Brandin Cooks to the Texans

I don't know man. Maybe NC has joined this board and just loves pissing Texian off and reading his rants. He's far and away the most vocal and passionate critic he has and I think he likes Texian's attention. :smooch:
The Brigade thinks that just because there is going to be a lot more salary cap room that this is going to be the cure that will keep Nick Caserio from making bad management decisions in the future and stop Jack Easterby from writing terrible player contracts. Boy do they have a rude awakening coming and some really nasty Kool Aid to drink.

You may turn out to be right. I can't say as I don't follow it "that" close but props to you on digging your heels in. The monotony though.....

Brandin Cooks' two-year contract extension has $36 million guaranteed with $19.8 million maximum average annually.

That’s outrageous for an age 30 & 31 WR. What would Bill Belichick do (WWBBD)?

Not this.
How old was Randy Moss when he signed with the Patriots?
He was 31.

There were 23 WRs that had 1000 receiving yards in 2021. 17 were on their rookie contracts. None were 30+ years of age.

Those are the facts. They don't predict the future. But, they're a pretty good guide.
Cooks salary is 10th on the list - not so bad after all.
No doubt he will slide down that list as new contracts appear over the next season or so.

It is now. As I pointed out earlier in the thread, WRs aged 30+ have a total of 4 1000 yard seasons the past 5 years. Losing speed for an OL is no big deal. Losing speed for a WR is a big deal. No one is getting faster as they grow older.
I agree they overpaid a little and I'm not a fan of the guaranteed money, but I'm not too stressed over it.
Overall I'm glad he's going to be here and I think he can maintain his level of play

Randy Moss

are we really doing this?
Tell me why we shouldn’t.

The statement was it was outrageous to sign a 30 - 31 WR and Bill Belicheck wouldn’t do it. But in fact he did.

Even when Cooks is going to be 2 years younger than when Moss signed.

Cooks is 28 turning 29 in September.

In fact Belicheck signed another receiver at age 27 to contract more recently.

The question was asked would Belicheck do it.

Yes. Yes he would.

First, I would've never restructured his contract in 2021. There was no need to, if you knew what you were doing.

Second, I would've never have cancelled the last year of his contract. That was an act of stupidity.

Third, if I didn't trade him for a 1st or 2nd RD in 2022, I would've have let him playout his old contract at $12.5MM in 2022 and 2023 instead of cancelling then extending the contract at twice the salary. That's just dumb and a total waste of money. And finally, I'd let him become a FA in 2024 and received a 2024 comp pick for his departure at the end of 2023.

I would not try to re-sign him because in 2024 he would be at an age when WRs lose a step and are not the productive WRs they once were.

Now I know you're fond of saying, Oh there will be plenty of cap space next year. That does not excuse the constant pattern of issuing bad contracts and making fiscally irresponsible decisions. Contrary to your popular belief that there will a lot more salary cap space, that is not a license to write frivolous contracts and be fiscally irresponsible with the salary cap and team budget. Spending money unwisely and writing horrible contracts is an act of stupidity or simply a case of having no idea what the hell you are doing. It can only mean you're equally as bad in making bad decisions in other phases of management.
God,

I only read the 1st paragraph.

Are you saying signing Cooks to this contract is a bad deal?

The rest is just a diatribe that should tell everyone all that they need to know. Keep on counting those beans.

I'll try to use the KISS principle here. Mark Davis was able to hire Josh McDaniels as his new head coach. Nick Caserio wasn't able to get McDaniels to agree to an interview. Why is that?

The bridge between stupid and useless is short.

Who cares? Josh McDaniels should not be the standard you hold this org to. There's plenty you could cite. Jm isn't something to b*tch about.

Hey man, I agree with you. McDaniels was pick,..But Calhoun wasn't willing to step up to the plate and pay the price.

Maybe Calhoun was telling the truth when he said his team wasn't the Pats south. Or maybe he's just a cheap sob like his daddy was.

Just remember this, despite our disagreement on Caserio, my thoughts on the McNair's haven't changed. I'm hoping Caserio can overcome the McNair's incompetence. Why? Because I'm a Texans fan.

I don't understand the McDaniels love. At all.
Did not want. Do not want Josh McDaniels to be HC of any team I root for.
Nobody does.

No one here loves him.

the whole Culley just a placeholder, puppet coach was based on Caserio having a plan to bring in one of his NE buddies in at a future date.

McDaniels, Flores, that LB coach were names that kept popping up

What really dumbfounds me is how many here think how grand the way entire way the Cooks contract has been handled. The Brigade is heralding it as brilliant and fantastic.

So you got a 4 year old car loan with 2 years of payments left on your loan. I tell you what I am going to do for you. I'm going to CANCEL the last two years of your current contract loan. You owe nothing more on that loan. Fuhgeddaboudit.

Now, instead, what I'm going to do is replace your old loan with another new two year loan at twice the premium amount of your old loan. Breakout the champagne and caviar. Time to celebrate. Brought to you by the Caserio Easterby of Contract negotiations.

But Hey, next year there will be lots of cap space.

Is Cooks fairly paid for the next 2 yrs or is he overpaid? Do they have the cap space?

Caserio looks at Cooks/Tunsil as blocks to build around. You don't see them this way.

Keep on counting those beans.

I think the only poster that used those exact adjectives to describe the extension is Caserio’s nemesis. I wouldn’t be surprised if this hatred stems from a perceived slight back in their John Carrol days.

These are people, not cars. I can understand where your limited ability for nuance would make you think otherwise.

No one is ecstatic with giving a receiver 19 mil guaranteed a year when he was slated for 12 mil, but what should be obvious is that there was more going on here than just a File Clerk who wants to waste money. I'll hold judgement on the situation until more comes out.

It seems like we wanted to keep Cooks, but he wanted a new contract or a trade. Cooks is a very good (not great) receiver, and is a key piece to the development of our current QB and the WR room as a whole. This year is about seeing what we have in Mills, and keeping Cooks is part of that. If it means showing a measure of commitment to him by redoing his contract, then depending on the NUANCE of the situation, I could feel comfortable with that.

Cooks will be here through Mills tryout year, and if Mills fails, he will be here for our 1st round rookie QB as well.

Cooks was going to be here thru 2023 at half the salary regardless. This is your Executive Vice President of Football Operations, Jack Easterby.

It isn't black and white. The trade discussions were happening for a reason. We don't yet know that reason. My feeling (without direct evidence) is that Cooks wanted guaranteed money or a trade.

Depending on the circumstances, if we gave him a generous short term contract to keep him mentally checked-in, I could be okay with that. If it's just a Preacher throwing money at him (which seems absurd, but stranger things have happened), then I would be biding time until the next regime takes over.

I don't spend money on the Texans...not in 3 years, anyway. They'll get my money when they win. However, I'll hold judgement on the current regime after 2023. No skin off my back or dollars from my wallet.

The market is totally different now, meaning that 12 million is a thing of the past. Actually the going rate is 20+ million for a receiver like Cooks. So we got cook on a discounted rate.

It's kind of like this. If you hadn't not traded a 5th RD pick for a has been WR who was washed up and was being shown the door, you would've pick #148 in your bag this year where a lot of still good players will be available. If you hadn't double a player's salary for no apparent reason when you didn't have to, you would have the money to sign a really good player next year that you won't now.

Miller wan't washed up, he's a very talented head case. If the worst Caserio does is gamble a 5th rd pick on a guy like Miller and lose, then the Calhoun's are in pretty good shape.

If you want a 5th rd pick then trade a couple of the 6th rd picks. I'm on board with this. Then use the 5th and 107 to move up into the 3rd for a guy like Ruckert or Woods.

Cooks contract is only around the 10th in the league. If Texans lose Cooks, who is our #1 receiver?
The young guys need a #1 vet type receiver to watch and learn from and to look up to out on the field.
Bonus question, which free agent would you bring in that can equal Cooks production straight off the bat?

He was already under contract through 2024. Nick voided it. Then he paid him more for 2024.

Devante Adams is from the same draft as Cooks. Cooks only has 204 yards less than Adams.

Adams has about 30 more TDs with almost a hundred more receptions.

Adams is 29. Cooks is 28.

They are both on past for 10000 yard careers that would put them in top 50 all time.

One has played with one of the best QBs playing the last 15 years. One has bounced around the league.

Adams signed a 5 year contract averaging $28 million

Cooks signed a 2 year contact extension averaging $20 million and is a free agent in 2025.

Adams is signed until 2027 when he will be a UFA. In 2025 he has a 7.7 million dead cap hit.

Interpret that as you wish.

Although, I still hold my breath when he gets hit. I underestimated his toughness and durability when he joined the Texans. I don't think he is an elite WR1 and he doesn't help with blocking in the running game. However, he is a smart, dependable, tough and a really good WR2.

Now its not like Cooks has been stuck with chopped liver at QB… Brady, Brees and WD40 with a sprinkle of Goff is not like Hopkins playing with OB’s QB clown car like Hopkins endured for a portion of his career.
The QBs aren’t scrubs but each time he moves he needs to learn a different system, terminology and that QBs playing style and personality.

I would suspect that most WRs would want to play 8 consecutive years with a HOF QB rather than jump around and play with 2 different HOF QBs in the first 4 years and the last 4 years play with lesser QBs.
