Welcome to Houston Tyrann Mathieu

Texans are making a push to try to retain safety Tyrann Mathieu, including a preliminary contract offer, according to league sources. Fluid situation, but they are doing what they can to keep him. My sense is he wants to remain in Houston, but he will have plenty of offers

Ravens Expected To Make “Strong Push” To Sign S Tyrann Mathieu

Ravens cut Eric Weddle earlier so they are likely in the market for a safety

If they lose KJ AND HB, they need to go balls to the wall to try and sign Landon Collins. Hopefully they resign HB and we'll be in pretty good shape at safety.

The last four games of the season, I wasn't impressed with Mathieu. I appreciate him taking less money to signed with the Texans, but is anyone concerned that the Texans might over pay for reputation more than on-field play? For example:
  • He's only had one season with more than 2 INTs
  • He's only played 16 games twice in 6 seasons and both were contract years
  • He has a reputation as a turnover magnet, but in 6 seasons he only has 13 INTs, 2 FR and 4 FF

If you compare Mathieu and Jackson's seasons, the numbers are really close. If your three safeties are Reid, Jackson and Hal. How much better is it with Reid, Mathieu and Hal? What is the salary difference?

They are both FA, so it depends who takes the deals offered, no salary to compare. They are targeting HB because he is 5 years younger with still some ceiling, that is my view. Safeties like KJ, HB, Collins, Thomas are all floating around. Will be interesting to see who wants to play where and for how much money. I don't lose sleep as we have Hal and Reid already, so any of these good FAs would leave safety in a pretty good situation. The OT market is much tighter, and CB market is not the best either, so those make me watch much closer how serious Gaine is going to be in free agency

Plenty of FS's, precious few SS's - in the draft, or FA.
The honey badger is a little on the smaller side, so might just be a casualty.
Texans secondary may go through a 2 year rebuild here.

I rather go Adrian Amos and avoid signing the big name box safety with very limited coverage skills that is Landon Collins. Someone is going to give him $10-12 a year and regret it

RAC likes playing 2 high safeties each who can cover well and be responsible for half of the field. Amos and Reid together would suit those needs perfectly

Point taken. I know Collins is more of a box safety. I am only mildly familiar with Amos so I'll take your word on him. Good points though and I'll cede that point to you.

Is there a general FA thread anywhere around these parts to discuss possible FA additions/losses, wish lists, and signings?

Just to add to this, we can't have open season on our secondary so the only alternative is constant pressure on the QB - and that means an unrelenting, quality pass rush.

I’m cool with the Texans paying Mathieu, but we need to go after a couple of good corners. We will continue to get torched if we keep using him as a corner/safety. Keep him at safety for god’s sake!!

Texans’ negotiating priority remains Tyrann Mathieu, whom they’ve offered a multi-year contract extension. RIch safety market, so plenty of fallback options if he signs elsewhere. Hearing Ravens aren’t involved on him. Lions have interest and Chiefs, among others.

At first he wanted to stay here, now he's testing the market. Lol wow
This is just good business, do you buy the first car you like from the first dealer you go to? Most people even if they like the car and the deal offered they still test drive others. Or if you are hiring a contractor to do work on your house do you hire the first one in the phone book or do you get several to give you quotes? I've had jobs before that I liked and wanted to stay at but the money offered from someone else was just to good to pass up. At the end of the day you have to do whats best for you in the long run. Besides, nothing says the Texans can't meet or beat any deal another team offers.

So $9.5 M here or Florida, Tennessee and Washington is like about $10 M in any state due to state income tax. It will be interesting to see if another team will pay him $10 M. Of course, he took less to come here last year than he was offered from others. No doubt it is more about signing bonus and guaranteed money.

Good year of versatile safety play in first season in RAC's system, and a big time lockerroom leader..

You think those two things are mutually exclusive?
I thought he was only ok. I know KJ is older but I think he’s better and I’d rather have him instead. Now if they could land Collins or earl Thomas that would be even better.

I think KJ and Matthieu are petty on par with one another in total, just a little better or worse in some small varying days. But then the age thing comes into play. And I'll also learn toward how much Tyrann can improve having acclimated a full year now to what RAC is asking from him. Really wouldn't be too fussed as long as we can retain one of them.

And Collins wasn't good at all last season.

Wish we could've kept him, but not at that price. I felt like that $9.5M/YR was fair. Oh well... Dan Snyder really effed up the safety market with what he gave Collins!

Good luck in KC, Badger!

I liked Mathieu's leadership but there's no doubt as to why he chose Kansas City over us. They have a future with a quarterback that's actually going to reach his potential because their coach isn't a ****-for-brains loser.

I have. The "Official" Texans board was run the same way. It wore everyone out...
For every person who thinks starting threads are a Constitutional right, there is another who goes postal if everything that happens between now and September isn't under one thread entitled off-season. Under the category, we try to be fair but really won't get it just right for everyone's specific taste.

while i agree with your coaching assessment, Im not too concerned with KC reaching a defensive apex next year and Mathieu being the fulcrum for the change .. while a solid run guy Tyrann left PLENTY to be desired in pass pro. Wish him luck, he was a cool dude in the locker room, but Im not concerned with KCs defense at all really, hell they just lost their best defensive player in Justin Houston.

Letting Honey Badger get away was the worst mistake that's ever been made. We already knew he could play in our system. His replacement? It's like playing Russian roulette.

Tyrann got burnt consistently by talented TEs, his replacement has consistently shutdown talented TEs but whatever floats your boat

We could have posted this a year ago when honey badger signed with the Texans...this is ALWAYS the case with ANY free agent.
