I stand corrected, avg. being 45,000 guaranteed. Pick makes even less sense to me then? Remember Gaine calling him one of the most outstanding special team player in the nation, so will slow my role and aggravation not adding more positional depth.
I think we're overthinking it. Who's your favorite UDFA signing? Just pretend they took him in the 7th and Gillaspia was the UDFA. Then, it's all good.

As parallel Colts took OT and Center in 7th rd. Maybe Gillaspia makes immediate impact and special teams actually help win a couple games and we call it worth it. Meanwhile divisional rival OL adds depth on the cheap.
Or maybe Gaine recognizes the likelihood of a 7th round pick sticking on the team past year 1 much less for the duration for a rookie contract is much higher for a player that can excel on special teams than it is for an OL who doesn’t play ST?

Always overthinking, spice in my life. There are so many to choose from even throwing out rest of 7th rd. who were selected. You can always compare to who the Texans signed as undrafted free agents as well.

look this is more special teams player than anything else, I get that but if my target is LB position (which they didn't address, cause we're all good right) here is an undrafted LB picked up by the Falcons, Tre Crawford ILB, 6-3 225, UAB, fits mold of hybrid backers taken in first round to cover TE's, RB's and add explosive pass rushing element. I'm over thinking it yes because always looking for high ceiling, diamonds in the rough.

And we signed Coker as a UDFA for OL. 7th round vs UDFA is not a big deal. We each got what we wanted, low risk, low committment. Keep who can play

That’s fine, Cullen Gillespia not even on my radar. Just looked up his pro day performance and have to admit pretty good. 4.57 forty, 32.5 vertical, 9’4” broad jump, 4.15 3-cone, 6.97 short shuttle, BP 20. That does scream special teams, all around plus athlete. Tre on other hand is plus explosive athletically, similar 40 4.61 and 19 reps but vertical was 42” and broad jump 10.5’. That’s what separates a starting caliber pass rusher with core special teams player.

You asked for example so I just pulled one out my ass. It’s not that hard. This draft was clearly coach driven as they’re trying to draft coachable players who fit scheme and improve roster depth. Key emphasis on depth. None will or could be star players unless it’s the water polo guy, lol

The way I see it, Gillaspia is basically the new James Casey. He'll be a fullback and ST's guy early on, but if he maxes out his potential and picks up the playbook I could see him sprinkled in the H-back role occasionally in the offense in a couple years.

Worst-case scenario he's Jay Prosch 2.0 and is replaced after two or three seasons. Either way it was a 7th round pick. Not anything to get bent outta shape over. Nobody's really talking or gives a hoot about Jermaine Kelly, but I guess he's not an A&M local kid.

Until this organization places more value in all it’s asserts, including 7th rd picks (who can forget Mr. Irrelevant) it’s like putting a cap on expectations and condenses talent pool.

The odds of finding viable OL in mid-rounds is already a tall task.. I don't think a 7th rounder is gonna strike any fear and terrorize the division for years...
Essentially it's the equivalent of that Baylor Center we took years ago, who I can't even remember his name..

Clearly they are putting more value in all it's assets. Hence why ST improved significantly and the depth of roster as a whole is much improved last 2 offseasons. No need to make a blanket statement because their full time scouting department who do this **** year round identified someone you didn't.

I won't argue with you on wanting to hit on all of your picks, (obviously) it's just that 7th round picks are such a low-success rate anyway. To use that pick on someone we can say should upgrade ST's play and at the very least have a bit role at fullback is a good investment in team value in my opinion.

Were there other guys I wanted? Sure. With that said of all the other players that were drafted after Gillaspia, the only guy I liked was Kaden Elliss. (Saints) Everyone else I liked went undrafted, so I'm not going to pretend I am some expert even though I do put A LOT of time and studying of draft prospects every year to pass the bloody boring-ness of the offseason.

When your the worst at something like special teams, eventually through focus, hard work, coaching changes and more investment it’s bound to get better.

Far as their bang up scouting department they lost me from first round on and never relented and I watched the Senior Bowl half a dozen times, from which they pulled four picks.

Brother you have got to stop attacking everything that moves. There is a lot of history on this site and some of the very people you attack are the same ones that have in past made the exact arguments you are making. Chill out, get a feel for the people around here and realize they are more than just the few posts you have seen since you joined a month ago. Lot of people still pissed about the Colts game and now the draft so you are seeing a lot of that anger and seem to be thinking that's how everyone is all the time. At least go through a full season on here before lashing out.
(Brother), I did nothing than present another angle on Cullen Gil. I was accused of being a “Pom Pom Boy”. By a MODERATOR. Really? I can’t express an opinion on the TEXANS BOARD in favor of the current state of the Texans without being accused by a MODERATOR? This isn’t Amerikan politics. Nobody should be accused of being a Pom Pom Boy by saying hold off with the sick criticisms of a new regime in its first year, thus my comment that we are in our FIRST year, not the sixth year of this regime. Six years in and nothing changed you will hear a different me. I don’t care what you poor souls went through. I was a fan then, just didn’t log in. Wanna know why? What have you guys changed? I see the first real change I’ve seen in years and you are missing the fun of analyzing it. You guys set the tone of this board by thinking our first premise is ALWAYS negative. I disagree Brother. “He’s a real big kid," safety Justin Reid said. "He’s a big kid, almost bigger than me. You see it when he plays. You see it on the practice film. He knows how to use it as well, which is one of the good things about having good corners, is they know how to actually body receivers, especially if they’re going against a big guy. He’s someone that we can see as a potential matchup for those type of situations.”

You can do that with Emanuel Hall UDFA WR this year or Vyncint Smith last year... or even Dylan Cole. Good athletes fall or don’t get drafted at all every year. Sometimes for valid reasons.

So Pom Pom fan = don’t sell yourself short? You know as well as I do that Pom pom fan or any similar term on this board is derogatory...and this is a FAN forum. Look, I don't ever make any pronouncements as to which player we should have drafted or who is better etc, especially with rookies. I’m simply interested in the rebuilding aspect of this team. The whys and how’s. This has been a long time coming. Was a RS fan until, against almost impossible odds, we blew a #1seed playoff spot and were blown out again by the Pats. I knew that regime was nowhere near figuring it out...and the next season proved it. This is our do over and we haven’t even started year two yet. It might not be enough but that irrelevant because it’s an unknown. The only way we get to the SB starts right here and will disappoint the instant gratification types but refusing to jump on everything anyone connected with this team is trying to accomplish in this past year without hearing about it doesn’t get any sympathy from me. Just because someone has been dumb enough to log on and ***** for years doesn’t give them any special rights in my book. I’m a rookie, I get it but I’ll take my lumps my way.

I'm not someone that blames BoB for everything but I will say you can't claim this is a "do over" or a clean slate when we still have the same coaching staff. RS wasn't the only one that blew that season, in fact you could argue he had the least to do with it since once the season starts its kind of the coaches job to win with the team he has. That is what is annoying me at least, won't speak for others, is you are acting like BoB had none of the blame for anything that has gone wrong. Hell many of our Oline problems can be blamed on Devlin who BoB insists on keeping as the Oline coach.

McClain's Mailbag: How much has Texans' Deshaun Watson improved?

John McClain , Houston Chronicle May 31, 2019

I've been impressed with what I've seen of the Texans at the two OTAs the media has been allowed to watch. I try to keep an eye on veteran free agents, draft choices, second-year players, players returning from injuries and, most importantly, quarterback Deshaun Watson.

On our weekly show that airs at 6 p.m. Thursdays on Sports Radio 610, I told Marc Vandermeer this week that — in practice Wednesday – Watson reminded me of Warren Moon. Vandy said his sidekick, John Harris, said the same thing. Harris and I hadn't compared notes, so I think it was an interesting and accurate observation.

Of all the quarterbacks I've covered, none threw a more beautiful ball than Moon. The spin, the touch and the accuracy were so consistent. Watching Watson throw corner routes to receivers reminded me of Moon. The passes were perfect. Such impressive touch!

Q: How much have you seen Deshaun Watson improve in this year's OTAs compared to 2018? — Rick T.

A: He's making remarkable improvement, Rick. This is his third season, and it's obvious to everyone he's comfortable and confident in Bill O'Brien's system. He's developing a good working relationship with new quarterbacks coach Carl Smith. He's worked with new offensive coordinator Tim Kelly for three years. And, of course, Watson and O'Brien have a terrific relationship. Here's something to consider: As a rookie, Watson played behind Tom Savage in the offseason program. He worked mostly with the backups. Last year, Watson was coming off major knee surgery, and he was limited in OTAs, so he didn't do 11-on-11 work. This year, he's doing everything. Think about how much farther along he is at this stage. That's got to benefit him in September.

Q: Is receiver Will Fuller's ACL tear a concern about a possible decrease his speed? — Ryan W.

A: Fuller is on the same timetable as Deshaun Watson last season, Ryan. He should be ready to go full-speed sometime in August and will be ready for the opener at New Orleans. The surgery and recovery have gone well. He's expected to return as fast as ever and give Watson a big-time deep threat again. By the way, in Fuller's 11 games with Watson, he's caught 11 touchdown passes. The Texans really need Fuller opposite DeAndre Hopkins.

Q: Who are the sleepers for the Texans, and who do you think will be the most surprising cut? — Stephen W.

A: Based on what I've seen and heard, Stephen, my sleepers at this early stage are defensive end Charles Omenihu (fifth round) and receiver Johnnie Dixon (undrafted). Omenihu might come off the bench and give them an inside pass rusher who plays the run well. Dixon might have a chance to become the fifth receiver and a possible return man. As for the most surprising cut, if they don't play better than last season, left tackle Julién Davenport or cornerback Aaron Colvin. This is Davenport's third season. He should be used to NFL competition. He's valuable because he can play both sides and started last season, but if veteran free agent Matt Kalil is healthy and plays well, they could keep him instead. As for Colvin, he was outstanding at Jacksonville but a disappointment in his first season with the Texans. Part of it was an injury. Competing with him inside will be veteran free agent Briean Boddy-Calhoun and sixth-round pick Xavier Crawford.

Q: How much better do you expect the Texans' offensive line will be with Tytus Howard? — Kenny N.

A: I think the line will be a lot better, Kenny, and not just because of Howard, the first-round pick. I've said on Sports Radio 610 that I believe there's a 90 percent chance Howard will be the starting left tackle in the opener at New Orleans. But they also drafted right tackle Max Scharping in the second round. Right tackle Seantrel Henderson has returned from season-ending surgery after the first game last season. They signed veteran left tackle Matt Kalil, who's still rehabbing from a knee injury that cost him last season at Carolina. Martinas Rankin begins his second season and moves inside to guard.

Q: The Texans should hire Bruce Matthews to help coach the Texans' offensive line. Winning is about using all the resources available to you all the time. Bruce is a fountain of knowledge about offensive line play. We have invested in physical talent. Now let's invest in coaching knowledge. It's a win/win situation for everyone. I bet he'd jump at the chance to get back in the game. We need him. —Jack C.

A: I'm not sure Bruce would want to devote the time it takes to be an assistant coach, Jack. He and wife Carrie try to attend Atlanta Falcons games to watch their son Jake play left tackle. And they watch their youngest son Luke play guard for the Aggies. Bruce worked for the Texans under Gary Kubiak before he left to join Mike Munchak's staff at Tennessee. I believe he's pretty busy being a father, grandfather, football fan — not to mention a husband.

Demaryius Thomas Thankful To Be Alive After Crash, 'I Could Have Been Gone"

Demaryius Thomas says his violent car crash earlier this year scared the hell of him ... telling TMZ Sports he could have DIED after he flipped his SUV in Denver back in February.

"I could have been gone," the NFL star receiver says.

As we previously reported ... Thomas was doing 70 MPH in a 30 at around 12:20 AM on Feb. 16 when he lost control of his SUV and crashed it into a curb.

A witness says he saw Thomas' car flip several times in the air ... and the pics we obtained from the accident show the gnarly scene.

Its not technically the team board though. This is a splintered cell of guys who used to run/contribute at the team site before it got a software update? hell I dont know. What I do know is that if you dont bend over and take the hazing then its normally a rough introductory period. Its a tight knit good ol' boy network and it gets pretty nauseating at times, but you can make it a good experience by just filtering out who you think you can actually hold an adult conversation with without the insults and childish idioms. There are some really smart dudes here on both sides of hot topics that can express themselves well and offer great talking points.

Maybe I missed it but I don't recall any "hazing" when I first got here. Of course I also just came to talk football and to discuss things and tried to keep arguing, blind negativity/positivity and pissing contests to a minimal. Didn't always succeed at that but I'm usually having fun. Of course I've only been here about 3 years so maybe that's not considered long enough either. My experience with most on here has been they treat you like you treat them and very rarely is something personal. I've had more than a few on here that I'm arguing like a episode of the People's Court with them in one thread and in another agreeing with everything they say.

Agreed about BOB/Devlin

With that said, you can only work with the talent on hand and after 2 regimes and 12 yr one thing is sure, the former GM wasn't good enough at accruing talent to bring a Lombardi to Kirby.

SOTT Mailbag: Which Rookies Are Making an Early Impression for the #Texans? https://t.co/DCdkGZwWbX via @SOTTexans

— State of the Texans (@SOTTexans) May 31, 2019

Rookies are always the prime discussion early when OTAs hits and here are my early five that stand out.

Tytus Howard (OL) due to his athleticism and he looks the part of being a NFL offensive lineman. Now he is going to have to show it when the pads are put on during training camp.

Lonnie Johnson Jr. (CB) is an imposing presence as a cornerback. Mentioned it before, the Texans have never had a physical player that possesses his height, weight, and speed. (He has shown some good skill early, and he is going to be an interesting player to monitor moving forward.)

Cullen Gillespia (FB) is going to make this football team. Don’t let his draft position fool you. He is an athletic player that can help the offense at fullback and special teams.

Kahale Warring (TE) looks like he belongs with this group and paired with Jordan Thomas, they are creating issues for linebackers and safeties in coverage.

Tyron Johnson (WR) is one of the few rookie free agent wide receivers that are making plays. He has shown speed, strength, and good hands during practice.

Getting ticky tacky to make that statement. Marcus Coleman was same height and only 3 lbs lighter. Also many draft reports had Johnson as not as physical as his size would indicate.

I find it hard to break out the pom poms when it looks like the offense won't change at all no matter how many times O'Brien "revamps" it.
Disagree with the first sentence.
He had this offense humming at more than 30 points a game for a stretch.
That then also negates your last.

Our offense is actually really dangerous when they can all be on the field. The trouble is we've only seen 4 games when they can all be on the field.
WFV is Watsons best target on paper. Add in Keke Coutee and his stats will improve greatly. I predict his sacks also reduce substantially.
It will also have the flow-on effect of taking pressure off his line and opening up the run game.

Great. In 5 years obrien has had the offense look good for a stretch. And that was when he basically let Watson do what he wanted, before he re-established his EP system

Injuries are pretty common. If he still Watson and Hopkins the offense shouldn't go to crap

I do agree with you to a point but at the same time when you have 3 WR and two of them go down that a pretty unlucky string of injuries. You can only have so much depth at one position and we have spent so much time and effort on just getting a QB that the rest of the roster has suffered for that. Part of this is on Watson to, he mostly only targeted Hopkins after Fuller and Coutee went down and defenses knew that. TEs weren't used well but at the same time not everyone named Hopkins was just blocking and there is plenty of times that Watson missed an open guy because he was waiting on Hopkins.

Dude, you cant just blame him for all the bad and not give credit where it is due.
For instance, how can you prove he did not design many of Watsons plays or at least expect them?

Gaine was here 2014-2016 as director of player personnel.
Those weren’t his players of course. And looking at the draft over those years only Reader and McKinney could possibly have fit his player profile. Sure Fuller for speed but everybody wants speed at WR. No doubt he was forming his philosophy then. Those really weren’t good drafts overall.
Edit. And of the 2014, 15, and 2016 drafts only two OL were drafted...XSF and Nick Martin. In 2017 Davenport and Kyle Fuller were drafted. Whew. The OL was starting to be dismantled no later than 2014 certainly as far as depth goes.

A good coach/OC would have a contingency plan for when key player/s go down. Obrien has failed miserably. Watson went down ( a freaking rookie) and the dude you said was your starter because he knew the offense through and through, couldn't at least make the offense look relevant. How in the heck you go from scoring 30+ to barely scoring 13 points a game.

That is what I believe KDog is talking about. When Fuller and rookie Keke went down we should've had receivers ready to go.

Remember when all obrien needed was a qb? Well he got his qb and the best wr in football. His own handpicked rb, TEs, and ol. Even replaced Fuller with Thomas. Still not enough.

I think there is strong evidence of the opposite. Most of your handpicked were draft choices. Pretty sure the way the draft was run was the biggest issue between OB and RS and they were big issues. RS ran the draft and made the choices on the ever changing draft board. Even Kubiak in his humble manner said more than once that he coaches the players but he stayed out of the draft day process. After RS left there was a seismic shift in the Texans draft strategy and draft quotes before the draft with both OB and BG speaking the same language. And not surprisingly but still a work in progress these last two drafts appear to be not only much better but more focused.
