The New New JaDeveon Clowney Thread

Oh no...a pro athlete with disposable income out gambling. /sarcasm
He wasn't playing. Didn't travel with the team. Who gives a **** what he's doing on his off time?
No story to me.

Was Jadeveon Clowney At A Louisiana Casino Last Night While The Texans Were In San Francisco?

There's nothing wrong with living and enjoying life. Lol

Clowney already out? No one saw that coming. :gun:

I will be a visionary here

Clowney plays between 6 and 11 games this season suffering from a variety of injuries with an illness thrown in and finishes the year with 4-8 sacks. Our defense is ranked between 5th and 10th at end of year.

Texans do not pick up Clowney's 5th year option

Next preseason Clowney again misses the majority of practices and preseason games with soreness.

Next season Clowney miraculously stays healthy and plays all 16 games and has 14-18 sacks, however Watts production goes down and our defense ranks between 12th and 20th.

Fans are divided rather to offer Clowney the 6yr/$120m contract he has earned with his one good year or let him walk.

Anyone give me 1000/1 odds of all of this happening?

Let me introduce you to a bookie friend of mine who will gladly offer you a deal that at least at first may seem too good to be true. :

1st post and the gauntlet is thrown.
I'd bet more than I have that Clowney has more than 4 sacks. 8 would be an even bet in Vegas.. probably.

Hard to get sacks when you dont play. Hell seems like its hard to get sacks when he does play. Sets a mean edge though. Sigh.

Jopru > Jobu. Someone burn a Carr jersey or put a Travis Johnson headshot through a shredder, Wolf is conjuring up some demons.

Jobu needs a refill. HEH

As an aside.. I still have faith we didn't waste a 1st round pick with Clowney.... YET. You know, because we never do that.

Sarcasm aside and Watt aside.. our 1st round picks have got to be the worse statistically comparatively.

Last 10 years Smith has done very well in the first round, particularily compared to the Colts. Colts lucked out with Luck and Smith really had no choice with Clowney. Jadeveon was declared by all the "experts" to be the best player in a generation. If Smith takes Mack and passes on Clowney and Clowney ended up the stud and Mack the dud the narrative would be much different right now, as it is now Clowney was just "unlucky". Plus Clowney was from daddy McNair's alma mater.

Mack built his reputation on a three-game stretch last season where he got 9 sacks. He has 10 sacks in the other 29 games of his career. He is pre-2015 Whitney Mercilus. Shows up big in one game, disappears for three or four.

Not saying that Clowney has been better/produced more than Mack, but let's remember how much this message board b!tched about Mercilus his first three seasons. He hasn't consistently played up to his #5 pick either.

Mack played his first season as a 4-3 LB (not an edge rusher if you don't know the difference). That is why he did not get many sacks his first season. As far as dissecting stats, every players stats can be dissected to prove how they are meaningless. Everything is randomized, 9 coming in three games does not discredit his stats. He was an All-Pro at TWO positions (4-3 DE and 4-3 LB) in his second season - FIRST time in history. Mack is one of the top 10 defensive players in the league, there is no comparison between Clowney or Mercilus and Mack. Mercilus has been a steady productive player for the Texans but definitely not elite. I will agree all the hate for Mercilus was undeserved, his first three seasons he was asked to do a lot of things other than just rush the QB.

Mack has exceeded his #5 pick expectations.

Yeah.. not as bad as I thought. Thanks for the rehash.
The rest of the rounds are suspect though. HEH

Here's a question: Does anyone know what deal was offered for Clowney or what we were asking?
I recall it being said we wanted a ton and while I still have faith he'll show his potential.. maybe we should've taken whatever was on the table.

I believe what McNair/Texans wanted was the standard equivalent of 3 first rd draft picks.

I am skeptical we received any offers. I was pretty upset at the way McNair handled that situation; he talked way to much during the process. Following the draft the Falcons said they considered moving up if the price was right, but they would have moved up for Robinson, not Clowney. IMO, most teams wanted nothing to do with the 1st pick. If the Texans would not have picked Clowney, I believe we would have seen a big fall. It is just really hard to be the 1st team to pass on the guy the whole media is infatuated with, especially when the owner wants that guy. I was not on these boards in 2014 but on HT at least 75% of fans wanted Clowney. It takes a team like the Patriots, Steelers and Packers who have a mandate with fans to pick whoever they want, but they never pick 1st.

....B Werner was such a bust pick he looks like he could be a blue chipper but never did much

BTW we will prob ride or die with Clown and use that 5th year option ... and we will prob die LOL

After returning to practice following a sore knee that forced him to miss a week of practice, and sit out the Texans' first preseason game against the last Sunday, McClain fired off the following tweet:

Clowney refused to do interview as he was walking off the field. Maybe he would have gotten injured talking to us.

— John McClain (@McClain_on_NFL)
His tweet has been met with plenty of . Many people have criticized McClain for being hurt because Clowney denied him an interview opportunity while some have praised him for his "burn." Meanwhile, two members of the Texans— and Cecil Shorts III—have responded to the writer's poor "joke." Texans wide receiver Jaelen Strong also showed his support by Nuk's message.

Cmon John, your better than that. Not called for.

— Deandre Hopkins (@Nukdabomb)
You have a job to do I respect that. But to throw low blows or downgrade a player is uncalled for. Period. Grow up.

— Cecil Shorts III (@CecilShortsIII)
McClain has yet to respond, but that apology should be released any minute now.

I don't really care that much one way or the other but I'd still call this an unforced error by McClain because he's the one whos job in no small part depends on access to the players on the team.

Big disagreement over your premise that he would have earned 20 m per year. He would be 24 YOA with a very good season so if reasonably healthy which I doubt, I could see "some type" of contract with incentives. However more then likely, he would be allowed to pursue his career elsewhere. Do not forget that his current deal of $22.3 million is 100% guaranteed and it appears team decided to squeeze every dollar out of him rather than cut him and eat the dead money. That will not be the case off season of 2017. Also with two more seasons behind him, it will be much clearer how he is deteriorating. If CnnnD is correct and he usually is, I think Texans thank him for 2017 stats and wish him well.

2018 : Clowney gone, Cushing gone $8.5 m savings, Johnathan Joseph gone (plays out contract), D. Brown gone (plays out contract), Newton gone $4 m savings...50% chance Watt may also be gone after 2017 (let the shrieking begin.)

I am most interested in how Smith and O'Brien prepare to replace these guys. Bringing in young low cost players such as John Simon, Tony Washington, Max Bullough, Covington, Drummond on defense looks shrewd now.

Offense needs to have better luck although this last draft/free agency could make up for that.

I made a flippant comment not long ago to Texian, that I could see us drafting two OTs and two DTs in 2017. If this roster develops like it could, that statement just might turn out to be on the nose.

I am interested in our last two picks in third round; for a while we talked about trading the pick to get better use but Strong in 2015 and Brax Miller 2016 looking good so far. Jury still out on 2014 TE Fiedorowicz but we know trade up for Irish Chocolate (Nix) :cheese:

I also hope we don't offer Clowney a large second contract off of potentially one year. I was just in jest forecasting that Clowney will continue being the Clowney he has been since he secured being the #1 draft pick his Sophomore season by limitations from a variety of injuries and illnesses this season and throughout next preseason. I expect when he has to ball out for his second contract during the 2017 season he will, and somebody will mistakenly pay him for it and end up with the Clowney we have seen in Houston.

Watt's cap hit is only 15m for 2018 and 2019 and 15.5m for 2020. By that time those values will be grossly underpaid even for a 3-4 DE of Fletcher Cox stature, averaging 60 tackles, 6 sacks, 1 PDs, 10 TFLs. Do you think there is a 50% chance Watt will come down to averaging less than that kind of production?

I agree we need to focus on the trenches in the 2017 draft.

I am concerned Watt will just not physically be able to go. I could McNair naming him some sort of ambassador for Texans..

PDS Retweeted Be not afraid

They OLBs are interchangeable. Clowney is not a base 3-4 end but he does have his hand in the ground in 4 man fronts

PDS added,

Be not afraid @SolomonKane13
@PatDStat so why do Texans have Mercilus &Clowney play the same position? Why isn't Clowneys hand on the ground filling Crick's DE position?

Clowney playing with his hand in the ground will significantly increase the stress and thus wear on his microfracture knee, especially when playing on his usual right side.

Tune in next week to see who will be TT's next target of ire.
My money's on Ervin (sucky return job) and the patchwork O-line

Clowney looks solid when (when!) He's on the field. I saw enough highlights of ervin to give him a lot more time.
