NFL Random Thought of the Day

Before the end of the Bills-Panthers game, when head coach Sean McDermott would be peppered with questions regarding the situation at his postgame presser, Araiza preemptively released a statement, relayed to the media by his agent, Joe Linta.

“The facts of the incident are not what they are portrayed in the lawsuit or in the press. I look forward to quickly setting the record straight.”

Sounds like a familiar statement, like the one from..........................

Tom Brady's interior line took another few hits. C Robert Hainsey injured his left ankle and didn’t return. Then, starting LG Nick Leverett came in to replace him injured his shoulder forcing the Bucs to rely on a fourth center, John Molchon. The Bucs already lost Pro Bowl C Ryan Jensen earlier.

TJ Watt suffered a knee injury with the same type of low cut block that injured Thibideaux. Its exact extent is not yet determined. Defensive players are callling for the cut block to be outlawed.

I would tend to agree. Small mistakes in its application or how to respond to it easily lead to significant injuries. Cut blocking is not practiced by any team..........nor would it be a good idea in that significantly more of these injuries would result.

Najee Harris reveals he suffered Lisfranc injury in training camp per Will Silva of GMFB
If he tries to return to play within 4-6 weeks, (even with a Grade I Lisfranc which I have to assume from the predicted return) as the team is reporting, he will very likely end up extending the injury resulting in need for surgery. Athletes with Grade I injuries can have excellent outcomes with conservative treatment, but they will typically require anywhere between 10‐18 weeks to return safely.

Apparently it is used by other teams since these 2 guys got hurt by cut blocks. Cut blocks have been around since the beginning of football. I hope they stay around because they're what make the ZBS work.

Properly understood in the context of ZBing, yes.

But cutblock in the context of the NFL rules which is illegal has no place in the game. It's a cheap cop out for someone who got beat

The cut block on Thibodeaux wasn't a cheap shot. It was a textbook cut block. Thibodeaux had his foot stuck in the ground. A cheap shot is the hit Omenihu put on Mills last game. If Mills foot had been firmly planted his knee ligaments would've gotten torn.

A cut block is meant to hit the player front on, above the knee.............NOT from the side, at the knee. The latter was used in both Thibodueax's and Watt's injury plays.

Matt Rhule now states that Darnold will miss at least 4 weeks.......more likely, at least 6 weeks before he would be ready to step into a game.

I high school football you can't block anyone low. I wish they would just get rid of it period. Just block a man high and keep it moving. You can run a zbs without cutting guys at the knees. They say they want a safer game, but they still have cut blocking in the game.

I like the cut block being part of the game. It's been part of the game since the games inception.

If they want a safer game the best way to do this is to put flags on them. They kinda already have with the defenseless receiver rules

Fairburn: Bills’ handling of Matt Araiza undermined trust
By Matthew Fairburn

Content warning: This story contains details about alleged sexual assault. The content may be difficult to read and emotionally upsetting.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Nearly a month after initially learning of rape accusations against rookie punter Matt Araiza, the Bills released him Saturday night. They did so 48 hours after the Los Angeles Times reported on a lawsuit accusing Araiza and two other San Diego State teammates of participating in the gang rape of a then-17-year old girl last October.

How the Bills handled the time in between is what is hard to comprehend.

In a 27-minute joint news conference in the Bills’ fieldhouse Saturday night, Bills GM Brandon Beane and coach Sean McDermott explained the timeline of what they knew and laid out their reasoning for how they handled it. They were left trying to talk their way out of a situation they created by how they handled the accuser’s attorney’s initial message on July 31.

“The Buffalo Bills had no choice but to cut their young punter after so badly botching their response to our claim: they ignored us, as though what I warned them would happen could be avoided if they just kept their heads in the sand,” the accuser’s attorney Dan Gilleon said. “This is what enablers do.”

McDermott said of the accuser’s words, “We did take those very seriously. I want everyone to understand that. That’s a serious deal there.” But he also went on a podcast with Barstool Sports weeks after hearing those accusations and happily referred to Araiza as “The Punt God,” called him a fan favorite and said he is a “great kid.”

The team didn’t take the accusation seriously enough until the suit was filed and the public read about it in the Los Angeles Times or elsewhere. Only then did the Bills release a statement that said they had “conducted a thorough examination” of the incident. That thorough examination did not include following up with the accuser’s attorney after he warned the Bills of the suit.

“We had the boulders of what was being accused,” Beane said. “If any of those boulders, if we were able to piece together were accurate, our decision was simple to move on from Matt. We were using the resources that we had to find any answers that we could. Again, it’s very hard. I don’t know that any more conversations with him would have changed anything because that was those accusations. We were just trying to hear the facts.”

Araiza denied the accusations, and the Bills took the word of a player who already hadn’t been forthright with the organization during the pre-draft process. The accuser’s words didn’t appear to matter to the Bills until everyone had the ability to read them in the civil lawsuit.

Man, I wish they'd bring back clothes line and horse collar tackles. Those had been legal since the beginning of the game. Don't like them, just put flags on them.

I don't have a problem with this. None of these rules happened until God'ell took over. What Gruden said about God'ell was spot on.

How did the NFL ever survive without Godell's leadership, if you want to call what he's done leadership. The game has suffered under his regime. It's not nearly as good to watch as it used to be. I mean every hard hit is a penalty. Trying to regulate football from players getting hurt

It's bad for the game, it's more of a flag fest and theirs no rhythm to the game anymore.

Honestly, mind boggling.... Ever heard of former players killing themselves? How about going insane? You're cool with it, just because them getting their brains bashed in amuses you...? I don't want to hear any "they knew about it" BS.

Why not bring back gladiator games? Those were really popular. Games for real men. Not this BS with helmets, pads, and a toy looking inflated pigskin. Give them swords!!!

The numbers speak for themselves.
During the National Football League’s 2021 season, television and digital ratings increased 10 percent from the previous year, to the highest number in six years. Game broadcasts accounted for 91 of the top 100 most watched programs across TV and digital platforms. Revenue is at an all-time high. The recitation of these types of numbers feels almost perfunctory at this point. They get trotted out during every N.F.L. controversy, whether it is traumatic brain injuries, Colin Kaepernick’s protest and subsequent blackballing or whatever else. The point is always the same: Scandals come and go, but the N.F.L. will always grow.

Do you think the game is better or worse than it used to be?
I think its better because the qb play is better. They're not letting Rod Woodson cat blitz and hit Warren Moon in the head. They're not allowing dline to suplex the qb like wrestling and dislocate his shoulder. You can zone block without cutting a guy at his knees.

Gotta disagree with this post.

The amount of penalties in some games makes it unwatchable.

better
it's just a more exciting game IMO
though i appreciate the '86 Bears, i'd rather watch The Greatest Show On Turf
The greatest show on turf didn't play by the rules that are now in place. It gave teams the ability to build like the NYG/Bears did or like the Rams did. Today's NFL is more like arena football than the NFL I grew up with.

I don't care about this question because to me it's irrelevant when we talk about safety and long term physical and mental health of human beings, but I'm sure it's infinitely better today than it was back in the 20's when the league started.
Aren't you special.

The players know the risk when they play the game. The product isn't what it used to be.

......or allowing receivers to literally be raped by defensive backs as they're running their routes. Dammit Deshaun.....your not a receiver!!!
