NFL Random Thought of the Day

There have been 231 torn ACL's in the NFL since 2013. On average half occur during OTA's/preseason. Here's the current breakdown from the Acl Recovery Club.:

DIbMx05UQAAcaci.jpg

Teams have almost twice as many players on the roster in the preseason, so it makes sense that there would be more players injured in the preseason, but if it's half, that's still about double the rate during the regular season.

Bengals 1st round pick WR John Ross left this evening with a left knee injury. He injured his right knee in September 2014, and although he didn’t miss any games, he underwent postseason surgery to repair two meniscus tears. He returned a few months later and tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, which required surgery in April 2015. He's been rehabbing a torn shoulder labrum for which he underwent surgery following the 2017 Combine.

With his history, another ACL would not be unexpected.

After showing off his rocket arm, Patrick Mahomes will sit
Posted by Michael David Smith on September 1, 2017, 10:09 AM EDT

Of all the highly drafted quarterbacks in this year’s rookie class, Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes is the least likely to play this year because he’s gone to the team with the most established quarterback, Alex Smith. But Mahomes put on a show in the preseason.

In last night’s preseason finale, Mahomes threw some incredible passes, including a deep ball from the pocket that traveled nearly 60 yards in the air and landed in his receiver’s hands, and two impressive on-target throws while he was rolling to his right.

Whether Mahomes will ever become a great NFL quarterback remains to be seen. While he didn’t throw any interceptions in the preseason, he did throw some bad passes that easily could have been intercepted, and he doesn’t have the consistency Andy Reid would want to see before making a switch at quarterback.

But that arm is a beauty. Mahomes will sit behind Smith for now, but the time is coming when we’re going to get to see that arm every Sunday. And it will be a lot of fun to watch.

Won't be surprised in the least if this kid turns out to a generationally special qb.

Bears OLB Lamarr Houston last night sustained a knee injury. Unfortunately Houston was playing out the second half because the Bears are lacking depth at outside linebacker. He has a history of already having suffered two ACL tears. He suffered his first torn ACL celebrating an absolutely meaningless sack of Patriots back-up quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in the fourth quarter of a game the Bears were losing 48-23 in October 2014. The first ACl was of his right knee, the second sustained September last year, was of his left. Having watched last night's play, it was a non-contact injury, consistent with an ACL. I would be surprised if it is not an ACL. Will be awaiting MRI results.

Patriots CB Cyrus Jones looked to me to have sustained an ACL last night. This morning, MRI confirms ACL with meniscus tear................#28 (since beginning of TC / #30 since the beginning of the League year).

Bridgewater will go into the season on PUP. There is hope by the team that he will come back later this season. I have very significant doubts that will happen, and if it does, he still may not be able to perform well enough.

49ers S Don Jones suffered a torn ACL in Thursday's preseason game against the Chargers..............#29 (since beginning of TC / #31 since the beginning of the League year).

The Jaguars are 42-102 since the 2008 season. They’re gambling big moves can change that.

To illustrate last year’s struggles, Jaguars coach Doug Marrone used an off-season meeting to present a series of statistics about the AFC South and his team’s standing.

“We were way behind in all of the major categories,” linebacker Paul Posluszny said.

Points allowed: 400, most.

Takeaways: 13, fewest.

Turnovers: 29, most.

Wins: 3, fewest.

The Jaguars have spent the last nine years way behind in the major categories, including 30th in points scored, 31st in point differential and 31st in victories.

It is well past time for the Jaguars to catch up to the rest of the division and rest of the NFL, to see their high draft picks produce at an elite level and have their free-agent splurges match or exceed their past performance.

Owner Shad Khan is betting on that happening this year. THE REST OF THE STORY

Sammie Coates was just traded to the Browns from the Steelers for a 6th rd pick. He sure would've looked good on the Texans

Say what? Two years ago when he had one catch off of two targets? That two years ago?

I was thinking of his days at Auburn.

I'm all thrown off helping mother in law clean up.

Anyway broken fingers will cause a case of the dropsies I think you would agree.

Texans DE Mathew Godin suffered an ACL rupture..............#30 (since beginning of TC / #32 since the beginning of the League year). The number of ACLs during 2017 have now surpassed the all-time 2013 total of 31. There have been quite a few players that have been placed on IR this League year as "knee injury" or "knee undisclosed".........I suspect that some of those have been ACLs. Godin's injury was at least correctly identified albeit after a long delay

Willie Snead IV has been hit with a three-game suspension for violating the league's policy on substance of abuse but is expected to return October 1.

According to Howard Balzer of Pro Football Xchange, the NFL has seen 24 trades involving 29 players over the past week. That includes 12 trades involving 14 players Saturday, and the day still isn’t over.

Seventeen teams were involved in trades before Saturday and another eight teams joined the fun Saturday. That means only the Bears, Packers, Texans, Chargers, Dolphins, Raiders and Bucs didn’t make a trade.

Last year, in the week of cuts to 75 and then 53, the league had 11 trades involving 13 players.

They are calling Paxton Lynch's shoulder injury a shoulder joint "sprain." This must be an A-C joint separation...........and if it is like Savage's injury (at least a Grade II), it will take at least 6-8 weeks from the time of injury for him to return to play.

Interesting to note is that this is not the first A-C separation that Lynch has sustained. One of his separations included a chipped end piece of the clavicular segment making up the A-C joint. Since he has already had multiple separations, this is likely to be a recurrent problem.

It's been a back and forth story. My guess is the concussion that left him with long term vision problems has led to his questioning if he wishes to pursue an NFL career.

Washington puts Su’a Cravens on the “left squad” list
September 3, 2017, 5:53 PM EDT

Despite reports suggesting that Washington safety Su'a Cravens was talked out of retiring, the team’s official roster move regarding Cravens suggests he’s closer to walking away than staying.

Per a league source, Cravens is on the exempt/left squad list. If he doesn’t return within five days of receiving notice from the team regarding the consequences of not returning, he’ll be placed on the reserve/left squad list and done for the year.

Although Washington has not yet closed the door on Cravens, initiation of the exempt/left squad procedure forces a player’s hand. And if the player doesn’t come back, the player won’t be playing at all this year.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Raiders and Janikowski are not coming together. Janikowski is owed $4 million this year..........and the Raiders want him to take a substantial cut.

If the Bucs and Dolphins don't get their game played by Friday, it ain't getting played in week 1.

Jerruh just needs to shut up and let things play out with the attorneys. His interview is a disjointed and unintelligible clumping of words.

Jerry Jones promises “good news” on Ezekiel Elliott

update at your link

UPDATE 12:33 p.m. ET: A prior version of this post, based on a transcript of Jones’ appearance that was circulated to Cowboys beat writers, indicated that Jones said he would have “good news,” not “more news.” Jones actually said “more news.” His comments are still news, just not as big of news as they would have been if he’d said “good news.”

Harold Henderson upholds Ezekiel Elliott’s six-game suspension
Posted by Charean Williams on September 5, 2017, 8:33 PM EDT

Harold Henderson upheld Ezekiel Elliott‘s six-game suspension, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen first reported, but that doesn’t mean it’s over.

Elliott will play against the Giants on Sunday as the arbitrator’s decision came after the league’s own 4 p.m. deadline for implementation of suspensions. The NFL confirmed in court that Elliott would be on the field, per a source.

Elliott attended a more than two-hour hearing in a Sherman, Texas, courtroom Tuesday in an effort to block the suspension pending outcome of the lawsuit filed by Elliott on Friday.

Judge Amos L. Mazzaint III is expected to rule Friday on the preliminary injunction motion, per a source.

Henderson heard the appeal over three days last week, and rendered his decision during court.

Ezekiel Elliott’s legal team: Harold Henderson unable “to navigate through legal politics”
Posted by Charean Williams on September 5, 2017, 8:53 PM EDT

Ezekiel Elliott‘s legal team had a statement ready, obviously expecting arbiter Harold Henderson to uphold the six-game suspension the NFL imposed on the star running back.

Only minutes after Henderson rendered his decision, near the end of a court hearing in Sherman, Texas, Elliott’s attorneys reacted, via ESPN’s Adam Schefter:

“We received arbitrator Harold Henderson’s decision to uphold Mr. Elliott’s suspension of six games. We are extremely disappointed with Mr. Henderson’s inability to navigate through legal politics, and follow the evidence, and, most importantly, his conscious. The evidence that Mr. Elliott and his team presented on appeal clearly demonstrated that Mr. Elliott was the victim of a conspiracy orchestrated by the National Football League and its officers to keep exonerating evidence from the decision-makers, including the advisors and Roger Goodell. The only just decision was to overturn the suspension in its entirety. Mr. Elliott is looking forward to having his day in federal court where the playing field will be level and the NFL will have to answer for its unfair and unjust practices.”

Judge Amos L. Mazzaint III is expected to rule by Friday on the preliminary injunction motion, per a source.
