Davis Mills is a poor man's...

Hall of Fame
This morning's Chronicle expanded on this stat. First, the negative. Mills ranked 27th among QB's with only 42 total passes of 20+ yards. This was all on Culley's offense and insistance on running the ball first.

Now to break down the good news, of those 42 passes, he completed 20, for 643 yds, 6 TD's and only one INT.

In yesterday's presser, Mills said he's already seen part of the new playbook, and it will be a scheme that takes "advantage of big plays and vertical routes down the field".

Maybe it's drinking kool-aid, but I believe we can be a little excited with our expectations. Whether it will be a sucess is up in the air, but maybe we are finally going to see the change we've all wanted.

Pep is off Harbaugh/Shaw tree. Its a west coast offense for the most part. Honestly, when he had Luck, some of his protections got Luck beat up, but some of it was Luck the playmaker also. It has to be better than the Godsey,BOB,Kelly bs we witnessed

I'm not sure if this is a feel good stat and to set expectations for Mills or a reminder of the Texans history of below average QB play or to take it with a grain of salt because a previous rookie QB got hurt on his way to easily surpassing those numbers or a combination of all these reminders.

All of the above

The B!tch of it is, if the poor kids doesn't have a career year, I guess the team writes him off and picks a QB high in next years draft. Hell, Josh Allen didn't have his breakout year till his 3rd year, and look at him now!

Edit: I'd like to see him improve condusive to the talent we can add around him, and to the team. For the game to slow down around him as he learns to be an NFL QB. Play cool, calm and collected mistake free football. I can see him developing over time into a Joe Montana (dare I say?) type of QB. Wouldn't that be a jackpot!
But most importantly becoming the leader of this team, who was here from the beginning, as a cornerstone of the rebuild, and grew with the team.
I don't think it's fair to ask of him to see his best within 2 years of us drafting him. Not everyone is a Mahomes. There are plenty of Phil Simms, Drew Brees, Troy Aikman, Josh Allens that took 3 years +...Aaron Rogers never had his breakout until his 2nd year playing, but that was after watching Favre for the 1st 3 years.

You are not going to find a better QB in this draft unless you use a 1st rounder. Maybe not even then.
If their goal was to give Mills some competition then they'd probably take another QB in the 3rd, I don't think they'll spend a 1 or 2 on a QB this draft. If they did, I'd have to call that a bad move. We'll be finding out in a few weeks. We finally have a draft coming up that will have some real drama. LOL

I'd rather they not draft a QB at all in this draft.

But if I have to chose between a 4th rd QB or Jeff Driskel, I'd go with that 4th rd QB (or 5th, or 6th, or 7th, or UDFA).

If Mills doesn't break out this year, people will be calling for his head. 🙄

What’s considered “break out”?

remember the team around him will only be marginally better. 7 wins is probably on the high side
With some of the key players on offense and coaches returning to play together for their second year, plus one or two really bright draft picks that start and make a difference, I think 7 wins is very realistic. If they only win four again then something went wrong.

If they win more than 7, then we'll know we might be onto something.

I'm thinking breakout territory should be around 9 wins.
That should get most of the fans buzzing.
May as well be Tannehill.

I mean if we manage to draft two guards & a RB in the first round, as long as Davis doesn’t throw the game away. It’s possible he could regress & still win 9 games

I would rather have Hutchinson, Walker and then Sauce. A great edge is as good as a DB. See JJ and him cause enough problems for an offensive they didn't get a QB going
I will be happy either way. I just want a difference maker. I just hope difference makers are drafted. Remember when people didn't like the Watt pick because it wasn't a positional need. LOL. Just draft great players. One guy I would consider trading up to say 10 for is Jermaine Johnson. This guy is a difference maker

Jesus. Can we put a team around him first? Right now they aren't any better than they were last year. You almost have to improve talent wise with all the draft picks they have, but that's still wait and see. And the Texans had a QB 2 years ago who led the NFL in passing yards and still only won 4 games. So even if Mills had a breakout year statistically, that still may not translate to wins. The talent throughout this team has to get better for that to happen.

I think we are all assuming the team will be improved.

Johnson is very good. But, due to teams grabbing QBs in the 1st (always happens) even if they grade 3rd round. I think a guy like Johnson will be around in the 20s perhaps. That's a sample of why I think Nick trades 13 for more picks. 13 turns to 22 say, grab Johnson and still have a 2nd and 3rd round pick from trading 13

We know that but dang can some fans express their optimism without you spoiling it.

Understood, but you also have FA, new HC and other coaching staff.
Not forgetting Bengals went from 4 wins to the SB in one offseason so why is 5 more wins so unrealistic?
I’d just like them to address the offense, overall. I don’t care how, but just get weapons and get the offense to where they can play with anyone. And I’m not advocating to forget the defense either.

Because they already had guys like Mixon/Uzomah/Higgins/Boyd/ Jonah Williams in place before drafting Chase.

Who on the Texans has the ability of these play makers, besides maybe Cooks?

Yep, Caserio could even use the 1st couple of picks on the defense.

With a bit of luck, our draftees will be nice upgrades and help the team become competitive.

So what would you need to see from Davis Mills to name him the Texans franchise QB?

Agreed, check out the mock that I just posted. I wouldn't count on these guys to be on par with the Bengals play makers as rookies. They would be an upgrade over what Mills had to work with last yr.

Well Collins and Jordan should take a jump. And if we could get a stud back in Peps ( not O’Brien scheme) anything could happen.
