The Titans had signed Fitzpatrick to a two year deal in 2013. They cut him at the end of that season. We paid him more than he would have made that 2nd year to be our QB.

& Fitz was good for our team in 2014. That’s not to say he was good in 2014. He was good for our team.

But instead of focusing his attention on more pressing concerns, we cut Fitz, eating dead money, to sign Hoyer.

That decision by O’Brien irked me. Had Hoyer held down the QB spot for a couple of years I’d have got over it. But Hoyer was benched at halftime game 1. & we went through Mallet & Oswilder because Tj Yates, Case Keenum, & Fitz weren’t good enough.

That told me right there, BO’b couldn’t identify a QB if the GOAT was sitting right in front of him.

Honestly Fitzy may have run OB's offense better than anyone else ....

I didn't think it made much sense to cut him either , especially for someone like Hoyerable.

Would have been nice to have Fitz around for Watson to sit behind for all or part of a season before throwing him to the wolves. He's a quality veteran and a smart guy .... Watson would have benefited tremendously from that.

The Jags may be attractive - they have a ton of draft capital to any new HC can make this team truly his own. And they still play better than a lot of people thought and they have a talented young QB, that doesn't make many mistakes and several other good young players.

I still think a team with a franchise QB and LT in place is more attractive for a new coach, but I can totally see some finding the options, the Jags offer, intriguing.

Oh and I wouldn't call the Jets intriguing at all - Darnold may very well be out of the league in a couple of years....

The Watt marketing aspect as relates to what he has done for Houston (hurricane Harvey, etc) is an issue when considering releasing him. What I think is a possible out for both Watt and the Texans.............present the situation as an agreed positive for Watt.............as a sign and trade him (or release him so that he can negotiate with another team) to a team close to his wife or to join his brothers..............all could understand such a move.............no face would be lost on either side.

You make good points tk. Still I was willing to give BO'b the benefit of the doubt early on. Winning in spite of misgivings did that for me. I know our division has been seen as one of the weakest in the NFL but still winning our division as much as we did is not easy. In that regard I overlooked issues early on.

Lovie is not my top candidate by a long shot but he did coach the Bears to a Super Bowl and he did so with an average talent team and weak Qb help. Also he is not to blame for losing most of his assistant coaches from that Super Bowl team. He did more with less in Chicago than just about any other head coach could have done. I realize he sucked in Tampa Bay but so did a lot of head coaches with that franchise.

Besides that our team should be proactive in at least giving minorities a fair shot at the head coaching job. I am sure they can come up with more minorities to interview other than Eric Bienemy.

Let's be honest, Hoodie is the GM and HC. So, if another GM and HC came in from NE it might or might not be good. McDaniel is a good OC but is he HC material? Plus, fact is I am 99% sure he is still in NE because he was told he is the HC in "X" years as Hoodie is getting up there and I think he will be the GM in a year or two... but not the HC anymore. Then again he could just leave and retire completely.

I question Rivers with 4 TDs and 5 INTs, but can't argue with your statistical logic after five games. I'll get back to you at the midway point and end of the season.
 
Titans and Bills tonight have two OCs who have been mentioned as potential HC candidates. Is anyone watching their offenses tonight?

Edit: Leslie Frazier, the Bills' DC has also been mentioned. So, three HC candidates are coaching tonight.

I would put Watson ahead of Jackson, Rivers and Garoppolo when healthy.

Why? Watson took his team all the to the Divisional Round with Bill “I am the master of running it up the middle for no gain” O’Brein as head coach.

He didn’t have Harbaugh design a team to his strengths. He doesn’t have Shanahan who is a premier talent on the offensive side of the ball. He doesn’t have Reid, Belicheck, Payton, McDaniels, or Arians or any head coach who smart enough to do anything else but call running plays up the middle.

He has had Bill “I run such a complex system I go through QBs like hand sanitizer in 2020” O’Brein.

And one OC who is so green that last week before last he was demoted to being the water boy.

And yet - Watson has still had success throwing. Success running. Success in the playoffs.

He ain’t top 5, but he is somewhere in the 5-8.

Seriously - how many times last year did we say - “Great playcalling Bill” or “Great game plan Bill”. ?

Watson is in the same situation as Manning was in with Mora.

If you were Bruce Arians. Going into 2020. If Watson was a free agent like Brady.

What would he have done? Or Indy with Rivers? Or Pittsburgh with Roethlisberger coming off injuries? Or Peyton with Brees on his last year?

Could you imagine Watson in NO with Kamara and Thomas?

Seeing I keep seeing it said. McDaniel is not coming. NE promised him the HC position when Hoodie steps down to GM only (I think he may do it) or just flat retires. And they probably gave him a time frame too.

Meaning he will not be coming to Houston unless you give him a contract with a whole lot of zeros in it garranted. Now, would a NE GM or HC be bad? We have no idea. Hoodie is the FULL coaching staff and GM. How much input do the coaches have? Is that system McDaniel or Hoodie on offense? The D is at the least 1/2 Hoodie's as he was a DC or D assistant prior to being a HC.

Watson would not fit in NO system as it stands. Arians signed the best QB maybe ever. No idea if he would have been interested in Watson. He would have preferred to try to work with Winston most likely. And so on. Watson won games and division titles. But, don't think OB was 100% a fool. He won a division title with Brock and a few scubs. Meaning his play calling declined seeing if you can make a plan for Brock to win that is impressive.

Arians is on record that if the Texans didn’t move up to 12 to take Watson, he would have selected him with the Cardinals’ 13th pick.

OB took Hoyer and Osweiler to the playoffs and Osweiler to the division round. So Watson had the same level of success as the Blunder of Oz with arguably better talent around him. Make of that what you will.
 
Several people are saying that no top candidate wants to come here because we have no draft or cap space but that is extremely short sighted. Yeah we don’t have those things next year but nobody in their right mind thinks that a new HC can come in and win a championship with this team within 3 years so it’s not like a new HC has to produce immediate results.

They will have their full range of picks in 2022 plus an extra 4th round. Likewise some tough choices will have to be made cap wise but that was going to happen no matter who was making the decisions. On top of all that the Texans have shown they are very forgiving, especially for an NFL team, and willing to give a HC a lot of time to produce results.

Also there is that whole Texas having no income tax so what they make is what they take home. So yeah there are a lot of reasons even outside the players we have for why candidates would want to come here.
 
Also yeah this idea they won’t come because there are problems. Well no ****, name me a team that didn’t just fire their HC, and in Texans case GM as well, that doesn’t have problems. Hell if there weren’t problems then there wouldn’t be a job opening. Saying a future HC won’t come here because the team has problems is like saying a doctor won’t see patients because they are sick.

I think every fan in Houston would understand if the Texans moved Watt to Pittsburgh (Brothers), Chicago (Wife), or Green Bay (Home State) with the promise that he'd be brought back to officially retire as a Texans great....then enter the HoF as a Texan.
 
We had a top notch defense when O’Brien supposedly took the Texans to the playoffs with Hoyer and Brock. A fact that continues to escape ones mind around here. Here’s another fact that gets swept underneath the rug. The Texans were playing in the worst division in football during that time as well.

OB’s year with Brock. Yes the run heavy and rely on the defense to win games. The year, as every year until recently we played weak division opponents to win a division title with a 9-7 record. OBs entire record is beating division opponents, beating teams with losing records, and losing to winning record teams and play off teams.

OB didn’t make a game plan for Brock. It was run the ball. Hope the defense keeps us in the game. That’s not impressive.

OB didn’t have a declining play calling ability. His game plan is to run heavy. His play calling sucked with in the beginning just as much as it did this year.

Am I the only person that remembers Lamar Miller up the middle? When the question was “Why is he running Lamar Miller as a power back when he isn’t that?”

And yes. OB is a fool.

The division was crap those years. The worst in the NFL. The only reason the Texans were in the divisional round was because the Raiders’ QB Carr broke his leg right before the season ended. The team with Carr who beat us in the regular season.

Oz has a much better defense. His line still had Duane Brown.

Its not a matter of twilight zone its a matter of double standards that gets to me. When the team went to the playoffs before it was because the AFCS was horrible and the defense and Oline so amazing and OB had nothing to do with it. When they did it with Watson it was because Watson is so amazing and had done it with no defense and no Oline and OB was destroying the team. Here's the thing that same amazing defense was still there for the most part Watson's first two years and they couldn't stop crap. That amazing Oline was not dismantled by OB and they had Devlin screwing them up as a coach just like the current Oline does. As much as "OB defenders" are accused of twisting things around "OB haters" are just as bad. When the team lost it was because of OB and when they won it was despite him. Team wins and loses as a team, OB made bone headed moves, more than his share, but so did the players, including Watson, and he did get this team further than it had ever gone before.

He couldn't take us where we wanted to go and he should have been fired long before he was but lets not rewrite history and say everyone wanted him fired the same day he was hired and everyone felt the team was going nowhere with him those first 3 or 4 years. I remember back when Osweiler was brought in and the main theme around here was if he could get to the playoffs with a guy like Hoyer then with a real QB, which most of us thought the Blunder of Oz was at the time, we can make a real run at a championship. Hindsight and revisionist history are strong around this place.

For me this is no longer about BOB. He's history now, this is about finding out if the 160 million dollar man can actually play up to the level he's getting paid.

Watson was already a year too late.

DW4 has the propensity to make some fantastic unbelievable outstanding plays. And occasionally he has a game where he plays lights out. This is what undoubtedly excites the fan base. Unfortunately DW4 overall makes as many bad throws as he does good ones. Until he can reverse this pattern things will not change.

Exactly, OB didn’t want BO from the jump. Therefore, he really didn’t try to coach him up. That’s one of the reasons why I viewed him as being petty.

Call me guilty of hindsight, but I am not laying out any revisionist history. I have been an OB hater, OB defender, a Watson Hater, and a Watson defender.

The O line was so terrible we had to give up two first round picks for a LT.

We were excited about Oz because of the same reason Elway was trying to resign him. We had an expectation we were getting the QB that beat the Patriots in the regular season. No one knew how bad Oz was or how he wouldn’t mesh with OB. It would have helped if they would have met with him in person.

Hindsight is always 2020. And looking back at past mistakes helps us not make the same mistake twice.

Carr didn’t make plays to offset his limitations. He gave us no chance to win.

We’re not winning a game if Watson has a bad day. He has no, & has never had a run game to move the ball & definitely not score the ball. He doesn’t have a top 5 defense to bail him out, score, or win a game with only 47 yards of offense.

Watson ain’t Mahomes, you’re right about that. But he’s not in the same category as Carr.
