McKinney traded to Dolphins for Shaq Lawson

Teams will swap late round picks also apparently. Not seen confirmation yet.

Lawson due $7.9m in guaranteed base salary in 21 and then $8.9m in 22.

Lawson has a better pass rush win rate than anyone on the Texans last season. McKinney would ride the pine behind Cunningham if he stayed. The cap ramifications are about even. Trade makes sense based on filling need.

Seems like were signing folks were kicking out next year. Were are all the talent were gonna groom for next year if we ain't got picks?

Means Watson is gone right? I surely hope so.

I see them signing vets on 1 year deals to fill out positions.

They seem like they are setting their floor to build from, mostly on the cheap, keeping their cap options open for whatever happens with Watson.

Lawson’s contract looks like it could be reworked for some cap relief.

Can we trade Mercilus for anyone?
Not unless a team that trades for Watson is forced to take him.

So, the Texans have the following players to man the RDE spot:

Whitney Mercilus
Jacob Martin
Shaq Lawson
Jonathan Greenard

Can any of these guys get to the QB? Can any of these guys stop the run?

I was expecting McKinney to be cut. Don't understand this deal for Texans. Can Lawson cover?
If McKinney was likely to be cut (meaning we recoup nothing for him), but instead we trade him for a player who has utility for the Texans in new DC Lovie Smiths defense, does that not sound like a good deal for the Texans ?
BTW Lawson is also two years younger than McKinney.

Depends. The Texans would have saved $6.5 million if they had cut McKinney. In taking the Lawson contract, the Texans are spending $8 million. Could Caserio have found more value than a part-time DE for $8 million?

Cutting or moving McKinney was a no-brainer. He had become less productive and was no longer a fit for the defense. Spending $8 million on Lawson? That's a head scratcher.

So you saying Lawson is not a 3 down defensive player, just a one trick pony edge rusher?

The teams are also swapping late-round picks in the deal. Miami is sending out a 2021 sixth-round pick and receiving back a 2021 seventh-round pick, sources told ESPN.

The Texans, who parted ways with franchise icon J.J. Watt this offseason, were in desperate need of pass rush help, and Lawson graded out as Pro Football Focus’ 28th-best edge defender out of 109 qualified players (incidentally, new teammate Whitney Mercilus was at the very bottom of that list). Lawson’s four sacks and 25 QB pressures won’t make headlines, but he will be a welcome addition to the club’s pass rushing corps just the same. He will likely shift back to defensive end in new DC Lovie Smith‘s scheme.

Can we trade Mercilus for anyone? I’ll even take Osweiler or Jacoby Jones at this point if it means dropping the dead weight that is Whitney.
Day at a time. Most wanted BM gone now he is. When mine are gone I feel better but immediately start looking for the next move! Is this trade with dolphins a precursor to another? I do think McKinney is two years older.

IIRC lawson it's been very good against the Run. Not as good getting to the quarterback

So....Caserio should have a baseline offer that he can take to other teams to see if anyone can top it.
Slow down. If anything Miami suggested a low ball & Caserio countered with pie in the sky... if the subject was breached at all. The only thing anyone would know is Miami is interested & Watson is on the table.

I'm not on Twitter. What's this about?
Neither am I, it was the same as the pic texansballer has screenshotted above, but it seems Lawson has since deleted his tweet.

I felt like it was a good sign that he’d tweeted it and am a little worried now that it’s a bad sign he’s felt the need to take it down.

D-Quitter probably hit him up, saying,” hey fam I’m out of there”. Take that skit down.

Think it’s a fair deal for both sides...which is refreshing lol. They needed MLB help badly and got a pretty solid guy in McKinney and we needed pass rush and run support help and Lawson who is very good against the run and average in pass rush fills that need for us.

kinda had to laugh at dolphins fans thinking they got over on us tho. Over on 1 of their MB, Some believe that McKinney will be an upgrade for them in the run support (true), but think that he’ll also be employed as a pass rusher too.

Yes Lawson over BM but not over a cap savings if McKinney just cut. This is a Bill O'Brien type trade unless it is foreplay for a later deal. Even then, I just don't get it. Anyone think that a Howard trade for someone on our roster could be next? That would benefit both teams while not making Howard part of a DW trade in that Dolphins could give up more picks.

Miami could use the $9 million savings for Howard to take a high dollar player from Houston.

Edit: I believe if traded Cobb's dead is $4 with savings of just over $6m. His cap for Miami would be the $10 so they would get a WR for less than what paying Howard who wants to leave. Hmmm

What do you mean it doesn’t make sense. We struggled with getting pressure on the opposing quarterbacks. The only player that brought pressure was JJ who is gone now. Lawson brings that type of pressure. And they probably got him because he might fit in good with the type of defense Lovie employ’s. Makes plenty of sense

Pressure and QB hits are good but he's very poor at Sacks. So I'm considering that he might be late to the Target. Again better than McKinney but not better than the cap savings

Shaq gets 25 pressures in 14 games, including some games when he wasn't fully healthy.

JJ Watt gets 29 in 16.

I think that's pretty good.
I stand by my last two posts
On the matter. Pressures are important but with Shaq it seems like they're not disrupting the play nor getting a sack. This Shack can't sack!

Well hopefully NC can find us a sack monster or players like Martin, Greenard and Omenihu stepping their games up.
Omenihu registered 21 pressures playing part time; he can get better.

Granted, neither Omenihu nor Lawson had the same presence as Watt.
I don't think the stats includes batted ball.
And most QBs often look over their shoulder when they're in a 5 or 7-step drop with him in there.

But we have to think that Lovie Smith can run a D better than what we had last year.
