NFL Random Thought of the Day

https://sports.yahoo.com/texans-bengals-headline-nfl-seasons-first-sorry-six-155249911.html

The NFL is a league of icons, a league of heroes, a league of teams that look history in the eye and say, “I own you.” But today, we’re not talking about those teams. We’re setting our sights …a little lower.

Welcome to the Sorry Six. These aren’t necessarily the worst teams in the NFL, but being terrible is a good way to make this list. No, this is for teams that underwhelm, underperform, and underdeliver each week. And guess what! The Browns and Jets aren’t on the list! At the moment, anyway.

Leading the pack, two teams that play Thursday night: the Houston Texans and the Cincinnati Bengals
Who else makes the list? Check out the video above. Spoiler: neither the Browns nor the Jets are there.

After all the commentaries that Florio has previously written that Elliot would not be suspended at all or suspended this year, his tone seems to have changed pretty significantly.

Elliott suspension could begin Week Three, at the earliest
Posted by Mike Florio on September 14, 2017, 2:47 PM EDT

As the NFL tries to pull the plug on the ruling that pulls the plug on the suspension of Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott, the appeals court could be plugging in the process of giving the league a ruling as soon as next week.

Per a league source, the NFL believes that a ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit staying the preliminary injunction blocking the suspension could happen by early next week. This would mean that Elliott, if the league wins, would begin to serve his six-game suspension as of Week Three (when the Cowboys facing the Cardinals on a Monday night), with the ability to continue to challenge the suspension in court. Though he’d be paid for the games he’d miss if successful, he’d likely miss the six games.

The NFL sees three potential scenarios, as the case progresses to the Fifth Circuit, viewing each as having reasonable prospects of occurring. First, the Fifth Circuit could quickly stay the injunction, having the suspension commence as soon as next week. Second, the Fifth Circuit could consider the appeal of the injunction on an expedited basis, which would delay the start of the suspension (if the NFL prevails on the appeal) deeper into the season. Third, the Fifth Circuit could consider the appeal in the normal course of business, which as a practical matter would allow Elliott to play for the full season, given the usual time frames for resolving cases on appeal.

The league sees the second option as a compromise, and thus as possibly a bit more likely than the other two. This would delay the suspension to a later point of the season, starting maybe a month from now or later. In theory, it could impact Elliott’s availability for the postseason.

The NFL’s overriding goal seems to be immediately putting in front of the appeals court not the question of whether the injunction is appropriate but whether the entire case is appropriate. The league believes that the Texas federal court lacks jurisdiction over the dispute, for multiple reasons: The NFL believes that Elliott filed the case too early, and that the case should be handled by a federal court in New York. With the Texas judge still considering that issue, the appeal of the injunction adroitly provides, as a practical matter, a way to get the issue of jurisdiction before the appeals court even before the Texas judge rules on that question.

However the legal process plays out, it’s clear that the NFL intends to push this issue aggressively, because the NFL believes that the Texas court lacks jurisdiction, and because the league believes it can achieve a slam-dunk victory if/when the case ends up out of Texas and in New York, where the outcome of the Tom Brady case would represent what the lawyers call “binding precedent,” mandating (in theory) the New York court to quickly affirm the suspension.

Jerry Sandusky's son yesterday was convicted of 14 counts of child sex abuse.......a new segment of "All in the Family." In Dec 2014, his father received a letter from Penn State asking him to renew his season ticket plan for the football team..........wonder if his son will be given the same opportunity.................:chef:

After the Saints and other teams evaluated him for a position and all turned him down, he had his rights taken up by the CFL's Tiger-Cats coached by June Jones. The CFL has given an extremely unusual extension for the evaluation time by the league before having to make a decision. They probably want to check his pupils and breath daily amongst other things for at least a month...........or a year or so...............:barman:
CFL extends window to mull Johnny Manziel possibility

Luck still not practicing. But everyone's so excited that he is watching for the first time.:kingkong:

Zak Keefer @zkeefer

Andrew Luck isn't practicing today, but he's on the sideline watching the other QBs. This is new.

Zak Keefer @zkeefer

I imagine this is an indicator he's getting closer. First time we've seen him on the sidelines since camp. https://twitter.com/zkeefer/status/908382924034240512 …

I didn't know this, but Aaron Rodgers has only thrown ONE Pick-six in his entire career!! The one that was called back last game would have doubled his stat. But his amazing stat still stands.

Was watching the Cowboys Broncos game, when all of a sudden there was a switch to the Redskins Rams.........with no explanation. I've now found out that the Dallas game has been suspended due to weather.

I was watching the game as well, but I clearly heard the official call an official's time out due to in climate weather. I switched to the red zone & they stated those watching the Cowboy's game would be switched to the Skins until further notice. May be delayed as much as an hour.

Didn't hear that.............I have U-verse......and you?

Tony Romo is awesome!

Breaking NFL news...

Romo Strains Vocal Cords In Booth, Out Eight To Ten Weeks

Tony Romo's commentary from the broadcasting booth early this season has impressed some viewers, which makes it all the more disappointing that he’ll be missing eight to ten weeks with a vocal cord injury.

“Wow!” exclaimed Romo a little too forcefully in the final moments of today's game, straining his vocal cords on a call that didn’t even need to be made. Romo then appeared to clutch his throat as his head fell straight onto the announcer’s table. As the game clock ticked down, production assistants helped carry him out of the booth to seek medical attention.

Shouldn't that have put him in the concussion protocol?

Concussions are not migraines. They can coincide following trauma. Back in college, Kizer demonstrated a history of migraines. One of the most common triggers of migraines is dehydration........and this is the most likely cause in today's incident. Concussion and migraine symptoms can be differentiated, specifically if there is an aura experienced prior to the migraine (which is likely the case that led to him avoiding the concussion protocol and allowing to return to play).

Great moves, NFL......Same results as previous attempts.

USC outdraws Rams, Chargers . . . combined

Yeah, I just never got the LA thing. The NFL thrived without football in LA for a couple of decades or so. Now you have 2 teams there that nobody gives a damn about, just as the whole planet suspected. And if they ever did care it'd be for the Rams.

NOBODY in LA cares about the Chargers and everybody in SD hates them for leaving. There's the team that would probably be better off moving across the pond.

Sam Bradford was a last minute scratch last Vikings game. He had been having knee pain throughout practices the week before. That was worrisome due to the fact that he had ACL surgeries on the same left knee in 2013 and 2014. Initial MRI was negative. Now it appears that a diagnosis of "bone bruise" has been made. Depending on the type and where the bone bruise is (weight vs non-weight bearing area), he can be out for just another week to several weeks to even several months. As far as actual total healing, where it is unlikely to suffer further damage from additional trauma, it could take as little as 3 weeks or as long as 2 years. It could also develop into a chronic knee issue. If enough blood supply to the bone occurs, pieces of the bone may become necrotic (die). Bone bruises can also develop into a chronic knee issue, as any overlying cartilage may be damaged leading to osteoarthritis. The interesting thing to note, and is not talked about much, is that in 80% of ACL ruptures, there occurs bone bruising with potential for progressive arthritis. Bradford's entire history puts his recent injury in a more concerning light.

I've looked into this account every now and then............pretty funny like these latest entries:

This is getting ridiculous! For instance: Matthew Stafford quarterback for the Detroit Lions annual salary 27 million. That's $1,687,500 per game. That's for like 3 hours of playing football. Well not even that really but I mean this is getting crazy. Where does this end?

DeMaurice Smith reelected as NFLPA executive director unanimously. You can be sure the new CBA will leave the owners happy and the other side screwed................sounds much like another Smith I know.

What I and many others have been concerned about since the "practice" terms of the CBA were first announced. Yes, in the ignorant words of another sport's athlete............"It's practice, it's only practice, we talkin' bout practice........"

Bill Polian: NFL offensive line play ‘worst in my memory’

by SiriusXM NFL Radio Staff • September 19, 2017

It has only been two weeks, and already one of the major topics of the NFL season is the struggles of multiple offensive lines.

Never was that more evident than in the New York Giants’ loss against the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football. The Giants’ offensive line performed terribly, leading to Eli Manning and the rest of their passing game having little or no chance to make plays.

‘Most importantly, they can’t develop in the offseason’

Bill Polian thinks the reason is clear. The Hall-of-Fame NFL general manager and SiriusXM NFL Radio co-host sees the basic problem as a lack of practice time during the offseason, in accordance with the rules of the league’s collective bargaining agreement with its players.

“And, as a result, you end up, because they can’t practice, develop as young players, because they’re coming out of college systems that are diametrically opposed to what we do in the NFL,” Polian said on Late Hits with Alex Marvez. “And they can’t develop during the season, because you can’t put them in pads, and most importantly, they can’t develop in the offseason because during OTAs, they can’t be in pads, which I don’t think they need to be. But they do need to work one-on-one against defensive linemen.

‘I have never seen tackles, particularly, whiff the way they do now’

“That doesn’t have to be a kill-you tempo. It doesn’t even have to be a contact tempo. But it’s forbidden by the collective bargaining agreement and it is directly responsible for the quality of offensive line play we have in the league now, which is the worst in my memory. I have never seen tackles, particularly, whiff the way they do now. It’s pathetic in many ways.”

Polian thinks the NFL and the NFL Players Association can take a lesson from the career of one of the game’s all-time great tackles, Joe Thomas.

‘Joe Thomas … just like batting practice, he went out there every day and practiced his trade’

“The bottom line here is something has to be done to improve to technique and the repetitions available, particularly for young offensive linemen coming into the league,” Polian said. “And it’s no secret, albeit Joe Thomas’ great ability, that he developed really well as a player because he had OTAs where, just like batting practice, he went out there every day and practiced his trade. It wasn’t in pads, it wasn’t full go, but he practiced his trade, his honed his craft. And they can’t do it anymore. It’s that simple.”
