First draft choice?

After all is said and done, who do you think will be the Texans' 1st draft choice? I realize there is very little chance of getting it right. My wild guess is CB Greedy Williams from LSU, but I won't scream about any OL or DB.

Guessing -- if Dillard slides to 18-20, they're on the phone discussing trading up. If he's gone by then, they're not thinking OT until 2nd round as one of the 2-3 OT's on their board will be there and are close enough in talent to not warrant spending their 1st on OT. If their CB is on the board at 23, they take him, if he's gone and there's not any no-brainer DL that has slid -- they trade back and target DL or CB in the spot they move back to. Best guess -- Deandre Baker at 23.

I wish that I could remember who it was .... a month or so ago, someone posted PFF's ratings for each of our individual offensive lineman. They were all about equally weak .... 50-ish per cent .... except Martin and Fulton who were both 70-ish. If Dillard and Williams are gone, I would surely think about securing a ROT. I think McGary, Edwards, and Risner will go late first or early second. That said, I wouldn't hesitate to trade up to 17 or 18 for Williams/Dillard !

I think it depends on if 3 QBs go before we pick. If they do, we might have a chance at OT, but if they don’t I’d guess CB/S.

OT: Williams or Risner (I think Dillard will be gone)
CB/S: Murphy or Adderley

I am not usually a fan of trading down in the first round but due to where the OL and even CBs likely fall in this one, this would be the perfect time for it. Obviously it would depend on who is still on the board - it would be hard to pass on a top DL if one is there.
I would trade back late in the first and take Risner and get that extra second round pick.
If Risner is gone then I would not be upset with Garrett Bradbury.

And if Risner and Bradbury both gone when that 2nd comes up? What then?

I doubt both these guys are snapped up before the second. Iow, at least one should still be there late in the first else there would still be a very good OL like Ford also still on the board.

Sure hope your plan works and additional second is high enough

We need to improve at guard, LT, and RT.

Watson has the potential to get us to a super bowl. Protect him at all costs.

Risner, Bradbury, etc. Both plug and play guards.

Assuming Dillard is gone.

Tyrus Howard will probably end up a Texan, also.

This is why if both Dillard and Williams are gone. I hope one of the CB's fall and they pick the CB and at 54 pick back to back Cajuste (Who can play immediately and while there will be a learning curve he's better than Davenport. Without Cajuste's injury history he wouldn't be there at 23 IMHO.) and Howard. This way you can start Henderson and give a talented but a guy who's technique needs refinement and time to get used to the speed of the NFL the proper time he needs to develop.

If they only draft Howard and go with Davenport/Kalil/Howard at LT then you can expect more pain will be in store for Watson next yr.

I predict that GM Gaine being the consummate pro he is meaning he'll stick with his Board and therefor draft either Montez Sweat or Cellin Ferrel, both edge guys where
there's also a need now in the wake of the JD Clowney trade where he found a team willing to give him multiple mid-round picks like perhaps two threes and a 4th round pick.
In the 2nd round he'll draft two offensive tackles: K-States Dalton Risner and AlaBama States Tyrus Howard.
Third round choice will be Michigan corner David Long.

I agree with this part. 2 OLs and a CB in the first 4 selections. Not exactly sure who the players would be, but the guys you've mentioned would likely be available where you have them going.

Night after night, NFL.com has Bradburry going to Rams @ 31 .... Again, can't remember for sure, but I think I heard that Pouncey is retiring.

hoping a Clowney trade draft day brings Jonah W. No way I see Texans trading up more than 2-3 spots. Greedy a franchise type corner so my guy at 23. Hope we draft 2 corners first three picks. All three starters now, I expect be gone 2020.

I really want Andre Dillard at #23 but Risner has Houston Texans written all over him with his O-line versatility

I guess in some sort of cosmic don't learn way. 1st LT never played a down due to two bum shoulders, why not try it again? I think it would be galactically stupid to draft Risner before the 3rd. Not sure how folks are glossing over his injuries.

We may have a mass exodus of Olinemen by 2020 as well if they don't perform or can't get on the field because of lingering injuries.

And another negative about Risner is that he's 24, or will be when the 2019 season begins in September so that's an older rookie.

By 2020 Tytus Howard should be able start RT if Henderson not re-signed. Rankin is a lock at LG and we can get starting center and RG if needed 2020 draft but I don't see Fulton not starting one of those spots. So.. Draft two OL 2020.

I think we shall see an UDFA OL or maybe two coming on board for training camp.
I have been checking out some small school guys and there are some out there that haven't made it onto any draft boards but I can see will eagerly be snapped up by teams that do their homework.
I will post a few up when I get some time.

To be clear, is your question "what do we think O'Brien will do?"
or is it, "What do we want them to do?"
I'm seeing both flavors in these responses.
And they could be verrry different.

Depends on whether you think Risner can stay healthy thru his 1st contract. There are OT's I like more than Risner, but there's no doubting his talent/toughness. 2 things the Texans could badly use on their OL.

I didn't know O'Brien was in charge of drafting talent.

if he isn't, he's nuts.
because, at the end of the day, O'Brien, not Gaine, is responsible for wins on Sunday.
So, if it were me, there wouldn't be anyone on the Texans draft board who I didn't approve.

I believe in the Paarcells train of thought; "If I'm gonna cook the meals then I'm going to be the one who picks the groceries."

It still comes down to Gaine as it will be his head on the chopping block but I imagine O'Brien submits a long wish list for Gaine to consider.

The question is what do you think Gaine will do. What we wish they would do is a matter for a different thread.

yeah I hope it works that way at the least

Except it won't work that way. OB got to bring in his guy to be on his page. If one leaves it's most likely OB. 2nd most likely both gone. Only then we maybe see a GM in the traditional role, maybe.

That doesn't sound like 'Chopped'. BOB will have influence, but it will be Gaine who has the final say

Which small schoolers have sparked your interest?

I don't have time this afternoon to dig them up but if you go to draftdiamonds, small school prospects and search for olinemen they should come up.
Some of them sound like they should be drafted in the mid rounds at least.

I agree and DBs also. This is a very good off season for corners and with announcement of Hal leaving I see us running even more thru TC to convert to safety. Will be offering suggestions soon in my thread on draft and FA.

If we trade clowney for two thirds and a fourth gaine should Be tarred and feathered and run out of town

I know. Anyone that thinks Clowney is only worth a second round pick is crazy. I’d be pissed if only brought back a first.

Have to take into account the contract a team will have to give him as well. He’s going to be making a lot more than any rookie.

Yes. What did Oakland Get in return for Mack? How much did you Chicago have to pay Mack?

Mack has won a defensive player of the year award and has been a more productive superior player to Clowney. You are incorrect in thinking they should be valued similarly.

What was suggested bore no similarity. It was about 420 pts v. 1100. Bottom of the 1st starts at 590, still not similar.

Mack has been more productive and/or not burdened by the injury/durability issues that have marked JDs career especially early.
Compare their numbers for the last three years and get back with me. Also consider Mack played on more complete defenses. When opposing QBs see DBs 10 to 12 yards off the LOS they eat that up with quick passes. I’m curious as to what the average time to release the ball was against us last year compared to Chicago. It seemed to me that most teams game plans heavily included quick passing plays to take advantage of our soft coverage.
