Let's go, Les Miles! Lead us to victory. He's 63 years old. Not as bad as I had thought (closer to 70). I hope he still has the energy and passion. There's no denying he's been a heck of a coach for a long time.Les Miles nearly even money to land Houston job

Everybody is struggling to get confirmation on this story. Remember just a few days ago it was a slam-dunk that Herman was going to LSU which of course was wrong. It is not official yet, but the new UH football coach will more than likely be Lane Kiffin.

ESPN is saying that UH wants Kiffin but is trying to stack his contract with provisions that would make it hard for him to leave. That's the hold-up right now it seems.
I understand UH not wanting to get burned again but if that's the case then stay away from stepping stone candidates like Kiffin. Everyone in the world knows Kiffin would only be taking the UH job in order to parlay it into a big job like Herman just did. If UH doesn't want that then stay away.

Briles stayed for 5 years. Sumlin for 4. That's reasonable and understandable. 2 years is not sustainable long term for the program. The new coach needs to understand that and be willing to make a 4 year commitment to UH.I understand UH not wanting to get burned again but if that's the case then stay away from stepping stone candidates like Kiffin. So, I guess the alternative would be getting a small fish to go with our small status???? I can't imagine any UH AD thinking that way, or any AD for that matter.
It makes me think that the Lane Kiffin deal will be at least four years (minimum) if not more. Fertitta said, "it's not going to be an issue here anymore", and he was very adamant about it (raising his voice), and then he added, "otherwise he won't become the new head coach."Heard a clip of a Fertitta rant on the radio today... he seems pissed about coaches leaving after a year or two. Said "No More"! at UH
The alternative is to target a guy who will stick around. Young, hot shot coordinators typically don't stick around. They parlay their success into big jobs.
UH fans want a great coach who won't be looking for a promotion. You don't get to have your cake and eat it too. You either take a great coach and deal with him leaving or you don't take a great coach and try to maintain that level of success with someone else.
I wonder what the buyout is? Has anyone read anything about that?
Orlando I guess will be headed to UT now so now we need to get a DC and see if we can't keep winning.
Do you think any of the coaches will stay with MA or will he want to start from scratch? Not sure how many were left that TH didn't take. The DC will definitely be an important hire.
I have no idea but Applewhite has worked as an OC at a number of places and he's bound to have some connections so I would hope that we might be able to attract some good talent to replace what we lost. I'm sure Orlando goes and I bet he takes some guys with him. I was a bit surprised we didn't hire him for the HC spot if we were going to stay in-house. Applewhite isn't going back to UT anytime soon with that lawsuit still on the table and he'd have probably stayed with Orlando here. The other way around there's nothing to keep Orlando in Houston and I'm kind of surprised that they're talking about him staying to coach the defense in the bowl game.
I wonder if Vrabel might throw his hat into the ring to DC at the college level? He declined to go to San Francisco to be their DC but maybe he wants some experience doing it at the college level before he takes that on in the NFL? The only reason I'm mentioning it is because it would suck for the Texans to lose him as LB coach but then he's not going to do that forever probably. At some point his career path will take him to a DC job I think and if he thinks he might be ready that's a pretty easy choice to move to UH. No move for the family, no new house to buy or schools for the kids. You get to pick Romeo Crennel's brain over a beer after work when you need to. Seems like a nice fit.
On the other hand maybe Orlando would stay. With Oliver and the talent the Cougars have scooped up over the last two years he has a chance to be the coordinator of a seriously tough defense and that might lead to even better job offers/money than he's got now. Maybe even a HC gig somewhere? I'm just saying stranger things have happened.
Right now I don't have a problem with coaches using UH as a stepping stone. It means they've got to win if they're going to get that big job.I would have preferred Orlando but not surprised they went with the offensive guy. I do prefer this hire over Kiffin. I think the negotiations with Kiffin proved he was just going to use UH to catapult up like Herman did and UH doesn't want that. Good on them to realize that and kick him to the curb for someone with less name brand but who will actually stick around.
Kiffin has more flash but personally I don't think he's a good HC. Good coordinator but doesn't have the right temperament to be a HC.

Now, put the Coogs in a power 5 conference with bigger money and a much more legitimate shot at a championship, and they become a much bigger job than they are now. Maybe then you get someone to stay for a while. Of course that could then lead to your Kansas, Kentucky and Northwestern's of the world.

I remember when the Coogs joined the SWC and won the conference championship the 1st yr and then preceded to be a top 10-20 team for many yrs. That and the fact that UH is a relatively low budget school compared to the Oklahoma/UT's of the world are what's keeping UH out of the power 5 conference school's. God blees Bill Yoeman/Guy V.
University of Tex/Okla keeping Houston out of BIG12, because Houston area is rich in recruits. I think Houston is an ideal candidate to join the ACC.
