NFL Random Thought of the Day

Not discounting the importance of having those additional practice sessions, but I wonder how much the ratio of ever more freak athletes we see cone into the league on defense versus how hard it is to continually find mammoth dudes to try and stay in front of them is simply a factor.

I think we should suggest a two alligator delay before the defense can rush the passer to the rules committee.

Ranking every NFL team (and the Jets) from most to least watchable

Ranked 25th most boring NFL Team to watch.
25. Texans

That's on Obrien and his offense.
Deshaun Watson makes this team a bit more entertaining to watch, but not by much. That Thursday night game against Cincinnati was a bore.

Eric Winston: If NFL wants more practice time, NFL should make a proposal
September 21, 2017, 11:28 AM EDT

The NFL wants to extend the labor deal. When those negotiations begin, the parties will launch into a point-by-point consideration of the relevant issues.

And, yes, they ultimately could be talkin’ about practice.

Six years ago, as the union relented to the league’s financial demands because the players had no desire to miss games, the NFL Players Association asked for reductions in padded practices and overall practice time. The NFL, realizing that it would cost them nothing to make that concession, happily agreed.

Now, many are pointing to reduced padded practices as a key reason for impaired offensive line play. Patriots coach Bill Belichick recently compared it to trying to become a good putter in golf without access to a practice green. the rest of the story

Tens of thousands of empty seats likely at Rams-49ers game
Posted by Michael David Smith on September 21, 2017, 12:03 PM EDT

The NFL has been struggling to sell tickets in California so far this season, and when two California teams meet tonight, empty seats will abound.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that tonight’s game could draw the worst crowd in the four-season history of Levi’s Stadium, based on data from ticket resale sites.

The cheapest face value ticket for a 49ers game is $85, but tickets are going for just $14 on StubHub for tonight’s game. Fans will take any price they can get to unload tickets to a game they don’t want to see.

It’s not just San Francisco where the NFL is struggling to sell tickets. Both Los Angeles teams, the Rams and Chargers, played in front of small crowds on Sunday. The Chargers couldn’t even fill up their tiny soccer stadium, while the Rams played in front of a half-full L.A. Coliseum the day after the USC-Texas game packed the house. Oakland is off to a hot start that has Raiders fans excited, but plenty of fans have been turned off by the team’s decision to move to Las Vegas.

The 49ers aren’t playing well enough to get the local fans excited, and Thursday night games are often a tough sell. Expect tens of thousands of empty seats in Santa Clara tonight.

found this paragraph quite interesting....

Another issue that has been pointed to is offensive line play. Through two weeks in 2017, only two offensive linemen in the entire league have graded as “Elite” according to Pro Football Focus: Falcons center Alex Mack and Steelers guard David DeCastro. Even the vaunted Cowboys offensive line, which features three former first-round picks, has averaged a poor 59.6 grade.

So it's not just us with O-line issues. It's league-wide. Tells me (with very few exceptions) there hasn't been much to work with, by way of O-line talent, coming out of the college ranks in recent years.

Can't make a silk purse when the colleges are by and large producing crops of sow's ears.

NFL suspends Ra’Shede Hageman six games
Posted by Charean Williams on September 22, 2017, 7:07 PM EDT

The NFL has suspended former Falcons defensive tackle Ra'Shede Hageman six games, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media first reported. The league placed him on the commissioner’s exempt list Sept. 2 as a result of domestic violence related charges, and the Falcons released him two days later.

Hageman, currently a free agent, does not need to be on a team to serve the suspension.

He was arrested in March 2016 on domestic violence charges stemming from an alleged incident with the mother of his child. Hageman faced misdemeanor charges of battery, cruelty to children and interfering with calls for emergency assistance, via the Associated Press.

Hageman, a second-round pick in 2014, made four sacks and 61 sacks in his three seasons in Atlanta.

Broadcasters said Bortles looked like he grabbed the side of his thigh when he went down near the end of the 1st half. To me it looked like he was reacting to a hamstring.

Flacco's back is definitely showing its effects..........he's coming up short on even intermediate passes, can't pass long, can't arch the ball and in general has lost his zip.

I missed the first half, just saw the highlights. & I'm like, "Whoa, WTF...."

Breaking News From The NFL:

BROWNS TO CONTINUE BOYCOTT OF WHITE HOUSE

The Browns' owner, Jimmy Haslam, revealed that the players and staff had an emotional closed door meeting following their third loss. Afterwards, Haslam released the following statement to the press: "The Cleveland Browns stand in unity in our vow to boycott the White House. Some things transcend sports, and the team feels the current political climate is one of those things. We have been boycotting the White House for the last 51 years, and I don't see that trend changing anytime soon."

wasn't there enough silly penalties for you today?

I’ve posted this before but the notion that he got an inordinate amount of penalties during his time here is false.

Not going to look it up again. Not that important. Was just a random thought after seeing him grow as a player during his time with Arizona and now the defensive captain with the Redskins playing well tonight and bringing some physicality to their back end.

Eagles RB Darren Sproles not only broke his arm in yesterday's game, but also ruptured his ACL. Out for the season.....likely career over. Tough luck for a great little player.............#34 since the beginning of TC / #36 since the beginning of the League year

Whatever happened to the rule change we were supposed to see this season...........automatic expulsion with egregious hits to the head? Such was the concern with Danny Trevathan's brutal helmet to helmet hit on Davante Adams which resulted in Adams being carted off the field.

The ref said he didn't have a good view of the play. That's fair, it happens. He'll get fined.

Adams has suffered injuries to his head, neck and has concussion-like symptoms. He actually briefly lost consciousness with question of momentary loss of limb sensation and movement. By the time he was placed on the stretcher, he had no signs of loss of sensation or movement. Although he was not ejected from the game on the spot, Trevathan may still be facing more than just a fine, i.e., a suspension after that "egregious" illegal hit.

The NFL is reviewing Danny Trevathan's hit on Davante Adams for a possible suspension.

8:40 AM - Sep 29, 2017 · Plymouth, MN

It is unclear if he will be allowed to play in the next game.

I was watching the UT game instead of the NFL.

Anybody got a Gif of the hit?

NFL suspends Danny Trevathan two games

Posted by Michael David Smith on September 30, 2017, 4:32 PM EDT

Bears linebacker Danny Trevathan has been suspended two games for his brutal hit that hospitalized Packers receiver Davante Adams on Thursday night.

The league announced Trevathan’s suspension today, two days after the hit on Thursday Night Football drew widespread condemnation and caused Adams to be carried off the field on a stretcher.

NFL V.P. of Football Operations Jon Runyan made the decision to suspend Trevathan based on the excessive nature of the hit, in which Trevathan lowered the crown of his helmet and appeared to directly target Adams’ head after Adams had already been wrapped up by other players.

Trevathan has the right to appeal. Either Derrick Brooks or James Thrash will hear Trevathan’s appeal.

If his appeal is not successful, Trevathan will miss next Monday night’s game against the Vikings and then the following Sunday’s game against the Ravens. He can return to the Bears’ roster on Monday, October 16 after their game against the Ravens on Sunday, October 15.

Derek Carr out injured with a lower back. That’s not gonna end up well for them.
They get imaging to rule out fractures. But the way it happened, I'd also worry about the possibility of damage to the kidneys. Wouldn't be surprised if he is peeing blood.
