The Actual and Real 2017 Texans Talk Mock Draft Extravaganza

Suggestion for next year. Why don't we have a schedule where picks are made at a certain time.
Example.
12 noon. 10 picks
4 pm 10 picks
8 pm 10 picks.

It would work like this. All picks are turned into a moderator. If you're the first pick at a scheduled time you turn your pick via PM before scheduled time. If you're the second pick you turn in two names, third three names up to the 10th pick of scheduled time slot. At time say noon moderator publishes the ten picks according to boards sent in. At that point the clock starts for next allotted time.

If someone doesn't turn on their board then we do as we do now. We take a vote. That way we actually have a scheduled time to check in and hopefully more people will be involved in the group selections.

Each day at given times, 12-4-8 we know the picks are to be posted and we can schedule to be there. The way it is now we have to constantly check in and sometimes there is only a couple of picks in a hour other times there are 10 in an hour. If we use this format we can do 30 picks a day and only have to check in three times per day.

It would also help if someone would post a bigboard from a popular site and remove names as there picked and place them in a results thread like we currently do. This would make putting our boards together easier and help things go more smoothly.

Just a suggestion. Any thoughts?? Feel free to respond honestly I won't be insulted. Not that anyone should care. Lol. Just seems like we need to be better organized. Early in the day when I'm at work sometimes it's hard to keep up with the current picks.

thanks for getting my pick guys, I knew I was going to be tied up all day and forgot to get my list in.

I'm good with the pick so thanks

I like it. I think there has to be some list based system. Maybe even to get thru this draft before the real thing begins.

Everybody should have their own lists. I use CBS and have a good idea of 4-5 guys I want before my pick.

It's easy to keep up with who's picked, just got to the TT Mock Draft Selection thread.

Any and all who sign up to partake constructing a draft for specific team should have a list of favorite players @ positions of need for that team and act accordingly. It's not this difficult, I mean, if I can do it, have done it for more than 10 years on this board, anybody can :shades:

With pick# 123, Washington selects:

Daeshon Hall - DE, Texas A&M

The Skins have brought in some big uglies in free agency to man the defensive front, now we're using the draft to upgrade the athleticism of the 2nd unit. Look for Hall to come in on passing situations and bring the heat.

I think it was Dutchrudder a few years back who made a pick schedule. Was something like...

1 (1) - 7:00am
1 (2) - 8:00am
1 (3) - 9:00am
1 (4) - 10:00am
etc.

I remember that draft running very smooth but it also took a ton of work for Dutch to pull it off.

Via PM, @steelbtexan selects @pick #125 for Tampa Bay:

Chase Roullier - C, Wyoming

Tampa Bay really needs to improve their OL and this guy is my #3 C in this draft. Lamp/Feeney/Roullier. It didn't surprise me that he tested well at the combine. He's a tough guy that understands blocking schemes and should be able to start early.

A team leader and 10 yr starter. IMHO I don't care that CBS has him ranked in the 6th rd. From what I watched of him, he's going to be good. Thank Bah for telling me about him. I really enjoyed watching this guy play.

The Vikings have some big decisions after this year at the QB position. Renegotiate Bradford and sign Bridgewater to a 5th year extension and pay 2 qb’s starter salaries – or let Bradford walk, or trade Bridgewater. Bridgewater is said to be doing well w/ his rehab after his dislocated knee but the return timetable is uncertain – they’re hoping he’ll be back during the season so they can test his knee in game situations and know what they have or showcase him for a trade. Either way, they’re unlikely to retain both Bradford and Bridgewater and will likely be looking for a cheaper backup for whoever remains or insurance against losing Bradford to FA and Bridgewater's injury.

Vikings select Brad Kaaya
kaaya.jpg

Pro-style pocket passer with good mechanics. Has arm limitations but understands this and rarely takes unnecessary chances throwing into space. Has shown the ability to read a defense and work through progressions fairly quickly.

@banned1976 is on the clock – pick 129 Raiders

Houston group pick 130 on deck

The Oakland Raiders select Dawuane Smoot, EDGE Illinois

Final Thoughts (from Fox Sports):

Overall, Dawuane Smoot is a talented NFL prospect that has the movement skills and athleticism needed to make an impact. His powerful hands and speed will serve him well as he transitions from the college game to the professional level. If he is able to develop a deeper pass rushing arsenal while learning to maintain control as he rushes, he should contribute to a NFL team sooner than later.

Three names to consider Damonte Kazee CB, Josh Harvey-Clemons S, and George Kittle TE, Also Corn Elder CB

I would have to vote for Josh Harvey-Clemons. He did have the drug issues, but they seem to be behind him. I think Vrabel would really enjoy utilizing a guy with his size and skill set. In the box safety, nickel LB, can matchup with TEs.

Jalen Myrick. Could start at slot CB and give flexibility to play Jackson at S.

I like Myrick too, but he has just enough flaws that I would rather have Johnson. I have some concern over Myrick's hips... and his combine didn't really make me feel any better about them.

I wouldn't dislike the pick (indeed, he is probably my second choice here), but I think Johnson is a better selection. Also, if you are looking for position flexibility, I think Johnson fits that to a T.

A few scouting reports

NFL
Johnson

  • 6'0"HEIGHT
  • 32"ARM LENGTH
  • 208LBS.WEIGHT

  • 6.72 SEC 3 cone
  • 4.18 SEC Short Shuttle
OVERVIEW

Johnson's career with the Eagles ended on a high note, beating his home-state team, Maryland, in the Quick Lane Bowl. He had 12 tackles (11 solo) in the contest, capping off an excellent senior season (77 tackles, 2.5 for loss, three interceptions, nine pass breakups). In 2015, Johnson got on scouts' radars as a first-year starter (63 tackles, 1.5 for loss, three INT, three PBU). He may have done so as a sophomore, but missed the last five regular season games of the year with an arm injury before coming back for the bowl game (25 tackles on the year, two PBU). The second-team all-state pick from Maryland contributed in all 12 games as a freshman, picking up four tackles and a fumble recovery.

ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS
Has starting experience as cornerback and safety. Can play high safety or cover the slot. Plays with smooth hips and above average mirror and match footwork for the safety spot. At ease with directional changes in space. Adequate instincts in coverage. Will shade his coverage from high safety based on play development and quarterback's glances. Winning ball skills with very good ball tracking and soft hands. Interceptions don't just come his way, he goes and gets them. Has agility to take zig-zag downhill track to running backs. Bounces into run fits with lively feet and a tackle-ready base. Special teams monster with 30 tackles over the last three seasons on cover teams.
WEAKNESSES
Tends to take passive routes to the ball when he's the last line of defense. Leverages to the sideline while drifting backwards rather than closing downhill. Features a small delay at top of his transition when triggering. Needs to improve physicality as a tackler. Feet deaden near point of impact. Needs to drive through his target and finish with his feet.
SOURCES TELL US
"He's really caught my eye out here. Had to go look him up with one of our scouts to find out more about the kid. Way more athletic than a lot of the safeties you see out at this game." -- NFC secondary coach
NFL COMPARISON
Aaron Williams
BOTTOM LINE
Ascending defender with the experience, athleticism and ball skills to play as a high safety or in man coverage. Johnson is well above average as a ball-tracker and has the soft hands to finish at the catch-point against receivers. He has decent size but won't be a banger as a tackler, however, his ability in coverage has NFL personnel men buzzing as a potential early starter in the league.

Harvey Clemons

  • 6'4"HEIGHT
  • 35 3/8"ARM LENGTH
  • 217LBS.WEIGHT
  • 10 3/8"

  • 12 REPS Bench
  • 31.5 INCH Vert
  • 121.0 INCH BJ

OVERVIEW

Two suspensions for failed marijuana tests led to Harvey-Clemons' dismissal from Georgia. In the end, it may have worked out for the best as he was able to transfer to Louisville to join his defensive coordinator with the Bulldogs, Todd Grantham. His career in Athens started off well, as the number one outside linebacker recruit in the country had 14 tackles in a reserve role. He started 11 games as a sophomore at Georgia, making 66 stops and an interception on the year. He was suspended for the opener, though, due to team rules violation, as well as for the team's bowl game. Harvey-Clemons then sat out 2014 while transferring, but came out strong for the 'Ville, earning honorable mention All-ACC notice (88 tackles, two for loss, three interceptions, six pass breakups.) He was a second-team all-conference pick this fall despite missing two games due to injury (61 tackles, four for loss, two sacks).

ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS
Rangy, long frame with exceptionally long limbs. Arm length is what offensive line coaches look for in a tackle. Plays the game with edge and embraces physical requirement of the position. First responder who races downhill into the action. Rarely taps the brakes into his tackles. Square-up, wrap-up finisher. Took on blocks with aggressiveness and leverage when asked to play inside linebacker. His long arms help cast wide net as tackler. Rare athleticism for his size. Flips hips for instant change of direction as tackler or in coverage. Excellent range as a tackler. Plays faster than his timed speed. Communicative on the field. Balances attention between quarterback's eyes and assignments around him as two-deep safety. Quick to find coverage work after diagnosing play-action from the box. Adjusts coverage responsibilities based on scrambling direction of quarterback.
WEAKNESSES
Skinny legs. Needs more discipline in playing with inside-out leverage in run support. Downhill GPS to running backs needs fine tuning. Tends to attack at angles under running back, forcing too many diving attempts on perimeter. Can be a little slow hustling back to high safety spot from disguised coverages. Deshaun Watson picked on him in coverage. From single-high position, needs anticipation and earlier response to throws. Will lose sight of deep responsibilities as high safety at times. Panics and grabs when he fears he's beaten. Needs to trust his length and recover speed more often. Dismissed from Georgia after three strikes, including failed marijuana tests.
SOURCES TELL US
"I love the athlete and the toughness, but he's a multiple-time (drug) tester on the college level. Those guys have a high rate of testing positive again. I need to do more background work on him but I really worry about suspensions for him." -- AFC North area scout
NFL COMPARISON
Kam Chancellor
BOTTOM LINE
Former five-star recruit with an alpha mentality who roams the field with swagger and undeniable intent as a tackler. Has elite size, length and athletic traits, and is a rangy tackler with the ability to cover and blitz. He could be considered by teams as a box safety or hybrid linebacker.

That stiffness showed in his 3cone 7.06.

Johnson works for me we need help at Safety.

Does anyone think Miller can hold up with as many carries this year. We've lost depth and no one that can carry the load if Miller goes down. On top of that Miller was very disappointing. He runs into the back of the OL way to much and seldom gets yards after contact. Give me James Conner.

I agree with but I think there are still fair amount of decent backs left, Safety has been picked pretty clean and there aren't many guys left.
