Absolutely. I am all about cultural appreciation. That's why I like all those other cuisines better than white bread with white rice with white chicken meat with mashed potatoes. "Cultural appropriation" is just a ridiculious concept I was poking fun at.

Yeah, what was really ignorant on my part was assuming that people on the internet have a sense of humor. Especially white people apparently. Anyone (not aimed at you) who gets their panties in a wad over "there's white people so the food is bland" instead of having a chuckle has issues.

Although I do think the "there's lots of non-whites there now so the food doesn't suck anymore" proves my (jesting) point instead of disproving it. If I go into a Mexican or Indian restaurant and all the customers are white I am tempted to walk out because the food won't be very good.

Not joking - I do think it is a damning commentary on the taste of most Americans (including non-whites) that bazillions of cases of Coors Light, Bud Light, and Miller Lite are flying off the shelves when for 20 or 30% more $ they could buy excellent beers that actually have flavor (and 50 to 100% more alcohol not that anyone is counting).
Haha. I originally assumed your first post was heavily laced with irony, but my disappointment rose with your subsequent desire to explain and defend.

The bold underestimates your average modern (British at least) whitey. Otherwise, touche, a fine riposte.

Went to a mom and pop Mexican restaurant in our neighborhood recently and the salsa with the chips they brought out was slightly more spicy than ketchup. We started to look around and almost everyone was old and white. We knew we were in trouble. Sure enough, the food was terrible.

Exactly. Get the Hot and Sour soup at a Chinese restaurant and it is neither hot or sour. Mention it to the owner. He says they changed it because people complained (it wasn't bland enough). I bet the people who complained weren't speaking in Mandarin.

You may say I’m a dreamer but I’m not the only one
I have a very hot pallet by the standards of my friends and am the only one ordering vindaloo or naga chili off the menu in the Indian.

The burrito bar down the road from me has a salsa that will blow my head off, the hottest piri piri at Nando's is a struggle to cope with.

The thing is that from what you guys are saying is that without that level of heat things seen flavourless, where to my palette, once you get over a certain level of heat, I can no longer distinguish any flavour except for that chili.

Are you still able to enjoy the subtle flavours in these xxxtra hot dishes you are enjoying?

You know the vast majority of popular curries are invented in the UK btw? I think a good curry house is in order.

You equating skin color with food taste is nothing but racist and not funny at all. You didn't have to go there, but you would rather antagonize based on your prejudices than make a meaningful comment. Enjoy your life, you have shown yourself to be a bigot and nothing more

The problem with spicy foods is too many of them chase "heat" instead of flavor.

If I want hot for the sake of hot, I can stick my tongue in a fire but if it tastes like a donkey anus I got better places to put my tongue, thanks.
Heat has nothing to do with flavor... pepper is not the only spice, nor are heavily spiced foods the only ones with 'flavor'.

I'm venturing slightly off topic b/c it was worth mentioning since we started discussing Mexican/Spanish food. Through all my travels, hands down.....the finest Mexican Food I've ever enjoyed was at Mexi-Cocina in Poway, Ca. I stumbled into this location and met the owner, Robert who was there roaming the floor talking to his customers. Anyhow, he got to my table and mentioned he'd never seen me and I let him know it was my first visit. I told him how I rated Mexican Food restaurants.....if the chips and salsa are bad, politely get up and leave. He laughed and told me I was in for a treat. Chips were fresh and warm and the salsa thick and cold with just enough of a bite. I wasn't leaving b/c they kept the chips and salsa coming.

His lunches were amazing. Fresh fish filet of the day grilled and mildly seasoned with homemade beans, rice and tortillas for $8.95. Chips, salsa and tortillas were unlimited....oh, and the iced tea. I went there just about everyday. Didn't do dinners there until he came over and told me to come by after work to try his newest dinner menu item. He introduced lobster enchiladas with a mildly spicy cream sauce and rice and beans for 13.95 a plate. This dinner was absolutely insane. Needless to say, I enjoyed several dinners there and every client I met with....was at Robert's.

Any of you ever find yourself in San Diego....take a drive to Poway and find this place, it's going to be worth the trip and effort.

Had to look up the location online since it's been about 16 years since my last visit. Robert sold the place but it's still in business. The reviews are still good. First review I read stated Robert had sold and the new owners have maintained the place nicely. That's awesome. I did take a look at the menu and noticed the new owners removed the Lobster Enchiladas and replaced them with less expensive alternatives...Shrimp Enchiladas and Scallop Enchiladas. I'd probably be all over the Scallop Enchiladas.

I did not equate skin color with food taste. Lots of white people have good taste, that's why we eat food from a variety of cuisines. What I did was note the fact that traditionally "white cuisine" tends to be less flavorful than food from many other cuisines.

Obviously I have offended you. My apologies. I am sure you are the whitest 100% pure Aryan person ever, and would never lower yourself to tasting any food from a cuisine influenced in any way by non-white people.

It's a meaningless description by race. Norway, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, etc - traditionally white countries with massively different cuisines (and none of them bland).

When traveling, and I get hungry, I look for a place with 18 wheelers parked in front. Don't care if the drivers are white or green. The food will be top notch. It ain't rocket surgery.

Don't care if its cooked by Indians, Mexicans or White people. To me culture begins and ends in a cast iron pot.

To be perfectly honest some of the best food I have partaken was cooked by black mommas / grandma's.

And most often fairly priced. Gourmet food is way overrated.

Truckers eat where they can park. It's an indication of space not quality.

Apparently you like diner food and that's fine.

You guys are drifting away from the main topic a bit. ;)

I had a great Steak near Piccadilly Circus while visiting the Saints-Chargers Game in 08 at Angus Steakhouse. Also met the two Chargers-Players late after the Game.

Also London has TGIF. I guess thats american, isnt it?

Yes. Americans should be barred from eating at American restaurants when traveling, especially those inclined to do so.
Might be hard to to so. For example I´m sitting in my office in Cologne/Germany at a very centered place in that major german city. And the nearest restaurants from my spot are KFC, Burger King, McDonalds, Joe Champs (American Sports Bar), Bay Area Burrito (like Chipotle) and Hans im Glück (finally something german, but they only have burgers).

Styrofoam plates and plastic forks. Napkins that come off a roll. Packets of salt and pepper. All you can eat for one price. Fountain where you pour you own drinks, no charge for refills. :hurrah:

Chinese buffet down the road with boiled shrimp on the salad bar. All you can eat. Gotta add lots of red sauce though. Don't think anyone has introduced them to Cajun shrimp boil. Little stuffed crabs. I get my moneys worth there.

Love the kung pao chicken/fried rice bowl at Panda Express. Nothing bland about that. Got peanuts and hot peppers in it. Now that's gourmet food at it's finest.

Just a simple man with a simple palate. :)

I will never understand people, American or otherwise, travelling halfway around the world to just moan about their new environment being not exactly like their home. It's absolutely astounding.
That's what I don't understand. Got everything we need right here. Just watch the travel channel if you want to see how and where the other half lives.

I can watch the Jags/Texans game without the looooong plane trip and expense.

That's funny. Within a half mile of me there is one fast food place, Whataburger. Otherwise there are Indian, Greek, Morrocan, Thai x2, sushi, French Vietnamese, Texmex x2, tacos x3, KoreanMex, Mexican, Spanish, Italian, an 80 year old burger shack, a live music bar that serves Americana and 2 tapas style American plus a couple beyond classification (one involves a donut in everything, e.g. donut hamburger bun).

No chains except Whataburger. But it's Austin.

Not really fair to compare Austin to........well any place really when it comes to food. For a relatedly small city, compared to its big sisters in Houston, Dallas and San Antonio, I swear its packed more top rated food places then all three combined. Seriously I could spend a week there and eat every meal somewhere different and still not hit them all.

Slightly off topic, but I own a bar in Denver that hosted the Traveling Texans this season. I had 50 different locals beers on tap or in bottles. They only thing I ran out of was Michelob Ultra. A ton of the fanbase refused to even try something new. I can't wait to see what happens in London, lol.

London related. Looks like the NFL is not looking to move a team to London. Goodell said too difficult logistically. They would like to move toward 8 games in London per year but it would be 16 different teams. Link. That makes a lot more sense.

that's like saying one should never go to a game just stay home and watch TV. Why limit yourself to what the TV shows decide to tell you when you can go see for yourself? I would you want the Travel Channel to be your source for telling you about Houston?

I can understand the excitement of tailgating and attending the games. It just isn't for me.

I am sure you will find this hard to believe, maybe not.

I've been to a couple of Texan games the last few years. Son got free tickets from a supplier. Real good seats. Went to a KC game and a Dallas game.

I don't care to go again. Have turned down tickets. Just can't tolerate the traffic, and my son was driving. I felt the least I could do was buy refreshments. For what I paid for burgers and drinks the boss and I could have had a great steak dinner and couple of drinks at Salt Grass in Humble and watched the game on TV.

I consider this to be a better use of my limited expendable income. As they say, "to each his own".

I lived in Northwest Houston for 17 years, worked downtown at the Chronicle, Houston Post when it was downtown and the old Houston Press. Area was rife with hookers, wino's and muggers.

I have seen all I care to see there. Had season tickets to Oilers in the Dome. Seats in mezzanine for $7 and parking was $3. No such thing as PSLs. Did have suites available for the well heeled.

If the Texans depended on my monetary support they would have to move elsewhere. I don't buy overpriced NFL merchandise either. I've been accused of squeaking when I walk. Tighter than a crabs' arse, thats water tight.

JP I don't know what you mean by this?

I imagine that the NFL pays the travel / lodging cost of each team for these trips. Maybe not, I don't know.

But I do know where the NFL gets their funds and you are right, it's not a fund me page.

It's from advertising, broadcast fees and the licensing and selling of merchandise.

All of which wouldn't be there if not for the fans. Fans who pay their own way if they choose to go overseas to watch their team play. I could start me a fund me page to go to the overseas game, but I wouldn't go if someone paid for it and paid me to go.

Lucrative business. Old news but relevant. ESPN reported on Sunday that Goodell had asked for a salary of $49.5 million a year, the use of a private jet for life and lifetime health insurance for his family. Goodell was paid $31.7 million in 2015, the most recent figure publicly available.Nov 13, 2017

Almost as much as some of he players / owners make.

Only one making money off of me was the guy who sold me overpriced burgers at the game. I'm sure the Texans got a cut.

It's all entertainment and fans choose to spend their money to watch. Nothing wrong with that.

Know what is really galling. I pay for satellite TV, then sit through endless commercials to watch the games. How dumb is that??

But I will continue watching...... until I don't. :)

She has lifelong friends that she makes two or three trip a year with. Condo in Rockport / Corpus for a week, trips to Galveston and B&B visits to some small towns. Say she wishes I would go but she ain't fooling me.

After being a stay at home mom and raising our five kids she deserves a break from it all. I kinda enjoy it too. :)
