Watson or Mahomes? Who is more exciting?

Tweet from @riversmccown:

I don't think he had much to work with on the two sacks he took this week. Like I said when I posted the first one, he could have stepped up quicker. But other than that, it's not like there were easy checkdowns in front of him. JAX covered the few underneaths well.

Which is what I have been saying.
He was staring at the checkdowns on both sacks who were still covered when pressure got there.

In the future he needs to just throw the ball away. For those saying he didn’t see the blitz, it sure seems like he did.

The check downs in those images …. had their backs to him. They really weren't check downs in the traditional sense.

This is a flaw in the play design.

No , nothing Watson can do at that point other than chuck it in the stands.

But if they recognize that pressure pre snap and adjust the play / route accordingly …. Watson isn't looking at the receivers back.

But that's on the WR's as much as it is the play design

I'm beginning to wonder if that's by design (I know it is but don't know if this is the reason) …. but to cover for Watson's lack of vision across the middle. He just seems more comfortable with throws outside the numbers ? .. So OB designs the plays as such ?

Just a recent theory …

Watson's only looked like a "Good Quarterback" on one drive so far this season - that drive lasted all of two plays. Other than that he's struggled throwing the ball.

He really needs help pre-snap identifying where pressure is going to come from , seeing the middle of the field and getting rid of the ball quickly - seems the more time he has , the more he takes - Again that may be because of the route combinations all of which seem to take all day to develop.

Maybe OB's ways of keeping Watson comfortable are getting in the way …. take the training wheels off and make him use the whole field …. Watson can be better for it or we can go back to looking for a QB.

Watson had a 71.1% DVOA throwing to the middle of the field in 2018. In layman’s terms: He was 71.1% better than the average quarterback on a per-play basis when targeting just the middle of the field. It was 54.0% in 2017. So far, in our small sample size of 2019, it is 154.1%. It is the area of the field he throws at best, and, I would wager to say, it’s the area he feels most comfortable throwing to.

So you think DW reads the field & blitz better than 154% of the QB's in the league?

So by small sample size you mean the 1 pass to Akins and the 1 TD pass to Stills? How about more of that then?
I believe he means - and correct me if I'm wrong, corry - only the NO game is covered by the video so that's the "small sample size".

Also, let's define what "middle of the field" means so we're all talking the same area. I think it means between the numbers.
Between the hash marks is way too small an area IMO. Outside the numbers is the sideline area.
Fair?
If you have another definition, let's hear it.

I'm a texan fan and I love me some DW4. This shouldn't be at 9 pgs. Mahomes is the baddest qb in league right now

And he doesn't have the best wr in league. DW4 does

Agree. If those two become the Manning and Brady or Rodgers and Brees of this generation, I’ll gladly take it.

Jordan won 6.
Olajuwon won 2.

(Most) Everyone thinks Jordan is the best ever.
Most everyone thinks Olajuwon is one of the best ever.

I'd never ever ever trade Dream's place here in Houston for what Mike could have been.

If Deshaun and Pat play out similarly I won't feel any different.

Bill Russell is the best ever.
He won ELEVEN championships. :D

Back to the original question.

So far this year, just two games in, Mahomes, Prescott, Jackson, Wilson, Brady, and Watson have all looked good. As I said earlier, I'm looking fwd to the Ravens @ Chiefs game. I give the Chefs the edge since they're at home. Watson is "more exciting" since compared to those other QBs, he often HAS to get out of trouble to make plays. Those other guys have decent-to-good O-lines. Watson does not. His ability to escape (sometimes) makes him exciting.
Not saying he's the best, just the most fun to watch. i.e., "exciting"

...I mean Brady is so effing efficient he's almost boring. :D

If Watson is smart he'll get himself the hell out of Houston as fast as he can. The Texans are playing some serious Russian roulette the longer they keep OB after this season. They need to find a guy that can come in right away and get a competent offense going that would know how to use a player like Watson to the fullest. They can't even do that until the get a new GM though. That means O'Brien has probably at least one more season after this one to get this team looking really strong. At that point either Cesario or a new GM can assess whether or not if they want to keep OB further than that. It will be their job on the line at that point.

I'd try to get Harbaugh from Michigan if I could. I don't care about anything that has or hasn't happened at Michigan. All I care about is how fast he turned around San Francisco and how well Kaepernick played under his tutelage. I'd like to see what he could do with the Texans.

He also needs to identify coverage & visualize how his route patterns are going to stress the coverage he reads.

Really a lot on his plate & he's having to learn it all at once. Doesn't look like BO'b is making it easy for him.

Still, I think he's a smart kid & will find a way to make it work for him.

WR's would have to read the same as he does

That’s something that keeps getting passed over but our WRs aren’t really doing Watson any favors by just sticking to their routes and not looking back till the route finishes. Could be that’s how they been coached but I’ve noticed several times the WRs aren’t looking for the ball till they finish the route even if they got open sooner and yes that goes for Nuk to.

It's hard to have 11 guys seeing and thinking the same thing

Most of this is on the coaches and play design.

What we see is the players doing what they are suppose to do on these plays ….

I don't see any pre snap adjustment to account for pressure - changing of a route for that express purpose. They do what the play says and that's that.

That playbook needs to be thrown out and burned …. they need to design into these plays a preprogramed check down based upon the presumed pressure presnap. Not after the fact when Watson is running for his life.
OB has to trust his QB and give him the freedom to make calls / adjustments at the line rather than these rigid routes when his OL cant block the cheerleaders …

Playing the on pace game, through 18% of the season, Mahomes is on pace for 6,372 yards and 53 TD.

I'll take the 'under' thank you.

6372 might be a stretch …. but 5,477 -Manning's record …. I'll take the over. He threw for 5097 last year.

53 TD's …. the record is 55. He threw 50 last year. He had two games last year where he threw 6 and only 2 games where he threw 1 or 0.
One thing for sure is they are gonna put the ball in his hands and they will score a buncha points …. He'll get the opportunities. I wouldn't put this one out of the realm of possibility. Might not be this year , but eventually he breaks that 55 record.

Sure 6,372 is a stretch, seeing how nobody has ever surpassed 5,500.
But he's averaging 398 yards per game against a pretty good Jacksonville defense, and a pretty good Ravens defense. And they have to keep throwing the ball and scoring because their defense sucks.

I'll absolutely take the under as well, but he just needs to average 329 per game to break the record. He's averaging 328.8 for his career so far. Anything more than that and he could be pushing 5,600, 5,700. I don't think that is out of the question at all.

328 average sounds like a gimmie …. He's had that in a half twice this season.

I think he breaks the yardage record this year , assuming he stays healthy …. and the TD record eventually.

That Dec.8th game against the Pats is one I wont miss if at all possible.

Look at him right now and he doesn't even have Tyreek Hill yet.

Only two QB's in the history of the league had thrown for 300+ yards and no picks in each of the first three games to start a season …. Brady and Mahomes.

Mahomes just made it 4 straight 300 yard games with no picks.

Wonder if KC would trade us Andy Reid …. ??

Mahomes is already an elite NFL QB. Maybe the best QB in the league this year.

Watson is a badass, but he's a work in progress. Some things can be attributed to coaching, bad OL, schemes, etc., but there are certainly things in his game that he can improve on. Seems like half of his sacks are his own fault.

If I'm Watson I get obrien fired because there's too much talk that he's much worse than mahomes when it's mainly coaching difference. Gonna cost him a lot of money

Touchdowns--------Mahomes 1st -- Watson 16th

Some numbers were ties with other players and some players were left out due to little play.
