2022 draft eligible QBs - General Discussion

posted in the other QB thread also
The kid is remarkable, not only does he inspire and lead, but he also does whatever it is he needs to do to try and win the football game. If I were a GM as much as I love the kid, I would pass on drafting Corral because of the injury issues. I think he has a couple of previous knee injuries to go with his high ankle sprain. Lucky it was not a compound fracture. IMO these injuries will only become worse and more frequent because of the way he plays. I wish him the best of luck and do look forward to watching him play on Sunday's. Will his new team put the brakes on him, and will he be as effective if they do? IMO, I think Ole Miss wins the game if he doesn't get hurt.

I'm thinking if Payton doesn't get a chance to pick Pickett, that Corral will be the pick.

What value would you Guys assign to a premium career back-up QB (showcases excellent leadership and aptitude for position, but limited due to injury concerns)?

I’d like to see the Texans kick the tires on Marcus Mariota and/or Josh Rosen. Either option would be affordable and could easily serve as insurance for Mills.

Heels OG off to pros; QB to star game … There were a couple of bits of news out of North Carolina over the past 24 hours. OG Josh Ezeudu, for example, announced that he will be entering the 2022 draft. He’s a 6-4, 325-pound 4th year junior who figures to be a mid-to-late third-day pick. Meanwhile, QB Sam Howell has confirmed that he has accepted an invitation to participate in next month’s Senior Bowl in Mobile. He’s eligible as a 4th year junior who has graduated. Howell joins an already impressive QB roster at the Senior Bowl which also includes Pitt’s Kenny Pickett, Malik Willis of Liberty, Cincinnati’s Desmond Ridder, Carson Strong of Nevada and Western Kentucky’s Bailey Zappe. What that means, assuming everyone who has committed actually shows up in Mobile, is that other than Matt Corral of Mississippi, all the QBs with first-round potential for the 2022 draft will be in Mobile next month. And speaking of Corral, who suffered what looked like a potentially serious leg injury in Saturday’s Sugar Bowl, we’re now at Wednesday and there has been no announcement, or even rumors, about the extent of the injury, which suggests that maybe it is not that serious as we would have likely heard something by now if it was. We’ll stay on it though.

When the scouts see the ball come out of Willis hand, he's going to move up a round. Especially a team that has a older vet or wants competition with a young guy.

Scouts have been watching this kid for a couple of years. They may already have him a round higher than the media

True. In Kipers 1st mock, he went to Falcons in the 1st rd. Posters always speak of a weak qb class, but every year we see guys qbs get drafted high 1st rd who some thought were 2nd rd picks. Especially guys from small schools. Willis has by far the best arm in the draft. The ball explodes out his hand and he can throw from different angles and platforms. He needs seasoning because at times he just relies on his arm and not his fundamentals.

….until GM’s see that defensive backs were also very successful at seeing the ball come out of Willis’ hand as well. He was moderately successful at Liberty while being a wash out at Auburn. I think selecting Willis any sooner than RD4 is going to be eyebrow raising.

Joe Flacco didn't play at Pitt and went to Delaware . Josh Allen is the case study. I'm sure nobody was overwhelmed by him after his Jr year, but he went 6th. Its about skill level and attributes. Thats not to say every qb will make that ascension, but teams roll the dice on qbs in the 1st rd because they get that 5 ft year

That’s b/c Allen had a very good or coming out party in his 2016 Sophomore season at Wyoming. Bought him some lead way for his 2017 season.

Josh Allen's trajectory has been amazing. The tools were always there. His growth after Ken Dorsey showed up is noteworthy. Dorsey's work with Allen, and Cam Newton before that, should put teams on notice.

But he did have a trash Jr year. Willis did have a better 1st year at Liberty vs 2nd yr. Either way, nobody expected him to be that high of a pick regardless. Its the physical tools thats attractive just like Wilson and Lance from last season.

I've got him as my #44 prospect.

Middle of the 2nd rd is about right for such a raw prospect.

He certainly needs to improve on reducing turnovers and improve his accuracy and anticipation. He's got a big arm though and is worth taking the time to try to develop. However I wouldn't count on him becoming a franchise QB.

Heck, maybe Dorsey can become the next HC of the Texans.

You know how the qb game works. You're looking for top flight talent or a brain like Peyton. Allen threw for under 2000 yds, 16 and 6 as a Jr. Willis threw for 27 and 12 and almost 3000 yds last yr. All I'm saying is his arm talent is better than anyone in this draft by far. If you watch that video break down by O'Sullivan, he points out some of his flaws of pocket drifting and setup. His release and his ability to threaten every blade of grass on the field exceeds all of the qbs coming out and all the guys last year except Lawrence, Wilson, and Lance. Good qb coaching can clean that up, but from a sheer talent point and throwing the football with power and touch, he has it. The added bonus is his legs too. You have him at 44, but he's probably going to be mid 1st rd after the senior bowl practices.

I would argue Strong has the best arm in this draft.

I think his status moves when he gets to show off in shorts and a t-shirt. A little more difficult to see him putting on a RD1 or RD2 clinic against the Senior Bowl talent.

Just heard on 610 that, following his combine performance, Malik Willis is shooting up boards and is now being looked at as a top 5 pick, with the Panthers looking at him with the Texans #3 pick.

Said Malik Willis' agent.

BTW, the Panthers don't have a 2nd or 3rd round pick to trade with.

Actually, I mis-wrote. The radio talk was about Willis rising up the charts and being considered a top 5 by some clubs, with the Panthers having him at #3 on their board, not that they were pursuing a trade with the Texans. I heard no explanation from where this info may have come. Obviously, would have had to be someone familiar with the Panthers' war room.

I'm going with Pickett at no. 13

This is the last of a 5-pt series.

This is Pickett as a true freshman vs. Unbeaten 10-0 Miami (2nd ranked) while Pitts was 4-7.

This was his Pro Day.

Would have liked a bigger hand size, but heck, he played at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, so the concern is lessen.

The Panthers haven't had much talent on the offensive side the last few years.

They were predicted to be in the lower half of their conference every year.

I think people are underselling Pickett. He's older, but he can play and is more athletic than people give him credit for.

I hope a bidding war starts

Do you like Pickett more than Willis?
There's not much game tape on Willis to properly judge him.
He runs around a bit too much at that level of competition.
If you don't like Watson's style of play, how can you want him as your QB?

With Pickett, there's plenty of tapes where you can view the whole field so you can tell what/how he saw/read the defense.
If you like Peterman, why wouldn't you want Pickett as your QB?

I didn't like Peterman as a franchise QB and I like Mills more than Pickett as a potential franchise QB.
