Week 2...The Test...Kansas City Chiefs!!!

JamTex

Hall Of Fame Texans Fan!
On Sunday, September 18th at noon, The Texans will host the Chiefs at NRG Stadium.
The game will be aired locally on CBS 11.
At this point the Chiefs offense ranks 3rd and the Texans rank 10th. The Chiefs defense ranks 16th and the Texans ranks 2nd.
So what we basically have is the 3rd ranked offense of the Chiefs against the 2nd ranked defense of the Texans. The 10th ranked offense of the Texans against the 16th ranked defense of the Chiefs.
To me, based on the stats alone, the Texans have the edge.
Now the Chiefs have some really good players.
Offense:
Alex Smith is a more then a capable quarterback
Jeremy Maclin is a great wide reciever
Jamall Charles is a devastating running back
Travis Kelce....The only better tight end in the league is the Gronk.
This offense is a big problem as we all know to well.
Defense:
We all know Tamba Hali, Derrick Johnson and Justin Houston too well.
One thing, they will be without Justin Houston.
This is going to be a really tough game.
Here at home, with O'brien, Godsey and Osweiller making offensive corrections to clean up the game, I feel allot more confident about this game then I did either of the games last year.
I think JJ and the defense will be out for revenge. They may say it's just another game, but we all know how the Chiefs plunged a very long dagger in the heart of the Texans, not once, but twice last year. Especially that playoff demolishing of our Texans.
This stuff is not forgotten or forgiven.
The Texans will battle in this one and come out with a very tough win.
And this is a tough call because the Chiefs could win this one.
This will show us fans the real intestinal fortitude of our Texans team win or lose.
How hard do they fight?
How much pride do they show?
Not a very high scoring one in this game and a very close battle.
Texans 21
Chiefs 20

Chiefs had all the game they wanted from San Diego winning in over time. This could be a very interesting game. Our oline did pretty well today but I am sure many here will disagree.

The 2 sacks against brock were tough, but for the most part, Brock had time to plant, make decisions and throw.

I think most of the mistakes can be corrected. The first snap penalty against Newton irritated me but I guess I should give him a pass. I did not take time to review penalties against Houston but did not to be stupid, ridiculous ones so...that is a positive.

somebody needs to finally cover Kelce damz it!!
I agree. We should see allot of Peters in this game. His a fantastic cover line backer and since Cush will be out for a while, we'll need him. He needs to be all over Kelce all game with Hal covering him over the top.

Is one game a statistically significant sample size?

Not really, but watching each of their first games also gives us an idea of how they play and how things will go.
The Chiefs had to come back from a big deficit to win and they barely pulled it off.
If the Chiefs get behind against the Texans, They won't be able to make that kind of come back based on how well the Texans defense did in the second half of the Chicago game.
And, if the Texans get behind, This offense may be able to make a come back.
The Chargers had no defense. Neither do the Chiefs without Justin Houston.
It kinda fares well for the Texans.
I don't think it's going to be a run away, but I do think the Texans can win this one after watching the Chiefs and Chargers. And the Texans and Bears.

If the Texans were on the road, I don't think we could see a win, but here at home, the crowd gets involved in a big way and helps invigorate this team. Here the Texans win by a very narrow margin.

You say the Chiefs have no defense without Houston, but you project the Texans only score 13 points?
24-17 Texans

Dude. Even without Justin Houston, they have a defense. I don't think it's as good as ours, but it's no slouch.
I don't think either team will take off offensively. It's going to be a defensive war with the team holding the ball last winning it.
That's why I think it could go either way, but being a home town game and being a homey myself, I have to give our Texans the 3 points.
I'll stand by the my prediction.

Check what I bolded in your quote on my previous post. You said it, not me lol

We need to jump on them quick with seven points not three. I want to score then stop them and score another TD before they get settled. A KO return by Ervin for TD then we get ball back and long drive for another TD would be a good first quarter.

Bears DL had virtually no pass rush but did play the run much better. Also OB and Godsey were helping protect Osweiler with quick short one look pass plays. I'd bet that JJ is happy he only has to face Kyle Long once this year. Outside of Long the Bears OL was a bit green.

Well, the Bears didn't have anyone that could make our roster so might as well throw out those stats...

Based on Bears injury report posted by CnD I am surprised this wasn't more of a runaway. http://www.texanstalk.com/posts/2631430/

They will score 24-27 points like they did today or against us last season twice. Can we score 30 points on them is the question!

Which KC team will show up; the one that was down 21-3 at the half or the one that scored 24 pts in the 2nd half to tie the game and send it to O/T?

And BTW, do "game managers" engineer 24-pt (30 if you count O/T) comebacks?

Regardless we know they won't give up and can make effective adjustments at halftime.

None of your conclusions make sense. Everything in your analysis breaks the Texans way. This kind of thinking leads, imo, to very unrealistic expectations.

& they can score quick. We postulate that our "new" offense gives us the same ability, but we haven't seen it yet.

This will be a tough low-scoring game. I think Alex Smith is under rated. No Justin Houston that's a plus, but everybody else is still there.

Texans win 3-2.

Hopefully not the one that kicked our ass in the playoffs and regular season last year.

The Chiefs are going to be tough. They climbed out of a hole against San Diego and that's going to give their confidence a big boost. Once you've come back like that you know you can do it and so if they start slow again and we get up early we need to keep the pedal down and maintain the intensity.

I shouldn't say they have no defense, just that they are not the same without Justin Houston. They're still tough though.

This game could well be two teams that start slow and end well. Could be a great game for objective fans, and a pepto-bismol game for fans of the teams.

I just hope that this game doesn't end up like last year's games.
Alex is a good quarterback and he has some dangerous weapons.
On the other hand, Osweiller looks to be a pretty good quarterback himself and he has some dangerous weapons as well.
Both teams made half time adjustments and came out of the locker room to shut the other team down and win.
This is going to be a good game.

I had this one marked as a loss. If we hit the big plays we just missed and not turn it over, aka, HoyerUgo, we can play with them. I always fear an offense that has a really good tight end, check, mobile QB, check, and a RB that is also good out of the backfield, check. Those guys seem to beat our pressure we bring to the more pocket oriented teams

This game is my reality check.

Either Bill O'Brien is doing good things changing the culture in Houston and all that, or it's just lip service.

We lose this game, three losses in a very short time frame to a tier 2 team, then this is the same Texans team that will let you down against "the good" teams.

If there's a measure of payback... then I think we've got a mentally tough team that can go deep in the play offs.

This I agree with completely. If the Texans don't have their backs up looking to extract some payback right now then they still haven't finished installing the teams "spine" and we're not better off than we were before. I expect them to go out and beat the Chiefs. If they are who we all want them to be they will do it.

Very well said.
This will be a gauge as to how good the Texans really are.

Good day folks. First post. Chiefs D is not that great this year. Gaines is not a great CB like Sean Smith. Dee Ford is a disaster at lb. Control Smith and make him pocket passer.

I here you. But this is a mental thing with this club. Like 0-13 playing in Indy. We're 0-3 vs KC in our last three meetings & the last one kinda hurt.

I always hate facing Andy Reid with the types of defenses we've had under Phillips and Crenel. They have that short passing game that nullifies our pass rush, takes advantage of us gambling for turnovers, and our safeties aren't good at covering up mistakes. It's a bad matchup.

they have had are number lately its going to be a tough game IMO I don't think it will be like the PLayoff game cus we don't have Hoyer ..sooo I think it wil be a closer game

Welcome aboard. Excuse us if we don't take your assessment to heart. Losing to your team, badly, twice in a row makes us wonder if Andy Reid just has O'Brien's number or what.
And then there's the little matter of the Chiefs' defense pretty much putting Phillip Rivers and the Chargers offense on lockdown in the second half to pull off the biggest comeback of the week (per ESPN).
As other folks have said, I see this as a yardstick game for us. Is our young team ready to take the next step into annual playoff contention?

Hopefully not the one that kicked our ass in the playoffs and regular season last year.

They were lucky that they had Hoyer as an opponent for a game and a half last year.

I expect to see a battle next Sunday. But, I have no doubt that the nasty taste of that 30-0 playoff beatdown is still in their collective mouths and I fully believe the Texans will be ready to avenge it.

I would be happy if we could just compete with them. Show some improvement over last years games.

This. Yardstick game. Someone basically called it a referendum game on OB's ability/desire to win. Really hard to go to that level one regular season game with half of this offense not being on the team last year. Yardstick is much more realistic.

Offensively, the Chiefs match up with what our weaknesses on defense are very well, this was apparent last season and something we still have suspicions this season. Hopefully this season will be different

A QB who is mobile enough to make things difficult for the pass rush, and can also gets yards on the ground.
A QB that willingly takes what the defense gives him, and our defense does give alot of cushion on a regular basis
A fast WR who can take a short reception a very long way
A TE who in the top tier of his position in regards to receiving ability.
Speedy running back, who is very good at catching passes and running after the catch.

They also have a good Head Coach and don't quit on games. On paper, based on matchups, this is one of our hardest games this season.

I live in Missouri but not a Chief fan. I get do much grief for it.

The way I see it, the game in the playoffs was played much closer than it looked. Despite the KO TD to start the game and Hoyer completely S#!tting the bed, it was a 13 -0 game deep into the 3rd quarter, the D played well despite let Kelce loose until JJ went out. They forced TO's and played well enough to win, if they play like that Sunday we will be in a good position. Problem is that Watt is not himself, but on the bright side having Clowney backs helps that some. What's going against them is Justin Houston is out, he absolutely killed us both games last year, and Sean Smith is gone, so they have some inexperience in the secondary. Been reading their boards and they seem to think the D has not looked good so far through the pre season and game 1, especially the Run D, they gave up 150+ yesterday. If the D can play like the did in the first half in the playoffs and the second half yesterday, we should be fine on that side of the ball. The O just needs to establish a running game and stick to the ball control short game passing with shots over the top for big plays. If Fuller can be loose like he was yesterday, and we get some decent pass pro, there should be some big plays for him. This was a very good team last year, they made a great comeback yesterday so this will really tell us where the Texans are. If they can win, it sets up nicely for the first qtr of the season to go 3-1, a lot riding on this we can't just dominate the division, have to get some wins on quality opponents outside of the Colts.

KC won't be the dog Chicago was. They have two things not all teams have, things devastating to a defense: a quarterback who can run and a great tight end. They also have a better head coach than we do. There might not be much fun in the stands.

I wouldn't presume Reid is better than O'Brien. Jury is out on that one.

Smith's legs are a threat, we'll have to beat him down to discourage him getting frisky.

As for Kelce, hope we have a better plan than last year.

KC also has Derrick Johnson. Saying that name still angers me more than you could imagine because he should be in his 11th season as a Texan. He's more than done his part against us each time we play.
