Takeaways from the Panthers game.

It’s time...... I hear and see it in here all the time that we have one of the best QB’s in football and one of the most dangerous receiving cores in all of football....... yet almost every play we can’t seem to get ANYBODY OPEN........ that makes no good sense AT ALL GUYS.......other teams with less talent are torching us every other play with no Nuk or Fuller........ like seriously...... what’s going on .... On Kirby all week???? You can not practice and play this bad on offense....... long developing plays should be THROWN OUT UNLESS NEEDED.... get the ball out of Deshaun’s hand quick with 3 and 5 step drops ....... use the middle of the field with the slot and Tight end..... check down to the RB’s..... Duke Johnson is one of the best RB receivers in the NFL but we don’t swing him the damn ball!!!!!! Every time we used the RB’s WE GASHED THIS DEFENSE today..... and you know what our GENIUS coach does after 30 or 40 yards plays swinging the RB’s the ball and getting them in space...... WE DONT USE IT ANYMORE AND GO BACK TO LONG DEVELOPING PLAYS WITH A NEW OLINE LEARNING EACH OTHER AND THE OPPOSING D COORDINATOR BLITZING OUR QB EVERY OTHER PLAY BECUZ HE HAS REGRESSED AND CANT HIT A HOT READ TO SAVE HIS LIFE ANYMORE........ Deshaun stays after....... he watches film .....has a short memory blah blah blah....... he has looked bad except for about 2 quarters this season thus far

Throw out these sand lot trick plays........ that DeAndre Hopkins bullshit play couldn’t have been a worse call in football....... you called a play for our damn wide receiver to throw the ball ACROSS THE DAMN FIELD ACROSS HIS BODY........ that’s something most teams teach most QB’s to NOT DO ever...... yet we asked our wide receiver to do just that....... un frickin believeable........ and BOB and his time management has been a running Joke in here for far to long now...... it was funny at first ...... NOW ITS JUST SAD ACTUALLY.......

Our receivers have no moves to get themselves open. They just can't compare with AJ. You can't get the ball out of Watson's hand in 3 seconds if he won't throw it in 6. If you want a quick release he must throw to a predetermined target whether open or double covered. If you want to look everybody over and make a decision quickly, that's something you can't teach. It has to do with how quickly your QB thinks.

You're right, that trick play when we were marching toward a TD and doing well with basic plays was the most poignant disgrace in sports history.

CMC touched the ball 37 times today for over 180 yards.

Hopkins had 5 receptions for 41 yards. Fuller had 2 or 3 receptions for about 20 yards.

That’s the story of two coaches. One was creative enough to get his best player heavily involved in the game plan while starting a backup behind center. The other had difficulty getting his best offensive players involved while having one of the best QB in the league.

The talent on this offense is too good to put up just 2 TD’s in two home games.

Good lord man, get over it. Watson is clearly not one of the best QBs in the league. I know you wished and hoped he would be, but he’s just not.

Please tell me they sell this at Sam's or Costco... the regular size just isnt enough... we need it in bulk.

Every team crakes a smile when they land in Houston on Saturday to play the Texans on Sunday. Or when the Texans land in another city on Saturday to play on the road the opposing head coach knows just out coach O’Brien and that should be good enough.

Dare I suggest we put in our backup QB just to see what would happen? There isn't much to lose, looking forward from here.

I'm just going to say this every week from now on, starting last week - y'all need to listen to O'Brien. He tells you exactly what the problem is after every loss and many of the wins. The team needs to be coached better. Take the man at his word.

Obviously he does not know how to do this.

I mean you gotta do something different...... becuz the longer developing plays ain’t working...... and you say it’s hard to get the ball out quick???? That’s funny becuz I watch every QB we face do it to our defense every week to neutralize JJ and our pass rushing D Line ...... ball out quick so JJ has no chance to even get there........ people stay doing that to us week in and week out quick passes but somehow you telling me our superstar QB can’t do the same???? How does that work )?

Yet most guys who play in the NFL think he is.

Shush.

if only what people think directly impacted what actually happens on the field, you might have something to celebrate.

Unfortunately, on the field, there are at least 15 guys in the NFL playing better than Watson right now. Sorry about that.

I wouldn’t say better I’d say more consistently but then that describes our coaching and play calling as well. At this point I almost wouldn’t care if we were bad because at least then they’d stop getting my hopes up and we could, maybe, look forward to a new coaching staff. This hot and cold stuff though really sucks.

This may have been the worst performance of the year for the OL and Tunsil in particular ….
That trade is looking worse week by week …. At best he's been "average" and today was "Downright Bad."
Watson's inaccuracy issues rearing their ugly head …. must have been 6-7 throws today that were off by just that much ….

Still's going out hurt bigtime.

OB's still OB …. this time he outsmarted himself.

The defense has been better than expected …. Mercilus is going to play his way out of the Texans price range if he keeps this up.

Texans hold true to form , find a way to lose …. 18 years and counting.

Its time to break out the pink soap.

Take those homer glasses off and look at the results produced by the offense in the two home games against teams starting backup QB's.

13 points against the Jaqs.
10 points against the Panthers.

Great QB's don't have performances like that on a routine basis and this has been routine - aside from two drives against NO and a quarter against the Chargers.

Watson missed throws all day against the Panthers. He couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with a shotgun at point blank range. An inch or two here , and inch or two there …. must have been 6-7 throws that were just a little bit off that if they are on target , this game is dramatically different.

I'm waiting for you to tell me how great Tunsil was today ….

Everybody can be excused for one off day.
This one was squarely on O'Brien.

Aaron Rodgers has had plenty of games like that. Patrick Mahomes just played an awful game and yet his scheme helped that team win. Tom Brady had multiple games like this last year. I don’t get reactionary after games about player performances. That is for casual fans who don’t understand football.

The fact you ignore post I quoted you on until after a loss .

We have the on-field personnel, just not the leadership on the sidelines.
This one was on O'Brien.

You won’t find a fan that dislikes bigger BoB more than me. Yes - he is the biggest problem and his play calling is abysmal far too often. But he didn’t give up all those sacks, he didn’t throw that dumb pass by Hopkins, and he’s not the one holding the ball counting up to 10 Mississippi like Watson does.

He’s the one who assembled those players. He’s the one who fails to take advantage of their strengths thus not giving them the best chance to succeed. He’s the one who called that stupid WR pass. Sure, players are responsible for execution, but it doesn’t help when you’re coached poorly and are rarely put in positions to help you succeed.

Man Bill O'Brien was begging and hoping the defense would bail him and his piss poor offense out. Unfortunately they couldn't overcome the horrible play calling, horrendous challenges and terrible clock management. Bill's offense came out stale and lethargic yet again. I can't believe some jokers on here are actually trying to sat otherwise. Crazy

The defense bailed him out several times as did two of those beautiful long punts.
Our biggest problem right now is that teams only need to blitz us to win.
This coaching staff needs to rectify that immediately.

So Watson didn't leave plays on the field ? Receivers weren't open and he didn't miss them ?

Look , I'm an OB hater , president of the club! …. but this one is squarely on Watson.

When your QB leaves 6-7 plays on the field , that's huge - its 11% of the Texans total offensive plays in that game. You hit half of those and it changes the complexion of the entire game.

OB made one very poor play call ….

Agree that DW4 had an off day but he was not given the chance to get into a rhythm.
We all know what he is capable of but his OC is just not up to par I'm afraid.
Right now his biggest problem is the never ending blitzkrieg teams are bringing against him and the coaching staff cannot overcome it.
And you only need an average blitz to give our oline fits - hell, even 4 or 3 man blitzes can embarrass us!
Totally unacceptable.

Agreed. There are big problems with team and it’s destined for the usual mediocrity or worse. At least we have the hope and promise that comes from drafting good young talent. Oh wait.

My biggest takeaway is that Bill OBrien is still making the same coaching mistakes in year 6 that he did in year 1 and that overshadows ANYTHING that the players did on the field.

Bill OBrien costs his teams 1-2 games a year with bad decision making. UNACCEPTABLE!!!

if he doesnt get cute with a stupid ass "trick" play that didnt trick anyone, with a GOAL TO GO situation we probably win, but instead it gets picked off, blindsides the team, they lose momentary focus and momentum and the panthers go down the field to score. Ballgame.

yes Deshaun "could have done this, could have done that blah blah blah" Dont call that dumb ass play and you win, I mean seriously how hard is it? Arent you happy with your new Dollar General running backs? Use them man.

How about the explanation for why he challenged the catch by DMC??? "ummmmm well I knew it was a catch, buuut I thought that when he slid he was down" SMH. infuriating.

Mediocrity is the worst case , OB will still be around …. a worse outcome than that to the season might just rid us of OB.

Then we can search for a coach and a GM in the offseason and let the water boy select the draft picks..

To me this game confirms the fear I started having after we struggled so hard against the Jags even though the week before we went toe to toe with the Saints in their backyard. We are a roller coaster team. Some would say we're the laughing stocks of the NFL, we're not that title goes to Miami, but what we are is the Jekyll and Hyde of the NFL. Teams don't fear us but they don't underestimate us either because they never know what they are going to face. If they face the team that took on the Chargers and Saints then they are facing a tough team that can beat even the elite teams. If they face the team that took on the Jags and Panthers then all they have to do is play decent football and not make any stupid mistakes.

Sadly its looking more and more like without some big change, new HC, a real GM, a real OC being forced on BoB, hell even a new Oline coach maybe, we are going to keep switching back and forth between the meek Jekyll and the killer Hyde. Even with bad play calling there is to much talent on this team and to many other teams that are just flat out bad for Texans to drop below 17 or 18 or rise above 24 or 25 in the draft, so we are going to stay stuck as is.

I've said for months now that in my book this is the do or die season for BoB as a HC and I've seen teams completely change after the bye week but frankly I'm not holding my breath and thinking its very much more die than do this season.

We saw more Hyde & Duke together formations today. I wonder why. Did O'Brien see something he thought he could exploit or did he think this was the perfect opportunity to try some new sht.

I really do think it was because of the Stills injury. You didn't see it before he went down and even the announcers noticed it and said something to that affect

You meant "rectumfy", didn't ya? :brando::smiliepalm:

My first take away is, "Same old Texans." They seem to fall to the level of their competition far too often. Other than that same old stale feeling I am getting tired of since the Oilers days I had a few others:

O'Brien is a mediocre coach AT BEST. His challenges are perplexing (okay, they are asinine), and game planning is just putrid. How often do we come out of the gates stale on the offensive side since his tenure? Far too often for an offensive coach.

Watson is trying too hard. I love the guy and think he's definitely a franchise guy but he's putting too much on his play and thinking he needs to always get the ball to the receivers. Check it down more, use the tight tends and even sometimes just go ahead and run for some yards if the receivers can't seem to separate. Coaching helps with this. Get him into a rhythm with more quick throws. Why do we use slants so seldom when they actually work yet use WR screens like they have produced us much of anything?

That brings up the other point. Our freaking receivers can't separate or the scheme calls for such predictable patterns they are easily covered. I know a lot of the time that I and probably even others scream, "Throw the ball!" but then I wonder is there even anyone to throw to? Fuller is pure speed. His route running still needs development. Coaching should know this. Where are the slants with him? Out and up? Drag routes? Simple things that make a DB try to stick with him? Honestly, we have Hop and Stills who are the better route runners on the team. Coutee is still a work in progress. That is still enough to where these guys should be schemed open. In fact, this is a rather talented receiving corps but they can't get open? Something doesn't add up.

Duke Johnson. We gave up a 3rd round pick yet don't use the guy who is probably one of the better receiving backs in the entire league. Why is that? I watched the Saints last night run the same damn screen about four times and it netted positive yardage. No, not silly receiver screens because all day I saw those get blown the hell up by defenses. By running back ones. Johnson is fast and has great hands. Get him involved with more screens, have him come out of the backfield like CMC did making a LB actually try to stick with him across the field, etc. Have him chip block then slip out for a hitch or quick check down.

Defensively were better. We didn't do the cushion coverage too often and mixed it up more. Roby has been better than I expected thus far. The Watt missed sack killed us but it was a good play by Allen. Defensive players only have a certain window to make a hit on a quarterback so can't go too low, can't go too high. So Allen ducked under it and kept the play going. Defense did enough for us to win this game. Easily. Those turnovers should have been made touchdowns and the offense just look lethargic.

Not sure why we aren't using our run game more when Hyde is being productive and if you give Johnson a slither of a hole he has the speed to capitalize. We have two backs with a differing style that can make an effect and utilizing them could help slow down the pass rush.

tldr….the offense shat the bed. There is WAY too much talent on that side (well except on the line for the most part) for them to not put up at least 20 a game and that's not even counting with the turnovers the defense made.

Coaching took away what Watson does best and what defenses feared. Watson legs.

I agree they need to rectify this as quickly as possible.

Just re-watching on Fast Forward mode after going to the game Watson overthrew Fuller twice for what would have been easily 2 TD's. Fuller had separation and would have taken them both to the house. So to me, it's on Watson. I hate to say it because I love the guy but his accuracy was suspect yesterday. And If I'm not mistaken he overthrew someone else, too, can't recall. But the Fuller ones are obvious because he's so blazingly fast

Even the great Tom Brady was horrendous on yesterday day. His numbers were F up too. But the OC has to find other ways to get the job done. Bill O'Brien didn't do that. You see your young quarterback struggling, so run the freaking ball, throw in a lot more screen plays.

So this skit is not just on Watson, it's on him and Bill O'Brien.

Some observations from this, and the previous games
1. The offensive plays are from a playbook that has proven not to be NFL (or major college program) quality.
2. The defensive plays cannot cover against a team willing to take 5 - 10 yd passes with the occasional longer play thrown in - the10 yd cushion will not stop that. This puts all kinds of pressure on the D Line to control the game,
which isn't happening.
The coaching staff is like a fish - it rots from the head down. How many teams would have BOB, the OC, RAC or the OL coach as their first choice if they were available? Major changes are needed.
