[Pick 67] Davis Mills QB Stanford

Jack Burton

Veteran
I have heard it suggested on here that QBs who throw multiple INTs in college are doomed to fail in the NFL. I have never heard of this “Marino” guy but it sounds like another story of a miserable failure after throwing multiple INTs in a college game! 😉
Marino is one of the many “Multiple INTS in one game QB failures” that dot the landscape of the NFL.

Marino lost that game too.
Unlike Mills multiple int game where he brought his team back in OT and won the game on a perfectly thrown TD into the back of the end zone. What an utter failure of a QB.
Especially considering Mills was a 3rd round pick. How dare a team draft him that high!?!?

P. Manning was the number one draft pick and he threw 28 interceptions in his rookie year. He also threw 23 interceptions in his fourth year. But hey we want perfection right. Lol

I understand that.
But in this case, Vermeil indicates that he didn't.
Maybe he did, but in that article, he said otherwise.
Maybe he was just throwing out different things for the reporters to have things to write about.
Here. I know you are needing it. And you didn’t post the most trustworthy article. It was a blog post. Admittedly I didn’t Google the writer.

Vermeil didn't send a smoke screen to Knox.

He actually confided to Knox that he likes Tuttle, according to your article.

Knox then took Tuttle, the guy that Vermeil liked.

The Buffalo News got one thing wrong though.
Like I said, Vermeil got fired after that season; he never gets the last laugh.
Not that Knox gets the better by taking the guy that Vermeil liked either, since Tuttle didn't amount to much.

Sorry, but you got the story wrong and used it incorrectly.

There was never a smoke screen in this situation.

Where did you hear that?

And do you realize that 2 QBs drafted ahead of Marino (Blackledge and Kelly) had worse college career TD/INT ratio?

The rules were different then.
QBs weren't protected like they are today.

Also, the opponents matter.

Marino played against 6 ranked teams.
Fla St. was ranked 13th at year end with a 9-3 record that included a loss to Marino.

ND was unranked, but they had a winning record and a pretty good defense (19th).

FYI, the game was played different back then.
Defenders were allowed to attack the QB like there's no tomorrow.
The rules didn't favor the passing game as they are now.
The Colts Oline included two rookies, a second-year man and two old guys at the end of their career, one of them was a former 9th rder.
One of the starting receiver was also a rookie (Jerome Pathon, ever heard of him?)
That Colts team was already bad (3-13 the year before.)
You also need to consider the number of pass attempts and the situation (playing from behind, etc.)

I have never said the story was an example of a smokescreen. If fact I said multiple times it wasn’t.

You wanted to believe that because it didn’t serve your agenda.

I have said multiple times the story was used to show if you tell someone something it shows interest. Not a smokescreen.

Reading is hard for you. It’s very apparent.

Caserio could be trying to create buzz around a player they don’t want to get the player they do.

Are you believing that GMs don’t create smokescreens or other things to protect their pick?
You're confusing me here.
What were these smokescreens you were talking about?

Can't we just admit the Texans got away with a screwup and move on?

I don't know it for a fact. I just know that this guy made the call to Mills before the pick was in.

Only if we can agree that Bigfoot exists. Using your logic, we don’t know it for a fact, but their are some pretty convincing evidence out there.

That's what I tried to tell them folks when they brougbt up the old'timers.
Make no sense to me.

It makes plenty of sense. Yall are acting like we don't do this every year. Yall are acting like the ones that actually get paid to talk about sports doesn't do this. Some of the media heads compared him to Andre Luck. He's a quarterback, therefore game on right.

Enough has already been said.

I will just leave you guys with some parting thoughts on this matter.

Guys that check all the boxes (physique, arm, atheliticism, smart, playmaker, yada yada) don't go in the third round, behind 7 other guys in this day and age.

Peyton, Luck, Herbert, etc. all were tagged as first rounders before they decided to go back to college.

Even Eli was.
Even Trubisky was.

No more on Mills for me for a long while.

Ciao.
....and after all your silly rhetoric, you failed to list the one stat that sealed his fate for coming out early for the 2021 NFL Draft......he had 16 CFB starts and a past injury. Just about every analyst except “you” (like the rest of us unpaid player analyst) felt like Mills should’ve returned for another season of CFB. Had he done this most everyone felt this would’ve put him in RD1 talks for the 2022 NFL Draft. He walked away from Stanford due to the uncertainty of C-19 affects for the 2022 season and potentially left a lot of money on the table. As for the Texans, this could become a windfall if they show patience in developing Mills.

I've got a couple of problems with this.

1. I don't think QB should have been on the radar, unless there was one special prospect that fell to us. If there's two, they're not special.

2. Why would you call the fallback, tell him he's going to be the pick... if the primary is still on the board. What if the Vikings didn't take a QB & they were both there?

I don't believe the Mond family are lying in any case. Misunderstanding what took place, maybe. Repeating lies told to them, maybe.

Either way, it doesn't make sense to me & makes me like the pick even less.
It is very strange if it happened. Seeing Mills is the better prospect. I can only assume that IF the call happened, Mond was who Nick either:

1- Felt would be available and not Mills. As Mills according to scouting report sites has a much higher ceiling.

2- A misinterpreted call... maybe even an accidental call. And not to upset the family with "ooops wrong number", they said something the family took as they were drafting him.

3- The phone call is not from the Texans. And for whatever reason the family felt the need to indicate someone was going to draft him.

Mills is projected as a 1st had he stayed in school. As you said. I think he came out because of covid. He was unsure of what was going to happen with restrictions and such. Knew he had at least a 2nd (late) or 3rd (start/mid) grade and would be able to get on a team and then if covid caused any issues...he was set. I know a few prospects came out early due to "unsure covid restrictions".

He's projected as a 1st if he stayed & he played well.

& truth be told he isn't/wasn't talked about like the guys they're talking about now.

Most likely because of the way they handle Covid in California & he didn't impress with the little opportunity he had.
Well that doesn't make sense.. He had to impress with the little opportunity he had or he wouldn't of been drafted where he was (or projected to go even higher).. I mean Kellen Mond started 46 games in the SEC and was taken just one pick ahead of him. Mills only had less than a 1/4 of that amount of starts and was taken with the very next pick. That doesn't happen unless he "impressed" in his little opportunity given. At least I don't think it would.

Well that’s kinda circular.

& it was the Texans who drafted him & I’m arguing it was a mistake.
Yeah, but mocks had him going even higher and ahead of Mond? Who cares if the Texans drafted him (or whoever it would've been), they got him at a perceived value spot at that point. I think people are nitpicking the selection, because it was our first selection.. it's still a 3rd round pick.

QB, became a #1 need on this team. Why not take a 3rd round flier on a guy with 5 star tools? Who's only even available, because we're all living in the twilight zone and living in Covid land. (Much worse for a Pac 12 player.)

When you watch the guy on tape, he has all the raw tools, physical traits, and talent to be a franchise quarterback. Only thing he's lacking is reps..because of a historic pandemic and a injury.

I'll take a 3rd round lottery ticket on that type of midround quarterback every year.. Especially over a QB who had 46 starts and already cemented/proven his top draft potential.. Only 1 pick ahead of the guy with 11 collegiate career starts. That's telling on what scouts think about Mills' ceiling. Due to unprecedented circumstances, Mills isn't your typical "mid round quarterback prospect". If there ever was a year for Houston to do what they did (Especially with all the Watson crap), it was this unprecedented year.

Yes.

I don't believe QB was our #1 need. I believe it was adequately addressed already. Tyrod, Finley, & then afterwards with Driskel.

Same as Tom Savage, same as a lot of guys.

Was Russell Wilson a mistake when Seattle drafted him in the 3rd round?
Was Ronnie Knox a mistake when the Bears drafted him in the 3rd round in 1957? Yes. Because HOF QB Sonny Jurgensen was taken 6 picks later by the Eagles. Knox never threw a pass in the NFL.

Don't know what any of this has to do with the Texans. Just fun facts about QBs and the draft.

The talk of Mills getting round one talk in 22 would as with others be based on the expectation the player would progress in an additional season in college. Mills did not do that and I don't think that projection should be given.

A windfall would be experienced if any of our Draft picks this year develop.

Right. The Texans have to somehow get him that experience.
