Now that Mahomes new contract has been picked through and examined, the Texans organization should be breathing a sigh of relief.

Yeah, I'd have to agree here which is bothersome if you aren't a Chiefs fan. I was hoping that his contract would blow their cap space up. This is actually very disappointing. How they made that work is simple.
I don't think his agent did a very good job at all , unless they were purposely giving the team a break - leaving money on the table to bring in more talent around him.
He wont see those $60m seasons before his deal is reworked ...
That would make it seem like he can't be and that it's his fault. He could be if his coach and GM were better. In even more simpler terms, he doesn’t deserve that much money, because he isn’t nearly as good as Mahomes.
Bro I’ve been stop entertaining that dude. Watson is darn good and he will get paid. That would make it seem like he can't be and that it's his fault. He could be if his coach and GM were better.
Yes, but how much? Where do we cap it at?Bro I’ve been stop entertaining that dude. Watson is darn good and he will get paid.
I believe they will probably follow the same format but with a much shorter contract extension. Rumor right now is 3 years in which will probably start in 2022 or 2023.Yes, but how much? Where do we cap it at?
@Corrosion broke down these numbers earlier for Mahomes new contract.
"He was given $10m up front which is prorated over the next two seasons making his $5.3m cap hit for 2020 $10.3m and his ~$17m cap hit for 2021 22m .... then the new contract starts in 2022 with a cap hit of $29m in the first year.
It doesn't get costly for the Chiefs until the 2023 season which is at $40m."
How do you think we get Watson to do something similar with his and how should we structure it?
Correct. Watson can't be as good as Mahomes, because he nearly as skilled or as talented at football as Mahomes is. It doesn't matter who Watson's coach or GM is.That would make it seem like he can't be and that it's his fault. He could be if his coach and GM were better.
That is something similar that I could hope for in order to keep Watson and have a favorable salary cap to work with as well.I believe they will probably follow the same format but with a much shorter contract extension. Rumor right now is 3 years in which will probably start in 2022 or 2023.
If Watson is under contract through 2021, how does a new contract begin 2023?I believe they will probably follow the same format but with a much shorter contract extension. Rumor right now is 3 years in which will probably start in 2022 or 2023.

$5M, $24M, $31MIf the Texans could get Watson for similar cap hits over the next three years , I don't think any of us would be complaining ...
Watson will deliver the desired results when the Texans can assemble the rest of the pieces to their puzzle. GM, HC and his staff are pieces as well. Mahomes was "snatched up" by the right organization at the right time. Brady "landed" with the right organization at the right time.Correct. Watson can't be as good as Mahomes, because he nearly as skilled or as talented at football as Mahomes is. It doesn't matter who Watson's coach or GM is.
That doesn't mean Watson can't be a good QB in this league for many years to come. You all wan't so badly for Watson to be some elite once in a generation player, and he's just not. Nor does he need to be for this team to be successful. All these unrealistic expectations and baseless hyperbole are on you delusional homer fans.
Watson is slated to make 4.408M dollars this season. That entire amount also represents the cap hit. His 2021 option would cost the Texans 17.540M with a matching hit on the cap.$5M, $24M, $31M
I think that’s pretty expensive. Going rate & all that, but...
looking at sportrac they can cut him free & clear after the 2024 season.

I think the signing bonus has to be spread out evenly, 5 years at most. You can’t do 7 one year 3 the next & be done with it.2020: 4,408,217 + 7,000,000 (Signing Bonus 1)
2021: 17,504,000 + 3,000,000 (Signing Bonus 2)
looks to me like Mahomes contract was different from Watson’s with an $885K base & $2.5M bonus. The signing bonus money is prorated over the last two years of the rookie deal that would have been 5 and 17 in 2020 and 2021
True, still $24M & $31M is a big chunk of the cap. At $240M cap, year two is 10% of the cap. Those figures are pretty team friendly relative to other top tier QB's over the next 3 seasons.
Look at the numbers of some of the other top paid guys at the position - They are all well north of these figures currently - Not three years from now.True, still $24M & $31M is a big chunk of the cap. At $240M cap, year two is 10% of the cap.
is the salary cap $240M?
Yeah, this is completely unfair.Look at the numbers of some of the other top paid guys at the position - They are all well north of these figures currently - Not three years from now.
Here's the top 10 for this coming season -
Now tell me you wouldn't be content with cap hit of 10 , 22 and 29 over the next three years.
- 1. Seahawks QB Russell Wilson: $35 million
- 2. Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger: $34 million
- 3.Packers QB Aaron Rodgers: $33.5 million
- 3. Rams QB Jared Goff: $33.5 million
- 5. Eagles QB Carson Wentz: $32 million
- 6. Falcons QB Matt Ryan: $30 million
- 7. Vikings QB Kirk Cousins: $28 million
- 8. Colts QB Jacoby Brissett: $27.98 million
- 9. 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo: $27.5 million
- 10. Lions QB Matthew Stafford: $27 million
I don't see it so much as unfair ... but stupid , especially paying unproven or lower tier QB's so much.Yeah, this is completely unfair.
I don't even see why they are allowed to get away with this.
I agreed with you the first time. I agree with you still.Look at the numbers of some of the other top paid guys at the position - They are all well north of these figures currently

They're taking a $27.98m hit on Brissett, AND they signed Rivers?

Agreed.

Where do these figures come from? They don't seem to jive with either OTC or SpotracLook at the numbers of some of the other top paid guys at the position - They are all well north of these figures currently - Not three years from now.

Was a google search for QB cap hits ... may not be totally accurate.Where do these figures come from? They don't seem to jive with either OTC or Spotrac
Prescott will make $31.5 million on the exclusive tag, unless he signs an extension by 7/15.Was a google search for QB cap hits ... may not be totally accurate.
I was being facetious.I don't see it so much as unfair ... but stupid , especially paying unproven or lower tier QB's so much.
Wentz , Goff and Brissett being in the top ten and even Teddy Bridgewater is 24m+ this season.
I was listening to a Mahomes interview on the radio and his point in regards to the structure.....it offers him and the team plenty of wiggle room to re-work a paticular season to help keep the team relevant around him. I really enjoyed hearing this since it was apparent that it's all about winning for Mahomes.......like Mr Brady.I was being facetious.
I was just really hopeful that Mahomes would end up with a $35M per year contract with his talent level. That team has so many weapons all over the place, so I'd like to see some holes pop up at some key positions soon. I hope to at least.

Spot on here. He’s indeed a beast. Yes he has areas in his game that need ironing out. That will come in time because the kid is a student of the game and he’s hungry for success.
EDIT: If that video isn't an example of once in generation talent, I don't what is.
I'm not a Chiefs fan .... not by any stretch of the imagination , but it's hard not to be envious of their situation. You enjoyed hearing this?

I don't like the Chiefs or Mahomes.I'm not a Chiefs fan .... not by any stretch of the imagination , but it's hard not to be envious of their situation.
They have a great coach / OC and arguably the best QB in the game.
Texans fans have a terrible coach / OC and really don't know what they have at QB - a great QB or an average one who makes a few plays off script ?
I don't like the Chiefs or Mahomes.
They have a loaded team, and have destroyed the Houston Texans franchise badly.
No way am I happy for them.
I'm a fan....and I've always liked when a player puts the teams overall success first. What they may lose in the contract will more than be made up through other financial avenues such as, endorsements, business ownership, etc. Just put winning first and the rest will fall into place. You enjoyed hearing this?

You are a guy that doesn't want political crap thrown all over the league though, and Pat Mahomes is now one of those guys who majorly does that now. It was reported that once the league saw that Mahomes was part of that commercial that the players made themselves that they decided to get involved with all of those political stuff that the NFL claimed they were against doing the past 4 years. Mahomes is now a big part of the problem that will make the league controversial. My guess is that you haven't heard that yet. That's why my attitude towards Mahomes has changed. You could make the same video for Josh Allen.

Shanahan passed on Mahomes and Watson.Just another difference between a competent org and an incompetent org.
Imagine if the previous regime wasn't so inept Lil Shanny would be the HC and Mahomes would be his QB.
Lunch is the GM and he makes the personnel decisions. Plus Lynch had just traded for Jimmy G.Shanahan passed on Mahomes and Watson.
Garopollo was traded to the Niners on the 2017 trade deadline. 6 months after the draft. If Shanahan had wanted Mahomes (or Watson or Trubisky) Lynch would have drafted them. I would prefer Shanahan over O'Brien. Don't get me wrong. Just saying your dream narrative is off.Lunch is the GM and he makes the personnel decisions. Plus Lynch had just traded for Jimmy G.

If hindsight is 20/20. When assumptions and opinions are formed on totally wrong information, does that make faulty assumptions at 20/15 even better than hindsight?Garopollo was traded to the Niners on the 2017 trade deadline. 6 months after the draft. I've been drinking too much to respond to this post.If hindsight is 20/20. When assumptions and opinions are formed on totally wrong information, does that make faulty assumptions at 20/15 even better than hindsight?
