Derek Stingley vs. Sauce Gardner

All WR's push off and most times get away with it......I thought Stingley got hosed on both calls, but honestly that's gonna continue to happen as the league places more & more emphasis on points & scoring. But Sutton pushed off pretty hard at the top of his break on the slant for the 1st PI call & as I said in an earlier post, The 2nd long pass PI call, that really should've been a no call...both guys were hand fighting with their inside arm. On the telecast they said Stingley pulled Sutton's arm down preventing him from making the catch..& he did but that was as the ball arrived which is supposed to be ok. In watching it closely tho, Sutton is actually the one who grabbed Stingley's arm to pull it down to prevent him from getting his hands on the ball right before the ball arrived.....as the screenshot below shows....

So although he was called for PI, it was more of a reputation call (vet vs. rook). Sting's technique was excellent on this play tho. He subtly and successfully got on top of the route & squeezed that sideline cushioning once he knew it was going deep. They teach you as cb to do that for a number of reasons. 1, for location of the WR & ball in space..the key here is you gotta look back for the ball & you have to be subtle about getting on top of them & cutting them off..which Sting is from the 1st screenshot. 2, you as the cb want to squeeze that 5 yard protective cushion on the sidelines the WR is protecting for the QB to "error" on his throw. WR's tend to want to run around any resistance you're offering and veer outside towards the sideline when you get on top of them..which decreases that cushioning for error..which in turn makes it just a little harder throw for the qb to drop in there without erroring on their placement. Finally, when you get in their hip pocket like Sting was on this route, it inadvertently takes away that inside arm of the WR & makes it difficult for them to reach out and catch the ball with both hands if your body is blocking them from raising that arm up..Sutton literally had to pull Sting's arm down to get his inside arm free b/c was so closely in his hip pocket there.

Clinic **** right there.
excellent post

Again misleading b/c Fields is trash & the Bears WR core is poop nuggets as well....

The Texans are asking a lot of Derek Stingley Jr. right out of the gate. This week, he covered Mike Williams almost exclusively, and the results were pretty ugly. He had a couple of solid reps on the outside, but there were some miscommunications in the Texans' secondary and Williams gave him problems with anything in-breaking. In total, Stingley gave up 122 yards and eight catches.

Sauce Gardner is playing as well as just about any rookie in the league this season. Against Pittsburgh, he was targeted seven times but allowed only two catches for nine yards. On top of that, he intercepted one of those targets and broke up another. He already looks like a high-level cornerback.

Sauce #1 on this list; Stingley not on the list at all

At least Pitre and Pierce made the list. If Green and Stingley can make the list before seasons end....Caserio's draft would look even better considering Metchie and Harris haven't played a snap yet. It could be another week or after the bye before Harris hits the field. Not sure when Deculus will finally get his opportunities on the field. Hopefully sooner than later.

I'm feeling good about Green and Stingley making the list. Cant wait to see Harris in action.

Who cares about one random person’s list? If you feel Stingley and Green are playing well and a positive part of the team playing up to their draft status then it doesn’t matter where they land on a random list.

As for Gardner. He is a heck of a player who is playing in a scheme that is not asking as much of him as the Texans are asking of Stingley. Would he perform as well in Stingley’s current situation? Maybe. Maybe not.

Lol, Mike Williams only had 120 yards recieving in total a large swath of which came on 1 play that wasn't on Stingley.......so somebody is lying....Its clear tho that some folks on this website don't really know what they looking at.

This is just more drivel from Daniel Jerermiah put out there for clicks...............who we also know is quite terrible at his job..& obviously isn't really watching these guys. The whole list is invalidated considering he has Breece Hall listed above 2 guys on our team in Pierce and Pitre...1 of which is legitimately in the running for DROY and the other who to my knowledge is the only rook with a 100 yard rushing game. Hell someone just posted something that ranked Pitre as like the 4th best safety in the league...something i disagreed with at the time...Yet on Jeremiah's list he's the 9th best rookie? Let alone Stingley not even being on the list considering he's manning up the team's #1.

Until Kenny Pickett got inserted into the starting lineup last week Stingley has been asked to do more than any other rookie currently playing imo.

As in with all things dealing with sports media they will spin any information in favor of New York when it isn’t accurate.

You are correct. It is all for clicks and money.

Stingley is asked to check every teams best receiver. You’re not shutting down any top notch receiver like that. You can make them work, something Stingley has done so far.

Its really no cmparision to both guys in my eyes. Stingley is being asked to do more with less...no pass rush or offense to assist him...& he's traveling. Sauce is being asked to do less with more. Jets pass rush is better than the Texans..offense is a little/alot better than the Texans. The quality of qb's & WR's Stingley has faced has also been worlds better. Its only a competition b/c Stingley got selected before the hype machine that is Gardner & the NY media. Since the 2nd game, Stingley hasn't come close to giving up a TD. Every game it seems Sauce has been close to giving up a TD..last week the refs helped him out again.

Some people let others do their thinking for them.

Great post

Actually, they both are doing what the coach has asked them to do. Stingley has played well as has Sauce. Two things can be true at the same time. I would rather see Stingley play press man on 1 side and roll the other side but Lovie do Lovie things.

Why is the Jets pass rush and offense better? Who do they have rushing the passer among their rebuild when they traded everyone a couple of years back? Who on their offense makes it better when their ol is a sieve because the tackles are on ir and all the have is Corey Davis , G5 ( just drafted) and Berrios the returner?

Jets have multiple talented 1st round picks on DL as well as high priced FA Carl Lawson. Quinnen Williams and Solomon Thomas both top 5 picks interior DL and though haven’t lived up to draft status are more talented than any DT Texans have currently. Sheldon Rankins another 1st round DT.

Add in 1st round steal Jermaine Johnson.

And that is not to mention their most productive DL John Franklin-Myers last two seasons who did enough to earn a 4 year 55 million extension last year.

Add in they have a HC known for maximizing his DL talent in Saleh and that is where the Jets pass rush is coming from.

As for the offense… they are as bad as Texans offense but the D has more talent.

. i’d take their Front 7 as a whole with thomas the Williams bros and Alexander over ours. They’re better across the board than we are in terms of defensive stats…Younger guys etc.
they’ve also been able to make defensive stops late in games to help their team win games. That aint just the sauce gardner effect.

Offensively, they had a vet qb in flacco pull a rabbit out of a hat for 1 win and Wilson & Hall are starting to cone on for them. They’re also into year 2 of the same offense…i.e. continuity…which is not the case for us.

Maybe they arent better…maybe its just been who they’ve played thus far…which collectively isnt great. But those things are of an advantage for Sauce.

Wilson/Wilson/Davis/Barrios/Conklin/Hall/Carter > by a good amount than

Mills/Cooks/Collins/Moore/ Whatever trash is playing TE/Pierce/And for God's sake Burkhead.

The only place the Texans have an advantage is maybe Pierce > Hall, but not by much.

Impressed with Jets management change. Both GM Joe Douglas and HC Robert Saleh. Great draft. Noticeable improvement at all levels, but it really started last year which I’m hoping, is this year for Texans? Statement could sum up this Texans season.

"These are all scars that they are getting," Saleh said during his first season. "They're learning. You have to learn not to lose first. Then, once you learn how not to lose, you figure out how to win. Then, once you learn how to win, you have to learn how to close games."

If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. I'd much rather have Stingley going up against the other team's #1 WR's & getting burned from time to time. If he's as good a CB as we believe he is & his confidence never fades, he WILL get better. Besides, with us still in a rebuild mode, this is a good time to let him learn under fire.

They let the young guys play while the Texans loaded up with vets looking for a paycheck. I've watched the Jets this season, they're not that good. Even in that comeback win, alot of things went right. I can see why they like Wilson, but that dude is as erractic as Murray. He has no discipline in or around the pocket.

Thomas who? The bust that has been on 4 teams in 5 years?

No different than Maliek Collins…both guys had bad stints with the raiders…but Thomas has been more productive
Except Thomas was the reason they passed on Mahomes and Watson. They kept drafting guys, he stayed hurt and non productive. He was supposed to be a Warren Sapp type of 3 tech, but really he's just a jag. At least Maliek has been a good player, Rankins also, but Thomas? Nah

when has maliek been a good player? At best he’s been a JAG everywhere hes gone.

Of course, they're not that good, they have been historically bad, could argue the worst run football franchise in the NFL? Still Bad, is far better than they've been past four decades. I'm not a huge Wilson fan either but maybe there is something there? Offensive line must improve, like the Texans, but they have more pieces in place in very short order.
