Are you guys still on board with hiring Nick Caserio as GM?

Ob may or not be on a leash. Imo the timeline here is the Watson contract. You have 2 do everything possible while hes on the rookie contract.

I'm not so sure that's the timeline. He only has one more year on that contract and its fairly likely they try to extend / negotiate a new deal before he plays that final year.

Its scary because he's probably going to get in the neighborhood of 30m in the first year of a new deal and increase over the course of it.

Is he the problem or is it OB ? Really so far its a combination of the two , Watson missing open guys and OB not tailoring a system to his strengths.

Watson is at his best when he's off script , asking him to stand in the pocket and pick a defense apart is like putting a square peg in a round hole. He aint that guy.

There's no doubt that Watson is a gifted athlete and a pretty good QB despite his flaws there's two questions you have to ask - Is he good enough to win it all and is OB the guy that's going to get the best out of him (I think we've already answered this one).

If you think he's good enough , you gotta move on from OB and bring in a coach who is willing to tailor an offense around Watson rather than running "His System".

If you come to the conclusion he's not good enough …. what do you do ? Giving him $30m per sure doesn't seem like the answer. How do you move on ?

I think the odds are that Watson would stay over OB ...then again , this is Cletus McNair we're talking about and TBH he's a complete unknown so far. There's no telling what will happen.

I'd really like to see Watson with another coach before handing him $150m.

It doesn't matter who the Texans bring in as GM. Gaine was considered an "OB guy" and good friend. OB ran him out of town on a rail after Gaine did exactly what he said he planned to do and how he planned to do it. Bring Caserio in and OB will run him out just as soon as it's convenient to.
It would be ironic if Caserio is hired and he eventually has to fire O'Brien.

Besides my complaint on Easterby is that he is completely unqualified. He is not a football guy
What makes someone a football guy? What makes you qualified to say he's not a football guy?

& he's not here to influence football decisions. He's here to influence organizational decisions. Like a "Lean" management team. They don't go into GE & teach them about manufacturing electronics. They help streamline the organization.

Bill Belichick believes he is extremely qualified for this task. But you know better.

Belichick thought he was qualified to be character coach and chaplain. Let him sit in on meetings and throw the football in practice.

And didn't give him an extension.

I never claimed to be qualified, just offering my opinion. I would take the GM job though.

I may be misinformed on this, but it was my understanding he quit the Patriots. Not the other way around.

Jack Easterby, regarded as a player favorite and an key member of the Patriots' organization, ended his six-year tenure with New England in February to latch on with the Houston Texans in April as their "executive vice president of team development."

That move apparently didn't sit well with the Patriots, who are "livid" with Bill O'Brien's Texans for hiring Easterby, the Boston Sports Journal's Greg Bedard reported Wednesday, citing a source.

That was his spin after the fact imo.

"Easterby’s contract with the Patriots expired after last season, and he has decided to pursue other opportunities in football. "

https://www.boston.com/sports/new-england-patriots/2019/02/28/character-coach-jack-easterby-is-leaving-the-patriots

How could he quit when his contract expired?

There was also a report that he wanted a promotion but it wasn't coming in new England

You always do this, if it doesn't fit your narrative then it either is just spin or it flat out isn't true. Fact, you don't know what his role or responsibilities in NE were nor what all Belichick did or did not trust him to do. NE is notorious for playing their F/O cards close to the chest and everyone's job description pretty much breaks down to "Whatever Bill Belichick needs you to do".

Fact you don't know that they didn't extend him an offer or that he didn't go to them and say "Don't bother trying to extend me because I can't stay here after what Kraft was accused of." NE lost a lot of people over that, rumor is that's why they fought so hard to keep Caserio because they couldn't afford to lose him to right now.

As far as leaving NE because he wanted a promotion that is possible as well but if so that has less to do with Easterby than it does the NE problem. Its a problem they have long had and is actually starting to worry some people there that Belichick F/O side and Brady player side are both glass ceilings and everyone that wants to move higher has to leave. It was fine when they both weren't on the verge of retirement but now that they are its a real problem.

https://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/patriots/2019/06/25/downside-patriots-system-evident-nick-caserio-case/weyQL9CPI8hZFnqS0OjfcI/story.html

"Continuity in key roles (coach/GM, quarterback, offensive coordinator) constitutes one of the Patriots’ chief competitive advantages, but it comes with a downside. It’s a roadblock to career advancement and talent retention. The only way to move up the ladder is to move on from Fort Foxborough."

Ultimately all your "concerns" about Easterby and Caserio for that matter amount to they are friends with Bill O'Brien. Likewise your primary qualification for hiring a new GM is will they answer yes to the question of "Would you fire Bill O'Brien".

Easterby left Feb. 28. Kraft was only charged but not yet convicted Feb. 22.

Also if there had been an extension or promotion in the works it would have gotten done before Feb. 22

But I'm well aware Easterby used that situation to spin it as a positive for himself

So that sounds like they didn't want to give Easterby a bigger role which is what I said

My thoughts exactly! Especially your last sentence , also agree that it's a combination between Watson and the head coach. Of course and most agree the offensive line has played a part to make it a trinity. Best case scenario for me would be O'Brien turns into a fantastic HC and we luck into a UDFA quarterback that turns into an NFL Minchew or an LSU Joe Burrow before we throw scary bucks at Watson. I like number 4 but I do have a lot of concerns. To get $25 m+ he has to play Elite not just have the potential to become Elite. I don't care what the going NFL rate for QBs is.

What really sucks is that the adds are that he's paid $30m or more per and we don't really know if he's a real difference maker or not.

I also think that OB will go before Watson - its much easier to replace a coach than a talented QB.

Trouble is that QBs that aren't even as close to good as he is now are getting and going to get paid big money themselves AND even if we are smart enough not to yet throw the big bucks at him you know some team will. I mean look at Trent Brown, everything said that he was middle of the pack at best playing in one of the best situations a tackle can find himself and low and behold the Raiders reset the market with him which is going to hurt us when Tunsil comes due. Much as I hate to give Jerry Jones any credit I'm glad he is making Dak prove himself, which is not going good for Dak, but again even if he doesn't somebody will throw stupid money at him just to make a splash.

So if we don't resign Watson to the big money then we are left in QB limbo again only this time without the means to be contenders for moving up. I would say that they should take one in the later rounds as a project but the last time BoB picked a QB project we got Savage so...……..yeah.

Respectfully disagree with your take DocBar because Caserio or anybody that Cal would hire would be his guy, not the GM he inherited.

2024 / Rebuilding Block 4 After Playoffs / Texans
I'm tired of the Texans trying to chase the never-catching NE Unicorn. No more cast-offs......no one has panned out.

I want a young fresh mind, with a eye for talent......give me Eliot Wolf for 2020 and let him bring Alonzo Highsmith with him since he's also proving to be a valuable talent evaluator. Wolf should start landing on teams radar's sooner rather than later.

LMAO then why bring in Caserio and pay him top dollar if Buttchin is still calling the shots? Tell me how this makes sense? LMAOOOOO

honestly, im done with all things New England.

Texans, Panthers interested in Patriots personnel executive Nick Caserio for GM position
Previous reports suggested the Texans could go without a GM, but they still have their eyes on Caserio
Long-time Patriots personnel executive Nick Caserio remains well positioned to land a general manager position with one of several teams, league sources said, with the Texans and Panthers both very interested in tapping into the New England pipeline with their front offices.

Contrary to a report last week, numerous sources indicated the Texans remain interested in filling a vacant general manager position in 2020, with head coach Bill O'Brien essentially holding both positions this season. The Texans planned to hire Caserio for that role in 2019 until the Patriots threatened a tampering case again them, but with Caserio's contract up after this season, that pursuit can continue next year.

NFL Rumors: Patriots, Nick Caserio ‘Have Gotten Nowhere’ In Contract Talks
by Zack Cox on Sun, Dec 15, 2019 at 10:39AM

One key member of the New England Patriots organization could be on the move this offseason.

Director of player personnel Nick Caserio, whom Houston Texans sought to interview for their general manager vacancy over the summer before the Patriots filed tampering charges, is expected to test the market when his current contract expires after this season, according to a report Saturday from NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo.

“The Patriots have tried to broach the possibility of an extension (with Caserio) and, from what I gather, have gotten nowhere with it,” Garafolo reported. “So he is going to be on the market as a GM. I’m thinking he gets a job elsewhere.”

Mangler

Toro de España
Why the hell would Caserio come to Houston for a personnel role, working under this delusional control freak of a HC/OC/GM? He’d be making a lateral move, only he’d now work for a mediocre franchise. I doubt he’ll accept a personnel role over GM. Not happening!

Feel like bringing Nick here would likely extend OB here longer as them two would like to see how they work with one another and if Nick feels they have good chemistry together, then it could be a problem.

Would it be weird if Texans got Casario in here and we trade our 2nd for TB?

BUENO!
A GM candidate worth his salt would be a fool to come here. You run afoul of Butt-Chin and you're going to have your HC in the owners ear in no time at all. If the Texans hire this guy then you know it's because O'Brien wants him and he thinks he can control him.
