Texans trade Osweiller to Browns

If no one is signed and you can get him out of the locker room without trading him for a second round pick, how is it not a flop? I don't understand that.

Or, it could be the perfect storm. We load up on the O'Line this draft & the QB situation causes us to tank next year. The 2018 draft class is reportedly deep in quality QB's & if our record puts us in the top 10, we have a more than realistic shot at getting our Franchise QB next year to play behind a revamped O'Line with a year of experience playing together. With all the pieces we have now & the addition of a starting RT & RG to go along with the return of Martin at center, we could be set to go on a run for several year's in a row. Just trying to look on the positive side.

But how is any of that helped by the trade? You just described a situation that has nothing to do with the trade. Actually, the potential there is hurt by the trade.

I think it's more that there aren't a lot of guys projected to be elite. There seems to be plenty of guys that are projected post round 1, and it's not as if those guys can't turn out to be elite.

Dude, you've got to let it go. The trade is over & done. The cap space can be used to lock up our guys & acquire talent to fill our depth charts. What I posted is if we miss out on Romo & are left with what we have now. The cap space could also be used to go after Cousins or some other high priced surprise free agent next year.

Cam Robinson has a real good chance of being there at 25 & good guards always drop into the 2nd round. We don't need any elite linemen (although it would be nice), just solid ones. I believe we can get that in this draft.

You missed the point, I guess. I can't really ask the question any clearer.
We've not been active in FA this year, many of the impact FAs, especially at need spots, are gone. We have $72M in space next year. You give $24M of that to Clowney and Hopkins, $6M to Osweiler, and I still don't see how we are precluded from going after a surprise FA next year, while also re-signing our other guys.

Having spoken to a Texans player, Osweiler was pretty well perceived to be essentially uncoachable during his tenure here. You might remember this............I guess his egotistical resistant attitude should have been predicted when he grandiosely and publicly came out right at the time of his arrival here with:

We had 2 options to get rid of Brock - trade him or release him. We couldn't afford to cut him out right. No one is taking a $25M hit. FO took the trade him option. In essence it cost us a 2nd to get rid of a cancer and we got cap relief. This is why it's not a flop IMO.

Wow, I remember this now that you've brought it back to my attention. Red warning flag, in hindsight.
Brock was a little bitch with Elway last year, who had considered him a friend and went out of his way to help the player. Brock was butthurt because he was benched for a HoF QB in his last season, and then refused to take phone calls on the first day of FA when the Broncos were trying to match the Texans offer. He continued his little tantrum by refusing the HONOR of visiting the Oval Office. It's so freakin' obvious that Brock is a two-faced entitled athlete that puts on his fake BS for the public but shows his true self behind closed doors. There is a reason why no players from either team have stepped out to defend the guy as a person.
And he's a crappy QB, now one of he worst FA signings in NFL history.
Good riddance.
Losing a second is worth it, even if it does show a bigger picture incompetence of this organization's inability to evaluate the QB position.

It's painfully obvious we're waiting on Romo to be released & don't want to spend any of the available cap space in order to outbid (over pay) Denver for his services. It's an especially dangerous game we're playing if we haven't even done a physical exam on him yet. It could turn out he's not completely healed yet, or that he just decides to go to Denver & leave us at the alter. That's the only conclusion I can come to at the moment. As for the free agents, there are some quality linebackers & defensive linemen still available that could help us. I'm not saying what they're doing is the right thing, but they are obviously all on board with whatever their game plan is. I also don't expect Dallas to drag this out for too long. Romo needs some time to negotiate a new deal with which ever team he chooses to go to & I don't think Jones would disrespect Romo by dragging it out for a late round draft pick.

I respectfully disagree that we couldn't afford to cut him, the extra $6M didn't have to go on this year's cap.
Happy to be rid of him though.
I don't think it's worth it. Just bench Osweiler. Make him 3rd string.

Also, I wasn't discussing the trade in the quote you replied to. As far as I'm concerned, it's over. I was discussing a going forward scenario. I refuse to keep beating a dead horse. They dumped what looks like a cancer in the clubhouse & had to pay a steep price to get it done. Maybe, that was the only reason they did it in the first place. No matter what happens with the Romo scenario, he's only going to be a rental for a year or two. But, he allows the Texans to wait until next year's draft to go all in & draft a franchise QB.

To be fair Hopkins did say some nice things about Brock after he was sent out the door. It totally came across as a case of Hopkins saying the right things though but he did technically step out to "sorta" defend him as a player. I think he was just feeling generous knowing he didn't have to try and catch anymore passes from the guy.

I think that's a great contract for Romo in the situation he is in now. Do you think Rick can negotiate a better deal? I don't.

I think I heard someone say they can carry that money over to the next year. Of course that wouldn't be my first option. But if it's true that they can carry that cap space over then they'd still be getting something out of it....just not when most would like them to.
I think the money will be spent this season though personally.

Sitting back from afar observing, that's my impression as well.
I get being upset at being benched, but to act like a little ***** about it is weak. I completely believe the story because it lines up with my impresssions of OB and Brock.

If you remember my several posts on how Osweiler handled the press on various occasions, you would know that I had thrown many yellow/red flags all over the field on Osweiler.
Because I openly repeated that I was trying hard to be "logical" in my assessment, I don't think anybody ever outright called me a hater, but some still thought that I had a certain agenda, or was a bit too much of a negative nancy.
The thing is, at the QB position, a guy really needs to be "smart" about many different things. The general on the field needs to earn respects from his teammates, his coaches, the fans, and the media.
Along with the big bucks come a lot of responsibilities.
The QBs who understand that it's a real privilege to be starting on game days have a better chance to succeed.
Physical talents is just one part of the equation.
Nuk also said "Rick Smith is one of the best in the game"*, so I'm gonna' take his quotes with a grain of salt. He's a positive kinda' guy, and while I have no problem with it, I just don't value sunshine pumpers for their critical analysis of the human condition.

I haven't looked up his contract terms for some reason, but if those are the current terms, then you're right. Rick can't do much better than that for a Pro Bowl QB rental. Maybe, Rick is trying to be too cute about it & get Dallas to pick up most of Romo's salary. I don't know. Hopefully, it gets wrapped up one way or the other real soon.

At this point in time, Weeden is a better QB than Romo. In 2015, Weeden had the highest QB rating on the Cowboys, and he never even had Dez Bryant to throw to. And, Weeden obviously, is much more durable than Romo, whose career would be over by now had he played for the Browns. However, Romo can sell tickets and create a stir with his presence alone.

Even ignoring the money factor, Obrien doesn't seem to value Weeden much (he started Os over weeden at the end of last year), so I don't think he'll be a texan next year.

Weeden only had one bad game in 2015, and that was against the Patriots. But, like I said, Dez Bryant wasn't in the lineup for Weeden, so no one to spread the field against a great defense. Besides, did you see Tony Romo on Thanksgiving Day 2015? I believe he threw two pic sixes.
Don't get me wrong, I like Tony Romo. However, I can't see him staying healthy for more than eight games.

Now with the top OTs gone, the Texans might as well spend the cap space on him, but with an incentive laden contract based on number of game plays, especially play-offs game.
In that case, keeping Savage is fine.
And still draft at least one QB.
They will probably do right by selecting an OT in the first round though.

There's not a Texans fan in the world who's not happy Brock's gone. The only difference is that some (you for example) think that a 2nd round pick was too high a price to pay to make that happen. Others (me for example) think that $16 million in cap space (10 immediately, 6 more next season) was reasonable compensation for a 2nd round pick, and you get rid of Brock to boot. I believe league-wide statistics indicate the odds of finding a consistent starter in round two are about 50/50 (although it's somewhat dependent on the position drafted), so I'm good with using that money for finding an established NFL player and mitigating the risk of adding a bust.
I'm not as certain as some that the Texans did the deal because (and only because) Romo is expected to become available, but that's neither here nor there, as no matter what happens or doesn't happen between the Texans and Romo, we'll never definitively find out that answer. Regardless, I don't view it as $10 million for Romo - I view it as $16 Million they wouldn't have if they'd kept or cut Osweiler, and they can use it for whoever they want, whenever they want (this year, next year, whenever).
You view it your way, I view it my way, you're not gonna convince me I'm wrong, and the chances of me convincing you you're wrong are probably identical.

Not to mention removing a player that no member of the team has come out in support of, with the exception of Hopkins comments. And, I think he just said that to be politically correct. Osweiler, if left on the team, may very well have become a cancer in the clubhouse. The coach had obviously given up on him & I suspect he played him in the last games with the belief that the wild, erratic Osweiler would once again show himself on the field to make OB's case against him. Which he did.
None of this matters. They could have cut him. It wouldn't be a $25M cap hit. It would have been the same if he had played, only you get the roster spot & you keep him out of your locker room... & you'd still have your 2nd round pick.

Okay, so if we kept the pick, we'd be able to draft 1 player that may or may not be a starter. With the $10 million dollars in available cap space from trading Osweiler & the 2nd round pick next year, we can sign several free agents that can help us this year & we'll know beyond the shadow of a doubt what they bring to the table in the NFL, because they have actual NFL experience against the big boys. Draft picks are a crap shoot & even 1st & 2nd round picks bomb out from time to time. This is not saying I wouldn't rather have kept the 2nd round pick, but it apparently required us giving the pick in order to remove a cancer from the locker room & freeing up $10 million this year & another $6 million next year. One contributor for several contributor's with actual NFL experience? I'll take that any day of the week & twice on Sunday!!!
Now, I'm sure your next question is why aren't we signing free agents? For whatever reason, the front office has obviously decided that Romo is their guy & like last year when they went AGGRESSIVELY after the best available free agent QB (which is what everyone had been crying for), they are attempting to do it again. Not knowing how much money it will take to convince Romo to come here, they are holding off on any outside free agent acquisitions, imo. Obviously, Osweiler didn't work out & the front office made a mistake. But, instead of just taking their licks & shoving another year of Osweiler down the fan's throats, they made the decision to do whatever it took to FIX that mistake. While I may or may not like the player they are going after, I DO like the aggressive nature of our front office this year & last year. They're not playing around anymore. They're being AGGRESSIVE!!!
Finally, I would assume there is a time limit on how long they will wait before they go to plan "B" & move on from Romo. Right or wrong, those are my thoughts on that damn 2nd round pick. :-)
