Stop blaming O'Brien and start blaming the ownership and management

why should the angry mob show restraint for a man who's on record berating opposing coaches, fans, ex players and now completely attacking the character a Texan legend?? Nah man its open game. If some of you have thin skin now would not be the time to visit this forum.
Trust me I don't have thin skin. My post still has validity. The post I quoted is KDog saying "more evidence OB is a horrible person". But the tweet he shared references the Texans and how Rick Smith was supposedly treated by Cal. It doesn't mention OB other than Cal giving most of Smith's authority to OB, Rick Smith met with Cal not OB...so tell me how that means OB is a horrible person from that specific tweet. Now OB is an idiot for many things but that tweet is all on Cal.

lets make this exercise easier and lets look for examples on OBrien being a "good" man??? Finding the bad stuff is too easy.

From all examples BOB is a good man at home, to his wife, his two sons, his family and close friends but for some reason when he walks into the world of NFL football, with grown men present, he becomes a full on pr*ck and trusts no one but his chosen few. He's vindictave and petty which is again why I say he is emotionally compromised and not fit for HC at the NFL level. I wasnt sure of it until these last few examples but I am now.

Call me crazy, but I value Super Bowl wins alot more than regular season records.
Riding coattails.

I dont put much value in that. I only care about his tenure with the Texans. Which was not only a failure but lead to the current failure of the BOB regime.

The problem with this thread is that OB is now the head of management for the Texans. Unfortunately, OB has only displayed egomaniacal sociopathy with no hint of the schizophrenia needed for OB the GM to fire, or even chastise, OB the HC.

Cal McNair is going to need to get himself a pair of big boy pants and clean house, top to bottom.

During the Pats 16-0 season OB was on their staff.
Right, but how was he supposed to ride them?

I've pointed out numerous times that OB did really well with NE which helped him get the job he had in Penn State where he also did ever well. People with irrational emotions and misery sometimes bring these periods up and try to create lies suggesting that he didn't do well at these places.

He did alright the first few years here in Houston, but he couldn't get himself a QB and ultimately used up most of the time he was fairly given. Worst thing to happen was that rookie yr where Watson got hurt, because it bought OB extra time.

Clearly you weren't, because you didn't even make any sense.

O'Brien did very well in NE. Nothing else really needs to be said.
Whether BOB did well in NE is a subjective statement, so I won't respond to that.

Kubiak has 4 super bowl rings, BOB has none. BOB couldn't even win a ring w/ the most successful NFL franchise for the past decade. Those are all facts that I simply brought up.

I know you dont really need it spelled out as you're very bright guy....

There are plenty of nice guy coaches, middle of the road nice guy coaches and lastly plenty of prick coaches and yes none are a recipe for success. The problem with BOBs temperament of being a prick is it's emotionally driven hence it clouds his ability to make sound decisions, on the field and off. We've seen examples, first one that comes to mind is BOB wanting to release Mallet right before a game and go into that game with one QB AND NOW this same emotional prick is our GM.

I would've done the same thing with Mallett if he can't even bother to show up on time for a flight.

Does that make me a prick

It isn't subjective at all.

You'd have to have zero math skills to suggest that.

If hatred for OB makes you create lies about his career than you're just acting childish. He has done more than enough here in Houston to bash him. It is pointless to make up whoppers about a guy who was an OC for a team that had a top 5 offense.

Lol we all have just witnessed the death of a dynasty up in NE b/c both sides got emotional....

Sure that’s how it’s characterized...but as we learn more about each of these situations it turns out that it’s less about him getting emotional and more about the players. Didn’t Duane Brown hold out b/c he got in his feeling b/c the FO wouldn’t give him more money? Didn’t Clowney not sign his tag b/c he got emotional about being traded to a non contending team? Both player and coach are equally responsible for The decisions that come out of those emotions whether u want to accept it or not.

Bwhahaha you don't know if that dynasty is done in New England. And why are we even bringing them up anyways. Plus they wasn't going to reign forever. Everything comes to end one day. But at least they had that type of success. We haven't even sniffed that type of success yet and eith boneheaded decisions year in and year out we won't be seeing it any time soon.

And the bottom line he reacted out of emotions.

On a WR with 3 years left on his contract. All because he may have asked for more. Guess what coach, let him play one more year and analyze it next year. I doubt Hopkins would have sat out the year anyway. But now we’re down to some scrubs at WR and a hopeful TE err..WR in the draft.

If your pro bowl all pro receiver threatens to sit out over a contract dispute, as a coach, can you approach training camp and the season with the idea he is bluffing and will play? What capital do you expend to cover all the bases?

The franchise had faced this same scenario with Brown and look at the problems we had at LT until we signed Tunsil. I think it reasonable OB didn't want to go through all this a second time.

So we trade the player early before the draft and have an opportunity to draft a good receiver in a deep draft for the position.

But there wasn’t any signs he was going to sit out. You could still draft a wr and let him get up to speed while he learns and if he turns out better than Hopkins then Hopkins can get traded. All I know is that this “trade” could have waited longer in the offseason and didn’t need to happen right away.

Reports are his agent told the Texans he would sit out if his contract wasn't renegotiated.

Without the #40 pick we would not have the same opportunities in the draft, what with our other needs.

I'd have just sat him and let him hold out then. He had no leverage in a holdout situation. Sure he could have done it, but he'd have wasted a year if he tried and would have come back. He likely wouldn't have done more than 4 games. I'd have told him to suck it up and play if I couldn't get fair value for him. Screw that. He'd eventually only make himself look bad the longer he held out.

Haha no it makes you still not a head coach! Sorry but you keep Mallet and USE his ass (if even needed) and THEN you throw him away but due to his lack of emotional control Teapot cant think that far ahead to get it straight and now he's doing the exact same thing as our GM.

Players, coaches, GMs, ball boys, all very different animals. I could care less about players being emotional. If we stay focused on BOB as a coach and as GM (that was the subject of my post) in a leadership role over the entire org then we can see that it's quite obvious he becomes incapable of rational thought at the worst times. All this while he continues to lead an entire NFL organization minus ownership. (no pun intended)

Sure, and I'm enough of a hard case I would have, also. But that doesn't mean I can't understand a different position, especially after having gone through the same thing with Brown. If you have a situation, take care of it and move on. I'm pretty sure there was more going on than just the salary dispute.

The answer to the first question is yes. Yes you can approach training camp with your all pro wide receiver thinking about sitting out. Call his bluff. It happens. If he wants to surrender game checks, fine.

The thing is, this was avoidable. Restructure his contract. Pay the man, reward him for all he’s done and all he will do. Now the Texans are going into the draft hoping they are able to draft a wide receiver that some day in the future will be a solid guy. But there’s no guarantee they’ll even get a guy that becomes a starter in the league. The 40th pick in the draft, hey, that’s a decent slot to be picking in. But for arguably the best receiver in the game, a guy who’s been as solid off the field as on it? C’mon, man.

I hear Kevin Johnson has been shipped out of Buffalo. Remind me again where he was drafted? And if I remember correctly, he was going to slide right in for AJB, the Texans secondary wouldn’t miss a beat.

Even if they get a receiver with the 40th pick he won't play next year. OB does not like to play rookies. They always seem to end up with some mysterious injury and are IR'd for the season.

There was, but I'm not letting go of Hopkins or any player for that matter for really poor value. I'm still going to negotiate to get good compensation unless I'm in a tight bind to trade him really fast for different reasons which they were not. There was no reason to rush this even if it had to be done.

And what "mess" might that be? A popular player being traded? If this is a problem I'd question the character of those players who had a problem. And exactly how is Easterby "picking his nose in everyone's business"? If players are making this accusation surely they are also revealing details. What are the details?

No way are you going to get direct confirmation on what you are asking from any Texans player or team management. I assume the "mess" is the way OB is running the organization, whether the fans agree or not. It's not like we are employees of the Texans so there is no consequence to say whatever we want. The personal affairs of any employee should not matter as long as it does not bring discredit upon the employer. That's a standard for a lot of employers including the NFL with their personal conduct policy. To me, its not just that Nuk may have wanted more money, it's the fact that O'Brien has not done anything to prove he was/is worthy of being a GM. If he hasn't been able to manage games on a consistent basis, how in the hell did Cal expect him to be a GM? I hope I'm wrong but it seems as though that O'Brien as a the GM saves the team $$$ if OB's compensation didn't change. Are they still paying Gaine even though he is employed by the Bills?

It‘s always been that way, it’s very sad to say.

When Dom Capers was here, everyone thought he was a cool guy. Up until the point where people didn’t like his coaching. Then he became a horrible person. He was mocked, his character disparaged, etc.

When Kubiak arrived, everyone thought he was a cool dude. Then when people didn’t

In comes O’Brien. He’s a cool dude. Then when people complained about his coaching, all of a sudden he turns into this horrible person. Calling him names, mocking him, etc.

The next coach, it will be the same.

Those guys never turned into horrible people. WE DID!!!!
Dumb. None were horrible people. Just horrible coaches.

And some of us learned the hard way that we would have been way better off if the McNairs would have given Kubiak more time to recover from his mini-stroke in 2013.

Yep. There was a rush to this trade. And based on current reports from a variety of sources, it was emotion-based and irrational.

ALL so-called "reports" of a potential hold out comes from one single source: Houston Texans, Inc. Yeah, completely trustworthy there. [/sarcasm]
