Pre-season...Game 3...Dallas Cowboys!

Houston is one of the best football cities in the country with sophisticated fan base. It is a curse that we have had NFL teams that are on par with Detroit in being the least successful team in the league sharing a state with a team up north that is an NFL blue blood with 5 Super Bowl trophies.

We could see with our own eyes that that team last year was extremely lucky with both the schedule and turnover differential and that it was not going to do jack **** in the playoffs despite winning 11 games. This team had a terrible draft and free agency and didn’t fill glaring holes. We are the laughingstock of the NFL with a drunk, moron of an owner that Steelb nailed by naming him Cletus. I have never seen this city as pissed off, disinterested and ready to revolt against this garbage team that unfortunately plays in our town. It’s pathetic that what I am hoping for a midseason firing of buttchin because there is no hope we will do any damage in the playoffs if we are able to squeak in. Houston needs to show what we really think of this franchise by booing the **** out of them when they suck at home, not buying tickets and merch and burning up the phone lines, sports talk, social media, etc tearing Cletus and buttchin a new asshole every day.
Dallas won those SB before the Texans came into existence and lately they don't even contend for a championship in the NFL.
"Sophisticated fan base" me eye ! There's quite a few knowleagable NFL guys on this Board but the fan base in general is pretty ignorant and unenthuisiastic.
When a third of the crowd dosen't show up until after KO, and when they continue to yell and cheer when the home team has the ball so the line can't hear the QB snap calls, and when half he stadium leaves before the game is over that's not a very impressive crowd we have at NRG?Reliant.

McClain was just on the radio and said he thinks they started him to see if he had improved because it was between him and RJ for the swing tackle position.

He thinks he's a potential cut.
What I've been thinking. If Kalil is not the cut, then swing tackle is between Johnson and Davenport. But if Johnson is named the started, then it's between Davenport and Kalil.

If it's between Rod & Davenport for S-T then sounds like they settled on Kalil as the LT starter ?

Yeah, reading this crap just shows how sophisticated our fan base really is.

I don't think anything's been decided yet. Too many things still in flux.
1. Kalil could be part of a trade
2. Obrien waiting and trying mixes to give other teams film for other trades.

A guard and a Pittsburgh OT went down this weekend. Perhaps more that I have not heard of yet. What we see as inadequate players , other teams could see as a salvageable project and trade us something. We have nothing to lose. Next week final roster could become more obvious.

That's crazy. I get that Davenport and Lamm aren't that good, but they are certainly better than Kalil/Seantrel.

Sheesh, what is it with downgrading mediocre players to even worse players with O'Brien?

It never ends as it is. The same cycle repeats on this MB..(insert HC/GM here) is an idiot & doesn't know what he's doing b/c he didn't make this move, didn't start this guy over this guy, didn't draft this player & almost every single time the same folks calling the HC/GM stupid get proven wrong. But by that time, they've moved on to the next "dumb" person.

I would just like to point out that O'Brien is ONLY 4 games over .500 at this point. He's not anywhere near great, and he's not even good. He's literally the definition of average.

All our coaches combined have given us the stellar W-L record of 121-151. How are they proven "wrong" in your opinion? We've had garbage at HC/GM for the entirety of the organization. (Not every decision is bad....just the overall decision making process seems to be flawed) We've had some great players that have had their talent squandered due to various reasons. We currently have 3/(4 if you count Clowney) players that are ultra talented having their prime years squandered.

It's the "rah rah everything is great" guys that are constantly proven wrong. "Yeah, but we went 11-5 last year!!" Okay...but we went 4-12 the year before that. The prior 3 years, O'Brien was 3 games over going 9-7 each time. Average.

I get it, we all want the best for the team. I think the "rah rah guys" see the flaws this team/coaching staff has, they just want to be optimistic that everything will work out. Others just post their realistic takes of what they see and that's where the animosity lies.

No, the literal definition of avg. would be a .500 record...you acknowledge he's 4 games above .500 which technically would make him above avg. lol. Noone has said he's great, not even those ya'll label as his defenders.

You're proving my point. For the last 5 years ya'll have come in forecasting doom & gloom expecting the bottom to fall out & only in 1 of those years under BoB has it actually happened. Sure, 9-7 isn't something to write home about, but you know what, It sure beats the hell out of 4-12 & your season being over by October. I suppose if you cry wolf long enough you'll eventually come out right, but jesus christ man, the way some of you guys go on about what's wrong with this team, you would think that we had no players with talent to squander....which by the way is a pretty common thing in the NFL period.

It's you guys who act as if the sky is falling every year that really make being a fan of this team a bummer & quite honestly make posting on this messageboard less enjoyable with each passing day.

Guys like you being so acceptive of mediocrity and then taking shots at guys like him, doesn't make it much better.

Lol what do u mean? this a fan messageboard...that’s short for fanatic. So being optimistic is part of the criteria.

Just b/c I choose to look on the brighter side of things doesn’t mean I “accept” mediocrity. It just means Im more accepting of the fact that anything can happen over the course of a season....like a 9 game win streak after an 0-3 start....:cowboy1:

And how many times does Lucy snatching the ball away from you does it take? Doesn't mean we aren't fans, we are or we wouldn't be here.

I think it would be better to focus all our negative energy on that browneye looking thing in BO'bs chin.

Lucy snatches that ball from 30 of 31 teams every year...that’s part of the elation of the release when your team finally does wins it all. But if u find yourself feeling like you gotta ***** about every damn thing they do that u don’t like & they frustrates u that much, then u probably should just stop watching.

My opinion of course.

That’s fine....until you totally tune out of what it is that’s holding this franchise back, and go off on people who point that out. Yeah it gets annoying day after day, week after week, year after year, but it is what it is.

Hoping the Texans overcome all the obstacles and get to the SB is one thing. I hope that every damn year. But there’s nothing wrong with people pointing out why it never comes close to happening.

The 9 game win streak was unbelievable last year, but at no point did I ever feel like this team was a true contender, and that’s because of how they’re run. I hoped they could continue the magic somehow, but reality finally set in. And that reality is they’re coached by a man who can beat up on the bad to mediocre and drive that win total up, but he can’t find a way to beat the good teams.

Bill O’Brien is mediocre. And he’s been mediocre for 5 years. And if he stays here much longer slapping together o-lines of has beens and never wills, we’re going to have a 40 mile long thread about Watson retiring prematurely.

The OB model is a tired, boring brand of football. That shouldn’t be the case with an exciting young QB. There’s better out there.

You good sir give OB too much credit IMO.

He beats up on bad teams

He barely escapes mediocre teams at times

His predecessor was mediocre but competent, he is the lower end of mediocre IMO.

I was happy to see his predecessor go, I will be doing over weight man cartwheels when he is finally gone.

9 game winning streak against so-so competition and then getting drubbed in the first round.....again....

Don’t ignore in victory what you wouldn’t in defeat.

Agreed, but winning 9 games in a row in the NFL almost never happens.

That team went as far as their talent took them.

The reason this team is 4 games over .500 during the OB tenure has nothing to do with OB and everything to do with the defenses RC rolled out there week to week. OB's offenses have never carried this team. The only time OB's offense looked like it had potential.....the period in which he changed his offense and gave Watson an offense he was more familiar with. Then OB went back to tinkering and totally ducked the momentum. The hopes for a solid season rest squarely on the shoulders of RC and his defense. The lack of an OL for the umpteenth season and OB's brainchild of an offense means it's going to be a tough start of the season. This may make it impossible to regroup for a seasonal mid-season push that results in saving OB's job.

To be fair, 3 out of the 11 wins should have been losses, had the opposing kickers gotten the game winning field goal in. But they missed, and pretty much won the games for us. That reminds me; we owe them guys each a bottle of whiskey! Actually, O’Brien owes them gift baskets and thank you cards. Those kickers pretty much saved his ass.

So do other teams win by who they're playing missing fg's? BTW odds are against kickers making 55 + yd fg's. Which is what happened in Denver and Washington.

Hmmm. So the negatives on this forum have assigned all personnel moves to OB and have made him totally responsible for our wins and losses. No problem. Just don’t forget he’s responsible for our D then. I’ve seen some great moves made on the DL and LB and especially at S. He made it a media point that he was not happy with the CB position and has made it a mission to get taller and faster there. Lonnie Johnson at least early on is showing everyone why. Just brought in another 6’2” guy to look at. So kudos to his construction of our D. BTW, wonder what kind of coach RAC would have looked like last year if our entire DL was injured, backups filling those slots, and our shorter, slower CB’s were left even more on an island?

You could also argue that he's "only" 4 games over .500 b/c of that shitty 2017 the defense had. It goes both ways. Ridiculous how you guys like to reinvent history & only delve into detail about anything unless it fits your narratives.

Ridiculous assertion. I guess TB12 should have 2-3 less rings considering Vinatieri hit 3 go ahead winners for the pats in the SB....oh, and dock him another ring he got due to Pete Carroll throwing the ball on the 1 yd line instead of running beast mode up the middle...

pointing out what? that the team has weaknesses? That we don't have Vince Lombardi roaming our sidelines? Join the club! every team has weaknesses. Im also pretty sure there's only 1 team in the league that has a HC that's even remotely close to being considered in the same class as Lombardi.

You know what else is tired & boring? Fans claiming that if we just had this "one thing" here, we could be good. Many of the same lot here bitching about BoB are the same ones that were bitching about Kubiak & were bitching about the qb situation.

There's better out there. Funny, b/c that same sentiment is what brought BoB here in the 1st place. That same sentiment of "anybody but Fitz, Hoyer, Mallet" is what brought Oz here too.....Fact is fans always think this.....until they look up 1 season and realize they are on their umpteenth starting qb in 10 years like the Browns, Dolphins and Titans. Or their umpteenth HC in 10 years.......................like the Browns, Dolphins and Titans. Then the complaints will turn to "we need stability...etc..". If you're a front runner & need to "feel" like they're a contender for u to get behind them, then you should just check out................& wait until you start seeing alot of Academy or Mattress Mac promotions all over the place.. b/c that's about as a sure sign that they're contending enough for your liking.

RC was assigned to OB's coaching staff by upper management. I believe RS gave RC plenty of input in regards to the defensive talent he wanted.

OB has owned this offense since he arrived as well as all the decision (except 1) at QB.....maybe 2 b/c I didn't see OB standing and clapping his hands like RS when the team drafted Watson. OB sat there with a look of, I can't believe he just ducking did this.

OB has insisted on being both the HC and OC.....even when he's assigned a flunky to the position of OC. I guess a fall guy for when the record is below expectations. OB and I guess Devlin have made one crappy decision after another in regards to the OL. This doesn't even come close to touching on the inability of Devlin to coach up any of the players he's been given. OB seems to think Devlin's shite don't stink. Are you guys on board with OB's decision to retain Devlin?

The GIF attached by Tex sums up my feeling each and every time OB heads to the podium after a loss. I wish everyone in the press corps would say, how about we just jump to the next question since we've already jotted down the answer you've given far too many times.

My question to OB, why haven't you been able to assemble or coach up an OL since your arrival?

.....and at who's feet would you like to put the blame for the Texans QB carousel? If OB was sold as being the next QB whisperer, where has his whispering gone wrong?

Do yourself a favor and look at the Texans draft history since BoB & RC got here. Most of RC's defensive talent was already here & RS still doubled down to help RC https://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/htx/draft.htm. when the only additions RC really needed was a MLB (McKinney) to eventually replace a hobbled Cushing and another CB opposite of Joseph..which they had in Buoye..but RS let him go. They then wasted a #1 pick on K-jo. So 2 years into BoB's tenure, RS is still using our highest draft picks to fortify a defense that already had a **** ton of talent. Meanwhile on the offensive side, Foster is on his last legs, we're pulling Keenum out of dear blinds and relying on 3 & 4th round picks to attempt to rebuild an already talent deficient offense. The 1st 2 drafts with BoB, there were only 3 offensive players taken in the 1st 3 rounds of each of those drafts......All misses as we know. It wasn't until 2016 was there even a concentrated attempt to add premium talent to the offensive side.

The rest of your post is just largely your opinion...& Ok....

SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHO REGARDED HIM AS A QB WHISPER? You guys keep saying this, but who actually said that he was some qb guru? You want to be upset with someone, be upset with yourself for believing some flunky you heard on the radio or read.

Based on OB telling Keenum he would never be nothing more than a QB3 in the NFL makes me believe that it wasn't OB who pursued Keenum while he was in the deer stand.

never said it was...but lets be clear, Keenum ISN'T more than a back up/qb 3 in the NFL & if we're keeping with the narrative that you guys like to spin with "Smith only brought in the players BoB wanted" well then BoB actually was at least consulted on bringing Keenum back. So regardless of how it went down, Keenum was given another chance under BoB to resurrect his career......Not the guy who drafted him who was up in Denver........BoB did. Without that chance, its just as plausible that BoB is right & Keenum is in the CFL somewhere or out of football entirely.

Dude took the Vikings to the playoffs.
Just named starter for the Redskins to start the year.

Not saying I want him to start on my team, but the dude is still around for a reason.

Yeah, b/c they know he's a capable back up/stop gap qb. There's definitely a market for guys like him. Fitz & McCown are the same thing & somehow they keep winding up starters for a few games for various teams. Like I said, i wish i would've put in the work to have made it to that level at qb. Millionaires many times over just to hold a clipboard and spot start for a few games.

Agreed, but winning 9 games in a row in the NFL almost never happens.

That team went as far as their talent took them.
I agree on the first part. But I can't agree with the 2nd. I understand not winning that play off game. But it's the total ineptitude that I can't excuse.

Not enough talent to advance in the playoffs... I can agree with that.

Total embarrassment at home? Nah, that's not the talent.

To Follow the shifting goalposts is impossible here

Only recently has our D gotten more physical. Gone are the Connor Barwin days. We keep loading up our middle with size and speed and our run D is fun to watch. Doesn’t look like you can play CB or S anymore unless you are a punisher. It’s great how we keep turning up interior DL 330# gems. Chronicle gave accolades the other day to that UDFA giant from Colorado, Houston native I believe.

Yes and no.
Yes, the Broncos shouldn’t have tried the 62-yd FG near the end of the first half.
Instead of pinning the Texans back deep, VJ allowed the Texans the high percentage of kicking the FG.
The 51-yd FG at the end of the game, in the thin air of Denver, has a better than 50% chance of going in.
So , I’d say the Texans were lucky in that game.

I used to be a rah, rah guy.

Yeah, I get it. I was always the realist....but tried to be optimistic about it. I would get so frustrated when they wouldn't do well so I had to take a long step back and just kind of casually watch the games. Though I would still keep up with all the stats and goings on of the team.

And let’s not forget that in the Skins game, the Texans got a 101-yd return for a TD.
They also intercepted Smith at the Texans 24.

Don’t you believe you need to back off and see how this year plays out. We will need big help not having injuries but I want to see how Henderson plays. And Howard and Sharping look like great additions. What about Roderick? Fantastic job of bringing him in and coaching him up right? Let’s see first what he does and the other three do but what if we go a long way to greatly improving four positions on the OL, five if we keep Fulton at C. This is how I view the world. There are interesting developments that bear watching and discussing. Nobody on this board has any control over what this team does but how one approaches the ride makes for better discussions on this forum, IMO.
