NFL Random Thought of the Day

The guaranteed $$$$ is all that matters in a contract and after it's paid out is when you see POS like DB/Hopkins pull this crap. Ownership accepts all responsibility if a guy has a career ending injury or just out for the season, players get paid all of the guaranteed $$$$ in their contracts plus the $$$$ that's non guaranteed for the yr they got hurt.

Then the non-guaranteed part is just a way to keep a player prisoner.

Keep players prisoner?

They certainly didn't have to sign the contract and if they signed the contract then they made themselves prisoners. Like I said I wish they would make players go yr to yr in FA. The product would be much better and this would also benefit the best GM's.

There's nothing stopping owners from only offering 1-yr deals.

You'd think if the best GMs thought this would be best for their ballclubs they would absolutely do so.

Leverage is king. If you have leverage, you use it when you need to, period. Owners do it all the time, players do it all the time. Silly to think someone wouldn't. There's nothing stopping Seattle from just not meeting his requests/demands.

100% right.

The CBA is negotiated, and works, two ways.

A player being locked in a contract they are being under paid based on the market.

Aaron Rodgers put an escalation feature in his contract to remain one of the top paid QBs regardless of other things.

I think they should do away with the guaranteed and non-guaranteed part of contracts. The non guaranteed probably doesn’t get paid out more often than not.

Edit - as I typed the last sentence I thought to myself - watch me be wrong. 3.2.1…

Not a bad game so far to open the season. Brady and Dak both look pretty sharp.
Tampa with a ton of turnovers, but when you have that kind of talent at QB, you can overcome those things. They clean that up and it's a Bucs blowout, because they actually have a team too. The repeat may be on.

And if Dak stays healthy, much to the chagrin of most around here, the Cowboys are going to be a force to deal with.

Dallas had their share of turnovers as well & a pretty reliable kicker who was uncharacteristically off today.

if both teams played perfect, it still would have been a pretty good game.

Yeah.

Interesting article on Joe Horn encouraging his son (top ten pick in this year’s draft) Jaycee Horn to play CB at a young age rather than WR. I am surprised more young athletes don’t get pushed this route by coaches. Stud athletes at WR are a dime a dozen these days, but there is a clear shortage at DB. If you get a stud athlete and train him from a young age to dedicate his time to being a DB, his chances of success (D1 scholarship, making it to NFL) would go up quite a bit I think.

In particular, I look at Texans practice squad WR Jalen Camp. He was a 6th round pick of the Jaguars this season due mainly to measurables, not a lot of stats in Georgia Tech’s triple option offense. He started playing football sophomore year of high school.

He is 6’2 220 with 33 3/4” arms, a 4.48 40, 39.5” vertical, and 29 bench press reps (would have been a combine record for WRs). If he had been trained as a DB when he started 6 years ago I suspect he would have gone higher than 6th round in the NFL draft.

When I look at prototypical DB measurables the list starts and ends with Jalen Ramsey right now. There just aren’t many CBs that have his combination of size, speed and athleticism. But you can find some WRs with similar measurables. Alot of those WRs without near the accolades.

Take WR Chris Conley for example. Insane measurables but has been a journeyman WR3 in the NFL majority of his career. How many DBs have measurables like these guys and aren’t highly successful as a DB in the NFL?

Stud DBs are indeed rare. Back when I was in HS, DBs were similar to WRs but had bad hands or weren't quite as fast. Plus everyone wanted to play an offensive skill position in HS as it's more glamorous. Also in HS there are superior athletes that go both ways like a WR or RB playing DB and are good at it. These guys shake out to their more permanent position in college. Looks like Horn had a great head start in addition to his natural ability.

How is Tyron Matthieu on the sideline if he tested positive for covid? & he's not wearing a mask.
He quarantined for 10 days but who knows anymore? I can’t keep up with the inconsistencies. Vaxxed or not you can still transmit, none of it makes much sense, glad I’m not making the rules on the run…..

@Corrosion Did you watch the Rams/Bears yesterday?

Keep in mind, I do not disagree with you, that a team has to have that ability to string together long drives. But yesterday, the Rams were one big play after the next & seemed unstoppable. The Bears were controlling the game, they were throwing short passes, getting big runs... but started to make mistakes there at the end of the game.

A lot of things go into winning & losing, I get that. But that Rams big play offense was on yesterday.

it's definitely reminiscent of twitch/japanesetv/YouTube reactions/etc. and I dig it. it's definitely A future of broadcasting. I think one game per week for now will be great. young America's ready, but the majority of voters might not be. yet.

My favorite part was Peyton telling Kelce what he should tell Mahomes to do when he hears a play call he disagrees with…

Make hand gestures like the helmet radio isn’t working. Then wave off the coach and say, “Ok i’ll call my own play!”

I wonder how many times Peyton did that in his career :)

2019 #4 overall pick Clelin Ferrell was a healthy scratch for the Raiders on Monday Night.

Ferrell's selection was surprising on 2019 draft night, as many thought he was a reach that high. Raiders' GM Mike Mayock defended the pick then.

“At the end of the day, people act like the thought wouldn’t occur to me to trade down and still get Cle(lin),” Mayock said via Sports Illustrated. “He was our guy, OK? And whether we got him at 4, 8, 10, it didn’t matter. He was gonna be our guy.”

“He’s a foundation player. And even more importantly, he’s a three-down defensive end who can stick his hand in the dirt and play on run downs and pass downs. He’s not a guy who’s going to be a designated pass rusher. He’s in there on every snap. And he’s gonna set the tone for us, as far as these young guys are concerned. I couldn’t wait to get to that pick.”
Mayock's "foundational player" wasn't one of Gruden's 46 active players on opening night. Maybe this was a message to Mayock that the GM is on the hot seat?

I'm definitely not "young America." But I love it.
my buddy asked me if I'd want to watch that feed if the Texans were playing, and I guess it depends. I might record it in case we win and watch the regular feed, or maybe that just speaks to my reaction to being in this abusive relationship with this team..

Lots of good QB play this weekend. I especially would like to appologize to Teddy Bridgewater & Jimmy Garropolo. Two guys I may not have been fair to recently.

Another bit of bad news for the Cowboys................DeMarcus Lawrence has been reported to have broken his foot and he is said to be out for 6-8 weeks. From what I've been able to find out, this is a Jones fracture (5th metatarsal). As a pass rusher, I would not put him out there before 10 weeks, as these fractures are notorious to require a 2nd surgery if the player is brought back too soon. Furthermore, he he suffered a Jones fracture prior to his rookie season. If this is the same side and thus a late refracture, the time he will require for rehab will be much longer............and could threaten not only his season, but possibly even his career.

So Carolina coming to Houston a week from tonight with the game on the NFLNetwork which my cable provider doesn't offer.
I dunno will that game also be telecast on another network locally so we locals can watch on TV?
