdogs?

Kinda harsh.

Plain and Simple, Caserio is not a decision-maker. He is a follower. He is in way over his head. Clearly evident by his decision to trade for players who were going to be cut and pay them $6MM instead of a vet minimum. Restructured contracts and then cut that player. Traded draft picks for players he cut shortly after trading for them. In year 1 of a rebuild with 10 draft picks, he drafts 5 players. There is an argument that is on the coaches (Pep) but it is really on Caserio for letting that happen. In 2 drafts there has clearly been no game plan. None of this is logical and void of basic common sense.

I'd venture that an NFL general manager making millions every year is not your average employee.

And yes, by the very definition of lapdog - a person that is controlled by another - it is what it is. I'm a lapdog to my customers. It's how/why I get paid.

Overall point is this organization will always be below average if the McNairs are making football decisions, regardless of whatever lapdog they pay to be their GM.

Great post

And. It doesn't matter who the GM or HC is, the McNair's are profiteers, nothing more or less.

If the Texans win a championship it will be inspite of the McNair's.

When you are the subject expert you can’t be a lapdog. It’s not going to work.

Trying to understand what you are saying.

The subject matter expert (SME) provides the knowledge and expertise in a specific subject, business area, or technical area for a project/program.

So Caserio provides the knowledge. expertise etc, and the boss ignores it. That makes Caserio a lap dog? I call BS on that.

IMO This name calling is a poorly disguised attempt to denigrate the man.

:coffee:

Why is this lap dog buisness even being debated? Cal owns the team and everyone else falls beneath him. That's the structure. Period.
Because Easterby & BO'b were able to play that fiddle & Caserio can't penetrate that intellect.

You know, while we had Pierce in the backfield our offense was much more effective.
This is why we need another bull back there to take over when one gets injured.
Now, when we have both available, that raises our offensive potential another notch...
Draft another NC.

Draft another NC.

With Pierce - 16.2 points per game, 193 total yards per game, 90 rushing yards per game.
Without Pierce - 15.3 points per game, 260 total yards per game, 86.6 rushing yards per game.

That doesn't look "much more effective" to me.

BTW, after Pierce's last game he was 7th in the NFL in rushing yards, but as a team the Texans were 28th in rushing yards.

I'm hoping Caserio adds a guy like CEH on the cheap and Roschaun Johnson or Taje Spears.

Would you rather see Rex, or the the other guy or Peirce with the ball in his hands?

Yeah they could be good, but I'm pumping for higher ceiling guys because until we get our passing game figured out, we need all the help we can get on the ground.

Assuming that Caserio has to follow Cal’s directive on HC fires the biggest miss of his tenure (besides the HC selections which is clearly #1) is the poor selection of veteran leadership.

There are two quitters that Caserio re-signed to this team to be veteran leaders. Britt and Cooks. Little wonder why the team regressed from the 3rd worst team in the league this season.

When Kirksey was your biggest hit for veteran leadership you’ve got problems.

A very fair criticism.

Caserio doesn't hire or in this case even suggest the Lovie hire. Caserio wanted Gannon.

Only because everyone else got hired while he played around with Flores & McCown.

He wanted Flores, after Flores filed the lawsuit that was off of the board.

McCown was Easterby/Janice's guy.

Gannon was Caserio's guy after Flores.

Gannon would be a really good hire. Bringing in Reich as OC and the Philly LB Coach as DC would be a good start. Gannon has already worked with Ross in the past. All they really need to find is a OL coach. I dont know about Gannon's connections with OL coaches, but I certainly like the Philly OL.

You sure about that? Maybe OConnel was his guy but Minnesota hired him while he was playing with McCown.

I’m saying we don’t know as they stacked the deck from the get go. They were debating Flores & McCown & everything else was for show

They needed to start over. And they need to start over. Gannon should not be the “favorite” if they start a new search next season. It needs to be a new search

Flores was Caserio's 1st choice and Gannon was his 2nd choice.

I'm hoping for Kalfka, but Gannon has really impressed me this yr and I believe it was Aaron Wilson who laid out a possible list of possible asst coaches he's worked with before. It was impressive.

Wait. What? Caserio's first choice was Josh McDaniels but he wouldn't return Nick's calls, then Flores was fired, and Nick fired Culley thinking Flores was his guy. Then came the lawsuit and then came Nick's 3rd choice, Josh McCown. How quickly we forget. When that failed to materialize for the obvious reason, Nick turned to his 4th choice, Gannon. When Gannon withdrew because of control issues and not being able to hire his own coaching staff, Nick was back at square one. That's when Cal said I got it, I can take it from here.

I'm all-in on Wes Phillips, Vikings are 12- 4, the #2 team in passing, and Kirk Cousins is a top 5 QB. That is unless Mike McDaniel is fired.

I think Gannon has had enough of the Texans. After withdrawing his name last year I can't see Gannon wanting to do it again. In reality, he has already been interviewed. Now if Caserio is out then maybe he reconsiders. If another team is interested in Gannon the Texans are likely out. Texan's best chance is Caserio is out and the Texans' job is his only offer.

Jay Glazer just said this about Lovie and Caserio on Fox pregame, one or both could be gone after today.
