With his injury/surgery history and its expected course, with its expected ongoing compensatory injuries, the "mega deal" phrase scares the heck out of me, especially in light of Watt's.Hope it has some injury protection clauses.

But what is the gauranteed # because everything else is just funny money ?Clowney deal almost done. 18-18.5M per year

According to the tweet, that IS the guaranteed money ($18-18.5/year). If so, and there is no injury clause, I believe it will not end well..........for the team. But what is the gauranteed # because everything else is just funny money ?
From what I read, it’s supposed to be a 5 yr deal with all guaranteed money in the 1st two years.According to the tweet, that IS the guaranteed money ($18-18.5/year). If so, and there is no injury clause, I believe it will not end well..........for the team.

What's the point in doing the deal early if thats what they're offering. Might as well let him test FA because I highly doubt his market is $90M fully guaranteed.Where have you seen this. Schultz's tweet reads as if it is all guaranteed. I hope that is not correct. Cody Stoops asked him to clarify fully guaranteed vs not.............he has gotten no response since early yesterday.
FWIW according to John McClain on 610 radio yesterday between 5 and 6 they have not scratched the surface towards working on a new contract for JD.
It was in a link on McLain's tweet. I saw it on Bleacher Report.Where have you seen this. Schultz's tweet reads as if it is all guaranteed. I hope that is not correct. Cody Stoops asked him to clarify fully guaranteed vs not.............he has gotten no response since early yesterday.
The only Bleacher Reports I've seen still refer to the Shultz tweet, which states all is guaranteed. It was in a link on McLain's tweet. I saw it on Bleacher Report.
Von Miller had $70 mil out of his $114 mil contract guaranteed........and that was a 6 year contract. I'm still concerned about the guarantees and the injury clause aspect.![]()

Report: Jadeveon Clowney, Texans Expected to Agree to New Contract Before Camp
ALEC NATHAN
APRIL 05, 2018
The Houston Texans and edge-rusher Jadeveon Clowney are "close" to finalizing a contract extension worth between $18 million and $18.5 million annually over five years, according to Yahoo Sports' Jordan Schultz.
The deal is reportedly expected to be completed by the start of training camp, at the latest.
The MMQB's Albert Breer first reported the two sides were "making a lot of progress" toward a "mega-extension."
Clowney, who finished last season with a career-high 9.5 sacks, said last month he wanted to be a member of the Texans for life.
"I want to be here, too," he said, per the Houston Chronicle's Aaron Wilson. "I'm looking forward to that. Hopefully they lock me in and I'll be here forever. It would mean a lot, something I've always dreamed of. I want to finish my career here."
If Clowney winds up raking in $18 million a year, he would become the second-highest paid outside linebacker in the NFL on an average annual basis behind Denver Broncos edge-rusher Von Miller ($19 million).
he is one of the best in the league at his position.Am I the only one looking at Clowney like an athlete playing football and not a football player mastering his craft? I worry his extension will be burden. Never liked the pick in a fruitful draft.....

So who did you want realistically then? The only players discussed as possible #1 overall were Clowney, Bortles, Robinson and Watkins. Only a few mentioned small school Mack as a possibility.
All things considering, they made the right choice.
I would have traded the pick. At that time they needed more than just one player. Here's the real kicker, all three of those dudes are/were available this offseason. Greg Robinson is a FA, Watkins was a FA, and Bortles could still be cut with minimal impact.
Rumors were they were trying to shop the pick but there no takers.I would have traded the pick. At that time they needed more than just one player.
Brett Kollmann's breakdown of Clowney.
Likely Outcome
Despite the recent opinion by John McClain, stating he does not believe an extension gets done, the belief on this end the contract extension will be completed during training camp. Clowney will need to make some concessions in the extension based on his injury history. The team can still offer Clowney a strong contract with a top tier 3 year cash flow of $47-$50 million. The guarantee at signing will need to be lowered, or the team could build in some rolling injury guarantees in 2019 and 2020. The contract will likely use per game roster bonuses to shield the team from a cash stand point. Houston routinely uses the per game roster bonus model, but Clowney’s contract will need to use higher value bonuses. This will be a difficult negotiation based solely on Clowney’s injury history both in the past and his current health status.
Confidence is high on a contract extension. But there would be little shock if the team opted to go year to year through the use of the franchise tag. Houston employs one of the best contract negotiators in the league in Chris Olsen. Fans are on both sides of the fence from what has been posted. Clowney undoubtedly has the talent to be a premiere player in this league for many years to come, but can his knees sustain the long term work.
Not quite sure why you are posting 2015 statements. Here are the Texans news releases on Clowney as reported by Rotoworld:
The Texans remain confident Clowney will be ready to contribute Week 1. May 19 - 12:39 PM
Clowney is not expected to be ready for the beginning of training camp, but Week 1 is realistic. Apr 28 - 1:59 PM
The Texans are targeting the "end of training camp" for OLB Jadeveon Clowney (microfracture surgery) to return to
the football field. Apr 3 - 2:53 PM
Clowney is expected to miss Houston's entire offseason program recovering from microfracture surgery. He should
be ready at some point in training camp, but remains questionable for Week 1. Mar 28 - 3:37 PM
Clowney will miss Houston's entire offseason program. Clowney needs to avoid setbacks to be ready for Week 1. Mar 25 - 7:08 PM

I think both sides should and can come to agreement on extension beginning 2019 but does not erase 2018. The cash (salary and also the cap # $12.306 million) is guaranteed for injury and fully guaranteed Sept 6th if he is on roster. It should be possible for him to earn significant game by game (2018) bonus after each game. For example, Clowney plays regular season game and gets an additional $500,000 direct deposit next business day for each game; plays all 16 as he did last year and he gets $8 m + $12.306 = $20.306 m for year. Other bonus could be if he plays post season. The $20 m is one more than Von Miller's. Based on his health the extension goes into effect. If he gets through most/all season his new deal should be very good and already agreed to.
Facts for Clowney:
*Texans have paid their vets very, very well, McKinney's deal is hot and Clowney's agent can get the details if needed.
* he has been significantly injured impacting his value to team three of four years.
* he has bonded with and tutored by JJ Watt and is very popular with over all fan base.
My suggestion 12.306 m (guaranteed) up to 20 m for this 2018 season. He signs week after Texans regular season ends receiving $20 million signing bonus for the extension. This puts minimum of $32. 306 million in his bank by New Year's eve with a very possible additional $8 m if all games played. As I said about Duane Brown, show up and play well and you will get paid. If he repeats 2017 this year he will have two solid years and the extension should match that. Texans can push new money from extension at any time as we have cap space to do so.
While I'd love to see him sign for that much, I don't see a scenario where JDC signs for $12M guarantee when the going rate for his position/impact is $30-$70M. I do think that $20M is the sweet spot for his yearly salary.

Von Miller 6 year, $114M ($17M signing bonus, $70M guaranteed) signed 2016
Melvin Ingram 4 year, $64M ($10.5M signing bonus, $34M guaranteed) signed 2017
Robert Quinn 4 year, $57M ($4M signing bonus, $41M guaranteed) signed 2014
Chandler Jones 4 year, $82M ($15M signing bonus, $51M guaranteed) signed 2017
Which of those players have undergone microfracture knee surgery? In fact, which of those players had any major injury history prior to their contracts? The word you may be looking for........"NONE."
No one denies that CND. We should be very careful w JDC's contract but at the end of the day agents are going to push for the flashier numbers. He's now a probowler and a known commodity in the league; even with his previous injury history. It's going to cost us something. How much is out of our control here.
It's in the Texans control and I hope they learned something from the Cushing ordeal.
Looks like things are different down on Kirby, Ricky would've already signed JDC to a 5 yr deal with 50 mil guaranteed.
Don't think you read my info correctly. The $12 m is his already & is guaranteed day one of NFL 2018 season. He doesn't sign anything for that..he just shows up and plays which is what he wants to do. Team bonus him 1/2 million dollars for each game he plays as soon as next day. He gets a million dollars every two weeks just for playing. He just completed a 16 game season (his one and only) and should be confident he can repeat that. Team says "we believe in you and will give you a huge bonus not in original deal plus a very rich deal once you complete season". New deal can be negotiated and even publicly reported; good for team and good for player and his agent. He signs new deal when season ends and gets additional $20 million before Jan 2019. $32 million in his bank is really good deal. Can you imagine McNair not backing up the money trunk and dumping a rich deal on Clowney after a second healthy season with similar number? Even crazier would be if JD has a pro bowl year. McNair gave Watt and Hopkins lots of money and another player to brag about only helps McNair's rep and his balance sheet. We have about $35 m cap space left for 2018 so the guarantees would not impact. While I'd love to see him sign for that much, I don't see a scenario where JDC signs for $12M guarantee when the going rate for his position/impact is $30-$70M. I do think that $20M is the sweet spot for his yearly salary.

Franchise tag him the next two years and wish him well. I was a fan of drafting JDC but the injury history is just too much for me to sign him to anything resembling a long term contract even if it is front loaded for the first 2 years. The 2nd year is by no means guaranteed with JDC. I see him more as a week to week risk, so I like bb's idea of $500K/week played if he is signed to an extension. No one denies that CND. His agent would never agree to that for a long term contract.Franchise tag him the next two years and wish him well. I don't care. Franchise tag him for two years and let JDC and his agent bilk some other team. His agent doesn't affect the franchise tag.His agent would never agree to that for a long term contract.
Not arguing with that............just that the $500,000 per week would never fly with his agent.I don't care. Franchise tag him for two years and let JDC and his agent bilk some other team. His agent doesn't affect the franchise tag.
Why? He gets his guarantee $12 m 2018 salary (#3 OLB per spotrac) + up to $8 million more in 2018. That's not part of new deal. New deal for example could be 6 year $120 m---$20 m bonus when he signs after 2018 season and guarantee his 2019 first year of deal $20m. Compare this to OLB Von Miller who signed 2016:Not arguing with that............just that the $500,000 per week would never fly with his agent.

6 year $114.5 [Clowney 120] signing bonus $17.5 [Clowney 20 paid in 2018], Miller 1st year 2016 was $2 m + $6 m roster= $8m [Clowney first year $20 m].
2019 Miller gets NON guaranteed $17.5 + workout bonus $500,000= $18 m 2019 Clowney $20 m guaranteed. I cannot imagine Clowney allowing his agent to turn down that contract.

Definitely agree on his risk and while he did complete 16 games, I want to see how he responds longer term. If he gets through another season, It will be almost impossible to not give him a rich offer. Even another successful season will probably deteriorate his health significantly. I am ok with using the tags 2019 & 2020 but a carefully worded contract could be fruitful for Clowney, not wreck the team cap yet protect team. What I like most about Chris Olsen is way he sets up the contract years.Misread the weekly was PLUS the $12.306 million. The agent should jump at this. However, if he makes it onto the field but "afflicted" on many of the 2018 games and/or doesn't perform like a top DE, I wouldn't even consider a long-term extension. I have very little confidence in that knee (or Clowney) holding up much longer, especially with the other knee, ankle, hamstrings and midfoot (actually a non surgical Lisfranc injury) already showing signs of problems.
Clowney had his knee cleaned up to celebrate his first season starting 16 games. Since then, we haven’t seen him play at all. He’s been on the sideline. He’s briefly discussed his return to the field and his contract situation, something that still hasn’t been resolved. Things finally changed yesterday. Clowney put on the pads and walked out onto the football field again where he should remain until week one when theTexansplay thePatriots.
Aaron Wilson reported Clowney’s return and had the following quotes from the Texans’ starting outside linebacker.
“I’m good to go. I’m ready to go. My knee feels great. It felt great. It’s been feeling good.
It’s very important to get out there and get some live plays, because I’m going to be getting out there with the guys I’m going to be playing with during the season. We need to get our chemistry together, and I haven’t been out there with them. So for me to get out there and get going, it’ll be great for me. I’m good enough to play.
I don’t really pay any attention. It’s all about football and trying to win games.Super Bowl, that’s the goal. All this working out during the offseason and training and getting in shape and eating healthy is all for one reason, and that’s the Super Bowl.”
So Clowney is one, healthy, two, wants to play on Saturday, and three, only cares about the Texans winning a Superbowl instead of his new contract. Beautiful. Perfect.
Additionally, Bill O’Brien did say every healthy Texan should play this Saturday in Houston’s thirhttps://www.battleredblog.com/2018/8/21/17763100/jadeveon-clowney-is-back
