Even though the cap goes up every year, so do the massive contracts top players demand. I wish the NFL did away with the salary cap. Imagine that, not being handicapped by the cap...Cal has the money to pay all of our top guys, let the scrubs walk, and offer a good amount of cash to those good players wanting a change of scenery.

Then it just becomes what MLB was for so long, the battle of the billionaires. That's why the Yankees dominated for so long and still are in the running every year because you pretty much just buy championships. I like that smaller cities like Kansas City or Tampa Bay or Oakland can still field a SB winning team even if they don't have the money of an Allen. Likewise the cap does keep player requests somewhat realistic, otherwise guys like Rogers would be demanding a 100 million every year.
I understand this, there will be plenty of cap space to sign the guys at the premium positions. I don't get why people constantly worry about this. Good news is the ol is on cheap contracts for yrs, minus Tunsil and Martin. I still don't understand the Martin signing.

They just need to restructure the salary cap rules. I would allow one "Franchise player" signing on both offense and defense, where teams can lock up their best offensive player (QB) and a top defender to contracts that don't effect the cap.

I could be wrong but just from a casual observer it seems the players union and the NFL get along much worse than their counter parts in MLB and the NBA. Like I said I could be wrong on this but if so it may explain why things like the franchise tag and how trading/signing players are such a mess everything year for a lot of teams
That's the problem. You have to spend it wisely & so far, we don't. Releasing Quinn to make room for Reed. Paying guys like Winston hoping he can be what we want him to be. Giving Fitzpatrick a raise after being cut by Tennessee.

The contract they gave him they had no choice and people forget Denver was matching us dollar for dollar. The real reason we got Brock over Denver was he didn’t give Elway a chance to match our last offer because he was pissed about them waiting on Manning before talking to him. As for what we spent to get rid of him I have a theory as to why that was but if we just look at the facts as they are known then yeah it makes no sense.

I’ve said multiple times I think they went after a Osweiler because all of BoBs hand picked QBs sucked so McNair told Smith get a damn QB no matter what it took.

Ok I can see your point and in that light I agree with you, but I would counter with I wasn't responding to the flow of discussion as I was the post I quoted. The way forums work on all the ones I've been on in the past is that if you are responding to the overall theme you don't quote anybody and just post, if you are responding to a certain post to agree, counter point, expand on, etc. then you quote that person and make your response.
Honestly with how quickly and often entire threads get side tracked around here I'm not sure it's possible to always keep up with the flow of discussions.

I would like to add Carlos Hyde, Duke Johnson and Darren Fells. It's only been a brief time but cornerbacks Hargreaves and Conley are looking pretty good so far. All including Tunsil are greatly this year's cap hits.
Duke/Conley/Hargreaves are under contract. Hargreaves has an option to pick up, but they have plenty of cap space. Fells/Hyde should be fairly cheap to retain.
He did pretty good with Munch in Tackville.
Honestly how do you know that ? I dunno because if he did so well why is he not still coaching with Munchack or coaching somewhere else ?

I keep on hearing head scratching and full-blown criticism of our GM not having locked up Tunsil with a long-term contract "pre-arranged" or negotiated immediately following the trade. Those people may want to rethink their criticism and may want to remember what's coming up in 2021..............like, the new CBA.
Agents for very high profile players especially are telling their clients, if their contracts did not end by 2020, they should not sign new contracts until after the new CBA is in place.............as the team salary caps and player potential revenues are anticipated to be bumped significantly.

Thank you CnD, this is what I keep saying. It’s not just the Texans that have a say in this, if a player flat out says they aren’t going to sign a new deal yet what are you going to do? People were praising Dak for saying he wanted to wait and shown he deserved to reset the market, it bit him in the ass but at the time everyone was on board.
Texans address what everyone knows is their biggest weakness and they do it with a guy that is still on a rookie contract for 2 years and then the tag after but everyone is acting like they should have held a gun to his head and made him sign. Of course none of these people have an answer as to what they should have done that wouldn’t have resulted in Watson getting sacked 60+ times again.
Love the double standard, Watson is the future of the franchise and everyone should get out of his way so he can lead us to the football promise land. What’s that, you spend our precious draft picks to get him the best protection on the market? Blasphemy, protecting him isn’t worth ruining our draft night parties.

So gents why are some of y’all acting like it’s far-fetched to think Tunsil would want to get extended two years earlier. If agents are telling their clients to wait then why are some players getting extended right now?

I get your point but your examples are not the best. JJ was handed a 6 year contract which is pretty rare in the NFL because of how quickly injuries can happen and frankly players usually don’t want to stay locked in that long. It’s part of the reason I’m hoping he will go with a team friendly contract next time because he seems to like sticking with Houston, both team and city, rather than chasing money or rings.
Wentz signed a nice deal seeing as there are still questions about him. He and the Eagles haven’t exactly lit the world on fire this season, that a hell of an understatement, and don’t forget it was actually Foles that led the Eagles to their SB win not Wentz. Even still that much guaranteed money is insane though I figure it’s about to become standard.
Thompson was overpaid, flat out. He hasn’t been worth that kind of money this season and I’m guessing the Pants are banking on it being Riverboat Ron’s change to a 3-4 that messed him up. Personally if a linebacker has that much trouble switching schemes I wouldn’t drop that kind of money on him but hey it’s the Pants so.....yeah.
No one is saying contracts aren’t being signed but that doesn’t change the fact that big name players at high dollar positions are being told to hold off. We already saw Raiders throw stupid money at Brown so if I was Tunsil’s agent I’d send them a gift basket this X-mas. Likewise if I was Watson’s agent for each of the 12 days of Xmas I’d add a zero onto his price tag.
If we as fans with no insider information are seeing these prices go up and know that certain players are going to want and get big contracts you know those agents do. If not from the team they are on then some other dumbass with to big a checkbook and to small a brain.

Maverick that’s true but some of these big name players are told the opposite of that as well. Tunsil agent could very well be telling him to get ready to cash in after this season. Especially seeing players like Brown and Solders cash in. Plus knowing he’s better than the both of them. Also factoring in the fact that our Texans are/will be desperate. It’s a must to keep Watson backside protected. And it’s a must to keep that entire line intact.

You could very well be right. I think the main point is that it wasn’t bad business on the Texans part that they didn’t sign Tunsil to a new contract it was he had them over a barrel. We can argue all day who is at fault for the team being in that position but ultimately it doesn’t matter any more.
Watson had to be protected, a rookie wasn’t going to cut it, Miami had the player and a willingness to deal and odds are a Tunsil or his agent said they weren’t signing yet and talk to them in a year or two.

I think the whole point is this will be a bad deal if Tunsil leaves after his contract ends next season. If the Texans were willing to pay this much in a trade, they should have known they're willing to break the bank to re-sign him. Now maybe this isn't legal? Maybe you can enlighten me? But is it possible for the Texans to say, "We only accept this deal if Tunsil is willing to sign this extension?" It seems like that's what happened in the Mack trade.

The thing about the Mack trade is Chicago didn’t need him, he just helped to make a good defense elite. At the time they still had dreams of Trubisky being their QB of the future and the defense just insuring that it didn’t have to be a high scoring game. Texans are offensively built and the lynch pin of that offense is Watson. Which means protecting his blind side is just as, if not more, important as giving him targets to throw to.
Not sure why everyone is talking like Tunsil is going to leave as though it’s a foregone conclusion. Could it happen, sure but so could Watt leaving or Watson or Brady leaving the Pats or Dak leaving, or getting run out of, Dallas. Denver sure as hell never thought Osweiler would jump. Anything can happen when a contract is up but Texans money spends just as well as any other team’s and there are a lot of reasons players like playing in Texas. No income tax being a big one.
I believe Texans will pony up the cash when needed, they did with Hopkins and Watt, but why break the bank 2 or even 3 years before you have to? If you can get a SB in that 2 years window then it’s all worth it.

None of the examples you have listed presented the circumstances surrounding the upcoming new CBA.
Watt.........I was not talking about whether a player could or could not have their contract extended before their contract is up............the decision for Watt's early contract extension in 2014 was entirely unaffected by the new CBA in 2021
Wentz...........guaranteed monies ended by 2019................couldn't wait for the new CBA in 2021
Thompson............was playing this year under the 5th year option.................his contract and any guaranteed monies was up this year..............again couldn't wait for the new CBA in 2021
Tunsil............because the Dolphins exercised the 5th year option, his contract runs through 2020 with him getting a tidy salary of $10.5 mil next season...........he and his agent can wait...........they always had the leverage
