Deshaun Watson after 16 games

So Watson just completed his 16th game - basically that wraps up his rookie season. Yeah, I know. It doesn‘t work like that. He had 2 training camps and almost two years with the team and the coaches. But it‘s still interesting to look at the stats for his first 16 games:

4088 total yards, 36 TDs, 15 INT, 63,6%, 49 sacks, 537 rushing yards, 3 rushing TDs, 10 fumbles (3 lost). Passer rating: 101,7. 9-7 WL (he only played half of the first game, which was basically already lost).

Impressive. Especially if you count those almost 50 sacks in there as well.

Very nice after it's all said and done. However now I have to wonder.....will the 2nd year slump be an issue moving forward?

Also have to include 2 pretty serious injuries in there

Good job to Dw4 for saving Ob job. It irritates me watching O’brien predictable play calling every week while I studied both the Rams and Patriots offense yesterday. What I love about there coaches is the unorthodox approach to the game. For example they do not run the ball up the middle every time on 1st down or 3rd & short. They implement at least 1 trick play during the game. With that being said I would never doubt this team with a healthy Watson but I would like for him to master playcalling recognition like the Bradys, Manning’s and Rodgers because you’re not going to win with conservative playcalling in the playoffs.

Him and Mahomes are going to be the Manning-Brady analogues for the AFC for the next 15 years.

Not making a 1:1 comparison, but I think they will define the "who's the best" discussion in our conference.

Meh, the Bucs had a couple QBs. They just blew it with them. And they won a SB with the ultimate game manager.
Game has changed a whole lot since those days that Johnson/Dilfer and defense won superb owls

Really? Didn't Wilson and Flacco do pretty much that?
No... Wilson and Flacco had incredible runs in the playoffs. And my point was that when Johnson/Dilfer won, defenses could destroy receivers and QB's. No such thing as defenseless WR's or roughing the passer

They still rode their defenses to a super bowl trophy. Lynch was key for Seattle and Rice for Baltimore. The QBs were good but not great.

Ice cream good. Bill O’Brien bad.

I understand a NFL quarterback is tied, somewhat to the coaching staff. Does Bo’B have to be focus of every thread?

I’ll start, or try to get back on track. Yes the oline has largely been bad with Watson but he’s also run into his fair share of those himself. That’s kind of the risk with him. He’s difficult to block for but with time with the same group of linemen hopefully they’ll all get on the same page more consistently.

Yes, but the game has still changed a lot even since Wilson... anywho, I was replying to Eriadoc's statement about the Bucs winning with a game manager. Still possible IF you have a Very strong running game and the top defense, but not as likely with today's rules geared towards offenses. No biggie. Denver also won one recently with a top defense and a middling QB but the changes in the last couple years make it unlikely to happen in the near future

Copy that. I agree about the rule changes. I'm still shocked that KJ wasn't penalized on that wicked hit he had yesterday.

Doug Williams could have been a franchise guy but Hugh Culverhouse didn't want to pay him and let him slip off to the USFL. Steve Young had no support or coaching. He probably would have never been successful here under that regime. Testaverde might have been a franchise guy with the right coaching. He thrived under Parcells. Dilfer just sucked and still was not good in Baltimore. He just had to learn to manage the game and not turn the ball over with that defense. Brad Johnson had a career season that SB year and was indeed the ultimate game manager. With Josh Freeman it looked like the Bucs finally had their franchise guy, however, something got into his head (Greg Schiano maybe). That situation was very weird. Jameis Winston is a head case on and off the field. He looks great at times but then makes mindblowing horrible decisions. He's also not accurate and I don't think you can coach accuracy. He's also a piece of garbage of a human, so good riddance to him.

So I agree with your assessment. A couple or maybe 3 QBs that could have been franchise guys but they blew it because of being cheap, bad coaching or not having a supporting cast around them. The bottom line is that they have NEVER signed a QB to a 2nd contract in their history. So they've never had what you would call a franchise guy.

As for Watson, I really like the guy. He can be the face of the franchise for years to come. My concerns are BOB ruining him and him staying healthy. He also seems like a great guy off the field. He won me over last year sporting that Moon jersey. Nice to see him embrace the roots of Houston football.

I thought he was talking about Fitzpatrick.

DW4 has not thrown an int in 3 games.
That's a good sign - turnovers are a crucial element. Limit those and the other team has to beat you.
OB has to take the shackles off occasionally though to allow those natural instincts a chance to fully develop.
Penalties are another factor where you can just give bonuses to your opponent - limit those as well and teams have to beat you on their own merit.

LOL, no. I was talking about Doug Williams and Steve Young, of course. They had two guys with Hall of Fame talent and made nothing of it. But, as Hookem points out, those QBs would probably be Archie Manning stories if the Bucs had kept them. It's not all about the QB. It's the organization and team around him.

So Watson ... well, 1st down hand-offs up the middle for -2 yards don't result in sacks, at least.

I want to see Watson under the tutelage of a true QB guru. I no longer care if O'Brien stays or goes.

I just want to see how good Watson could be if he was being shown the ropes by a
Andy Reid, Norv Turner, Sean Payton, or Todd Haley.

Who's available?

My point about the Super Bowl for TB was more counter to the lament of no QB for TB.

Umm, what's his name? The former head coach for the Cardinals, was interim coach for the Colts when Pagano got sick. That guy has a very good track record with QBs, but I think he retired, maybe.

Bruce Arians.
And he did step down as Cards HC.

It was a good hit, but with today's rules there is too much judgement. You just never know when the flag might come out.

Brett Kollman posted a critique of Watson that reveals some of his learning curve challenges. Keep in mind this was made after the Cowboys game when Watson was playing hurt and may have been more affected by his rehabbed knee.

My takeaway is that Watson is playing well but still has a long way to go. And also that a non-mobile QB with Watson's passing ability would still have a high ceiling but not a great season right now.

And pardon Kollman's drama queeniness at the end of this.

Deshaun is THRIVING despite all the commotion around him. It's innate. That type of work ethic and desire can't be taught. You either have it or you don't.

He's a champ. Only thing missing is a Vince Lombardi trophy and I feel more confident each day he will get us there. Hopefully management does everything possible to surround him with more help.

Yep,

He's gotta stay healthy though.

I see progress in this area.

He's learning how to get down instead of taking on LB's.

He still needs to work on getting rid of the ball more quickly.

He's been sliding beautifully lately. His biggest problem is exactly that .. waiting too long to make a 'highlight' play. He will learn to just take the positive yards and become more efficient and methodical. I think its the easiest thing to fix for a young QB. I wish route development was quicker and more precise closer to the line of scrimmage instead of 15 yards downfield, that would help Deshaun get it out quicker and prevent those coverage sacks and brainfart INTS.

Agreed, A sign that Watson is growing on the job is that he's gone 3 games without an Int. Some of the sacks Watson took against Denver was because he held the ball too long. I also would like to see quicker developing routes.

I don't agree with everything he is saying but this guy is obviously very intelligent and makes some excellent points. DW4 will figure it out, he's smart too

I think that's exactly why BOB called those plays. When you don't have a talented line with good backups and 2 of your linemen get hurt during the game (Lamm and Kelemente), not getting your prized QB killed should be a top priority! I just hope they can get some talented O-linemen next off season in the Draft and FA to keep Watson healthy going forward. Keep your fingers crossed for the rest of the season!

Yeah, so call some off tackle, pitches, traps, etc. Mix it up. Do something to make the defense think it won't be a handoff up the gut with Lamar Miller. When brute force is not your strong suit, trickery helps out.

OB needs to design more plays for short yardage gains - a more patient game but productive on 3rd downs.
A really strong running game will also give Watson more confidence to hand it off.
