Deshaun Watson - Out for the Year - Torn ACL

While no two players are the same, here is a look at how other quarterbacks have done the season following a torn ACL:

Donovan McNabb (2006 season)

McNabb tore his ACL in Week 11 but returned for the Philadelphia Eagles the next season. In 2007, McNabb played in 14 games and completed 61.5 percent of his passes for 3,324 yards, 19 touchdowns and seven interceptions. While McNabb’s passing numbers were slightly down from 2006, there was a noticeable difference on the ground. In 2006, the mobile McNabb averaged 6.6 yards per carry in 10 games; the year following his torn ACL, he was down to 4.7.

Carson Palmer (2005 and 2014 seasons)

Palmer’s first ACL tear, which came during his time with the Cincinnati Bengals, was thought to be career-threatening because he also tore his MCL and had cartilage and meniscus damage in his left leg. Palmer was back on the field for the preseason in 2006 and played in all 16 games that season. He threw for 4,035 yards and 28 touchdowns with 13 interceptions. Palmer tore his left ACL for the second time in November 2014, just days after signing a three-year contract with the Cardinals. In 2015, Palmer had perhaps his best NFL season, completing 63.7 percent of his passes for 4,671 yards and 35 touchdowns. He threw 11 interceptions and finished with a career-high passer rating of 104.6.

Tom Brady (2008 season)

Brady tore his left ACL in the first quarter of the New England Patriots’ season opener in 2008 and missed the rest of the season. The then-three-time Super Bowl champion returned for the season opener -- when he threw for 378 yards, two touchdowns and an interception -- and played in all 16 games during the 2009 season. That year, Brady completed 65.7 percent of his passes for 4,398 yards with 28 touchdowns and 13 interceptions and was unfazed by the knee injury.

Robert Griffin III (2012 season)

Griffin tore his right ACL in his rookie season, which was the best year of his NFL career, when he set a record for highest passer rating by a rookie quarterback (102.4). Griffin did not play in the preseason in 2013, but he returned for the season opener. He could not replicate the success in the first half he had as a rookie in 2012 and was replaced for the final three games of the season by Kirk Cousins. Griffin finished the 2013 season with a completion percentage of 60.1, throwing for 3,203 yards, 16 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Griffin has played in only 14 games since the 2013 season and was not with an NFL team in 2015 or 2017.

Sam Bradford (2013 and 2014 seasons)

Bradford first tore his ACL in his left leg during Week 7 of the 2013 season. He returned to the field for the preseason in 2014 but tore the same ACL when he was sacked. He missed the entire 2014 season. Bradford played in 14 games for the Eagles the following season, and while he struggled early on, he finished with 3,725 passing yards and 19 touchdowns with 14 interceptions. Bradford’s 2015 numbers were similar to his 2013 numbers. In 2016, after being traded to the Minnesota Vikings, Bradford had his best NFL season, throwing for 3,877 yards with 20 touchdowns and five interceptions.

Teddy Bridgewater (2016 season)

Bridgewater tore the ACL and did other damage to his left knee during an August practice in 2016. Because of the additional damage, Bridgewater’s recovery took longer than typical returns from ACL tears. Bridgewater was activated off the physically unable to perform list and added to the active roster in early November. He came in for Case Keenum in the fourth quarter of the Minnesota Vikings’ Week 15 game against the Bengals and attempted two passes, one of which was intercepted.

Many here were disappointed and critical when Deshaun Watson's final 2017 PFF rating came out as 75.1. Many consider the QBR to be the most accurate of all QB measures for overall performance.

Deshaun Watson 2017 QBR:

Week 1................55.3
Week 2................90.5
Week 3................49.9

PFF has been all over the place. I don't take them very seriously anymore.

Depends on how much Jimmy Graham wants. He's a suspect blocker for a TE. We *need lots of things but a TE that can help the T is one of them; as opposed to putting that eligible T at the end of the line.
Jimmy Graham on the field can negate those pass rushers.

After injuries, Texans' Watson, Foreman gear up for return

There is no way Watson's condition is not affecting his visual fields if not corrected medically (if it can be) for games. Since this is a type of condition I have routinely performed surgeries for, I have to wonder why he has not had it addressed. I could swear that I posted about this back in April when I noticed the condition, but I can't seem to find it.

It's so the defense can't read his eyes

Jordan Thomas from Miss St is 6'5 275 Lbs and pretty fast. He would be a great 6th rd pick. He may not be there. Reminds me of Mercedes Lewis.

TE Thomas/Anderson/Blocking TE either as UDFA or FA.

I wish they would've kept Tomlinson and, or Supernaw.

Ethan Wolf looks like a well rounded late rd TE.

I don't know where they get their 75.1 from, and where did that 75.1 rank?

His passer rating, which only takes into account completion percentage, TD and INT, was 103, which was 3rd best for QBs with over 200 attempted passes.

His Total QB Rating, an ESPN thing, which rates a QBs impact on the game, for example, a 5 yard completion on 3rd & 4 for a 1st down would rate better than a 5 yard completion on 3rd & 10, was an NFL best 81.5.

Granted, it was only 6 games, but still.

That's great but imagine the damage Watson could inflict on opposing defenses if he had a better OL, TE and running game. That extra second in the pocket could create havoc if Hopkins and Fuller just have time to separate from defenders. This also creates better opportunities for the running game.

Oh, I don't doubt that at all. Scrambling out of constant pressure is one thing. There's been a few who can do that. But to do it AND make a play downfield...that's what impressed me the most about Watson.

And with that, he still ranked as one of the best in the game by whatever measure you look at.

A better OL could have this offense doing record breaking things.

Does he have a lazy eye or what? I've always noticed that one eye is a bit saggy for lack of a better way of saying it. And would it have any impact on his play?

Gotta spend the $$$$ to protect the man.

I reposted my impressions on Watson's eye condition(s) in the Injury Thread, where I felt it was most appropriate.

This is the most recent free list I could find, which is after week 15.

https://www.profootballfocus.com/news/nfl-qb-rankings-by-pff-grade-after-week-15

He’d be ranked tied for 24th with Jacoby Brissett. Sounds like someone needs to reevaluate their scoring methods.
PFF has gotten so far off the reservation with some of their rankings that I mostly disregard them. I sometimes wonder if they're watching the same game as I am. Maybe there is a covert rugby league in England that mimics NFL teams?

"He's working hard to get back and I know he's ahead of schedule," O'Brien said. "I'm hoping ... that he can at least maybe participate in 7-on-7 [drills]. Maybe not team drills, but [maybe] he can do 7-on-7s or one-on-ones and things like that. But we'll see."

Per this great SI piece on him:

SI: What’s your status at this point?

DW: I’m just walking normal, that’s pretty much it. No crutches, no brace, I’ve haven’t had any of that stuff for a while. The next step is running. That comes with time, having the strength back in the leg and making sure it’s right.

Watson gives the coach too much credit. It ain't BOB that makes him good. Now let's just hope he can avoid injury long enough to become a superstar.

Well, I hope he avoids injury longer than that..... would suck to get an amazing QB.... he plays until he is undeniable THEN gets the injury bug.......but agreed.

Around the 19:00 mark; PFT with Deshaun

1) He was taking reps with the first team in training camp. (Media was saying he didn’t get many first team reps, which wasn’t true.)

2) He says, "I truly wasn’t prepared to take that next step right out the gate. OB knew it, Rick Smith knew it, and I agreed." (Remember that story about Rick not wanting Watson to start game one? Why was he in that discussion?)

From week 1 of training camp, O’Brien was walking around saying Watson was going to take this team to a Super Bowl one day.

3) The sucking up from Florio is sickening.

4) Repeated that he thinks his ACL happened vs. SEA.

5) Selling Old Spice.

6) "Great to have [O’Brien] back"… "I love watching Brady and hearing the stories and seeing how he got to where he is now." (Osweiler didn’t think there was anything for him to learn from Tom Brady.)

Watson said during one of his first interviews that he didn't get any 1st team reps. Now my question is who is lying?

It depends on when the Watson interview you referred to happened. Was it after OTAs or during training camp? I can see him not getting many 1st team reps during OTAs/Mini-camp. At that early stage, he's still trying to get the playbook in his head.

Now if it was mid-training camp or during pre-season.....

Savage was getting most of 1st team reps in OTAs/minicamp (for the good reason you mentioned). Beginning Aug 14 in TC is when he started seeing limited but more significant reps with the 1st team.

It was after his 2nd NFL start.

Jan 24, 2018 - -- Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson continues to be "ahead of schedule" as he rehabs his torn right ACL, and coach Bill O'Brien said Wednesday that he's hopeful Watson will be able to participate in at least some drills during the Texans' organized team activities.

Seeing Watson beginning to run on the treadmill (above video post), I was asked about how far "ahead of schedule" (as reflected by the recent media reports I've linked above) he might be.

Well, the average return to running after an ACL repair is 10-12 weeks................Watson was at 12 weeks for his first run. In the video, he has not returned to "normal" running. He is running on what is known as a very specialized ALTER G anti gravity treadmill..........a treadmill which can be set to regulate a runner's weight-bearing anywhere from 10-100% of his actual body weight. In that video, he would have been started at the 10% weight-bearing setting...........i.e., the equivalent of bearing only ~21.5 pounds of his 215 pounds.

So in all honesty, the "ahead of schedule" labeling has once again been overstated.

90% of all statistics on the subject say that at least half of "being ahead of schedule" is believing you're ahead of schedule so in this respect DeShaun is absolutely ahead of schedule. Hell he may even be "Way ahead of schedule" at this point (which is pretty damn far ahead of schedule).

The fact of the matter is that 60% of the time that's true every time.

It's the Texans. They've spent most of their existence far, far ahead of schedule and all of it on the right track. What's not to like? ;)
