Hughes is the guy that recommended the Bill O'Brien hiring to Bob McNair. Anybody else see a pattern of behavior that has been very proficient in producing average and ordinary. Cal says he won't hire a GM or HC until after the season. IMO hiring a GM now allows that person plenty of time to evaluate the team and system to make arrangements to clean house and get a good head start on finding the people he wants to bring in. Getting a head start on everyone else. AN OPPORTUNITY MISSED! Cal let me save you some time and money, call Eliot Wolf and then get out of his way.

Why? The superstar QB should have a say in who the next guy is. Not the final word, but his input should matter, even it’s only a little bit.

When I hear Bieniemy I wonder, did Bieniemy make Mahomes or did Mahomes make Bieniemy? IMO I think this is a LaDainian Tomlinson and Dennis Francione situation. Francione rode Tomilson to HC stints at Alabama and Texas A&M before getting fired from both after short stints only to fade away thereafter. Tomlinson went on to the NFL Hall of Fame.

If I was going to hire a consultant to find a new HC it would be Urban Meyer. Meyer always had one of the very best staffs wherever he went. Meyer refused to hire any of his friends. He always wanted to hire the very best teachers to be his coaches and his staff. Urban was always trying to achieve excellence, especially with his coaching staff.
Andy Reid has a similar approach to hiring coaches that are good teachers. With the limited contact and the complexity of the NFL, I think this is a very important trait for the new HC. Here is Andy Reid on his approach:
“I look for good teachers and good people, and so normally that’s a foundation for a good head coach down the road,” Reid says. “Normally, good teachers and good people are decent leaders, so they can do all that stuff. They can communicate, they’re good with others, all of that.”
"And the other upshot of hiring good teachers, as Reid sees it, is that they’re never done learning. He knows that, because that’s how he was.
Reid was an English major at BYU, and he learned the NFL at the foot of a guy, in Holmgren, who actually was a high school history teacher at the outset of his career, and gave Reid his de facto masters in pro football."

Good, fair question. If you look at just Super Bowls wins or appearances. John Harbaugh, Doug Pederson and Ron Rivera.
In his 3rd year, Sean McDermott has the Bills playing at a high level. I think Matt Nagy has a winning record with the Bears and then you have other coaches who have success as coordinators who failed as HCs, but are respected coordinators like Steve Spagnuolo, Pat Shurmur and Todd Bowles.
My point about teachers is under O'Brien we have too many young players who end up in the dog house, don't improve or regress.
Or Reid offers to promote Kafka to OC in KC..

Understood, Cal hired same consultant his dad did to get O'Brien, Jed Hughes. TBC I was just offering up my opinion which clearly does not agree with the Texans doing the same thing over again and expecting better results. I take it you don't care for my opinion.

Urban Myer... while he can't be worse than Hughes, I don't think I would go that route.
Ron Wolfe, Ozzie Newsome, Bill Pollian, Bill Parcells, Jimmy Johnson... those are the guys I'd be talking to.

I have no idea and I don't know if it has to be one or the other. A bigger question to me is, how much of that offense is Andy Reid. But the KC offense is great and not just because of Mahomes. There are constantly receivers open it has a great flow and you rarely scratch your head about the playcalling. The question just is: is Bienemy just great at installing Reids gameplan and manage the offense, or is he a leader, that can develope his own gamplan and lead his coordinators and motivate his team?
But then again this question arises with every coordinator without HC-experience. The question is: is this a risk this team should be willing to take? Or should we hire a guy like Norv Turner (random ex HC). Personally I like to take a chance of a high upside well respected coordinator - I just hope that the people, that decide if a person is fit for the job, actually know what they are doing.

Agree, I think Reid like Belichick and Saban have a notebook for each of their coaches on how to run their system. I keep hearing Bieniemy is the next great coach. I think this is because he's the latest winning Super Bowl coordinator. If he was everything they're making him to be this year why did 3 teams pass on him after he interviewed with them last year? Another thing at the end of the season there will be 4, 5 or more teams looking for Head Coaches and most will be more attractive than the Houston situation. I suspect Bieniemy will be a Head Coach somewhere other than Houston

In another thread I brought up how Mike Zimmer didn’t interview well and was passed up for multiple HC jobs. Bieniemy could be the same way.
Bieniemy and Roman should be at the top of the list.
I don’t see other teams being any more attractive than us. If anything it is pretty even.
Jets, Falcons, Jags, Broncos, and Detroit and maybe someone else out there will have openings.
The Jets are the only other team that has a young QB to build around. Even then, Watson has proven he is top tier in the NFL. That is very attractive.
The problem with us is we don’t have any working capital with draft picks and we need to rework our salary cap situation.
I'm not really arguing your point but the 1 thing I think the Texans have going for them is that historically they have given their candidate at least 5 years to succeed.
They have been very patient with every coach we have ever had. Even when the divisional round in the playoffs is the furthest any of them have gotten.

I agree with everything you wrote. The one coach I can think of who will likely be available and is a known to have all abilities you mentioned is Jim Harbaugh.
Good chance Harbaugh is let go this year. He really had no chance at Michigan, Buckeyes are a run away train in the Big 10 and no program can come close to matching them on regional and national recruiting.
He nearly won a SB with Kaepernick as QB so that answers if he will flex his offense to the talents of his QB. He likes a power based run scheme which fits the players we are developing on the O-line. He created the best program in the PAC 12 from a team that had been a doormat forever. He has won everywhere he has coached and has extensive NFL experience as a player and head coach. He has shown ability to motivate and get results from lesser talented defensive players and his teams are always well disciplined. IMO, he will succeed again in the NFL, wouldn't mind it being with the Texans. Surprised his name hasn't been brought up, if it was I missed it.

I hope they at least call him to see in there’s any interest. He may want to beat his brother since both of them would be in the AFC.

By all reports JIM Harbaugh appears to have a problem getting along with others. Why they were ready for him to go in SF. Apparently he has now wore out his welcome at Michigan. I was once a BIG Harbaugh fan and wanted Texans to hire him before SF did. I think it is a bad idea now.

There's too many pages of post at this time for me to look and see if anybody has mentioned the coach I have in mind. Has anybody mentioned former head coach Lovie Smith as a candidate for a head coaching job again? I think he deserves another shot as an NFL head coach.

The first three or so years of BO'b I was not terribly displeased with the job he had done. I felt that he was hamstrung at the Qb position and could not find a Qb that he could work with which made me more forgiving. So at that time I would not have thought that particular consultant did that bad a job in helping to hire him. I know a lot of us were willing to give him the benefit of the doubt at that time. After all has been said and done I am not all that into Cal hiring the same consultant.

from the interview I got that at the end of this season if it goes as he thinks, he wants to bring the players back.

I’ve been on the Bieniemy bandwagon and also on the anti-New England staff train...but here’s a thought....
Any chance we could make a run at Sean Payton? Never occurred to me till I turned this game on for a minute. It would make sense he’s won a Super Bowl, has experience yet still young and an offensive minded players coach that helps QB play.
He could probably handle operations as a gm as well if that is what it took to get him. Even if he wasn’t, he could recruit well I think
Brees leaving sooner than later plus all of the Michael Thomas drama may help our case?
He has commented on being impressed with our players in the past.

McNair announcing new GM and HC makes me think those will want to hire their own guys although current staff could possibly be interviewed.
