Texans Wide Receivers

Toro Bravo

Rookie
With the unfortunate illness of John Metchie and the injury and release of DaeSean Hamilton we are left with Brandon Cooks and a bunch of JAG's at the wide receiver position going into 2022 training camp. I'm hoping that Nick is able to find a playmaker without giving up too much draft capital and cap space either via trade or after the cuts. I don't see a lot on the free agent market but if we are really going to see what Davis Mills has, he is going to need some help and I don't have much faith in the current wide receiver group as a whole - I've never heard of some of these guys:

How do y'all think we should address the wide receiver position?

Pretty sad sack group. Cooks is prolific but does he really scare anyone? Borderline. I think he's better suited as the #2 on a good team.

The only other guy is Collins. I see him improving and becoming a dependable target, but again, does he worry a defense. Nope.

The other guys are terrible in general. Dorsett has never lived up to his billing, but we'll see. He could turn into something. The others? Meh at best.

The only guy you can bring in that is any possible difference maker is Will Fuller. At least he'll take the top off the D - until he gets a hangnail that is.

There are at least 5 known (could be very good) guys there and 31 other teams still have lots of guys to cut and practice squads to steal from

Who are the 5 known?? I see 3 good ones and one thats so-so (conley) and needs def work...the others are all unknowns. Collins, Cook, Dorsett and Conley....this group will miss Metchie and the organization def needs to be on the lookout for some talent to add to this group if Mills is to succeed.

Chris Moore looked good in his limited opportunities last year

I think we can get away with what we have IF and only IF our TE's step up and contribute. Big question mark will be if Oline can hold up and allow us to actually utilize our TE's the way they were intended to be used...Brevin Jordan will be a huge question mark and I hope he can continue to improve

All they need is a miracle.
Who are the 5 known??
There's one guy who is a top 25 WR (Cooks).
A 2nd year guy with all the tools (Collins) that needs to make a big step forward.
Three age 29 WRs (Conley, Moore, Dorsett) with a collective 19 years in the league who've never put it together.
5 guys I would have never heard of if they weren't on the Texans roster.

This has to be the worst WR group since...the 2021 Texans WRs group.

Still, they're better than the TE group. Horrific.

Remember, the passing game is supposed to be the strength of the offense because of the moribund rushing attack. How is this not going to be the worst offense in league for the 2nd consecutive season?

My guess….no.

I agree and like I said - it's a sad sack group. Even with Metchie, this group was not even an average group. They need to invest in a real WR next year, not trading up for some injured guy that doesn't have the skill set for playing outside and who was a 3rd/4th rounder to begin with. No, I'm still not over that draft blunder.

Well, I’ve heard we’re deep at WR, so there’s that.

Can't miss something you never had

IMO, Cole Beasley would fit in perfectly with this group. Veteran leadership who leads by example - this years Danny Amendola. I think he could be a 50 catch 550 yard receiver this year. And a third down machine.
Agreed
I’m a huge no on Beasley. I like guys with a brain. And he is a selfish me first guy without a brain.

Since my last post which many people agree with was deleted, I'm going to address the post instead of the poster,

Shocking this post was made. Not, of you disagree with posts like this one you get posts like this. SMDH

BTW, the NFL obviously disagrees with posts like this because they've done away with Covid protocols.

Is this good enough at addressing a rather dumb post.

Agreed

Over zealous moderation

There's a particular mod that has a case of the red azz when it comes to my posts.

It is what it is, I'm hoping other mods take note and do something about this situation. I won't hold my breath.

Why don't you become a mod? I have no idea what the criteria is for the position.

Can't miss something you never had
Sure you can. When you draft someone to join your team b/c of their hands, speed, and knack for creating separation and have high hopes and look forward to his contribution to the team and then all of sudden he cant play b/c of medical issue....of course you can miss it...or else you would have never traded up in the draft to acquire those skills.

Yep, it's a kick in the balls for Mills development.

Nobody even knows if he was even going to play this season. If he was ,it was going to be on the back end. Its not like they were counting on a 2nd rd injured rookie to make big contributions.

Well, we do have 2 firsts and a high 2nd plus 2 thirds next draft...
We absolutely must give Mills a decent shot at proving himself and a proven NFL talent is worth more than a rookie who might turn into a Phillip Dorset.

If there's another offense worse. It won't be because the Texans brass has put together a capable squad, or that they have a quarterback that is so good he will elevate other players around him.

If there's one bright spot to be found it's that the Texans should be (fingers crossed) one year closer to not sucking anymore.

We obviously have differing opinions and you are obviously not a Metchie fan and blatantly biased...so we'll just leave it at that.
Cant wait for him to recover and come back and prove you wrong.

They need to add quality vets on the offensive side of the ball in fa next off season.

I agree that the Texans need to supplement their draft choices next year. But sign younger guys coming off their rookie contracts. Not 30 somethings trying to hang on for another season.
Eh... sign players who can play. Manage our commitment to those players who can play with "smart", "prudent" contracts.

Don't sign Aman Green for $5M/yr for three years. Guy couldn't play, the money was not smart, the term not prudent

This isn't the year for this.

This is the year to give Mills his best chance to succeed. Next off-season when they will have cap space is the year to spend.

Do you think adding a young wr that's been cut by another team will help Mills succeed more than a guy like Beasley on a one yr deal? I don't. It seems like you're trying to do things to make sure Mills doesn't succeed. I can't remember were you one of the guys that didn't like the Mills pick? This would explain a lot of things.

Since I don't think Beasley has anything left, the question is moot.

He had 65 catches last year and has been Allen's safety valve for yrs. His production fell a bit in ypc as Allen has grown as a QB. I would like for Mills to have the same opportunity. Do you actually think bringing in a young unproven guy that's been cut from another team is going to help Mills development. BTW, I'm not against waiting until the end of camp to see what vet slot WR might be available before bringing in another guy like they did with Amendola last year. Be it Beasley or somebody else, Scotty Miller comes to mind.

Although waiting doesn't allow for Mills and the new guy to develop the chemistry I would like them to have. Also did you notice how much better the offense seemed to run when Amendola was there for Mills to throw too?

Whatever you say. Not getting into a conversation with your pretzel logic.
What pretzel logic. It's very logical to try to bring in the best players possible to try to give Mills his best chance to succeed. Anything else would seem illogical to me.

I would say you're trying to avoid answering this but I have a feeling it would just get my post deleted if I typed my true feelings about people who answer posts like you answered this post. Or worse. Posts like this are a cowards way out.

Stuff about Beasley and Amendola.

1. Beasley averaged 8.5 ypc catch in 2021. Less than half of his receptions were for 1st downs.
2. Beasley broke zero.zero tackles in 2021. He dropped 5 passes.
3. Passes to Beasley resulted in an 80.7 passer rating. Throwing to Beasley turned a Pro Bowl QB into a mediocre passer.
4. The Bills did not ask Beasley to come back in 2022. What a shocker!

Remember when you told me that O'Brien made a good deal bringing in a shot David Johnson? Johnson was a pro bowl RB in 2016, so he could get back to that level, you said. You're doing it again. I actually think Beasley might be a lot like Amendola. Have a couple of decent games, then either be invisible or injured the other 15. Ridiculous.

So because I disagree with your weak take that Beasley would help Mills or this team, I hate Mills? That's what you said. And that is a alarmingly stupid post. So okay, I will no longer be a coward and tell you straight up that it was the dumbest post I've read since...one of your other posts.

He actually had: 82 catches 693 yards 8.4 average and 1 touchdown.

I would love to see the Texans sign Beasley to a 1 year deal. Then have Metchie in next season.

Just trying to think through this.

As it stands we have Chris Moore most likely to play the role Beasley would play. Not thinking long term or money or anything other than Sundays in the regular season which of those two would you rather have on the field?

Chris Moore is the norm. Texans normally have a guy like that playing that role. He’s either consistently blah… or like Keke, he’ll be very inconsistent with a good game or two & mostly non-existent for the others resulting in a very blah season.

I like that Beasley had 82 catches for them & half of them (about) were for 1st downs.

I understand a team with one of the better rosters didn’t bring him back. But we don’t have one of the better rosters in the league.

I think the Texans can & most likely will do worse than Cole Beasley.

Emmanuel Sanders: 2021 stats
42 rec, 626 yards, 14.9 per catch 4 TD

Or Beasley. 82 catches 693 yards 8.4 average and 1 touchdown.

Who would you guys prefer?

Cole Beasley is done in the NFL. NFL doesn't like selfish players...that don't play at Star level. He is not worth having a potential COVID spreader around.

You're assuming the Texans won't find anyone better on the waiver wire, but:

Cole Beasley is available to every team in the league. Every team prefers what they have now to Beasley. There will be injuries in camps and preseason games. There will be WRs that don't work out as hoped. But as of today, every team has said "Nah,we're good" to Beasley. Unless Beasley starts at slot, he can't get on the field because he no longer has special teams ability.

I don't know why Moore hasn't gotten an opportunity to start. Moore was very efficient last year in limited chances. 21 receptions in 22 targets. I'm not there for every practice, every film session. It seem like the guy should get a shot. But there may be something I don't know about.

65 catches is nothing to sneeze at. Yes, Beasley is a sure handed slot guy. I don't care what pff says. I don't put much stock in their ratings.

But hey let's bring in somebody off of the Jags practice squad. That should help Mills out alot. Like I said I'm good with waiting until the end of camp to see who else is out there. In fact if there's somebody who Caserio really likes I'm good with trading a late rd pick to make sure he gets the guy he wants. Another philosophy which we disagree on and that's fine by me. Disagreeing is what keeps this MB interesting.

I thought DJ was worth taking a shot on, I was wrong and although I didn't want DJ brought back last yr, I understood the logic behind the move.

Like I said before, you didn't like the Caserio hire or the Mills pick. So it stands to reason you wouldn't be for putting the best weapons possible around him.

I will tell you the slot guy I would bring in from the USFL, Turpin, that guys a threat to score every time he touches the ball. The McNair's will never let that happen though.
