We rollover cap space?

Yes teams are allowed to roll over unused capspace. The browns did this while they were tanking and I think now are using that extra space.

At some point teams have to spend it but I'm not sure of the exact rules

Surely there's a limit. How much?

Back to the original question: Is the OLine fixed? The answer from where we sit now is a big No. But there's still a lot of time for things to change. I hope I hope I hope! To state the obvious with great authority, we will have a better idea once the season starts and will know a bit more each week.

Hopefully in Watson's second full season they'll make a big jump

Yes and amen. As Pharoah liked to say in The Ten Commandments (which was on a few days ago), "So let it be written, so let it be done."
I wonder if Pharoah is available to coach the OL.

Weak FA Market?

You had a 25 yr old starting LT on a SB championship team.

A guy who was traded for a 3rd round pick the year before (which somehow the Texans didnt get in on despite having two 3rd rounders). He is good but not worth that new contract

He was worth it to the Raiders.

Just depends on if you prioritize protecting Watson.

You can not protect Watson or any other NFL player. This is a very dangerous sport Steel. These players are getting injured without being hit.

It's obvious that there us no such thing as completely protecting against injury in the NFL. Yes, guys do get hurt without being hit. But we should certainly do a better job of trying to protect our players, especially our key assets like Watson.

What premium FA has he added in fa on the cheap. Getting premium FA's on the cheap? LMAO

BTW, THe Texans aren't the Pats

You're misunderstanding. He signs value guys, not premium FAs usually.

Though he did use a 3rd rounder for Trent brown, traded for Branding Cooks, signed Stephen Gilmore, signed Amendola, signed Revis.

He actually hasnt had many big free agent signings which is the point we're trying to make. He doesn't do what you think the Texans should do (overpay free agents)

We'll see more after this weekend where the Texans value improvement the most.

Lets see, he paid top $$$$ for Revis and Gilmore and trade for Cooks.

BB targets guys and will spend $$$$ at positions of need.

Coery Dillon also comes to mind as well as trading for Moss.

Revis was for one year and he already traded Cooks away.

So you have a single example in Gilmore

Still Revis got paid big $$$$ while with the Pats.

I notice how you left out Dillon/Moss.

Even with my saying this, the Pats are an outlier.

One year, $12M for Revis.

Dillon never got more than $6M in a year.

Moss got $9m per which was 4th highest for WRs at the time.

So yeah they do find value in premium free agents

Those were large contracts back in the day. I believe Revis was the top paid CB at the time. Like you said Moss wasn't cheap. Gilmore?

When you are close you can pay for free agents, when you have holes and question marks everywhere, save the FA money and acquire draft picks and build a team with depth, then spend the dollars you have ROLLED over. I like Gaines long game and value game so far. If he sucks this weekend getting talent, then we can rant at them. I think he is not in go all in now mode, but rather wants a deep team. With assets and cap space you can make moves at the right time. I think they have so many holes I like this approach for where we are at. TB would not save DW4, but a few hits is my belief. Let's see how players including DW4 develop, who is drafted, who he picks up after the draft before we slay them

The best way to protect Watson starts with coaching. Drive home the dink and donk offense. Tell Watson it's ok to get rid of the ball quickly. His rookie year Watson got the ball out pretty fast. This past season dude either locked in on his target too much or tried to wait until the big play open up. Also coaching needs to stop with this 2 receivers set and every pattern/route past 10-15 yards.

Yes the blocking needs to improve. But even the Cowboys massive line gave up 50+ sacks last season. Suppose to be the best in the league correct.

If Obrien utilizes the dink n donk schemes, his QB will experience what Luck, Brady and Mahomes experienced.

It would have been nice to get TB, but I would have felt uncomfortable if we had to send him a Brinks truck to do so.

Add in a good run game and the pressure comes off Watson and opens up the passing game.
Voila! Just like magic!

Even so, we did back the Brinks truck up to him. Fortunately enough for us there was someone dumber out there.

I value protecting Watson over having a bunch of cap space

You will never add a premium fa if you're looking for value

The fallacy in your argument is that you believe Trent Brown is that answer & there is no guarantee that he is.

Granted you were high on him before he went to New England & what you saw in NE validated what you saw.

Again, the Texans bid & decided to pull the plug & go another way. Would you rather have Trent Brown or would you rather the Texans trade up & take a Left tackle with a top 10 pick?

Coery Dillon also comes to mind as well as trading for Moss.

I think Dillon was value when they signed him. I don't think it was a top 10 contract.

& Moss... they passed on Moss when he was a FA. When they traded for him (if they did) every body thought he was done after a disappointing stint in Oakland.

steelbtexan is right. Moss was not acquired by NE through FA. They sent an extra 4th round pick they had to Oakland. That is far from spending premium capital on premium talent.

He's wrong on that point. NE exploits value.

Yes that's right . They traded for him then signed him when he became a free agent

4th highest paid WR in the NFL at the time.

I will call that a significant spending acquisition.

He never became a FA. They signed their own.

As an aside, I just heard on NFLN, the Lions have drafted an OL with their first round pick in 3 of the last 4 drafts.

I wonder why the Colts get brought up all the time only drafting OL first in 3 of the last 7 drafts, but we don't hear much about the Lions.

They acquired him with a 4th round pick.

That would be like drafting Reid in the 4th & making him the 4th highest paid Safety on his 2nd contract.

So not a good example of what steelb wants then. The Patriots were cheap, they used a 4th round pick to feel a need. They paid him once it worked out, but the Texans have shown they pay their own guys too.
