I have to question whether or not they'd come close to getting that , not with viewership down~10% from last season to this one and similar numbers for the playoffs and Superbowl down 12% from last year .... those numbers on top of a decade long decline in viewers ?
This looks even worse when you figure most games either had no in person fans or very limited including the Superbowl so for the overwhelming majority of people the only way to watch a football game was TV and viewership was still down. The number is still in the millions but what people forget is that buying ad time, the only reason networks care about ratings, is also much more expensive during a football game.

(Keeping the numbers simple) If I buy a 30 seconds ad on a sitcom and it cost me 100k and reaches 1 million people that means I paid $1 per 10 people. Thats a great deal. Now say I pay 1 million for that same ad and it reaches 5 million people. Now I've only reached 5 people per dollar spent. So yes I've reached more people but my value has been cut in half. Not to mention Super bowl ads are usually very expensive to produce because so many watch the SB just for the ads so now that 30 second ad may have cost 2-5 times as much just to make. Believe me even with the still high number of viewership the NFL and networks are not happy with the current tread of their games.

People counter this argument with, more people are streaming games so viewership is the same or maybe has risen. With gambling now legal I could see viewership rising, but not to the tune of doubling the cost of the deal.

The question I'd like to pontificate on (without adding another Watson thread), how does Watson repair his reputation/image here in Houston? I'm still a big fan of who he is on the field, and I used to be a fan of the guy that still appeared very humble accepting that big new contract a few months ago, but now I see him as a spoiled whining little brat.

Has Watson entered Bill O'Brien level of distrust (and maybe even disgust) among fans? Has he become...

Mahomes was playing in his 2nd SB and reached an AFCCG in his 3rd yr as a starter. DW4 can only hope to reach these heights in his career. Although the OL was terrible in the run game they actually did a pretty good job protecting DW4 but his holding onto the ball to long and slow processing. Yes he's being a selfish petulant child.

We obviously aren't going to agree on this and I hope 31 other teams think like you do and the Texans get more value than what he would be worth to me.
Again, it doesn't matter of the disagreement, you cherry pick alot without support. Yes Mahomes is playing in his second SB, that is correct, but you won't acknowledge he has a much superior team, coaching staff, and organization. Yet, he has thrown 2 tds and 4 picks in the superbowl. Does that mean he's not a great qb? No. Does it mean he doesn't show up? No. All I ever ask anyone is to be objective in assessment. How many players on the Texans can start for the Chiefs? Is that Watson fault? In your eyes it is because of some ridiculous reason probably. The pressure Mahomes was under is typical for Watson. When you have Julian Davenport starting, Martin who can't block my 85 yr old dad and whomever else, yet he still performed at a high level. Does he hold the ball at times, yes, two things can be true. What about the countless jailbreak he's had to escape? What about the piss poor coaching when the TJ Watt is left unblocked? What about management taking away a top 3 wr in his prime. You think Reid is going to trade Kelce or Hill right now?

I dont claim to know, I give my thoughts on who has the best chance. After watching 4 yrs of DW4 he's not a championship level QB. IMHO

Shoot me for my opinion.
I challenged you ,no shooting needed, who are the championship caliber qbs coming into the NFL draft. When I posed this to you awhile back, you started making excuses for Burrow, Herbert, Tua. You also admitted you were wrong on a few others. So again, who are the championship quality qbs coming into the draft? I also recall your love for Nathan Peterman, but no need to bring that back up

The biggest issue with Watson is his contract .... He has one more season then he's a cap killer - Even if the cap goes up $10m per year he's still 22.1% in 23 and 22.5% in 23.

If the Texans trade him and they are paying 17% of his salary .... that's a big deal for the receiving team in terms of a cap advantage. That team would be paying him 19.2% of their cap in 22 and 19.8% in 23 instead of the above figures.
That's the equivalent of a $5.5m free agent that they couldn't otherwise afford.

I'm not certain those ~$10m increases happen as that's two of the four years set for the owners to recover their losses from this past season. We're likely to see half that in cap increases for the four year period starting with this 2021/22 season.
The NFL and NFLPA have agreed that the 2021 salary capwill be no lower than $180 million, but will likely be lower than $185 million and that represents a big drop from the $198 million cap for the 2020 season.

Kobe Bryant asked the Lakers for a trade. Olajuwon is beloved in Houston, but many people forget he had battles with management, he was accused of faking an injury and wanted to be traded. It took a long, team flight to China to get him and the Rockets' GM together for them to resolved their differences and it paid off with championships.

IMHO, calling someone a petulant child or whiney little brat is unnecessary. It's an emotional statement made by fans who don't have all of the details and who fall into one or more of these categories:
  1. Disappointed in the way Watson has handled this issue with the cryptic tweets and silent treatment
  2. Watson wanting to hire the GM and HC is not his role or responsibility
  3. Signing a mega deal and asking for a trade six months later
  4. It's an opportunity to take gratuitous shots at a player you dislike and you want to chum the waters
If anyone falls in category 1, 2, 3 or any combination of the three, a public statement from Cal and Watson detailing how the breakdown in communication occurred will help clarify or repair the situation. Hearing the actual details and the context instead of relying on click bait articles, gossip, speculation and agenda pushers to form our opinions is pointless. For many, with clarity comes understanding or empathy. Time heals all wounds and winning cures all.

If you are in category 4, you will just double down on the criticism, subjective opinions and narratives that you have been repeating for four years. In other words, there is nothing Watson can do that will repair his reputation/image with #4

Or he could honor his contract and build a winner here.

Its a one year fix for the cap (aside from his own contract) and they'd get a talent infusion for their troubles ....
100% agree but Watson has to be 100% on board with the Texans and what they've done to get ready for the 2021 season. If there's any chance of deviation....then it's time to cut loses and move on.

You’re spot on and I remember when those guys wanted to be traded. The big difference is, it wasn’t shortly after signing a mega deal contract. I see if it was maybe after year 2 of that new contract.

My whole premise is, one you knew exactly what you were getting into. Two no other player in NFL history has ever had that type of control or say. Three using social media verses actually sitting down and talking to your boss who just gave you one of the highest paid contracts in NFL history. Finally just like you stated , stop basically hiding behind clues on Twitter, how about addressing your problems head on and tell everyone how you truly feels.

Good points. I will add another group who feels the signing the mega deal contract and wanting out six months later.

It absolutely is mutually assured destruction .... But because of the new CBA the team has most of the leverage and for the league , I think that's a good thing.
Funny thing about the mutually assured destruction angle is that the Texans will still earn profits because of NFL revenue sharing regardless of the product on the field.

Watson would lose money and career time with such a strategy.

Yep. None of this stuff is personal to me as a fan. I don't know Watson and do not claim to know anything about the man's personal life.

Where my perspective draws the line is signing a massive contract with an already dysfunctional team and then apparently demanding even more a few months later.

I'd be 100% with him if he was taking the Kirk Cousins route and betting on himself by playing out his last year and then playing year-to-year with franchise tag seasons. That's the type of commitment and long term vision that you just have to respect as a football fan.

Like it or not, he has alienated some fans. The cryptic messages, no big deal. Most people, myself included, believe that Cal McNair has handled the whole situation atrociously from the absolute beginning. Watson removing Houston and the Texans from his social media account(s), that was an immature response. That's the way I see it. Both parties look bad, IMO.

I don't care if he stays or goes because quite frankly my interest in the team in general is extremely low to begin with. I do think the team is better off with him than without him. That is as emotional as I am about Watson. My post was meant to point out the parallel between this situation and the Olajuwon situation. Maybe you did't hear as much of it as I did but tending bar in a sports bar in Houston I heard it from a lot of fans for weeks about how selfish they thought Hakeem was being.

Anyway, my question wasn't really directed at you but more for those that are actually upset with Watson's behavior. I'd like to know from people like TB, is there anything Watson can do or say to repair their perception him now.

Squash the nonsense by balling out as a Texans. Lead your team to a Super Bowl and stop with the immature cryptic messages on social media. Yes Cal is to blame in a lot of this nonsense. But at least he came out publicly and apologized for his actions.

Winning championships cures all!

In all seriousness, there's alot to this story that we don't know... and we may never know? If you don't like Watson for what he's doing, that's fine by me. But even before the Watson trade demands, I was NOT happy with the direction of the Texans, so I'm happy that Watson has come out and basically said the same thing. Because if Watson just played like a good soldier, nothing was going to change w/ this franchise. We needed this "come to Jesus" moment.

I hear you and understand your point. To be honest, I laughed when I saw what he did with his Twitter account. I have a friend who had a falling out with his millennial daughter. She wouldn't respond to phone calls, text messages or emails for a year. She even blocked him on her social media accounts. After a year, they reconciled. I guess that is how young people today handle their conflicts. I block/ignore you.

The funniest part of the story was when I asked him what did he do to have such a falling out with his daughter. He said for months, she would visit him to print flyers for her boyfriend's side business. She was printing so much that he was spending $100 a month in inkjet cartridges and paper. One day, he went to print and was out of ink. He called her up, yelled at her for not ever buying ink or paper and being a printing service for her idiot boyfriend. That led to him spending a year on her ignore/block list. LMAO.

I agree with you on the Davenport thing. It's why I was for trading for Tunsil. Protect DW4's blindside and see what he can do. He had a very good yr this yr, but he's not some kind of generational QB that Mahomes is. IMHO

He's a very good QB with the type of game that you cant win with at the NFL level. IMHO After 4 yrs under a cheap contract (A big mistake Cal made IMHO) the yrs that gave you the best chance to win a championship with DW4 in Houston has past. Time to rip off the bandaid under a new regime and move on. IMHO

I never thought I would have to put this many IMHO's in one post that I would ever make.

As far as the other QB's I've listed I've given my thoughts. Do you think if Caserio offered up DW4 to the Chargers or the Bengals that right now even with Burrow having a busted up knee they would trade for DW4 for Herbert/Burrow straight up? I dont.

You should give a listen to BYU OC/QB Aaron Roderick has to say about Zach being undisputed captain and "The" captain and had a C on his jersey from game 1 to game 12. Link is on Zach Wilson thread in College and Draft forum from 14:00 to 17:00.

Question is .... given the opportunity , would the Texans draft him ?

Plus if Cal lets this play out the Texans will suck next yr and in 2022 have the ability to pick a top QB. Then trade DW4 for as much as if they traded him tomorrow. In a way for the good of the NFL as a whole and for the Texans I hope Cal sticks to his guns and doesn't trade DW4.

How generational did Mahomes look without protection and a counter game plan? Guess what? That's what Watson has been dealing with since day 1. In regards to Watson trade value, his value is limited because of the no trade clause. If not for that no trade, his market value would be through the roof. You dont want to admit it, but Watson is better than good despite playing for a below avg play caller and having avg talent surrounding him.

We will just have to agree to disagree. His trade value shouldn't be limited by the NTC because if he wants to be traded then he will either have to accept the trade or sit his azz on Kirby next yr.

I hope you are right and another team feels the way you do and is willing to trade the farm to take on the headache/Diva.

One thing I know for certain......if Watson and Mahomes had switched teams from the get-go, the same exact results would've happed for both teams. Watson would've crapped the bed in his second SB just like Mahomes since he would've never been prepared to handle a defense that was as ready as the Bucs. If Watson and Mahomes switch spots just for second SB.....Watson has the better game simply b/c this is the type of defensive intrusion he's been playing against since arriving, only he would've had better coaching, running game, TE, and receivers to go with his ability to survive most shite storms.

All that aside, I think Watson had all the ability to win a SB....unfortunately, the Texans never had FO, scouts, coaching staff or the talent to do it. Watson has taken a massive twitter crap in the middle of the Texans bed and unfortunately there's no coming back from that. He needs to go to a new team and let the Caserio era begin with a bundle of picks and the clearing of a bad cap situation.
We don't know this, nor do we know DW4 would've brought the Chiefs back from 24-0. In fact I doubt he would have. Much less brought them back to win a SB. DW4's proven when times get tough he cuts and runs.

Agreed with the last paragraph of your post.

That's not completely factual. Specifically talking about the game, there's plenty of footage out there in which he brought his team back, took the lead. Only to watch the defense squander it away.

I'm at a weird spot in time with Houston sports. Now that Watt is gone, I'm looking for that "next man up", the next guy that will pick up the torch and run with it.

I was born in Houston in '67. It seems there was always someone in the world of professional sports that I could be proud of, someone that represented the city of Houston. As I get older, my interest in the world of sports has waned; and to be honest, I'm kind of sad about that. And it's the stuff that went on with the Astros, and now the Texans being in such disarray, it just pushes me further away.

I'd love it if Watson would just make a simple statement that he's ready to win a championship for Houston. That would help get me interested again. But honestly, I don't think that's going to happen. If he does play for the Texans again, it won't be because he wants the long suffering Houstonians to be in the spotlight for something good for a change. It will be because he feels like he has to.

I read so many articles thru out the day I couldn't remember, where I read it. Spent last 30 minutes searching history to no avail. Sorry, but I did read it somewhere. First and foremost Culley was a boardroom roundtable decision, you know that. The comments basically said Cal was instrumental in directing Nick he wanted to make a culture change with the new head coach(trying to appease DW4?).

I don't understand people who feel this way. This Astros championship brought me great joy. How can you let the DW4 act make you not want to watch sports?

The BLM stuff has me watching less sports. Canceled my NBA league pass.

The FO should make having the #2 pick the foundation of any trade request. Period.
Go get or currently have the #2 pick and we‘ll talk.
If CAR wants Watson, great. 8th pick isn’t going to work though. Go get #2.
If they do that then they put all the power in the Jets hands whether they are trading with Texans or another team for that #2 pick. Texans are playing it right, keep saying you're not interested, and you may really not be interested, all the while keep letting the media stir things and letting other teams get in a bidding war. Key thing that the Texans have to remember is that they don't have to do any deal at all. Their not in a championship window like LA was when they traded Goff so they can afford to take their time.

In some ways it reminds me of the back to back 100 loss seasons Astro's had. People thought they were making all the wrong moves and calling for heads then to. Now whether it will work out long term for Texans like it did the Astros remains to be seen.

I agree That they should let a bidding war explode for him but the FO should still make #2 pick their primary demand.

The Astros stuff was overblown because they beat out the big market teams of Yankees and Dodgers to do it. Listen to all the talking heads screaming bloody murder and they are all self proclaimed New York or LA fans. Every team in every sport is "cheating" on some level or another and if you really think other teams aren't using modern technology to record things then I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you. The Astro championship win came in a year when Houston needed it most and if the rest of the country doesn't like it well to bad for them.

As far as the Texans go I try to look at the team overall and really I like what I see. Yeah we have unproven people at pretty much all positions but even the all time greats were unproven at one point. I like the moves Caserio has made and I feel for the first time in years that we have a real leader in the GM spot. Culley is an odd hire I admit but I also cheer for the underdog enough to be happy a guy that has reached for the brass ring for 27 years finally got it and yes I fully believe that being black played a part in holding him back when he was in the prime of his career and then his age did later. It helps that I like most of the staff that is around him, we finally have a real Oline coach and I'm eager to see what Lovie comes up with for the defense.

As far as the player's go if you get good people in the front office and on the coaching staff then getting good players will take care of itself.

People call me a homer and maybe I am but I just don't see the reason to watch, read about or even talk about a team if I think there is no hope and its all doom and gloom. If I wanted that I'd turn on the news for 15 minutes, that would give me all the doom and gloom I need and then some.

I get what you are saying and in private I agree Texans should be saying to themselves that #2 is the goal. I just don't think they should advertise that to other teams beyond 'Well thats a pretty nice package but the Jets can offer the #2 overall so we'll have to compare to that and get back to you." That's if, and only if, they truly do start shopping and I don't see that till late April early May at the soonest.
