NFL Random Thought of the Day

As I previously thought, there had to be more to the story.......you don't normally get intravenous antibiotics via a PICC line after an appendectomy.

Joe Burrow reveals appendix ruptured: “It wasn’t normal appendicitis”
Charean Williams on August 17, 2022, 4:16 PM EDT

At the time, Joe Burrow‘s appendectomy July 26 sounded like a routine procedure. But instead of his appendix being merely inflamed, the quarterback’s appendix had ruptured.

Burrow revealed that Wednesday during his first news conference since the surgery, which came on the day Bengals veterans reported to training camp.

“It wasn’t normal appendicitis that you hear about,” Burrow said, via Ben Baby of ESPN. “I didn’t really feel much. Just getting checked out and had some discomfort, so we thought we’d get it checked out. Turns out I had it. So we had to get it fixed.”

Burrow’s hospital stay resulted in a weight loss, though he declined to reveal how much weight he lost. He watched practices from a medical cart when he returned to camp and finally was cleared to begin throwing two weeks after the procedure.

“You’re in a hospital for however many days and you start to feel like a sick person,” Burrow said. “So you want to get back out with the guys and feel healthy again.”

He took another step in his return Wednesday when he participated in team drills at practice for the first time since the procedure.

Probably not a bad time to review the new NFL rules:

Players now eligible to return from injured reserve after four games; practice squads increased to 16 players

The NFL and NFL Players Association recently agreed upon new rules for the 2022 season, notably pertaining to injured reserve and players having to miss a minimum of four games before they can return, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported Wednesday evening.

Players designated for return from the reserve/injured or reserve/non-football injury/illness list are eligible to come back after "four games have elapsed since the date he was placed on the applicable reserve list," per the memo obtained by Garafolo. Previously, players were eligible to return after three games missed.

In addition to changes to injured reserve rules, the NFL and NFLPA recently agreed to changes for the ramp-up period for training camp and changes to practice squads, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported.

In another alteration to injured reserve protocol, teams will now have eight players permitted to return from IR and/or the reserve/non-football injury/illness list to the 53-man active roster or the practice squad, per season. An individual player can return from IR a maximum of twice per season, but each time counts against the team's allotted eight designations.

Among the changes for practice squads are that they are now permitted to have 16 players, which is up from the previous 14-player squad size.

Teams can now elevate individual players from the practice squad to the game-day roster a maximum of three times per season, rather than two, which was the previous max.

The NFL and NFLPA also amended details for ramp-up periods during preseason training camps. On-field sessions that were not allowed to be longer than two hours have now been limited to 90 minutes on Day 2, 105 minutes on Day 3 and remained at two hours on the final two days.

PS to 16 players......finally one of a few moves I really like. Still want to see 53 men active on the sideline each and every game.

Tend to agree with 53 on the sidelines.
Why force teams to pare their rosters down to 53 if you can't access them all on GameDay?
Due to injuries, not all teams would be able to dress the full roster. Thereby giving the team that can dress the most an unfair advantage.

Witnesses: Aqib Talib Started Fight That Led to Fatal Shooting

Witnesses claim former NFL cornerback Aqib Talib started the altercation at a youth football game in Lancaster, Texas, which ended with a fatal shooting Saturday, according to Dallas television station WFAA.

Talib’s older brother, Yaqub Talib, who is a suspect in the shooting of Mike Hickmon, turned himself in to authorities Monday. In a video obtained by the television station, witnesses say Aqib, wearing a hat and white sneakers, walked across the field and started a brawl because he was upset about the officiating during the game.

“He ran across the field and ran over on our sideline and got in the ref’s face,” coach Heith Mayes told the TV station.
According to WFAA, the arrest affidavit says the confrontation started over an argument about the score of the game, but it doesn’t say who started the fight.

“He threw the first punch, and you see Mike trying to defend himself,” Mayes continued.

In an initial video obtained by TMZ Sports, several coaches and referees can be seen arguing when things turned violent and a gun was pulled. After Yaqub turned himself in, Aqib’s lawyer released a statement Tuesday.

“Aqib was present when this unfortunate incident occurred and is very distraught and devastated over this terrible loss of life,” the lawyer told TMZ Sports. “He would like to convey his condolences to the family of the victim and to everyone who witnessed this unfortunate tragedy.”

Witnesses told ESPN that Yaqub was seen taking out a gun and shooting Hickmon multiple times. Witnesses also allege the shooting happened in front of several children, including Hickmon’s 9-year-old son.

Yeah hugely talented guy that has a screw loose.

Drew Lock Lock has tested COVID positive and is reported "really sick" by the team. He is fully vaccinated. Last November, Lock also tested positive after being fully vaccinated. This is actually the third time Lock has had to miss a game because of COVID-19 protocols [after being fully vaccinated. In week 12 2020, Broncos backup QB Jeff Driskel tested positive and the rest of the team's QB's were all deemed close contacts, making Denver's entire QB depth chart unavailable for a game.

Ex-Commanders trainer Ryan Vermillion reaches deal with prosecutors in opioid distribution case
Tom Schad
USA TODAY

Former Washington Commanders athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion reached a deal with prosecutors Friday to avoid criminal charges for illegally distributing opioids to players.

According to court records filed in the case, Vermillion acknowledged storing and distributing drugs like oxycodone to Commanders players, often by retaining leftover pills from one player's legitimate prescription and later giving them to another in "pill envelopes."

He also asked team doctors to write prescriptions "to cover for the fact that he had provided controlled substances to players without a legitimate prescription," according to a statement of facts filed in the case.

Vermillion will avoid charges in the case as long as he meets the terms of a deferred prosecution agreement, which will essentially place him under probation for the next calendar year.

He was also suspended indefinitely Friday by the NFL and fired by the Commanders, who had placed him on administrative leave last year after becoming aware of the investigation.

"The situation is unfortunate and although it resulted in no criminal charges, it was necessary to move forward in a different direction," Commanders head coach Ron Rivera said in a statement.

Kenny Pickett
1 carry for -4yds

isn't that called a sack?
didn't see the play

if a qb keeps the ball in rpo, isn;t it still considered a sack behind the los?
My understanding if the quarterback gets out of what's called The Tackle Box it is no longer a sack but just a tackle as long as it's behind the line of scrimmage

Panthers are a team that I could see Garoppolo going to. They could handle his cap hit this season but they are in a huge hole for 2023 and would have to do some Financial juggling to work him in.
Panthers?

they’re trying to save Sam Darnold’s career. They just traded for Baker Mayfield. They drafted Matt Corral.

I think they have enough irons in the fire.

Not surprising from another Quincy Avery "coached-up" QB.

Malik Willis focuses on staying in the pocket in second preseason game
Posted by Michael David Smith on August 21, 2022, 7:21 AM EDT

In the Titans’ first preseason game, coach Mike Vrabel benched rookie quarterback Malik Willis for taking off and running when Vrabel wanted him to stay in the pocket and pass. Willis says he learned his lesson.

In the Titans’ second preseason game on Saturday night, Willis’s passing numbers weren’t great: 7-for-17 for 80 yards, with one touchdown, no interceptions and three sacks. And he did take off and run five times, gaining 42 yards on the ground. But he said afterward that he felt good about his pocket presence.

“I felt a little bit more comfortable,” Willis said. “But it’s not about feeling comfortable. It’s about making it a big point to stay in the pocket when I can. And not just because I’m athletic or I can get out when I want to, just to get out sometimes. And it is understanding when not to. And that’s the biggest thing. That’s why I’m a little disappointed in myself for, I think I got out a little bit too much. But it’s a growing process. It’s my second preseason game. I’m not going to be too hard on myself in that regard. So, I’m just excited and blessed that I get opportunity next week.”

Willis’s accuracy hasn’t been great, but he said after the game that Vrabel is telling him not to worry about it and just to keep throwing the ball.

The Bucs' Brady OL are going down. First, C Jensen. Now, LG Aaron Stinnie was carted off during the Titans game. Looking at video, it appears that he at least suffered an MCL rupture with possible ACL. Will be awaiting MRI for definitive diagnosis.

Not surprising from another Quincy Avery "coached-up" QB.

I like Vrabel. Good coach

None of those are as good as Garoppolo. Baker is not the future. His contract and Arnold's is over after this season. $24 m to use now for Garoppolo. I'd rather he work with Corral than Darnold.

The Bucs RT Tristan Wirfs sustaiined an "abdominal" injury 3 days ago. The injury has now been identified as an abdominal oblique muscle strain. The Bucs are not saying when he might return. From what I can discern, it is a grade II. Even a grade I requires 3 weeks rest. A grade II usually will require ~ 5-6 weeks. If it does end up a grade III, Wirfs can expect a 3 month vacation.

This injury in a RT would be most expected to occur in the left oblique, as he would commonly try to twist his body to the left as he would try to contain his opponent inside. Most studies with this injury have been in baseball players ( usually pitchers and fielders). But what makes this more significant in a an NFL lineman is the fact that baseball players would not typically twist with any resistance.............an NFL lineman would incur this injury while usually twisting against heavy (sometimes 200-300 lb) resistance. Baseball players have been shown to re-injure in ~20% of the cases within 3 years. Taking into account the resistance factor, I would expected the recurrence rate in an NFL lineman to be signficantly higher over a much shorter period of time.

My understanding if the quarterback gets out of what's called The Tackle Box it is no longer a sack but just a tackle as long as it's behind the line of scrimmage
The only significance of the Tackle Box as I understand it is that when the QB is standing within this area with the ball, he must throw the ball towards an area that is occupied by an eligible receiver, otherwise he will be penalized for intentional grounding. Outside the Tackle Box, the QB can throw it away without penalty.

I believe that USFL MVP KaVontae Turpin is a great addition for the Cowboy’s. I wasn’t prepared to be excited watching a preseason game.
Expect more solid additions to the NFL from the USFL and XFL in the coming seasons. This seasons USFL will not see a lot of them due to the way the season got started but I fully expect to see other players becoming nice additions to NFL teams soon enough.
