The Olson type of cap mgmt as yielded how many championships and how long has Olson been on the job not only with the Texans org but before he joined the Texans?

I'm glad there was a housecleaning, I just wish Easterby had been a part of the housecleaning.

I also know that when people are doing wrong in their jobs nobody likes the hatchet man and will go to great lengths to try to destroy the hatchet man.

Liked for the last sentence in this post.

As far as the 1st part of the post, let them bring a few Lombardi's down on Kirby then we can compare.
Well listen here Steel: Speaking of Lombardi, what if NC just hired the black Vince Lombardi in David Culley ? How about that Steel ?
What would you say to that, huh ? Go put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Handling of the cap has alot to do with the talent and therefore the results of what happens between the lines. You know this.

LOL

I'm for anybody of any race/color (Be it White/Black/Brown/Blue or Green) entering the doors on Kirby if they can have the success Lombardi had. But I think you missed my point.

Getting a new team gave some hope for awhile, but 20 years of suck has sucked even that out of most
The McNairs were bequeathed a ton of goodwill from the Houston sports fans for bringing pro football back to the city. And they've taken two decades to squander it. Maybe I'm overreacting to the worst offseason in Texans history. But I think this franchise is heading to the pre-Bum Oiler days. Where fans couldn't give a flip about this team, and it was totally ignored. The product is boring. There's no superstar left. And their image has become some kind of cross between corporate buffoons, a religious cult, and a S&M parlor.

Why do I care about this team? Because it's a NFL team in my city? I can't come up with another reason at the moment. I'm ambivalent towards the new coach and GM, as well as the players they've brought in. I strongly dislike the team's spirit leader. And I have zero point zero respect for the ownership. The 2002 hope for the future is a distant memory.

My fandom is hanging on by my fingernails. And I hate that.

Just 2 years ago this team had a legit shot to make it to an AFCCG before the eventual SB champs came back in epic fashion.
Just 7 years before that they were tied for the 2nd best record in the league & again had a legit shot to make it to the AFCCG before they lost to a franchise who has had the greatest run of dominance in the sport.................... EVER.

4 division championships in what the last 6 years?

I say that to say The whole "decades to squander" crap is just that...crap. This team over the last 10 years has been more, or at least as competitive as most of the teams in the NFL. No they haven’t ever been to an AFCCG, but There are at least 4-5 other teams who have gone well over 20 years without having been to one....Cowgirls, Redskins, Dolphins, Raiders...... storied franchises bro. Further, even those who have been to at least 1, there are still around a dozen or so teams who have been to 4 or less for their entire existence....We're talking over 50 years in some instances. Fact is, appearing in those games tends to happen in bunches, usually in 1 really special time period when said team was really good.

Do the math. Prior to last year, the Bills had been to 5 AFCCG's...well we know 4 of those happened in the 90's over 20+ years ago during their run. That means that prior to that they'd only been to 1 in like 30 something years. Saints have been dominant under Payton/Brees & those 2 own the only 3 appearances that franchise has everhad in their 50 year existence......Cardinals have been around for 123 years...They've only been to 2 all time. The Chiefs? 4...3 of those happened literally within the last 3 years which means that they went 50 years with only 1 appearance back in the damn 60's.

Im not saying as a fan you shouldn't want to see your team in the mix for a championship every year, but reality says that most teams on a yearly basis aren't really in the mix either like y'all think they are. Even those with all the championships are barely making it once every 5-6 years.

QFT regarding the very 1st sentence. One thing I’ve always hated about being a fan here…way too much front running with this city’s fan base…& the excuse that we’ve sucked so long doesn’t really fly IMO either…some here act like every other teams’ fan base are winning and competitive every year.Only 1 team wins it every year and 15-20 years of a franchise not really being in the mix for a championship is fairly common.
When I feel we have had it bad as Texans fans I just look at the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars and the Buffalo Bills and I feel a whole lot better as to what we have had to endure since the beginning of our team. Weak division or not I will take the division wins we have had over all the bottom feeding the teams I mentioned have gone through.

I felt this way back in 2010. It's taken this long to flush the toilet. Hopefully they finally get the rebuild right. The star gazing that you're talking about did nothing more than make the McNair's money. I hope this time the franchise is built on a solid foundation. This remains to be seen, but atleast they wont be treading water like they would've been doing with the Pervert still here. On the bright side the Pervert is going to force the McNair's into doing what they should've been doing all along instead of being the Vinny franchise.

A marketing company with a football division. You can thank Bob McNair/Jamey Rootes for this, starting with the Carr pick and moving forward 20 yrs. Now that McNair is dead and Rootes is gone change will occur. Whether that will be change in a positive way time will tell, but I'm happy the franchise is being forced to change the way it's done business for the last 20 yrs.

Good news is if this doesn't work out the McNair's will most likely sell the franchise and being honest, I think that's what most fans on this MB would consider to be a positive outcome. If things workout with Caserio that would be optimal. If they dont then the McNair's will either sell or move the team. I consider this a win-win over what's been going on since 2010.

Most likely? The McNairs selling this franchise is very, very unlikely. And if this latest reorg doesn’t work, there will be another flush. The problem with that is that there will always be one turd that just won’t flush.

Though that may be true, it doesn’t mean we have to accept settling for mediocre either.

To me it doesn’t really matter if we’re the Lions or Jags, or if we’re some middling team that can beat other middling and the bad but get slaughtered by the good. If we’re not, at the very least, perennial conference title game contenders, what difference does it really make?

I don’t care if we’re better than the Lions, Jags or Browns of the last 20 years. I want to be on par with, in a perfect world the Patriots of course, but the Steelers, Packers, Seahawks, and now Chiefs.

Yeah it’s great that we’re not the Lions and Browns of the last 20 years, but I don’t want to be the Chargers either.

The Pats are an exception not the rule & it’s simply unrealistic to think you can “be on par” with what they have done over a 20 year span. It’s also coming up on 5 years that the Steelers have been to an AFCCG, and over 10 years since they won one. And with Ben on his last legs, that streak will likely go on for at least another 5 years. It ain’t as easy as it appears.

To be honest, I wish I still have the same passion for local sports teams that I had as a young man. I feel that that youthful exuberance was a positive aspect in my life. I took pride in knowing not only the batting order of the Houston Astros on any given day but also the successes and setbacks of some of the farm team talent. I enjoyed sitting down on a Saturday to "scout" potential Oilers/Texans draft picks.

Oh well. Like you, I have a lot going on right now so unless I'm checking in on this board I'm not thinking about the Texans. If I was to take a guess, I think this board is how I found out how they did in about 60% of the games last year. That'll probably go up to 75-80% this season. I'm working fulltime again and just signed up for 3 classes in the Fall.
Yep. I agree completely.

As entertainment goes, this franchise does not have a lot to offer. And when life has more pressing concerns, then entertainment in general should be lowered priority for any man that is responsible.

Then take the entertainment aspect and consider everything available to us (too numerous to mention), and it becomes a very simple concept of valuing your limited time for entertainment and considering if something is worthy of that time or not.

And to be quite honest, as I get older, I value a beautiful autumn day outside more than any spectator sport entertainment. Gone are the days when I'd marathon watch an entire Sunday for football.

And good for you going back to school! I'm actually considering the same thing. Change of careers, get out of this rat race business. Might just start with one class, though, to get my brain gears going and back in the groove of studying. It's been a long time.

I'm still looking forward to the season as much as I ever have.
I'm looking forward the NFL season, just not necessarily the Texans season.

Houston has always been a front running fan base. The Texans get back to a competitive franchise the fans will support them better than ever. Like they did with the Luv ya Blue teams of the late '70's. Houston had been a sucky franchise until Bum was hired, then him getting fired and the later 35-3 so disillusioned the fan base that they have never recovered. Moving the team cost more fans. Getting a new team gave some hope for awhile, but 20 years of suck has sucked even that out of most

edit: Sorry but it sounded better in my head... there's just no way to put 40 years of frustration in a few words
I completely understand your point, but I'm not so sure if a frontrunner fanbase is going to sell out a football stadium for 20 consecutive years.

This is the first season that this franchise has ever experienced any struggle with selling season tickets since 2002. And that struggle is directly correlated with terrible ownership/management and a naked emperor surrounding himself with yes-men clowns.

I feel this post. I don't want to, but it is what it is. I can't fake caring about something that feels rotten to its core. Cal is basically a trustfund baby and there is nothing about him, his demeanor, or his history that would indicate to me that this franchise is in competent hands that will ever be capable of fielding a championship-level team.

And while folks might refute your "taken two decades to squander it" point, all they have to take into account is current fan apathy, struggle to sell merchandise and tickets, and the overall perception of this entire franchise from both a local and national perspective.

I feel no delight in the Texans being marginally 'better' than the Browns or Lions. There is no solace in being a member of the shitty franchise club.

Add bad ownership to the list at #1 and bad GM/FO personnel at #2 and it explains why all of the rest of the bad things are on the list. BTW, I agree about bad contracts, that falls on the GM and Olson. I cant believe some here are clamouring for Olson. LMAO
So is what you're saying is you're happy to have Jack Easterby as the Texans Executive Vice President of Football Operations instead of Chris Olson who was Senior Vice President of Football Operations? Really?? You know that Jack replaced Chris in that position the day after Olson was fired, right?

Educated guess........or not so educated depending on how you want to look at, but i believe Houstonian's and Texans in general's love of football & the apparent 2nd to none pregame atmosphere would still see Reliant getting sold out for 20 consecutive years regardless of what happens on the field. Further if there's any struggle to sell merchandise & tickets which i'm not buying at all, i believe it has more or as much to do with folks still reeling from the pandemic as well as what you're saying. I discount the "national" perspective on all of my local teams simply b/c Houston has never been huge on their radar unless there's value in clicks to be gained with a bad story....The proof? Look no further than the Astros who are kicking ass & yet all they want to talk about is something that took place 3 years ago.

I think what you're seeing is disillusion from fans who look at the current roster & don't see any guy on it they want to cheer for...The fan favorites for years in Watt, Nuk and DW4 are all gone or will be soon & imo that shows the overwhelming frontrunning nature of the fan base right there. & don't get me wrong that contingent of a teams' fan base is present for every team, i just believe there's a larger concentration in ours for some reason. I watch Packers/Steelers/49ers games and there are a bunch of Favre/Rodgers/Big Ben jerseys in the stands, but i see way more general Packers, Steelers & 49er generic gear than anything else...At Texans games i see an in my estimation a disproportionate number of player jerseys or nothing at all than anything else. You see it at rockets games too....Fans here show up for the ambiance and atmosphere of a live game setting rather than as true diehard fans of the team.

I've already said that I would've had a full housecleaning, that would've included Easterby and Olson. What they've done (boardroom m entality hasn't worked and Cal becomes a Jim Irsay type owner. (There's a great artilcle about the Irsay's and Baltimore/Indy franchise move but they started the article in 1972. good stuff that I'm not doing justice.) LMAO what are the chances?

The article is in the Athletic.

Man Houston football fans are by far the worst. I use to argue that we weren’t. But after all this nonsense that’s going, these jokers want the McNairs to sell the team. They’re not purchasing any tickets. So my question is would it be best if we just didn’t have a professional football team? The Astros was in the dump for a many of years. But their fan base stayed loyal.

Attendance levels certainly didn't show that.. I remember buying cheap seats and basically moving down to field level or making my way into the Crawford box..

That’s right. If the Texans just finish the 2021 season with a 9-8 record, Culley should win coach of the world. Because, compared to most of the rest of the league, the talent on the roster is lacking. And he probably has/had no say in it. But if it all goes sideways, he’ll be the fall guy.

Just curious what people think after watching and listening to DC for a few weeks. I‘m impressed. I love his total focus on holding onto the ball and taking it away. I like his anger at pre-snap penalties and his focus on consistency. The players seem to love him and Lovie and the other coaches. They mimic the issues he is focused on. Seems like this team might have something here. And kudos for the interviews and getting players in front of the press also.

He’s been very clear about using the run game to set up the passing game. He’s made it clear that the OL and DL identifies the heart of the team. gonna take some games and time to see how he will use all of his elements. Doubt he will post the playbook here but he appears to know exactly what he wants and he’s got a pretty good group of position coaches to help him get it.

I'm more interested in what the team will look like than what Culley has to say. I'm not even talking about wins and losses. There will be losses and plenty of them. Just how the team carries itself and competes for 60 minutes. All we have right now is fluff.

The Texans hired a head coach that did not bring his own playbook. Think about that for a minute. He didn't bring in his own OC. Or DC. So, why not keep the same guy as last year? When it doesn't work (and it won't), Caserio can hire another OC.

No one from the Texans organization will admit this season (and maybe the next) is a tank. But, what does this look like? Actions speak louder than words.

Our biggest problem last season was not the offense. Could it have been better? Yes. However when compared to the defense last season it was a step up.
It was so many things….fewest rushing attempts in the league, losing the turnover game, OL penalties and lack of unity. Bad defense. I’m encouraged that these appear all to be the exact issues DC is focused on. He doesn’t like mistakes and his players know it. After twenty five years in the league I’m pretty sure he knows what works and what doesnt. I’m intrigued in his choice of Lovie as DC. He wanted a 4-3 D No doubt. Would love to hear his his thoughts about the choice after watching film of the D from last year. Must have been his intent to fix the run D. He’s got a lot of problems to fix that will take time but instilling a disciplined and fundamentally sound team has to come first.

Any head coach worth a darn insists on hiring their own coordinators and staff and most want control of the 51 man roster at a minimum. What the Texans have now is a guy, David Culley who is more than willing to make all of Caserio's mistakes. The hiring of Culley is Caserio's BIGGEST blunder in his short time as Texans GM. Then again I seriously doubt that Caserio will be able to hire any head coach with a serious resume and an impressive winning record. The Houston Texans is now a place where head Coaches go to end their careers as head coaches.

That's all fine and dandy. It still takes talent though. OB was horrible but he had talent....well....until he got rid of it all, which is what Culley has been left to start with. If he can survive until Caserio can rectify that, maybe we'll see what kind of coach he really can be. Until then, I feel he's just Bo Porter.

Every football team goes into the season trying to win. If you were the coach would you tell your players it’s a blunder if you go out there to win games.
Agree. I’ve never thought for one second that the Texans are in tank mode. I don’t even know how it is possible to “tank”. If the Texans wanted to tank all they would have to do is keep the same team they had last year. Everything NC and DC is doing is being done to erase that memory and change the teams culture so that next years draftees arent Coming into a losing culture. Why waste their first year next year in rebuild mode.
