Texans random thought of the day

Knuckleheads. Rappoport did release a report that the Texans FO thought Kubiak had too much control over player acquisitions and that DL was not being rotated enough. Kubiak was fired not long after.

2 reasons why Cal will not fire Lovie and Nick this year.

1. Cal is already on the lamb for $22 million for firing David Culley. Cal is not prepared to pay another $22 million to Lovie Smith and another $20 million to Nick Caserio if he fires them both next week. That's over $60 million. That's a lot of stupidity. This will be easier to swallow next year.

2. Cal now understands that he was bamboozled by Bill O'Brien and Jack Easterby when they sold him a bill of goods on Caserio and is not prepared to go thru another head coach search circus with Cal for the 3rd time in 3 years.

At the beginning of the season, expectations were not for a winning season, but there was no intention to tanking or specifically going for the #1 pick in the 2023 Draft. This season was intended to serve as a building block for the future. This season has been a total abortion, and powers that be are not happy about being seen as the laughing stock of the NFL. There are many reasons for this fiasco outcome. And most of it is being considered to be rightfully dropped smack dab in the lap of the coaching............the worst coming from the top, with the smell permeating everyone below. I have heard nothing that would make one believe that without major coaching changes, the ship can avoid sinking further into the deep abyss.

Easy for me to believe as I feel exactly the same way. I understand the “process” I understand “rebuilding” but Houston is the only team picking top five in 2022 & 2023.

The Jets have had crappy QB play but they’ve won more than 4 games.

I expected bad. I didn’t expect worst.

The NYJ also have a lot more talent on their team than the Texans do.

I tried to tell you this was another 4 win yr because of the talent. If they win Sunday which I expect them to do, that's 3 wins and a tie. This is what rebuilding looks like. Drafting a QB because you need one is the fastest way to set a franchise beck.

Yeah, but before now they have always had other factors to fall back on to excuse it.
They could point to the GM situation as if their hand was forced into a bad situation and blame that, they could blame the Watson situation, going back further they’ve been able to blame being an expansion franchise and it all being part of the process.
Nowadays, they are trying to failing at rebuilding after a huge swing and miss at making a run for a championship, been in the doldrums for years and years, and stepping out in front of a half empty stadium that used to be sold out regardless.
This is the worst it has been and they have come to the realisation that the promote from within philosophy has doomed them, it might work on a successful coaching staff, you can’t promote from within when those coaches were already failing. Lovie and Pep hadn’t earned those promotions and it has reflected in the regression this season.

Rebuilding is when you win more games in the 2nd year than you win in the 1st year. This is nothing short of the complete opposite of what rebuilding is supposed to be and is exactly what I predicted would happen the day Easterby and Cal hired Nick Caserio. I’m still waiting on the Texans to take that first step forward. You used to be as good at making Texans predictions before you lost your way. DeShaun Watson tweeted somethings never change, unfortunately, he was right.

I also said Cal and company would piss away the Watson ransom. Texans are well on their way to doing just that. What else would you expect from the groundwork that O’Brien and Easterby.? They still have a very strong influence on the decisions and operations of the Texans today.

It looks like Derek Carr is off the table - for Texans at least. His brother David went on record as saying Derek is looking for a team with a "stable" relationship between HC FO.
That to me seems directly aimed at Texans as our HC is almost certainly not going to be a HC with Texans next season.
Carr also has a no trade clause in his contract so he can basically pick and choose where he goes.

......until they release him 3 days after the season concludes. No one will be trading for Carr either b/c no one wants his contract.

This should come as no surprise, as the entire league sees Cal and the Texans as the laughing stock and total embarrassment of the NFL. As long as Nick Caserio is the GM, Bill O'Brien and Jack Easterby will be quasi-running this team since Caserio did come with the highest recommendations from O'Brien and Easterby. And why he was hired.

So Caserio isn't getting heat for the roster he built? Not saying Smith & company have done an adequate job. They need to go. But this roster was built to lose. I'm OK with that. But anyone that doesn't realize that fact has their head in the sand.

Rebuilding is.about gathering talent and I liked the last draft. Records shouldn't matter at this point.

If you want to say they had a bad draft, then according to your own words that's on Lovie. I disagree with this statement, although I would have gone a much different direction in the draft.

The roster, starting with Mills wasn’t going anywhere but we all expected to win more than 2 games at this point. Play calling has been suspect all year.

Another player - Burkhead may be one the roster but that doesn’t mean they should have given the ball to him instead of Pierce when he was healthy. Was this a Pep call or a Lovie call?

If Caserio is that errand boy for Lovie that people are making him out to be, and Lovie has control of the roster possibly, then it is increasingly on Lovie.

Caserio should be feeling some heat for some the draft trades he made starting with the Mechie one. No one knew he was going to get cancer but that was a lot of draft capital to give up on one player. Plus some of his salary cap moves. Trading away 6ths for players he cut.

About the time Bill O'Brien was running Rick Smith out of town (2017), O'Brien was strongly pushing Bob McNair to bring in O'Brien's personnel guy Nick Caserio. It's no secret that Bob wanted to do for O'Brien what he did for Kubiak by bringing in Kubiak's guy, Rick Smith. When Bob couldn't hire Caserio, he hired Brian Gaine. After Bob passed O'Brien brought Jack Easterby into the organization. Cal blindly waved his approval. Only those who wear tin hats would not know this.

Again no secret that Jack Easterby went to the Pats ring ceremony, and sat next to Nick Caserio. Easterby came back the next day convinced the Texans would hire Caserio, so the Texans fired Brian Gaine the next day. In typical Texans fashion, the Pats slapped tampering charges on the Texans, so Cal thought it would be a good idea, at Jack Easterby's urging, to make Bill O'Brien the GM instead. Again, only those who wear tin hats would not know this.

The following year JJ Watt and the locker room told Cal that O'Brien had to go. So, Cal fired O'Brien in-season and made Jack Easterby General Manager. The season ended on Jan. 3rd and Nick Caserio was no longer under contract with Pats. Early on Monday morning, Jan 4th, Jack Easterby was at Cal's house to tell Cal they had to fire up the jet and go to Boston to interview Nick Caserio or Nick could be on his way to Carolina. Cal did as he was told, ignored the search firm, and the next day, Tuesday, Jan 5th Cal and Jack Easterby hired Nick Caserio.

Now, you really have to live under a rock if you don't know any of this. The reason I know all of this and you don't, is I am much better informed.

If you listen to Nick's press conference after the 1st rd. he pretty much tells you that Lovie and his coaches were responsible for making the draft picks and it was Nick's job to carry out their decisions. Now you may choose to ignore Nick's comments, much like you did when Lovie took away Nick's headphones and kicked him out of the coaches box. The handwriting is still on the wall, regardless. You may be in denial that Lovie had demands that had to be met before he would agree to become the head coach and Cal was all too happy to oblige him.

Cal should be more concerned with this city perceiving his franchise as a laughing stock and total embarrassment. The pulse of average Texans fans is apathy at best, absolute disgust at worst. Good luck selling those overpriced season tickets to this fan base.

I'm not in denial at all.

Lovie gave Caserio his preferences on players and Caserio went out and tried to get those players. (Even in the 1st rd.) Don't believe me? Look at the video of them high 5 ing after the Harris pick.

Lovie wanted Stingley over Sauce, you know how I know this? Because Lovie worked out both Stingley and Sauce.

Caserio and Lovie worked together, but ultimately Caserio is in charge of making the final calls and he screwed up the Sauce pick. ( Not saying Stingley will be a bad player) I don't feel the same way about the Green pick. Green was playing well until he got hurt.

I was hoping for a Crane type rebuild, not gonna happen and it's not surprising with the McNair's ownership.

I suggest you go back and listen to Nick's press conference after Rd 1. I don't want to take away your headphones and kick you out of the coaches box. Believe it or not, Cal gave Lovie control of the roster and all player personnel decisions. Lovie demanded it and Cal OK'd it.

If you do watch Nick's presser, you will find Nick discussing how the coaches were debating the pick right up until it was time to make the pick. Nick said Lovie would've been fine if the decision had gone in a different direction. So I take from your comments the defensive coaches were debating Sauce vs Singletary. What I take from Nick's comments is that neither Nick nor Lovie made the #3 decision. Lovie deferred that decision to his D coaches. I have no doubt that Lovie promised pick #15 to Warhop to get him on board.

You'll find this pattern of behavior is pretty much what happened in the 2022 draft and that's how Pep walked away with Mills and Collins straight out of the gate.

As far as the Harris pick, Lovie's son, LB coach, Miles Smith had a hardon for Harris and Lovie told Nick to go get him. The reason for the high-fiving and hugging is Nick was able to trade up and get Lovie's son the player he coveted. Lovie really didn't care how much they had to give up, to move up, as long as Miles was able to get his guy. Caserio was really in his element, doing what he had been doing for Belichick for all those years. That's who Caserio is, he's a facilitator, he's not a decision maker.

This last draft was really more like a backyard BBQ with a game of Wheel of Fortune being played by the coaches. For Lovie, it was more important to make sure as many coaches were able to get a pick than what players were on the board.

If this is true (and I have no reason to believe it's not), it blows my mind that a retread like Lovie was in a position to demand anything from an NFL owner and GM.

And if this is the type of beta behavior that we can expect going forward, then it is clear that Caserio has no 'grand vision' to build a successful NFL franchise. He's grasping at straws and then has plausible deniability in his pocket if the picks don't work out. He can just blame the coaches and act like he was always a team player.

There has to be some sort of similarity between the way Cal dealt with OB giving him total control and then getting fired. (Lovie?)

Then the way Cal dealt with Easterby and allowed him to push blame on OB and wasn’t held accountable until the press leaks. (Caserio?)

Dunno.

I still have belief, though it has lessened in recent weeks, that Caserio can navigate it all, finally hire a real HC, and complete the rebuild of the Texans.

The last paragraph is the most important. Is Cal finally going to let Caserio hire his guy as HC?

IMO the reason Cal hired Lovie at the last minute is that Caserio had struck out with all of his previous attempts to hire a head coach (McDaniels, Flores, McCown, Gannon) and was virtually back in square one starting all over again. Cal had seen enough and said I'll take it from here. This also tells me Cal now knows that O'Brien and Easterby did a snow job on him with Caserio. The first indicator that Caserio was no longer the chief bottle washer is when Lovie took away his headphones and kicked him out of the coach's box. Some of the Kool-Aid drinkers fail to accept the obvious and remain in denial. When I saw how the draft was handled and that Lovie's coaches were making all the picks, there was no doubt in my mind Lovie was in charge. Caserio said as much in his press conference after the 1st RD. Caserio also had an attitude change right after Lovie was hired. Caserio's comments went from me and I to we and us.

I tried to tell you this was another 4 win yr because of the talent. If they win Sunday which I expect them to do, that's 3 wins and a tie. This is what rebuilding looks like. Drafting a QB because you need one is the fastest way to set a franchise beck.

It’s not true


But they were desperate. Lovie didn’t want to be HC. Nick didn’t want Lovie to be HC. But Nick screwed the pooch & it is what it is.

Caserio wanted Gannon and Cal told Caserio that Lovie had to be on the staff and Gannon said thanks but no thanks.

Look at Lovie's last two HC gigs, I expected this.
