Texans at Tennessee's pro day today.

8:08 AM - 31 Mar 2017

Notable prospects:

Jason Croom TE
Joshua Dobbs QB
Jalen Reeves-Maybin OLB
Josh Malone WR
Cameron Sutton CB
Alvin Kamara RB
Derek Barnett DE

I really think that OB is wanting this guy to be our QB. He sounds like an OB type QB. OB likes smart QBs and this dude is like an engineer.
I tell you what. I like the throws I saw him make in the Senior Bowl.

Gotta have a big head for a big brain, right. But he's a weird lookin brother, but if he can sling it and play some QB for us I say good deal and it's win all the way around for everybody.

Texas wide receiver Jacorey Warrick has been invited to the Texans' local prospect workout Saturday, according to a source not authorized to speak publicly.

The Cypress Falls graduate was named Academic All-Big 12. For his career, caught 46 career passes for 489 yards and three touchdowns. As a senior, he caught 30 passes for 360 yards and three scores.

You say this as if FAs aren't valuable in any way.

Yeah, who wants those discarded FAs? Apparently everyone except the Texans.

Strange argument.
Not at all. In the past we've made some great free agent additions.

But the team has to look at who is becoming available and, with the coaches' help, decide if anybody on the F/A list (a) will actually fit into the schemes we are running and (b) are enough better than the guys they have, have been grooming on the practice squad, or might find in the draft.

Two I identified, that I thought might be good fits were Kirk Cousins and Dontari Poe. Both are gone. I don't see anyone else worth going after.

I haven't heard anyone say, definitively, this guy or that guy fits our system and we should go get him. All I've heard is "all the other cool kids have one, why don't we".

Yeah, that's a strange argument @ObsiWan. The team could have used upgraded at multiple spots, not that they needed to add players at all those positions, but there were players available to add across the board.

What makes the argument so strange is that your point about scheme and ability applies to every team, yet every other team signed someone to their roster.

Ya gotta know when to hold'em... know when to fold'em.

FA isn't over.
You said it much better than I.
We're not yet one month into free agency.
It's entirely possible that we didn't want to pay what the other guys did for the few FAs we might have been interested in.
FAs tend to back off lofty contract expectations the closer we get to TC and preseason.

I identified two specific guys I would have liked to see here. Where are yours?
tell me who you think we missed, where they signed, and how much they got to sign, otherwise, it's just whining.

Edit: Okay, not really whining but complaining about an incomplete process.

Is it just me or does it seem like the Texans are bringing in a lot of former local HS players?

Deon Hollins - Marshall HS
Jomal Wiltz - North Shore HS
Kelvin Rainey - Stratford HS
Kade Harrington - Kingwood HS
Derek Griffin - Rosenberg Terry HS
Adam Jones - Seven Lakes HS

This is just some of the players I found but there's probably more. Don't think any of these will get drafted but will probably end up as UDFA's.

They hold a local workout for prospects every year before draft.

So, is it a "local workout for prospects" like you say or a local prospects workout? I know they have local workouts for the prospects, but this is like all the prospects that went to HS in the Houston area have a workout with them. Just curious. I just don't remember this happening before.

Zach Brown ILB Redskins signed for 4.5 mil which includes incentives.

Tell me what has Rick McNair accomplished this offseason that I haven't? Losing his top CB/SS and signing his P/PK is awe inspiring. Tell me what are the other 31 teams doing/have done?

It's like Ricky McNair is willing to give up on the coming season to re-sign Hopkins/Clowney and get BOB fired.

Maybe the plan is to tank with Savage, fire OB, then draft a QB with our high pick next year?

Or maybe there is no plan. Just winging it.

That appears to be the plan. This is why in a way I hope Ricky doesn't draft a QB and uses the picks to fill the holes like 2 OL and a CB/S or 2. That would give Savage/Weeden/BOB a better chance to keep their jobs. Which is why I expect them to pick a QB in Rd.1 this yr. Which is kinda bad since the 2018 draft has Darnold/Rosen/Stidham and a couple of other guys I cant think of right now.

If that happens Ricky needs to own his QB pick.

Only one of those guys I would draft 1st round is Darnold. He's a stud. Rosen is overrated and also has zero intangibles. Serious Ryan Leaf vibe with him. Stidham has thrown a grand total of 109 passes in his college career.

So what? If RAC/Vrabel wanted Brown here, he'd be here. Or I guess you think Smith is holding out on RAC/Vrabel too.

Unless you can show me where RAC, O'Brien, Vrabel, etc. said guy X is a fit for their side of the ball and we didn't at least bring him in, then it's just whining.

O'Brien values guys that can work within his system (whatever it is) and no one has pointed to a guy who has experience in this offense but we failed to talk to him. Hell we even picked up Wes Welker who, I hope, will help train the WR/TEs on the finer points of route running in this offense. Hopefully that move will make who we already have better.

...Oh and the Texans re-signed Ryan Griffin. You didn't do that.
:D

The 31 other teams operate differently than the Texans do.

Bottom line for me is the way Ricky operates will never win a championship.

Glad that you've been happy with the current direction of the franchise for the last decade. I'm not and I would guess that would make me a whiner in your book. Ricky just isn't good enough at his job to bring a championship to this city. There's now a decade of proof and how people can continue to defend the job this man is doing is beyond me.

But go ahead and knock yourself out. One thing I'm sure of is we will continue to have this conversation every offseason until Ricky is no longer in charge of the personnel dept. In short Ricky just doesn't do the work that's needed like BB/Ozzie/Elway/Carroll etc...

Well then we will have to disagree and watch a lot of college football next yr. I bet you will be closer to my way of thinking after next yr.

I doubt it. And that's not a shot at you. Every year people talk about the next class of QB's and then we get to the next year and people start talking about the next class of QB's. It never fails.

QB is an incredibly tough position to fill and the reason is because there is a lack of elite prospects. It's a very tough position to develop.

Here's what most consider to the be the top 5 QB prospects next year.

Sam Darnold (R-So, USC)
- Great talent but if he declares he will be coming out as just a sophomore and prospects with that limited amount of experience tend to struggle with transition.

Josh Rosen (Jr, UCLA)
- Anointed a top-5 pick as a recruit but has only completed 59% of his passes and has 33 TD / 16 INT in 2 years as starter and scouts already question his attitude and love for football.

Mason Rudolph (Sr, Oklahoma State)
- Air raid QB. Checks boxes but pre-draft will be very important to see how much success is his talent or Mike Gundy offense.

Luke Falk (R-Sr, Washington State)
- Air raid QB. Checks boxes but pre-draft will be very important to see how much success is his talent or Mike Leach offense.

Josh Allen (R-Jr, Wyoming)
- Checks all the boxes physically but only completed 56% of his passes and threw 15 INT's in first year as a starter.

Hopefully he's looking down the road. I'd hate for Texian to have to get on him again for not having any cap space. The Jags have been killing us in cap space the last 10 years or so.

He's been looking down the road for a decade and counting.

But hey, he's made millions and will make millions more doing a 9-7, 7-9 job, so what do I know?
