NFL Random Thought of the Day

I've repeatedly have questioned how the NFL can proceed in a realistically safe manner with hopes of completing a season, even with fanless stadiums.................what will be the regimen of testing (something which does not ensure real time day-to-day valid usable information).............identifying positives (with 1/3 false negatives).................what to do after a player (especially a starting QB) tests positive (quarantine only that player...........or the whole team...............or include the opposing team).

The NFL has said that they intend to present the "COVID rules" prior to TC. This is going to be very interesting to follow. As things stand now, it would be difficult for me not to be skeptical concerning the possibility of a successful 2020 NFL season. Only time will tell

Or we could stop acting like this thing is an automatic death sentence and get on with our lives. How are Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell BTW? Are they still alive?

Thank you for your productive input.

Why don't you ask me about healthy as a horse Tony Boselli who continued to routinely play rounds of golf in close contact with a group of friends, and after a week of feeling ill with a low fever ended up in the ICU for 5 days where he lost over 20 pounds while barely avoiding the ventilator and thinking he was going to die?

Thanks for your input as well. Whether productive or not is debatable. Not to derail the thread, which I know you always like to complain about, I never claimed the virus was something that isn't serious. People get sick. As a doctor, I'm sure you know not everyone's immune systems are the same. So I have no doubt you can pick out stories of perfectly healthy people getting sick from this. But perfectly healthy people drop dead all the time. I can point out just as many stories about all the people this isn't doing a damn thing to. Gobert and Mitchell are two of them. And probably more so since studies are coming in proving so.

I know you're the "resident" doctor here so you'll have ALL the answers, of course, so how dare anyone question anything you say, but forgive me if I don't automatically defer to your expertise. Not anything against you personally, and I do value your input here with regards to sports injuries, even though you make snide remarks about my input here, but there's tons of doctors with different viewpoints than yours or Fauci's. It's why we get 2nd opinions.

And there's plenty of doctors claiming this isn't as serious as it's being made to be. Again, not that those it kills isn't serious, but in regards to the pandemic state that it has put us in and everything that that's doing. So, you, a doctor, says one thing, other doctors say other things, who are you supposed to believe?

I've never been a conspiracy theorist type of guy, but I do tend to gravitate towards, where there's smoke there's usually fire. And there's a ton of smoke regarding everything about this virus. Again, not that it isn't killing people, but everything else about it. The flu kills people and we as a society apparently don't give 2 shits about that. H1N1 was a pandemic but we didn't shut the world down, costing tens of millions their jobs and their businesses, over that.

That said, I hope we can get back to NFL Random Thoughts of the Day. Of course, this may be one you don't mind derailing, so then I guess it'll be OK.

Or we could stop acting like this thing is an automatic death sentence and get on with our lives. How are Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell BTW? Are they still alive?

How about the many, many people that were close together on the Florida beaches for spring break. They have come down with the virus and had many deaths...................Wait, I believe I am wrong. That did not happen or we would have heard about it I feel sure.

NFL has an opportunity to revolutionize in-game advertising
May 12, 2020, 10:15 AM EDT

As the NFL stares at the possibility of games played with no one staring at the field from the stands, the league is looking at the loss of significant revenue. The challenge becomes replacing it.

Deep in an item from Jonathan Jones of CBSSports.com resides a clue to how the NFL could replace lost ticket money: An explosion in on-field advertising revenue.

The ads would be seen by the millions watching the games on TV. Jones specifically mentions the possibility of new ads on the walls surrounding the field, ads on a tarp in empty seats that would be visible in TV shots, ads on the nets behind the goal posts, and virtual advertising that could be rotated digitally throughout the game.

But why stop there? At a time when sports fans will be starved for sports, will anyone complain about, for example, the placement of ads on uniforms? Or how about a green-screen decal on the helmet that becomes a rotating advertisement during close-up shots?

If the NFL had put ads on uniforms from the inception of the league 100 years ago, no one would care that ads are on the uniforms now, like a NASCAR jumpsuit or the full front of the shirts worn by soccer clubs. As the NFL tries to turn a negative into a positive, one very lucrative positive could be an opportunity to jump with both feet onto what had long been regarded a third rail for the NFL and embrace a proliferation of advertising, all in the name of replacing the revenue lost via the absence of fans.

And then, once fans are back and the bridge has been crossed, the new approach to advertising will simply continue, ostensibly to help further replace the revenue lost during the 2020 season. Then, after a few years of getting everyone used to it, the ads will just stay put.

Just watch how things will change. It will be billed as "Temporary", but once it is done things will be permanent. That is in the NFL, MLB and Political Life.

Baseball’s current labor struggle is a glimpse into what the NFL could face
Posted by Mike Florio on May 12, 2020, 7:50 PM EDT

Major League Baseball would like to launch a 2020 season in July, with 82 games and an expanded postseason and above all else the return of sport. The MLB Players Association, however, seems to be prepared to balk at the concept of revenue sharing — given that revenues will be dramatically limited by games played without fans present.

The current negotiations follow last month’s deal, pursuant to which the owners agreed to advance $170 million in salary and the players agreed not to challenge any salaries forfeited during games lost to the pandemic. Even though the Yankees alone have $250 million in salary commitments for 2020, it’s a good deal for the players, given that paragraph 11 of the Uniform Player Contract states that each player’s agreement is subject to “the right of the Commissioner to suspend the operation of this contract during any national emergency during which Major League Baseball is not played.”

So either the players don’t play during the ongoing national emergency and don’t get paid (beyond the $170 million) or they play and get full pay. There’s nothing in the labor deal or the player contract that authorizes the league to pay the players less than full pay, if games are played.

That’s the player’s leverage, and they have every right to use it. The owners, if they had wanted, could have placed terms in the CBA requiring the players to, for example, share revenue in the event that games are played under circumstances (like a pandemic) that reduce the flow of cash into the league’s coffers.

The potential impasse between baseball and its union is relevant to the NFL because, unlike baseball’s standard player contract, the NFL by all appearances has no authority to reduce or withhold player pay if the season doesn’t happen and/or if games are played with no fans present.
THE REST OF THE STORY

Thought this was a fun off-season timekiller exercise..

What if the NFL had a quarterback-only draft today?

1. Cincinnati Bengals: Patrick Mahomes (24 years old)
The reigning Super Bowl MVP and easiest pick in this draft. Pairing up Mahomes with A.J. Green, Tyler Boyd, Tee Higgins, John Ross, and Auden Tate would turn Cincinnati from the NFL’s least watchable team into a legitimate reason to buy Sunday Ticket.

2. Washington: Lamar Jackson (23 years old)
The reigning league MVP owns the NFL record for most single-season rushing yards as a quarterback and led the league in passing touchdowns while doing so. He’s 19-3 as a starter during the regular season. His playoff record could use some polish, but even if he’s done growing as a player, he’s an absolute monster capable of single-handedly swinging games. Washington needs that, because its offensive depth chart is just a picture of the Mongrovian flag.

3. Detroit Lions: Russell Wilson (31 years old)
Wilson is a perennial MVP candidate with Super Bowl bonafides. He’s also the reason the Seahawks refuse to slide into rebuilding mode following year after year of baffling draft decisions and shoddy blocking (99 sacks allowed the past two seasons). Now he gets to oversee a perpetual rebuild (bad) while throwing to Marvin Jones, Kenny Golladay, and D’Andre Swift (better).

4. New York Giants: Deshaun Watson (24 years old)
Watson goes from a franchise that just fixed a gaping hole at left tackle (albeit by giving Laremy Tunsil record-setting money) to one that hopes it has after drafting Andrew Thomas at No. 4 overall. Watson guided Houston — a team that went 1-11 in the games he didn’t start in 2017 — to a 24-13 record in his three seasons. He’s also responsible for the only Bill O’Brien playoff win that didn’t come against Connor Cook.

5. Miami Dolphins: Aaron Rodgers (36 years old)
Is Rodgers fading as he heads into his late 30s? Or were the past two seasons of good, not great, play the product of a lackluster cast of receiving talent behind Davante Adams? Even if it’s the latter, he’s made too many insane throws in big moments to be ignored. Plus, he’s younger than Ryan Fitzpatrick so ... youth movement in South Beach?

...

26. Houston Texans: Daniel Jones (22 years old)
Jones swaps out Dave Gettleman as his GM for Bill O’Brien. He may be cursed.

Jones somehow had three different games where he had at least four touchdown passes and zero interceptions. He also had seven games with multiple turnovers, including so, so many embarrassing fumbles. He is the Schrodinger’s Cat of second-year quarterbacks. Houston is perfect for him.

With the fully guaranteed $30,000 million, he can easily buy momma 100 cadillac SUVs.......and still have enough to live on along with all of the significant others in his life, for the rest of their lives...................whether he is able to play one down of football or not..............compliments of the Dolphins.
And that is why you pointed out some time ago that financially it would be best for Tu'a to come out this draft and hope some team would draft him high. Whether that will prove good decision by Miami remains to be seen. Miami may be looking for a QB in 2021.

I thought Tua was an awesome QB with the Tide. He suffered a severe injury last season. Miami must have the warm and fuzzies b/c they invested a RD1 pick on him. As for Miami and Tua.....they have Fitzpatrick to carry the load early or for that the season if the Dolphins decide to give Tua 2020 to be 100% healthywhile learning the system from RF. I could see the Dolphins signing RF to a 2-3 year deal so he can mentor Tua and be there as a QB2 who has complete knowledge of their system.

Has the NFL season just been cancelled by California? Or at least delayed?

Goodell has stated that all teams must play by the same corona rules. California has just extended the stay-home mandate through the summer.

This means no training camp for California teams. So this means no training camp for any team.

Now Goodell/NFL has the option of moving the California teams out of state.

Stay tuned.

Owners got some pull there....especially with the LA teams wanting to open their brand new stadium. Man, you really want to piss them off, tell the 49'ers that they'll share the Raiders stadium and the Rams get sent to Seattle and Chargers go to Arizona. Let's see Howe that would go over with their fans. Hope Newsom didn't make too many changes to the Governor's residence.

I guess the California teams could move training camp and pre-season games out of state. I suppose Californians are allowed to leave the state, and then come back to start the season. This would be a strain on families, but doable. The Texans went out of state a few years back, for the first couple of weeks, not the intire camp.

But the wild card would be whether Newsom extends the mandate beyond August. And making contingencies if he does. Some universities/colleges have already announced they will remain closed through the end.of the year.

And there's also what is happening in New York, Illinois and other blue states.

Edit: Update: The stay at home has been extended only for Los Angeles County.

With California governor Gavin Newsom throwing water on the idea of throwing football fans into a stadium before herd immunity is achieved and/or a coronavirus vaccine is developed, the NFL may need to be ready to stage Rams, Chargers, and 49ers home games in front of no fans. Or, alternatively, to play those “home” games in stadiums where fans will be able to show up and buy tickets, parking spots, food, beer, merchandise, programs, etc., etc.
And it wouldn’t be hard to make that happen. Simple cross-referencing has identified practical temporary homes for the three California teams.

First, the 49ers could play in Arizona. Both teams have home games in Week Nine, but the 49ers play on Thursday night while the Cardinals play on Sunday. In Week 13, the Cardinals play on Sunday, but the 49ers play on Monday night. The two teams never have home games on the same day.

Second, the Chargers could play in Las Vegas — if the Raiders are willing to let the Chargers christen the stadium on the second Sunday of the season, one day before the Raiders host a Monday Night Football game there. The only glitch arises in Week 14, with both teams due to play home games the same day. But one of the games could be moved to Saturday (college football season will be over) or to Monday, creating the kind of Monday night two-pack that used to happen from time to time when teams that shared space with the local baseball club was bounced by a World Series home game.

Third, the Rams could play in Dallas. Other than Week Four, when both are due to play at home, the schedule has no conflicts. Again, one of the games could be moved to Monday night.

The league has said nothing to suggest that California teams would share stadiums elsewhere in 2020. If, however, games can’t be played at all in California or if the NFL would prefer games with customers away from L.A. or San Francisco to home games in empty venues, it won’t be hard to do. Apart from dealing with a Week Four conflict in Dallas and a Week 14 issue in Las Vegas, it will be easy to find other places for California teams to play home games away from home.

Since the above piece, the NFL has reported that they are willing to move the California teams out of California while the restrictions are in place. Look for Las Vegas and Arizona to be at the top of the list.

Dallas Cowboys are still stuck in a stupid conundrum with Dak and redhead when they could have traded Dak for a first round package of picks and picked up Brady/Gronk to go with their new WR and whatever other picks they'd have acquired as well. Hilarious how stupid they were. Lol!

Instead the one team hardly anyone saw coming was the Bucs who got them both now and have had tons of guys around the league beg their agents to get over there. All these whiny Brady haters thought it over AGAIN, and will soon be choking on crow throughout the season. Bucs had a very strong draft and their new 5th round slot WR looks very shifty and ready to fit in based on skill set.

Looks like the NFL is going to be the sitcom it is.................the TV networks with empty stadiums will be using fed fan noise (NFL's version of the laugh track)...............and will use green screens to make virtual reality filled stadiums............

Becoming more and more like Madden...........

Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper believes there should be enough coronavirus tests by the fall so that NFL teams can play games in stadiums with some fans.

"You won't be playing having full stadiums, but that doesn't mean you can't have some fans in the stadium either," Tepper told CNBC on Wednesday. "If you're comfortable being in a closed airplane for a cross-country trip, 18 inches apart, maybe with two seats in between you and being 5 feet away from each other, you might be comfortable in an open-air stadium."
The Panthers are one of twenty teams with open-air stadiums. Five more have retractable roofs.

Hopefully not at Noon.

I do not care about stadium seats and just watch the game. I really do not like interviews of former NFL players or commentators telling me what I saw or what play is coming next. I also want to see athletes compete in best scenario possible not in rain, mud or snow. I also realize others think "that's football!". No it's weather. There is a channel for that.

Who hates Brady? He’s magnificent at what he does and every franchise in the league would have loved him in his prime. Patriot fans suck ass but greatness is appreciated. Nothing is guaranteed in sports. This could be Jordan to the Wizards or Shaq to the Heat.

Are you kidding? There are analysts on ESPN/Fox that constantly lie on his stats and hate on him regularly. (Shannon, Kellerman, Nick Wright, and many others)

Many have on this site for years. Several trashed him throughout the yr last season claiming he was done and hadn't even watched the games.

As far as how he'll play next season, he'll play very well as long as he's healthy. That doesn't mean he has to be elite by the way. I mean at a top 10 level. If a QB can continue to play at a top ten level age 43 then he should keep playing. His status and leadership alone will elevate that franchise and already has.

We’ll see. If you’re correct I will be the first to admit.

Cowboys are in no man's land wondering whether or not if they should way overpay for Dak. He won't be worth it if they do. He showed that last season when he couldn't even get them into the playoffs down the stretch. Then if they don't pay him when they could have traded him and landed Brady, man will they look funny.

Receiver Depth Helped Bucs Get Their Man in Tyler Johnson

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted University of Minnesota wide receiver Tyler Johnson with the 15th pick of the fifth round, roughly two days and three hours into the 2020 NFL Draft. For Buccaneers Head Coach Bruce Arians, however, the wait felt more like four months.
Back on New Year's Day, the Buccaneers had a team of scouts on hand to watch Minnesota and Auburn face off in the 2020 Outback Bowl at Raymond James Stadium, which is about a mile from Tampa Bay's team headquarters, the AdventHealth Training Center. Those scouts obviously liked what they saw – the Bucs also selected Minnesota safety Antoine Winfield, Jr. in the second round – but so did Arians, who was also taking in the game. He saw Johnson go off with a career-capping career-best game of 12 catches for 204 yards and two touchdowns.

There’s a lot of hype going on in these parts right now but it doesn’t mean jack until it translates on the field. At least the Uber crotch grabbing turnover machine is out of here.

The Bucs will be competitive if Brady can just utilize the weapons around him and not spot the other team 14 points a game. The Bucs outplayed so many of the opponents they lost to last year. However when your QB is handing out turnovers like candy on Halloween no team can overcome that.

The Texans game was a perfect example. I thought I might miss the National Anthem but not the kickoff. I start walking up to my seat thinking the game hasn’t started yet, I look up and it’s 7-0 Texans thanks to Mr Winston. He then proceeded to throw another pick 6 as soon as I set down. Penalty on the return so the damage ends up being 10-0 before I’ve taken my first sip of beer. The Titans game was pretty much the same thing.

So, if Brady can at least not be doing that the Bucs might be a playoff team. I’m not buying the Super Bowl hype though.

You're asking questions about a player that has never once in his career exemplified the traits you're questioning. His biggest asset as a QB has always been very low TO's and low INT numbers and getting rid of the ball fast. The last thing anyone has to worry about with Brady is him throwing a bunch of picks like Winston was. That isn't even a concern. The only real concern is staying healthy and upright for a full season at 43 years of age and avoiding as many hits as possible. The Bucs will be smart to try and get their running game going as early as possible while the offense gels together to build chemistry where play action plays can become a very effective strategy early on.

Bucs Young Secondary Wants to Be Known for Takeaways

By the end of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' 2019 season, the five primary positions in the secondary (including the nickel back) were being manned by three rookies, one second-year player and one fourth-year graybeard in 27-year-old safety Andrew Adams. It was an extremely young group – nobody besides Adams was older than 23 – but a young group that definitely appeared to be on the rise.

The three rookies were all 2019 draftees in cornerbacks Sean Murphy-Bunting and Jamel Dean and safety Mike Edwards. Edwards was admittedly a late addition to the starting lineup, but he replaced another 23-year-old in second-year safety Jordan Whitehead after Whitehead landed on injured reserve with two weeks to go. The other second-year player was cornerback Carlton Dean, who is actually a couple months younger than Dean.

With the defensive line they have coming back, and the secondary gelling more even from last season and the addition of Winfield Jr. this might be a very bright young secondary poised for a big season.

Owners to vote on resolution to incentivize minority HC, GM hires
Jim Trotter
NFL.COM COLUMNIST

During his state of the league address three months ago at Super Bowl LIV in Miami, Commissioner Roger Goodell acknowledged a need to increase the opportunities for minorities to become head coaches and general managers.

"Clearly we are not where we want to be on this level," he said. "It's clear we need to change. We have already begun discussing those changes, what stages we can take next to determine better outcomes."

The call to action grew even louder after only one of the five coaching vacancies during the offseason was filled by a person of color, continuing a trend in which just three of the past 20 openings have gone to a minority. Now in perhaps its most aggressive and controversial attempt to address the issue, the league will present a pair of resolutions this coming Tuesday during the owners' virtual meeting that it hopes will level the playing field.

The first would remove the longstanding anti-tampering barrier that permits clubs to block assistant coaches from interviewing for coordinator positions with other clubs, even though having coordinator experience is typically the final and most significant step in becoming a head coach. The other would incentivize the hiring of minorities as head coaches or primary football executives by rewarding teams with improved draft slots, multiple sources told NFL.com.

The sources spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the topic. The league declined to comment Friday on this specific agenda for Tuesday's meeting. But if the resolutions were to be voted in under the League Policy on Equal Employment and Workplace Diversity, they would work as follows:
  • If a team hires a minority head coach, that team, in the draft preceding the coach's second season, would move up six spots from where it is slotted to pick in the third round. A team would jump 10 spots under the same scenario for hiring a person of color as its primary football executive, a position more commonly known as general manager.
  • If a team were to fill both positions with diverse candidates in the same year, that club could jump 16 spots -- six for the coach, 10 for the GM -- and potentially move from the top of the third round to the middle of the second round. Another incentive: a team's fourth-round pick would climb five spots in the draft preceding the coach's or GM's third year if he is still with the team. That is considered significant because Steve Wilks and Vance Joseph, two of the four African-American head coaches hired since 2017, were fired after one and two seasons, respectively.
If passed, the changes would be a radical departure from current protocol. League officials have been trying for years to implement programs and procedures that would increase advancement opportunities for minorities, from adopting the Rooney Rule in 2003 to increasing fellowship positions to bringing in pro and college coaches for networking and empowerment summits to working with clubs to allocate more entry-level positions to diverse candidates. In addition to the coaching hires, only two of the 32 GM positions currently belong to someone of color, alarming statistics considering 70 percent of head coach hires during the past three years came from two positions: quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator.
