In response to that, New England before Belichick had sucked fo
In the beginning Belichick was assistant head coach for Patriots 1996-1999. Hired as head coach in 2000. Tom Brady was drafted 2000 to back up Drew Bledsoe, drafted #1 overall in 1993. He started with a solid nucleus including Willie McGinist, Ty Law, Teddy Bruschi, Lawyer Milloy, Terry Glenn, Kevin Faulk just to name a few. Other than drafting Brady in the 6th rd, nothing much to say first five rounds, nobody mentions that. Following Draft 2001 they did draft Richard Seymour, with Bookend DE’s in Belichick innovative 3-4 (ahead of his time) the Super Bowls started rolling in.
Now, second part can attributed to that winning culture on top of excellent coaching. Premium free agents willing to take pay cuts for Super Bowl ring kept the Patriots @ or near the top talent wise. They didn’t HAVE TO HIT like rest of league on draft equity. So they had talent (via free agency mostly) excellent coaching and a winning culture.
Fast forward to today without Brady. Mac Jones was available (perfect fit for Patriots- can win from the pocket) while other teams foolishly passed for athleticism. He sized a window of opportunity and went contrary to the heard, that is Belichickian. I also find ironic how his assistants have struggled for different organizations as head coaches.
So judging them for what they were, what they are and what they will be is a fairly simple task, if you measure them all in historical context. There are a lot of teams/front offices who draft better but for numerous reasons (health/injury, coaching, culture, talent acquisition) fall short. Usually from meddling ownership, suit GM who is better manager than football genius, which is my big concern of Caserio.
Find your QB, (Which I think Caserio has) and most of these concerns vanish
