Texans random thought of the day

Texazan

Our HOF 34
Damien Pearce has infectious enthusiasm.
He's going to be easy to root for. He has a great personality and one well suited for a running back imo.

In the video it was mentioned by one of the draftees that the Texans were bringing in high energy guys. That might factor into why some players were selected instead of others that some of us wanted or predicted to be drafted
Yea he sounds like a very likeable kid. Look forward to him blowing up some defenders on Sunday

This is just another case (of which there are many in the NFL) where what you think will happen is different from what you hope will happen.

If the guy does pan out and manages to show up and play like he can, we'll have one damn fine secondary, which I'm not sure the Texans have ever had. LOL

I hope everyone is lowering their expectations for this season - the majority of experts are still unconvinced about the Texans chances and I tend to agree.
I am an optimist though, and still harbour hopes that our guys can have more success than current experts projections.
I have my reasons for these hopes:-
I think Mills will continue to improve.
Last season on a mediocre team he showed progress. This coming season he will get some help on both sides of the ball including a better run game. I would feel better with a proven performer at TE, but baby steps as Texans are not going to go from the outhouse to the Penthouse in the middle of a rebuild.
But if it can happen that we have a surprise jump a la Bengals, it would most likely be due to excellent QB play and coaching will be key to that happening.
I expect improvement at the HC level with Lovie now in full control.
I am expecting improvement on Offence under Pep Hamilton.
I expect improvement on the Oline with a new Oline coach and a shiny new quality rookie at G.
I expect improvement in the run game with a new young bull in the stable.
I expect improvement on Defense with a nice injection of talent.
To temper all the potential is the fact that this is nearly all new, including adjustment time for the rooks plus the inevitable injuries so I expect some time for the whole to gel.
Texans best football should become more evident in the second half of the season.

I had no hope for last season, until the Titans & the Colts came out the gate stumbling. Then I started hoping against hope when Tyrod Taylor was looking like Steve Young.

My optimism lasted a week and a half.

I'm not expecting much from this season. Unless the Colts & Titans struggle. I expect the Jags are in the same position as we are.

I expect us to be in 3rd place this season and the Jags in 4th. I trust the Jags to do the right thing even less than the Texans. LOL

But still, there's no reason that we can't expect an improvement on a 4 win season with the players they have now. And the coaching staff.

I don't think anyone has really high expectations for the this season as far as wins go. I think most are just optimistic about the quality of play and coaching being better. The rookies and new acquisitions are going to need some time to merge with the rest of the team into a cohesive unit. We still have holes that we need to address next draft, or by picking up players off of the waiver wire after other teams start making their cuts. We still need to find a Center, and another starting G for the offense, and a few more DBs for the defense. We'll most likely need some LB upgrades also, but I think what we have now are serviceable. We'll have to wait and see how the new additions to the DL pan out. We may be good there, but upgrades are always good.

So, saying all of that, I don't expect the Texans to win many more games than they did last season. I predict 4 to 6 wins, but would be very pleased with more. Mostly, I just want the Texans to be competitive in every game.

It's great to see the greatest Texan, AJ, part of the welcoming committee. That's pretty cool for rookies to even brush with greatness as they walk through the door for the first time.

I think the Titans fall this season. Tannehill is shell-shocked from his playoff loss (and local media is being brutal with him) and he's going to be looking over his shoulder with a rookie QB (who fans and media are already starting to clamor for). Then add the loss of AJ Brown and I don't think the Titans offense is going to be a consistent threat. Scratch the surface and that franchise still has Oilers curse in its veins. lol

I do expect the Colts to win the AFC South, but I would not be shocked if the Texans compete for a 7-8 win season under Lovie.

I think the division is where we can scratch out the most wins.
I can see Titans relying heavily on Henry and eventually that will tell.
What really needs to happen is for our team to be ready to take advantage of any opponents stumbling.
Colts may be the bugbear.

They are in such a good place now. Being forced to trade Derrick was the best thing that could have ever happened to this franchise.
They held their stock (Watson) for too long. Had they immediately put Watson on the market before giving him his new contract….the return would’ve been better.

During Watson’s tenure, the team was “never” a player or two away. They were a complete FO and Coaching Staff away.

So, I didn’t view the re-signing of Watson, Watt, or Hopkins as solid moves since they couldn’t put a team around them. For me, the best move would’ve been to clear the table, fire the FO / Coaching Staff, load up on the picks those 3 players would’ve brought back in return, and then hand it over to a new regime.

I would've fired BOB and put Derrick up for trade after 51-7. Washing away the losers. I've already seen this in the House of Pain yrs.

Done and moving on, bad leadership..

Your cherry picking history here. No indication Watson would sit out prior to the contract.
Go back and read my prior post. This is not cherry picking. I mentioned on multiple occasions that even though I liked Watson….and Hopkins, the Texans had failed to build a competitive team around them.

The Texans just had too many holes, a horrible coaching staff, and FO to expect AFCCG or SB results. Acknowledging this made it easier to come to the conclusion that trading the top talent before handing out new contracts was the way to go. Texans had far too many holes to justify tying up that much cap space in a few players.

Man if Watson wasn’t a chump and didn’t pull that bull crap. You don’t trade away your franchise quarterback going into his prime. Come on gentlemen let’s be real around here. You continue to build around your franchise quarterback. What if the Colts had that type of mentality when they had a young Manning. They had a lot of holes with him earlier on too.

The Calhoun's are in a much better place without Derrick than with him

Look at the W-L and having to pay him 156 mil.

The failures of this organization during Watson’s tenure was not Deshaun or Hopkins fault. The team made really bad contract decisions on players and executed really poor drafts….which helped sink them into the abyss talent and cap wise. But, further strapping this team with the necessary contracts to retain Watson, Hopkins, and JJ would’ve (and did) sink this team from a financial standpoint.

My initial thoughts were to give Watson, Hopkins, and Watt a chance at success before the Texans burned up their careers as they had done other players in their brief history. OB was the issue and needed to be shown the door before he got to put his final touch on setting this team back for 3-5 years.

Let’s just hope that Caserio and Lovie have the touch that finally establish an environment of success for the team and players.

The top talent is one who made the decision to go. For all the reasons you explained. "Somethings never change".

3rd most cap space…

That can’t be right. I’m pretty sure Nick has fumbled the Texans cap management & I’ll continue arguing he’s doing a crappy job for it.

This is what I was trying to tell posters when I said it was going to take a couple of yrs to cleanup the mess GM BOB left behind. Getting Derrick/Cunningham/Mercilus off of the books was always going to take a couple of yrs.

Texans almost traded for

Sounded nice but this aint Madden and we can’t make players want to sign. Dang that CB room would’ve rivaled any other team’s in the league though!

Dan Duggan of TheAthletic.come reports that the Giants had agreed to trade Bradberry to Houston for a late-round pick, but that idea got scrapped when the Texans and Bradberry could not agree on contract terms. Bradberry is in the final year of his current deal and an extension would lessen the cap hit the Giants were trying to avoid, but Bradberry was not interested in an extended stay in Houston.

But you could have made him play out and prove his worth with the 5th year option, then franchise him if there was still a question. Then again, that probably wouldn't have changed the extracurricular activities and what it brought.

I'd have to say, regardless of anyone's draft grade, overall the team has been upgraded quite a bit from last season.
In fact, it is simpler to name the areas that haven't been upgraded than the ones that have.
And that's from the HC down.

What hasn't been upgraded:

Defensive Coordinator
Quarterbacks
Arguably Tight Ends, although players were added.

I don't think it's arguable that the following have been upgraded:

Head Coach
Offensive Coordinator
OLine Coach
Offensive Line
Running Backs
Wide Receivers
Defensive Line
Linebackers
Cornerbacks
Safeties

I'm not predicting a miraculous improvement.
But I am saying that this team is clearly moving in a positive direction.
To the consternation of some of you I'm sure, unfortunately

Upgrading and addressing are 2 different things. By your definition they "upgraded" the RB room last year bringing in Ingram, Lindsay and Burkhead. We saw how that worked out.

They've addressed several areas, it's yet to be determined if they are indeed upgrades.

That didn’t work out because of the offensive line being so terrible again. You could’ve had an elite back and more and likely gotten the same results.

No, that's more equivalent to the changes they've made to the TE group this year.

Changed, yes. Upgraded, no.
