Head Coach Candidate (Lovie Smith Hired) 2/7/22

I hope IF McCown is hired, I hope these &ussy Sports writers we have in this town will nut-up and ask the tough questions at the HC introduction, as in "was this the best you could do?", was hiring McCown a better choice than hiring Flores, Bieniemy, Gannon, McDaniels, Mayo, Peterson and Caldwell? Does McCown have more experience and knowledge than these others?
Harbaugh’s available too. Just saying

Gary Kubiak played for Mike Shanahan and has been involved with the NFL twice as long as Josh McCown. McCown was only 4 years old when Gary Kubiak was drafted by the Broncos. I would say that Klint Kubiak is as connected to the NFL as Kyle Shanahan. In addition, Klint has been an actual college and NFL coach for over a decade. So, Klint is veteran of the learned NFL coaching fraternity. BTW - Klint was baptized in the offense that McCown likes best.

You're missing my point,

They both grew up in football families and both are well connected around the NFL.

The argument is so stupid I just tapped out of it.
Klint is vastly more experienced and if they are just handing out HC’ing gigs they might as well just give it to him at this point based on actual coaching experience and the fact he wasn’t even interviewed tells us what’s really going on.

While I want no part of McCown as the next HC, I think I know what might be happening here. Caserio may think it’s going to take 3-4 more years to rebuild, so why not roll the dice on a young guy at the same time?

Best case scenario, Nick builds a contender and McCown ends up being a good HC that can stay long term. A win!

A less good scenario, Nick builds a contender but McCown needs to be replaced cause he ends up holding

Worst case, (for them) McCown sucks and Caserio doesn’t get the right players or coaches and everyone is canned.
There’s a whole bunch of more qualified candidates to do what your suggesting.

Then why don’t they get someone with experience who’s been through the grind of being a coach instead of someone who’s never gone through that grind and giving him the top coaching job there is?

Caserio really needs to cut the bullshit and quit trying to be the smartest man in the room. He’s got a shit ton on his plate already. Why the hell is he playing around with this head coach bullshit? Starting his 2nd year and already on his 2nd head coach, and the roster is still shit.
Hey Speedy I want to apologize to you for our debate about Caserio tanking. You were spot on.

I’m 1000% in agreement with you on this take. No way they should hire this very inexperienced individual. I believe he’s looking for a yes man.

What's really going on? I want to know, because as of this morning they haven't hired a HC yet.

I think he's looking for the next McVay.

It's why he's interviewed Gannon/O'Connell and yes McCown.

Out of the 24 head coaches that have been to 2 or more SBs 10 were NFL DCs, 5 were NFL OCs, 4 were college HCs, 1 was a Canadian League HC & 4 were NFL asst coaches. Of course there is overlap where coaches were a college HC & a NFL DC. I went with NFL OC or DC first, then college or Canadian HC, and finally asst coaches.

Historically speaking we want a DC as our head coach.

Bill Belichick | 9 SBs | NFL DC
Don Shula | 6 SBs | NFL DC
Tom Landry | 5 SBs | NFL DC
Chuck Noll | 4 SBs | NFL DC
Bill Parcells | 3 SBs | NFL DC

Of course Vince Lombardi & Joe Gibbs were both NFL OCs.

Didn’t Mike Shanahan win 2 SB’s and was the O coordinator for SF when Steve Young threw a record 6 TD’s in 1 SB?
The guy won 3 SB’s and now that I think about it, why isn’t he in the HOF?
But yes, as you point out, it seems that D men are very successful

I think McCown & Ward are just like interviewing Lovie last season. Not for the HC job. Just using the opportunity to interview potential staff members.

They offered McCown a position last season. He declined. They brought him in twice this year. He said he’s “all in” but they haven’t announced him as HC.

Most likely he was never in the HC discussion.

This is good information.

My only question is how much of the data of past Super Bowls won outside of the last 15 years is not comparable due to the NFL making changes so that this is a more pass friendly league? Rules that are in favor of QBs and WRs that hamper the old school type of defenses?

I get some right every once in a while. No worries though. We’ve all got our opinions.

The dysfunction of the Texans leads to dysfunction on this board. So many crazy things happening right now.

.
Looks like Texans are targeting likeable, albeit inexperienced candidates in the Caserio era. Caserio must be hoping to grab the next Mike Tomlin (be a year early rather than a year late) on a coaching candidate.

If we get the next Mike Tomlin, do we get a SB ready team with a HOF d-coordinator too?

If that is the case then they need to lock him down.

Either Gannon is waiting for word on another job, or there are too many conditions with him taking the job. Such as McCown, Hamilton, and Lovie.

That would be my guess.
The AFCCG and NFCCG are today. If they have chosen a HC, I wouldn't expect an announcement until at least Monday.

I would be good with Gannon. McCown, not so much...though I would okay if he is the QB coach.

Let's wait to see who's hired before making this post.
No. I don’t have to wait. McClown shouldn’t be invovled in any way in the interview process. That’s the problem.
I don’t care if it’s for the HC position, LOL, an O coordinator position, a QB coach position, or a video asst. He has ZERO experience and no business in this process. It’s laughably stupid.

NFL is a copycat league. Everybody is looking for the next wunderkind.

Problem is they are even less plentiful than frachise QBs. But I hope the Texans grab a wunderkind!
You are right it's a "copycat league" , which is just another way of saying that NFL organizations are very risk aversive, i.e., afraid of innovative decisions, taking a different direction than peers.

So was Bill Walsh, an offensive genius, won 3X.

Just like hollywood. Studios only want to make remakes and sequels. Nobody has the cajones to put their career on the line going a different path from the herd!

Well maybe Caserio does if he makes Mccown HC haha

So you wouldn't want McCown as a QB coach? I would love for him to be the QB coach and really wouldn't have a problem with him as an OC, after having run different offenses for the last 20 years. That doesn't meanan I want him to become the HC.

Quiet likely, in which case Gannon may be their selection. But I'd rather McCown be the QB coach rather than OC. Hope we know early this week.

Any news how Pep Hamilton's interview with Chicago went. I haven't heard he's had any other interview requests. Given a choice between Chicago and Houston, I can't see anyone choosing Chicago as a place to live, for reasons other than football. He's 47, single with no children. I wonder if this is a factor working against him?

My guess is that something will be announced early this week, if a deal was made. His interview was yesterday. You wouldn't, or shouldn't, expect an announcement the same day, or today. There's a contract involved so that means involvement with an agent. There could also be final details to be worked out and the contract signed.

Report: Bears offer Luke Getsy offensive coordinator job

Do we really want someone endorsed by that thug gangster piece of **** Gregg Williams?

Disqualifying, IMO. I want no part of Williams anything.

It appears the Texans are doing their own sequels. 2 years in a row hiring (if McCown is hired) a HC that no one else would have EVER hired. They should change their name from Texans to Trailblazers.

Uh… yeah. This marshmallow squad could use some real toughness, after 6 years of O’Briens fake bravado

Playing like dirty bitches is not toughness.

Not to mention the guy hasn't been successful in how long. But if he sucks Gannon dong so much then he'd almost certainly be brought into the franchise in some capacity. No thanks.

Or you know Gannon could have his own coaching style, I didn't hear anything this season about Philly's defense playing dirty, perhaps give the man a chance?

Lighten up Francis.

They were on the same staff in Tennessee in 2013. Gannon a defensive quality control coach and Williams a senior defensive assistant. Williams was asked a question about someone who had worked under him in the past and he gave a favorable review. Just like most people who have worked with Gannon have done. What do you expect him to do? Plead the 5th to protect Gannon’s image in your eyes when they worked together years after bountygate?

Done deal
Another thing. Folks were saying not to expect the Texans to announce anything because it's Championship weekend.

Didn't seem to stop the Raiders. Though it's been about a week since we heard they interviewed McDaniels.

Gannon's 2nd interview was yesterday so we should probably hear something by Wednesday if they have made a deal.
