Deshaun Watson... are we giving him a pass?

I was speaking of your statement that the O line hasn't been addressed in 5 years.

You lost all and any possible credibility you had or may have had with that one comment
I guess I'm confused. Are you saying the O line is much better than in previous years?

To you capologists, what if Caserio negotiated with Watson to move some of his back end money on to next year's cap since it's basically a rebuild year?

Is something like that realistic?
Next year they are already 18 million in the hole WITHOUT Watson.
I should have been more detailed in my previous post.
I was thinking about them making enough cuts to get below the cap and accelerating some of DWs salary on to next year's cap.

I didn't realize they were quite so much over it at the time of my question though

As it currently stands with Watson on the roster they are $21,008,826 over the cap.

His cap hit for 21 is $15,940,000 , that includes his salary of $10,540,000 and the prorated signing bonus money of $5,400,000.

There's $21,600,000 in dead money if you trade him pre June 1 which is an additional $5,660,000 more than his cap hit this year.

They'd be $26,668,826 Over the cap after trading Watson prior to June 1.

Post June 1 trade costs you $5,400,000 against the 2021 cap and the remaining $16,200,000 against the 2022 cap.

They'd be $10,468,826 over the cap after trading Watson After June 1 but would have the $16,200,000 against the 2022 cap.

I don't think anyone would want that figure against the 22 cap .... but it would be very difficult to clear enough space to make it a pre June 1 trade , being forced to clear that $26,668,826 plus whatever it took to fill out the roster.

At that $26,668,826 figure , you could cut / trade Watt and McKinney and still be $2,168,826 Over the cap , having to make further cuts to fill out the roster. Add Martin to the list of cuts and you have created a grand total of $4,081,174 in cap space.

Funny fact - The Texans spent the 6th most on player salary for the 2020 season at $211,553,068 ..... That's $52,888,267 per win.

Let's be honest here...

  • Majority of us want Jack Easterby gone!
  • Majority of us think Cal is doing a horrible job!
  • Majority of us aren't happy with the Caserio hire... not because he may be a bad GM, but it's a sign that Cal is staying the course.
If Deshaun just accepted it and played a good soldier, then nothing would change. We should be happy DW is expressing his frustration, this is probably the only way Cal will make serious changes.

Think you are speaking for yourself there.

I don't care about Easterby because I think his role is overblown.

I like the job Cal is doing.

I'm pretty happy with the hire and looking through the Caserio thread lots of others are to or at least admitting his resume looks good so he deserves the benefit of the doubt. Also there is no sign at all Cal is "staying the course" despite the narrative OB did NOT do things the Patriot way. He did things the OB way.

I really think the Easterby angel is overplayed.

The job Cal's doing ? .... Jury's still out. He did get the guy he wanted even if it took him two years to do it. Now lets see if he gets out of the way and let the football people do their thing.

Caserio hiring , I don't think that's a sign of staying the course. I'm concerned they do a patch job on this roster too ... but when you look at the cap situation and lack of draft picks , it just doesn't make a whole lot of sense. There's just too many holes to fill.
They almost have to eat a down year to clean up the cap. It is that bad.

I stand corrected. I didn't know some were happy with the direction of the Texans.

I'm more in wait and see mode .... lets see who they bring in as HC and the staff that guy is able to put together and maybe more importantly , how Caserio handles the cap situation.

Again , I really think the Easterby angle is overhyped , just something for the media to generate clicks. Him being here or not does not affect the product on the field.

That's fair.

Ever since Cal took over... Gaine was fired, gave too much power to BOB, which led to a bunch of bad contracts and trades. This is why I think Cal is off to a bad start. Giving BOB GM powers, and botching the 2019 hiring of Caserio, ended up being critical mistakes on Cal's part.

Again , I really think the Easterby angle is overhyped , just something for the media to generate clicks. Him being here or not does not affect the product on the field.
Whether it's overhyped or not, the fans are ONLY getting the story the media is feeding. True or false, the reports coming out is the players don't like Easterby. And just like you said, "Him being here or not does not affect the product on the field." Then why keep him around? What value is he providing to the team if he's not affecting the product on the field? If anything, he's giving a negative aspect of the team.

Listening to the press conference and Easterby role wasn't overplayed.
Listening as well. I don't think Easterby is going anywhere, but I also think his imaginary wings are going to be clipped hard by Caserio. New GM doesn't want the clown being an albatross around his neck, but he also probably doesn't want to capitulate to the mob.

And I don't think Watson is going anywhere. They are going to try to make him happy.

At least that's my take from what I'm hearing.

Not what I hear. Easterby is a "special" person to Nick. Religious cult runs deep in this organization

Two things:

1. Why is Watson vacationing during a global pandemic?

2. Why is Watson vacationing when he knows the team is set to hire a GM and HC. If he wanted to be part of the process maybe he should have hung around Houston a couple more weeks.

I am not defending Cal or anyone else with the Texans. It is their fault they told Watson he could be part of it.

I am just saying if you want to be part of something you don’t take a vacation in the week we expect a decision to be made.

How would Watson know what Cal was thinking? For all we know, Watson went on vacation thinking they had a bunch of interviews to do, maybe even waiting until after the playoffs before making a decision.

Watson is a healthy, young man. He's a grown man. Not everybody is going to hide in their basement from a virus that is dangerous (primarily) to the elderly and/or unhealthy people.

Not to mention he doesn't vacation like you and me. He took a private jet wherever he wanted to go

We need to, like you said, wait & see what Caserio does with the cap, with the draft, with the HC

& we have to wait & see if Cal steps back & let Caserio do what he was hired to do. That's the thing for me.

Cal stated months back that Easterby would not be involved in the football aspect of the franchise .... he'd go back to some "administrative" role , whatever that is , he won't have a say in any football related issues.

People trying to lay blame on him for the DHop trade .... That's on Janice for forcing the mandate on OB and on OB for not getting a good return. If he played any role in that it was probably OB asking him what he thought .... and I doubt it would have mattered how he responded.

As for why they keep him around .... I have no idea.

Watson is amazing, great to watch, a brilliant passer, escape artist, a leader, and by all accounts a wonderful person. He's getting better every game. The downside is that he plays a brand of sandlot football that is very dangerous in the NFL. It worries me.

We all knew the selection for GM was coming very soon. We needed that to get the HC. We knew. He knew. That’s why I don’t understand the rush to run to Cabo and then complain about not being consulted were you weren’t in town.

It’s just as important to remember it’s not only about getting the virus - it’s about spreading it. You never know who you come in contact with.

Idk how y’all can say the jury is still out on the dude the promoted OBrien and single handily caused this entire train wreck.
I wonder if someone can find out if O'Brien is still collecting a check from the Texans.

I'm betting Cal wanted him gone years ago, but didn't want to pay him & somehow the crap we endured the last two years gave him an out.

Now, it looks like he's aligning the front office to a more traditional model.

I think we're only now seeing Cal's vision.

Last 4 years we’ve had different GMs. They are who they are. They prove it every year. Why try to fool yourself?

Texans vision under the McNair’s has been incompetency after incompetency. I’ll believe when they give me a reason to believe otherwise. We’re one of the worst run franchises in the league.

Watson should have known there were 5, 6 GM jobs open and the Texans have had 4 months to put a plan together and needed to get this done ASAP when the season ended. Nah, jetting off to Cabo needed to be done first.
